Broken CD Writer
Jun 1, 2008I have replaced my harddrive and do not use my cd writer anymore. It has not worked in 2 years and I save files to the USB memory sticks. Is there a way to make restore "disks" without using cd's?

May 23, 2009I have windows XP installed, service pack 3, and fully updated. As is all my anti-virus software etc, etc.My PC had a DVD Rom drive and a CD RW drive. I have just installed a new LiteOn DVD writer, making 3 drives in total. Everything works absolutely perfect. I can copy DVD's on the fly from my DVD Rom, and every other aspect of my PC is fine. All three drives work great. Except, now, my PC won't hibernate! It use to be able to robustly carry out this function with no issues. But as soon as I installed the DVD Writer, it will no longer work. I can make the PC hibernate manually by going to the computer 'turn off' option, and click 'hibernate' but it won't automatically do it after a set time. I have played about with the hibernation settings for ages but it makes no difference. How can I make my PC hibernate automatically like it use to?

Jun 5, 2008I recently got the 'blue screen' on my IBM NetVista. various tech people and was told that 1.) my hard drive was gone; 2.) a bad virus had taken over the 'puter; and various other things. Being stubborn Scots-Irish, I decided to see what I could do before I gave up.
Started computer again, tapping the F8 key while it was booting up......ran all the system diagnostic tests and passed them, so I knew it wasn't the hard drive. Finally got it to boot back up, but of course, had lost all my data; ran all my recover info and got everything back except my 'Record Now' feature, which allows me to make data discs, copy existing discs, It should have been on one of the original discs that came with the computer, but I can't find it.
Problem is, I want to save all my documents, games, addresses and such as back-up. How can I do that without my Record Now feature?
Is there a way to find that specific program on my Recovery discs and install lit to make my back-up copies? I haven't tried to copy to the floppy discs because it takes so many of them.
Cd Writer Driver Error Code 39
Sep 28, 2005my computer with xp was running fine until i found that it was not showing my cd drive. I've checked the neccesary connection and they were all fine. the device manager shows the drive with a yellow sign giving error code 39 which says that driver is corrupt or missing. now my cd drive is a plug and play and does not have any driver bundled with it. uninstalling and reinstaling the drive wont help. xp detect the new hardware at the start up but again same problem.i wanted to reinstall xp but since cd drive is not available i tried to run it from hard disk. but it too was not running.

Pro Fax Printer Reinstalls As Document Image Writer
Jul 8, 2005My fax printer driver must have become corrupted because the console said there was no printer driver installed. I went to Add Windows Components, added Fax again and nothing happened. Went to Printers/Add Printer and let the wizard add a fax driver and it came up with a Microsoft Office Document Image Driver on LPT1. Fax Console still complains there is no fax driver, so I'm assuming that's the wrong printer driver.I'd like to force the install of a printer driver but I don't know what port it's supposed to be on and where to go to look for the driver.

Dec 27, 2009A few months ago, I thought my reliable internal DVD writer was finally on its last legs. When I would play it, it would stutter, play a DVD disk slightly at less than normal speed, and the audio had a slight echo to it. So I bought a new one (an LG). After 4 months, it had the same problem. I replaced it. The new one has the same problem. My external DVD writer seems to work fine. So, rather than the writer, I think it might be a driver issue?

Aug 2, 2006I have put a DVD write drive in a dell computer now I am getting 3 short beeps when I try to boot up and it does not boot up. But if I leave it off for a few minutes it does boot up and works normal. I did put another memory stick in but it was beeping before this. Could it be anything to do with the power supply atx psu 250? I am not on it at the moment I dont know what type of bios it has. I have checked the two drives both seem ok when singly attached I did not need to but I have checked the memory 1 stick at a time seems ok. the other drive is a dvd rom plays but wont burn. Could it be a faulty EIDE cable I got a new one with the new drive but I did not use it.

Jan 7, 2008Some USB things work fine- others not at all (but work on other computers.) My XP machine has always worked fine in recognizing USB devices-- but recently did not recognize my scanner and two USB thumb drives (one brand new and one I've had for a couple years). The Thumb drives and scanner work fine on other computers.
he same machine uses a USB mouse and a USB connection to my printer (Brother HL-1440). They continue to work fine. I noticed it first with the scanner- It worked fine before New Year-- but not since. Then tried Thumb drives and recognized the same pattern. (Again, they work fine on other computers).Is it possible that Plug-n-Play is broken? With XP the drives are �built-in� and have always recognized Thumb drives (or external hard drives, etc). I did try uninstalling the driver for the Scanner and installing it again- to no avail.

May 16, 2007For approximately the past two months my background is set to a solid color. Believe me I have searched everywhere and tried just about everything. I cannot change the picture, only the color that I set for icon backgrounds. That sounds kind of confusing but I don't know how else to word it. Jun 17, 2010im using xp sp2 and i downloaded ancanced windows care3 and did a deep registry clean, it found 900 more problems than my noraml registry cleaner(tune-up utilities) so i decided do it. after i rebooted i played a game and my computer just froze still. i now have this persisting freezing that generally when i play a game or watch movies(otherwise it seems to be fine but does happen sometimes while even just idle or looking through files). i really think its my registry.

Sep 16, 2007My laptop (windows XP pro) prompts me on start up to press ctlr+alt+del before it allows me to put my username and password to access windows. Now when i press ctrl-alt-del nothing happens so i cant get to the box to enter my log on details and get into windows... This is what I have tried
1. different ctrl-alt-del methods (only one del button so i am assuming that del is broken)
2. plugged in USB keyboard but it wont work (there are no PS2 ports on laptop to use either). I am guessing since windows isnt initiated then USB ports wont respond
4. booting in Safe mode doesnt bypass the ctrl-alt-del screen
5. tried installing a new laptop keyboard but too difficult to get out
6. tried XP recovery but i cant press numbers to select 1:Windows XP so im guessin the number keys dont work either

It worked fine, but now the driver is broken, and I can't uninstall or reinstall it.I need to fully wipe it from my registry, harddrive, et al, in order to do a fresh install. I am somewhat computer literate, but still a bit wary of fiddling with the registry without knowing exactly what I am doing.Thought I should add that the bundled software uninstall doesn't work, nor does the Device Manager's. When I attempt to uninstall from the device manager, I get a message like "failed to uninstall, device may be required to boot". I need a manual removal.

Jan 30, 2009I have a windows XP box with SP 3. Once booted into Windows I immediately start getting Windows Installer trying to install something. Clearly there is a failed installation in there that windows installer keeps trying to install but can't. When try to intall something new I get the "This happens with windows in running in safe mode or windows installer is installed incorrectly" message. I tried installing windows installer 3.1, but it tells me it is already installed and quits. I tried installing the Windows Intaller Cleanup program that RProffit linked to, but then I get the windows installer is broken message and it can't install. Seems like I am in for a reformat and reload?

I was out of town all week; however, while using our PC Mon evening, a loud clunk noise from the tower; the screen went black; and when the screen came back up, everything was stretched out horizontally and concave.
Hubby tried booting it up it did come up with the image all broken into blocks and stretched horizontally and concave.

Jan 21, 2008I have a laptop that I just got my hands on, it's a Dell Inspiron 8200, has windows XP Pro (service pack 2) on it. I need to reformat it, however, the cd drive doesnt really work anymore (this is the second cd drive its had). I would rather not spend money on a cd drive or anything, and was wondering if there was anyway to use a boot disk to format it, then if there was any way to install network drivers and use a network to install windows. That at least is my present theory of how to go about this, but I'm not sure if it's even possible, and I'm searching around online right now.
