i tried playing a region 1 dvd on my laptop last week, the region setting on my laptop was changed to region 1 however the laptop went into 'busy' mode on me and the dvd did not play. after this my laptop was running slow. now it takes my laptop precisely 10 minutes to fully load, when it has loaded i can use the net or ms word without any problems and they work fine. however if i was to watch a video on Internet, even though the video has loaded, it plays kinda slow.
I used to be able to turn on my Windows XP SP2 machine and be on the desktop without having to be there to pick a login name. I installed a new printer on this machine and now it stops and waits for me to pick a login name. It was also going to the login screen whenever the screensaver was accessed. I was able to remove that feature by right-clicking on the desktop > properties > screensaver and unchecking "on resume, display Welcome screen".I remember when this happened on my old Win 98 computer I went into the control panel > network and changed the setting from "Client for Microsoft Networks" to "Windows Logon". Is there a way to do this in Windows XP SP2?

I'm sick to death of this pc's lack of functionality so I want to upgrade it. I want to (if possible): Add more RAM Add a second HDD (120-160GB) Install XP Home Is there any way, short of opening the case, I can check what needs to be checked eg. if there's a free memory slot, what kind of memory to use, what kind of HDD will work etc. Also, where is the best place to buy? Do I want to pick up an OEM or upgrade XP? Are the components region specific?
UPON SETUP OF WINDOWS XP HOME THERE IS NO COUNTRY OR REGION INFORMATION IN THE DROP DOWN WINDOW IN THE PHONE AND MODEM SETUP.ALL I GET WHEN WINDOW POPS DOWN IS A BLANK WINDOW.
whenever I try to play music it doesnt play, it says low on memory, whenever I open any Microsoft Word program it gives me some error about a license, and whever I try to copy and paste anything, it doesnt let me. I have a few partitions on my hard drive and whenever I copy one file or a folder or anything, I cannot paste it anywhere. If I open Control Panel, the screen doesnt appear as usual, all the icons are on two columns on the lft side with a scroll bar next to them. If I try to open Add/Remove programs, it comes up all garbled. I was going to just reformat the whole computer but it will not boot from the cd rom drive now. And whenever the computer is booted in W2K and I try to browse the CD in My Computer, it just says "Please insert disk in drive...." Also, whenevr I restart, it sits on my desktop for about 5 minutes before it finally brings up the icons and everything. It has never done any of this, it just started this morning.
I changed from a dial-up connection to cable (Road Runner). Since then, my search engines have changed (when I search from the IE address bar, it uses MSN search now), and many pages that load, although faster, have the message "error on page" at the bottom. Outlook Express became my default email with the Road Runner email address, but most of the time it does not respond. Also, several games are slow to respond or do not respond at all (specifically CSI games and Hunting Unlimited). I run adaware and spybot at least once a week if not more, and defrag regularly. Are there extra precautions I should take with a cable connection?
I have a couple thousand midi files broken into smaller folders. I click one to play with Media Player or there was a link that said PLAY ALL. That doesn't appear anymore and I have to keep selecting tunes each time one ends. I looked in the window drop downs but can't find how to bring back PLAY ALL.
I am trying various screencapture programs, but when I try to select an area of the screen to capture, all I get is a black 'box' of the are where I snap'd -
I just finished a complete reinstall of Windows XP. Before the re-installation, I partitioned the hard drive. I want the basic Windows XP system files and drivers on my "C" drive and then I want to accumulate data files (word processing, spreadsheets, photos, music files, etc.) on the new partition which in this case has been labeled the "G" drive. The difficulty I am having is getting getting the "Documents and Settings" to move over to the "G" drive. So that when I want to load photographs from my camera to the computer it goes for C:Documents and SettingsMy NameMy DocumentsMy Pictures. Instead I would like it to go to G:Documents and SettingsMy NameMy DocumentsMy Pictures. Using Windows Explorer I changed the file name of "My Documents" to 'Windows XP old path My Documents" and then I was going to set up a new path to the "G" drive through Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Managment>Disk Management.
However I noticed that when I clicked on Start in the bottom left hand corner and it puts up that little window that "My Documents" which was listed now had the new title 'Windows XP old path My Documents' which I believe means I haven't gotten to the proper place to change the main configuration for Documents and Settings. Long way of saying how do I change the basic configuration for where Document and Settings are stored to a new location.
i have a problem with windows media player, whenever i try to play a video, it says play at the bottom left hand side of the screen but nothing plays, audio, or video, what do i do?
What info do I need on the server side to allow access to the client computer. I know in xp (the server) in this case, you can allow users access by adding them and giving them access. Just wondering what kind of info I add on the server side for the client to have access.. Do i put in the client computer name, workgroup or Ip address? Internal IP address or external? I'm basically trying to setup a connection to allow me to use remote desktop from work to access my home PC. Home PC is using xp pro and work PC is using Win98. I've already setup the VPN connection at work (win98), just need more info on setting up the Host PC. Like what exact info I need from the client PC, to add this info to allow access to my Host..
The first thing you need to do is download Ad-Aware SE Personal from HERE. Once you have downloaded and installed it you must update it and customize the scanning properties so that it scans more thorough.Once it’s installed click on the icon on your desktop and open it to the main screen. You will need to be online to update it, so if you are using a 56K connection you must first connect to your ISP. Now click were it says Check for updates now”, this will connect you to Lavasofts servers and update your definitions. This is the same as updating your antivirus definitions. Now that everything is up to date you need to customize your scanning properties to get the best protection. Now that you are at the main screen click the “Scan now” button, this will take you to a screen that says “Select a scan mode:”, select "Customize" and check "Scan within archives" then "Proceed". Then select "Select" and check all of your drives, "Scan volume for ADS" should be checked now. Now just select "Next".Ad-aware should now be scanning ALL of your drives for any know spyware/malware in its database. Once it has finished scanning it will give you list of everything that it found, REMOVE ALL THAT IT FINDS. Place your cursor on the list of items it finds and right click with your mouse and choose “select all” then click “remove selected items”. This will remove all spyware/malware from your pc. If Ad-aware prompts you to scan on your next reboot you should do so, this may happen because some spyware/malware is in use during the scan and could not be removed properly, Ad-aware will then schedule a boot time scan and remove these items on your next reboot.

When I put a DVD in it will not play. No problem playing CD's. When I right click and try to open. Says please insert disk in drive when there is a DVD in drive. Have already tried system restore. I also rebooted my computer. Still not working. P.S. I just recently ran an update for a software program. Could that have anything to do with this problem?
I want to set up another email account for my mother in law on my wife's computer. I have 8 addresses so that is not an issue. I am just wondering if I should set up an additional profile on her Windows XP Home computer or if there is someway to use the same outlook express? I want it to be a clean and easy as possible.

When trying to look at my file in MS explorer, I get the message: Your current security settings prohibits running ActiveX controls on this page. As a result, the page may not display correctly. No folder or subfolders are shown.Other strange problems started to happen: 1- Clicking on Task manager brings up the pop up and immediately disappears 2- Can not bring up the Control panel in the normal window. Clicking on any Icon (like add/remove..) that is shown, does nothing! 3- Some system tools (defrag,) do not work at all. No pop up window comes up.
I installed a new software, Volkswagen ETKA 7 from Germany. After installing, it appears as if it took away my administrators privileges. I cannot right click, all of my autocomplete fileds are gone including passwords, IE7 will not let me change any setting, lost my favorites, lost my icons for OE and many others. This is just the tip of the iceberg. I am still logged in as system administartor, but I do not have all of the priveleges I should. I just noticed the Content Advisor in IE7 is greyed out. Someone knows how to fix this. Please help. I have since uninstalled the VW ETKA7 software.

I just got a new laptop and the sounds are a bit different, before when I completed spell check it would chirp, now it just pops up the completion window. Was just curious if that was a setting issue or something? No big deal, just curious
I dont' remember exactly what preceded the change (i seem to remember a windows update), but now all of the fonts on any webpage (including this one and my received emails) are font size 14 or bigger (im not sure) instead of the usual 10.

XP Home, Asus P4C800-E MB, 2 hard drives on IDE 1: both work fine at UDMA 6.Second IDE has my DVD burner in the master position and works fine at UDMA 4.I'm using the proper cable, plus I also tried a new one when installing the drive. I installed a 320 gb Seagate ST3320620A ATA100 into the Secondary Slave position and jumpered it as shown on Seagate's website (no jumpers). I made three partitions, and formatted them as per instructions in XP's Disk Management. They all show as 'healthy' in Windows. The only thing is that my computer has slowed to a crawl, with a re-boot taking about 7 minutes. I checked Dev. Mgr. and saw that the burner was at UDMA 4, but the new drive was at PIO mode, even though 'DMA if available' was selected. I tried Bob's suggestion of changing the settings back and forth and also deleting the secondary IDE channel and rebooting, but nothing works. It remains in PIO mode. I checked all the settings in the bios and they seem correct. Tried alternatives too, but it didn't change anything. On bootup, the bios screen shows all the drives correctly, the drive in question as UDMA 5. I have Windows 98SE on drive 1 on the Primary IDE with Windows XP Home on the second drive, to allow a dual boot. It has worked well until I tried installing this new hard drive. I removed it and installed it in a second machine and it is the Master on the Secondary IDE, with nothing in the slave position. Still in PIO mode. This other machine is also a dual-boot with 98SE on the first HD and XP Pro on the second, both on the Primary IDE.The 3 partitions are in NTFS format and all drives are visible in Dev. Mgr. and all partitions are visible in My Computer.
I have two computers wireless connected. What I now want to do it set up a password so hacking into the system by outsiders is as difficult as possible. I think we are talking "network key" or "Wired equivalency Privacy Key". I know nothing about setting up a wireless connection so don't want to risk disturbing the existing set up which works fine; I just want to add password access. One computer has Windows XP Home and the other Vista Home Premium. Can anyone give me some not too technical advice that will help me do this please?
