You may not have the appropriate permission to acceess this item ." A couple of shortcuts I can open & they work fine. My e mail program, Outlook Express, & Mailwasher, will not work at all. Specifically, this error appears when attempting to open one of these: On some help forums rundll32 was pointed to as the cause of the problem, and I found entries in Comodo's Defense+ Log where various programs (mostly explorer.exe) were calling rundll32.exe, but it was being blocked everytime.I have tried disabling Comodo (and ending the proccess) but it doesn't make a difference.

View 1 Replies View RelatedThis afternoon I downloaded a new anti-virus AVG which was recommended in a top 25 programs for your computer on, I believe, switched.com. After downloading it and trying to install it, I suddenly am getting 'Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item' for almost every action I wish to do. This includes, but is not limited to, opening AOL, opening Add/Remove programs in control panel, opening files on 'my computer', disk cleanup says that it's not there, I can't even change appearance of desktop or screensaver, through rightclicking on the desktop and clicking properties (the problem comes when I click properties). The only things I seem to be able to do right now are use Internet explorer and play games (although force quit still seems to work, but I don't see anything unusual there to turn off). I have Windows XP on a Compaq, that is two years old. I bought it at Best Buy but can not find any sign of a Windows XP disk.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI've got an HP Pavilion 540n that is riddled with viruses. HP doesn't ship with recovery discs. I was able to use the recovery tool but now when the machine boots I get the Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file error when trying to run anything. I can't boot to safe mode and have tried running fixmbr but it did not help. I tried running malwarebytes and combofix but I get the error above. I would wipe it and reload the OS but since HP doesn't ship with any CD's I don't have a disc to load.

I have a volume control icon at my system tray...then, all of the sudden, the icon shows a "mute" status...i tried to unmute it by double-clicking the icon to access the volume control...nothing happened...i went to Control Panel>Sound and Audio Devices...also, nothing happened...i thought that this applet (mmsys.cpl) in C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32 was corrupted, so i tried to run it from other folder containing that file but still, nothing happened...at this point, i don't think that all 3 files were corrupted...the only way to control the volume , and to mute/unmute is by using the Creative Surround Mixer (i have an Audigy sound card),which work flawlessly...The wierd part is, even i unmute from here, the volume icon at the system tray still shown as 'mute'..but i can still hear all the sounds and songs...Then, I've discovered that in AudioHQ (also from Creative software), under the View>Multimedia Propertis, I CAN actually access the 'Sound and Audio Devices' applet...this will open the 'Audio' tab...other tabs like 'Sound', 'Voice' and 'Hardware' is also accessible from here, BUT, when opening the 'Volume' tab, it hangs...i could't access this applet any longer...the only way to close it is to end the process (rundll32.exe) in the task manager.That's why i conclude that the volume tab in the applet is problematic.

I tried with all the usb ports on this computer and problem is the same. Even by hooking up a usb keyboard or mouse, computer wont get to the login screen. it keeps on restarting. I have deleted and it restalled the drived after the system rebooted. Device manager still saying unknown device. Their is not driver needed according to the manufacture. When the PC is booting it does see the IPOD mini and the Flash drive. But once the PC is fully out and login and I look a the device manager is still reporting unlnown device error (code 10).

This morning, when I opened iTunes I got a message that there was no audio device detected. After trying several things, I rebooted. Magically, I could play music again. However, a short while later, I again got an error message telling me that there is no audio device found, even though it shows up in Device Manager as working properly. The problem goes away for a short time after I reboot, but returns. It is Realtek AC 97. Why won't my computer keep recognizing it? (It tried going to Realtek's site to download an update. It has updates for Windows 98, 95, etc., but not for XP. Or at least I couldn't find it.)

I've searched forums half the night since this drive contains financial data that hasn't been backed up for a month (yes, bad practice, I know) and I need to get it working. I don't know the time, but it happens at least 30 days after I reinstall the OS and software. Today, my computer prompted me to install drivers for a PCI Input Device, but I haven't installed any new hardware for months. Basically, I haven't touched the inside of my computer for that long. So why is Device Manager prompting me to install this mystery device? Hardware ID shows that it is from vendor 1102, which is Creative, and I have an Audigy 1. Also, my FireWire port is Code 10, the device cannot start. So I'm thinking the mystery device is the same firewire port. But why show up as a separate device? I tried removing the devices and restarting the computer, but they return to haunt me again. The device properties for the PCI Input Device says PCI SLOT 7, AND I DONT HAVE A 7th slot! Can someone help me, please? Device manager shows my 1394 Net Adapter with a yellow exclamation, and it has code 10, device cannot start. There is an unknown device, the PCI Input Device, which doesn't allow me to install any drivers for it, yet it has the creative Vendor ID 1102. It shows itself as being PCI Slot 7.

View 3 Replies View RelatedThe system seems to be very stable at this point in time. I run Norton Utilities and other maintenance sw as well as have a firewall/pest remover/anti-virus. Behavior - most things work fine on the USB ports, either the hub or direct connects. One digital camera will only work when direct connected(not thru the hub). I have a scanner that will only work on a 2003 Compaq Presario, but not on the whitebox on any port. Also, I have had two devices that won't work at all. I have noticed that the USB mass storage device icon doesn't seem to be present now when I attach a flash drive. This is recent behavior and doesn't predate every USB problem.

I just had a call from a friend who, after installing google tool bar (by "mistake" )then used the search function and removed all of the files by hand .The end result was that the pc hung, and when she restarted explorer.exe does not start,(therefore no desktop, start menu etc) task manager does however function and i have managed to get her to open programs that way As she deleted the files to the recycle bin i was wondering if there is a way to restore them by opening the recycle bin threw task manager? if there is then presumably i would need to give her the file path, and was wondering :-
