View 2 RepliesBefore any of this happened, I installed Norton Ghost, and switched my DVD drive with a CD burner. I had to restart the computer for some reason, when I logged into XP, all the desktop icons showed and everything, then the computer just froze So i pressed the "reset" switch on my computer. Then my computer started to run the "Chkdsk" on my hard drive. It found alot of errors and dealt with them successfully. Now every time I restart, my computer hangs at the following file (the splash screen doesn't even show!)C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32DriversPCI.sys
View 10 Replies View RelatedJust reformated my computer, installed all critical windows updates, scanned for virus'/spyware, and updated all hardware drivers. When i try to set jpegs as wallpapers it takes an eternity to load them and causes the display properties window to hang, but bmp's load up instantly.. Jpegs work and load perfectly fine in other programs such as paint, photoshop though.All of this is after i have just reformated for like the 3rd time in 2 days to see if it was a installation problem, but i guess not. It would seem its a hardware issue but i can play games like oblivion at normal fps, aswell as other games.
View 7 Replies View RelatedSome programs (currently hl.exe is doing it :/) are just not closing right. I end them with task manager and they dissappear from everywhere but Task manager, where they stay no matter how many times i click end process. I tried through command prompt, it said it terminated the process, but it just stays in the task manager process list. I also tried through EndItAll, which told me it didn't have permission to kill the program.

Nothing seems to be working, I have tried several bootable cds with registry editors in then and again none of them picked up my harddrive. View 2 Replies View Relatedwhen closing my computer down it hangs on saving your settings. You can hear the 'tower' closing down, but the screen doesn't disappear and the pc won't close down. I have to do it at the tower. I have run spywareblaster, avgspyware, avgantivirus, housecall x2 and spybot. Nothing shows up except the odd tracking cookie, which I delete, but the problem still continues. Would I have a virus or anything else that these can't find. Is there anything else I can try.

View 14 Replies View RelatedThe offending program AcroRd32.exe (acrobat reader) hangs the logoff process if the user has a pdf open inside a webpage.Previously, I used a logoff script to "kill.exe" the AcroRd32.exe which would then allow the machine to finish the logoff process. In the recent past, a patch (not sure which one).. has changed the logoff process to start after all the users applications have closed.I was investigating using the "Auto Endtask" registry options to killthe application, but this does not seem to function.

Just recently when closing down a dialogue box appears with the text: "End Program - sprtmcd.exe" This goes through a little process then I select the "End Now" option and the computer closes down. This has to be done every time now. Everything else seems to be functioning normally as far as I can tell.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy father gets all the weirdest and most interesting problems with his computer... and then, of course, he turns to me for help, and usually it's something I've never heard of before, and probably caused by some random software gizmo he downloaded, that I just tell him to format and reinstall.
This time, though, it's on a fairly fresh (about a month and a half old) reinstall, and he says he hasn't installed any new software lately. So I thought I'd ask for a bit of help before telling him to reformat.
when he closes a program, about half the time it hangs for 10-30 seconds before closing. The program window disappears, but is still in the taskbar, and nothing at all can be done (no buttons will click, no programs will open, no keys will press) until it disappears. Afterward, if, for instance, you've clicked every icon on the desktop in frustration, most of what you tried to do during this brief hang will all happen at once. The Task Manager's performance tab doesn't show any unusual activity during the hang. And even the Task Manager will cause this hang when closed.
In windows 98se I could close running programs before installing a new program, by hitting ctrl/alt/del, then closing those running one at a time. How do I do this now that I am running win XP pro? I'm kind of afraid to shut down anything before installing a new program.

View 13 Replies View RelatedEvery so often, an error message pops up saying "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." All my folders open then freeze and i have to close through the windows task manager.This happens almost immediately when i access my harddrive F from a shortcut on the desktop. It doesn't happen as fast when accessing other folders on the desktop or folders through shortcuts on the desktop, but within time errors all the same. I've also noticed a program opens in the windows task manager whenever this happens.The program is drwtsn32.exe.

View 11 Replies View RelatedLately I'm getting the "I.E. has encountered a problem and needs to close" message so of course I lose what I had open and have to start over. It's not doing it constantly or consistant on the same websites but it is at least a few to several times a day now. It seems to do it most often when leaving a site and trying to go back to whatever preceeded it especially if I click the back button more than once(unnecessary habit I know).
Here is the info shown for the problem:
APPname:iexplorer.exe Appver 6.0.2900.2180 Modname ntdll.dll
Modver:5.1.2600.2180 offset:0003426d
The offset # is the only one that is different each time it comes up.
* I've ran the Norton system scan a few times( just their regular version, not their registry cleaner)
* ran CW Schredder
* ran Ad Aware
* Keep Spyware Blaster up to date
* and tried CCcleaner
None of which made any difference.
I am having an issue with opening my documents from the desktop. I receive this message when I attempt to open my documents: "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and need to close. We are sorry for this inconvenience." I have run scandisk upon powering up the computer and that will fix the problem for a while, but eventually I will get the same message. Any thoughts?
View 5 Replies View Relatedjust installed a new hard drive in my computer and now, every time I open any window at all, if I click "X" to close it out, an internet explorer page opens up that is blank. When I close that, I get a Windows Explorer error message that says "Windows Explorer needs to close". I'm thinking maybe there is a problem in the registry but don't know exactly how to go about fixing it.

Connection between camera and computer via Firewire IEEE 1394 Device in the mode where computer (via Kodak Camera Manager software) controls Camera and uploads the images.
Crash has 2 "flavors" but all of them happen when camera shutter release shoots many shots without waiting of the previous shot to be uploaded to computer. 1st crash - is total system reboot. 2nd crash - only Kodak Camera Manager crashes and then when restarted the program, it still does not work until I reboot the system. In short: when many shots/images accumulate forcing overflow over the IEEE 1394 Device, either Camera Manager crashes or system reboots
I have noticed that sometimes when I look at the task manager that there are programs there that I have terminated. For the most part they are not using CPU time, but are still on the list. The exception is iexplore.exe which is using 50% of CPU time (dual core machine) and causing the system to become unresponsive. I have tried using the right click, terminate process on these entries and nothing happens. They still remain in the list.
I have tried to restart computer and it will not restart. It goes through some motions of attempting to end unresponsive programs, but then nothing happens. The only way out is to hold down the power button until the computer shuts off which is supposed to be a bad way to turn it off.
After I am on the computer for a few hours usually, my computer flickers with different task. computer closes all programs, then opens up Start Menu, then opens up like 2 or 3 programs, then closes, it does all this within like 5 secs, i mean it does it very fast...it keeps on opening and closing different programs simultaneously. Then only way i can stop the programs from opening and closing and my computer from flickering is to press CTRL+ATL+DEL.
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy computer started acting like it was possessed! The numlock and scroll lock keys beep and light up on and off continuosly; if I try to open any Windows programs, ALL of the Windows programs start to pop open all over the desktop; it won't even dial the internet connection, so I can't get online. It won't go on standby by itself, and if I choose standby on the shutdown menu, it goes into standby for about 5 minutes and then goes back to the desktop, even after I've logged off!
I am able to open any games or programs that aren't Microsoft without other programs popping open, but the numlock and scroll lock keys still flash and beep all the time.
I have Earthlink ISP and use their anti-virus, pop-up blocker, spyblocker, spam filter, and firewall, along with Ad-aware and Xoftspy. No viruses or spyware are found when I run them.
