I've got win xp, recently it is running very slowly especially when I try to get on the internet. I am attaching hicjackthis log, are there any obvious problems, I have a hunch that there are some programs which I don't use which slow down the system. Any suggestions? I've been trying with little success to get my mum's computer to run smoother. She has a Compaq Presrio 2100 running Windows XP-Home with Service Pack 2. Celeron 2.40 GHz - 448 MB RAM 37.2 Gig (using 11.9 - remaining 25.3) She is running Norton (argh) and I have put this machine through several scans for malware, adware and viruses and have found absolutely nothing. I have defragged, Dr. Watsoned, ran the Windows Error Checking Tool, and inflicted several other Windows tools on this poor machine, but I am unable to get the dang thing to speed up at start-up and shut-down. For two weeks I have had a constant problem with freezing and disconnects on various sites, including updates for Norton and AdAware, so I don't know if it is browser related or not. Every few minutes data in and out stop completely for about 30 seconds, then resume normally until the next freeze. The disconnects may happen every few minutes, then may not happen for several days. This is a 38kbs dial-up, with no prior major problems. My ISP is baffled, Norton has NEVER found anything, AdAware finds only the normal browser cookies, Spybot never finds ANYTHING if I run AdAware first, the free version of Registry Mechanic didn't help, CWShredder found nothing. This happens even with no other programs running. This was not a gradual thing--if was fine one day, problem the next day. I tried un and reinstalling the modem driver and got a "not configured properly" message no matter how I tried it, so had to use system restore to get it back. Occasionally IE opens with the plain screen with "browser cannot find style and presentation information", then the next time it is normal. Lately my PC freezes up for virtually no reason. The computer is older but runs just fine besides the freezing up. Not sure if its just time to get a new computer or if its just a glitch. I've attached a hijackthis log, hopefully if there is a glitch we can find it. Lately my computer has been extremely slow, not just internet slow but onboard slow. For example, if I click on an application from the desktop it will sit there for 10-20 seconds before anything happens. Occasionally I'll click multiple times on something and nothing will happen then 30 seconds later it will open multiple instances of things. This delay has been happening with just about anything I click on, acting like the computer's busy doing something else when nothing else should be going on. I've looked in the task manager and the applications column will be blank

I'm running XP. I did an Ad-Aware scan and removed some tracking cookies. It also stated that I had 29 running processes. How do I find what is running to help speed up my PC, and also; which are essential? I have dial-up AOL. It's running like a horse-drawn computer. How can I get it up to at least steam-powered.

We run Comcast high speed, two computers running though a router setup. My son "opened a port" to speed up his game play. My computer now crawls. Pages take too long to load, and I now sometimes get the server error message here, server not responding. Any idea what I can do. My son seems baffled, but I know he doesn't want to sacrifice his warp speed game play.

Someone told me that my computer is running slow because I have too many programs running in the background. Could this be true and if so, how do I delete the unnecessary programs and more to the point, how do I recognize which programs are necessary and which are not?

computer (WinXP SP2 - 1GB RAM) just started in the last day or two to load really slow -- it takes a good half hour or more to get to the point where you can click on an icon and it takes a few minutes to open. Don't even ask about the internet. it did not download anything in the last few days and has no idea why this is happening.

My problems are a very long boot up (go away and make a coffee length) and also slow running, especially in opening progs for the first time ie, very slow to open Word initially, then much faster opening subsequent Word files. Even so, the laptop has slowed considerably and is often hesitant.

Why is it taking my computer 3 minutes to boot to the desktop? As you can see from my signature below, I don't have exactly a slow poke machine. All drives are defragged weekly, the BIOS is set to boot off of the hard disk, and I only have the one OS installed. This thing use to boot to the desktop in 20 seconds.

And yes, I've seen the link with all the progs to clean up your machine- great idea to put them in one place. Ran all of them, still no dice. Here's the problem. Everything is running slow- games, IE, etc.- and when I check task manager I range from 10% to 20+% CPU usage (not sure if that's normal or not) when nothing but the essentials are running. update: i've defraged all drives, cut my memory back to 512MB (out of 1.5GB) and killed all unnecessary background/startup progs. What other info do you guys need? You've helped me a few times before, and it's usually something bone-headed I've done, but I'm also bull-headed and that's the only way I seem to learn yes you may have seen this post before, but it's 7 or 8 pages back now. and since there's no search option here, stuff tends to get left behind.
