Auto check doesnt perform and asks whether check should be performed at next reboot. I give Yes and then during the next reboot the check doesnt perform and this is what is shown over there.Windows has finished checking the disk. What is to be done for this problem?
Any help will be appreciated. I'm having a problem with windows. It keeps saying this everytime I try to do a windows update.Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that helps you get the most out of your computer. You must be running a Microsoft Windows operating system in order to use Windows Update.
I was trying to perform a repair install of WINXP PRO and somehow ended up with two operating systems installed. How can I delete/uninstall the one that I just did install?
It was fine til her son installed some regular computer games you buy in a store. Then suddenly when she double clicked her desktop icons to open them instead of opening a program they would create a shortcut on the desktop though duplicating her icons. Also her mouse was making her text smaller and bigger without her having it do so. She also told me that when she was in firefox it would suddenly open up many tabs without her asking it to of the same thing. She tried to do a system restore to an earlier time but it wouldnt even let her go to the calendar to pick a date. She called me to find out if I knew anything. I got her to boot her computer in Safe Mode and run a virus scan which found nothing. To me it sounds like some sort of malware or spyware but not sure. Do you have any ideas other then reformatting the pc which is what I think her husband will end up doing unless I can find another answer.
After removing spyware and viruses from my computer, now I am not able to do windows updates in windows xp sp2. I also am unable to search for anything that I put in a search bar like google or msn search. If I type the search criteria in the search box and press GO or the GOOGLE SEARCH button, nothing happens. The word just sits there like the buttons no longer work. I also tried downloading MS Antispyware and the system would not validate. I tried downloading the online virus scanner from Trendmicro.com and when I went to select United States as my download country and pushed the button next to it to submit my choice, nothing happened.
In windows 98 there was a place in scheduled tasks where you could check a box that said someting on the order of "wake the machine to perform this task". I am wanting set my HDDs to spin down when they aren't in use but I have tasks scheduled to run when I am not around. Will XP wake the machine and run Norton and Diskeeper? Yes, after running XP all this time I still don't know it like I should. I mean I learned 2 OS's before this and I figure by the time I figure this one out Longhorn will show up and start me over again.
I use windows XP professional and Internet Explorer. In the User account on the control panel, by mistake I clicked the radio button of the limited account instead of the Adminstrator account. Now I am left with the Limited account and it does not allow me to perform many tasks. I remember the password. Please guide me so that I can get the Adminstrator account back.
i went on the windows update website, i guess launched a new update software , so i waited for it to install , then it gave the choice between cutom updates or express , so i clicked on one of them.there is a bar that comes up with green squares going thru it , and that just keeps on going forever, when i try to stop it, it would freeze the whole computer and i'll have to restart. i know it's nothing to do with the security setting in our netwrok here, because i can get windows updates on other computers on the LAN. can this be a spyware problem if so, how can i resolve. i never encountered a problem like this before.
A few days ago I was browsing the internet (wink), and randomly my desktop background changed to an image of a fake virus alert. Also, many security-related sites were blocked, and clicking on any google results redirected me to various advertising sites. Only a couple weeks prior I had this same virus, which I believe to be Smitfraud, and resolved it by running the MalwareBytes program. When I tried to do this this time, however, the program froze immediately upon starting the scan.An additional symptom I had was when I would start up Windows, If I started up in safe mode I would get the same problem, only the problematic file would be services.exe. Also I had no taskbar in safe mode. The only attempt at fixing this I really made was downloading and running SmitFraudFix.exe, but all that seemed to do was delete my Firefox bookmarks which I promptly restored.
At any rate, I could not solve this problem, so I repaired(not reinstalled) windows. Upon completing repair I ran a windows update like any sane person would, but it was unable to connect. I downloaded the manual SP3 installer and ran it, but got an access denied error. I ran AdAware & MalwareBytes successfully(both were still fully updated definitions) and they removed stuff, and I was able to connect to Windows Update, but after attempting to download the WindowsUpdate file(not the actual windows updates, but the updated WindowsUpdate if you catch my drift) I got an "Access is Denied" error, with error code 0x80070005. I repaired windows again, but the same exact pattern happened.
I have been using this PC without any problem for 6 months. I wanted to reinstall my Windows XP on my PC and tried to booting up with a bootable Windows XP_SP2 Prof CD(first boot is CD ROM). But to my surprise, the setup process in not taking place. I am getting a grey blank screen(instead of windows setup screen) after this message "Setup is inspecting your Computer's Hardware configuration".This is the case only with the Windows XP bootable CD. I have tried to boot with different WinXP CDs, but of no use. However, I am able to boot with Win 98, Win 2000 and even with Win 2003 via boot CDs.I am suspecting whether there is any problem with the motherboard, as I was able to install Windows XP Pro before on the same PC.
I need to restore my computer to an earlier date, but when i tried to find the system restore, it was not there. First i went to start, all programs, accessories, and system tools. When i saw that it was not there, i entered the run command for it. When i did that, i got the same message you would get if you enter an invalid command. After that didn't work, i entered "msconfig" in the run box, and then once the system configuration utility appeared, i went to the tools tab and highlighted System Restore, and clicked Launch. But then a window popped up saying the following: "The system cannot find the file specified". I am about 75-85% sure that the rstrui.exe file was deleted by one of the young ones fiddling around inside the system folders. What i do not know is how to get it back. I remember one time when the windows sound recorder executable file had gotten deleted, i just downloaded it from the internet, put it in the right spot and it was fixed. I can't seem to do that with the system restore executable file. Any ideas on how i can fix this?

I've had my HP computer for quite some time (5 years at least), still runs great and all. But here recently my harddrive crashed when trying to do something (still using that harddrive), when I tried to use the system restore feature from HP,it wouldn't let me, so I had to get a WindowsXP disc from someone. Using their copy of windows won't let me update windows or anything, so I decided I would just system restore using HP's system restore. (Format and reinstall my windows), but when I hit the F10 at bootup, it does nothing
I had printer sharing set up the first time everything went smoothly. I have 2 pc's on a network 1 is xp home the other xp pro. I have a failed installation of MS Office 2000 that I need to remove from my XP Home system. The failure appears to be related to the CD because the uninstall also fails. Is there any way to remove the application without the CD? Unfortunately there dont appear to be any restore points set in the system restore.
I just did clean install of XP on my new Dell D630 notebook and have a problem.I've done plenty of clean installs before and never run into these problems.I checked the Device Manager after installing my drivers/windows updates. For some reason,I'm showing 2 ACPI Batteries,2 965 Chipsets,3 plug and play monitors, 2 Core Duo processors, and several system boards... all I can think of is that there may be newer drivers I need to download (I used the drivers/ utilities disk). I actually had 2 copies of Windows XP showing up when I booted, but one was not actually present, so I deleted it from the boot.ini file, which did nothing.
I've tried unsuccessfully to restore my windows xp to a prior date, following the tutorial, with the response: "your system was unable to be restored to the prior date."
I have an external hard drive that I have assigned it a permanent hard drive letter reference through Disk Management. I have set the System Restore tab in My Computer Properties tab to not moniter this external hard drive K. Problem is that every now and then when I plug in every now and then for backing up my files via Briefcase - this will activate the System Restore function on that hard drive. This usually happens when I have the hard drive plugged in when I either turn off or turn on my computer. I stopped having the hard drive plugged in to hopefully stop the stop the System Restore on that hard drive (and then re-checked the System Restore tab)
I'm running Windows XP and i have this OS 2000 PLATINUM EDITION boot up program that interferes with and stops my startup asking me to register when i don't really need this program can someone help me eliminate this program from my startup
I have an older PC running XP Home that I know only has USB 1.1 ports.
How do I permanently stop the "This USB device can perform faster if you connect it to a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port. For a list of available ports, click here." balloon pop-up whenever I plug in a USB 2.0 device? This reminder is starting to be as annoying as MS-Office's Clippy or the Windows Search Assistant dog.
im running windows xp home and im trying 2 find the log for chkdsk as i ran a scan but the results never stayed up long enough 2 read so is there a log somewhere ?
I was trying to defrag my aunt's comuter witht the Windows (xp home) built in defragger. I got an error message that said to run scan disk or chkdsk. While I'm familiar with scan disk, I know it's not an option on xp. So I went to "start", "run", and typed in chkdsk and hit ok...up pops a dos window and it says something to the fact of : "f parameter not specified. running chkdsk in read only mode", and then it does a quick run and nothing happens. I still can't defrag. How do I run chkdsk.
I keep getting and error message Windows - Corrupt File - The file or directory C:|$MFT is corrupt and unreadable. Please run Chkdsk utility. I have run the utility many times and get nothing but verification of files. I can't turn on either /f or /r. which would hopefully correct the problem. I am using Windows XP Home.
exactly what do I put in the "run" part to check the below error message?. C:PROGRA~1common FilesAOLACSSinf.ini is corrupt and unreadable please run the Chkdisk utility.
To bring you up to date here is what I said last time MY ORIGINAL POST I am running Win XP SP2. The last 3 times I turned on the computer it put itself through CHKDSK. Each time finding loads of problems with $130 also loads of orphaned files. What is going on? How do I fix it? Ray
HERE IS THE ADVICE I RECEIVED Go to All Programs>Accessories>Command prompt and type chkdsk /r (there is a space before /) Enter Reboot and it will run
NOW
I followed the advice and it all worked perfectly for the next 2 times that I turned on my computer. This morning I turned on and it was back to going through CHKDSK again.
I have up to date AVG anti virus. I ran a full system check. Nothing found. I have up to date Spybot. I ran a full system check. Nothing found. I hace Comodo Firewall. Up to date I ran Registry Mechanic.
I am using an IBM Thinkpad R40 that runs XP. It was running extremely slow, so I asked someone for some ideas. The first thing they told me to do was run a CHKDSK. (start run ect.) and walked me through the scheduling process. Well, when I rebooted, it took 4 plus hours, to tell me an error had occured and I am stuck looking at a blue screen. If I let it sit long enough, it repeats the process. I have attempted to cancel the check, but again it freezes on the blue screen. I have attempted to start it in safe-mode with the same result. How do I get to windows?
