Workgroup Not Accessible - Cannot Access Files
Oct 2, 2007
I've had no problem with my workgroup network until today...when Comcast installed a new Business Router/Modem. Since then, my main desktop is not part of my workgroup. Actually, other computers on the network can still see my desktop as part of the View Workgroup Computers...BUT when I try to access files on other computers that I've been able to all along, I can't....it says Workgroup Not Accessible.

I have 4 PC's all running WinXP/SP3 on a workgroup using simple sharing. All PC's had access to all other PC's shared folders and external backup drives. Norton Ghost worked successfully from each PC, writing to either of two external backup hd (one ea on two of the four PC's). Life was good. Then I moved two PC's and changed the Computer Name on each. Now I am able to access the My Documents shared folder from/to any computer, but I'm unable to access the external backup harddrives. I have admin privledges on all machines.

It seems my HDD doesn't seem to be on according to System Restore under status. Device Manager also comes up with nothing, however my GFX card seems to be working even though it is not being detected. I can access all the files in my HDD too. I have no other HDD plugged in or CD Drives in (the CD drive worked when it was in). Also, the bars and such seem to be in the Windows 98 style not XP, as if it was in safe mode. I have looked at the msconfig and it is on normal start up however it is not working. I also cannot change the computers name, etc.I have tried to reinstall Windows but it comes up "0x0000007B (0xF78D2524, 0xc0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000". I have googled this and things have come up but they do not suite my situation as I only have 1 HDD (And yes it is plugged in properly as well as the CD drive).I would also like to ask if a HDD should be the Master IDE or whether the CD drive should be.

My friend's computer seized up in the middle of the boot. Tried recovery, but it isn't able to go forward. The hard drive seemed to be spinning tho, so chances were good we could recover the data. I removed the hard drive and copied everything to a back-up external drive using my own computer. Replaced the hard drive in the disabled computer. Question is how do I install Windows XP? The recovery files on the hard drive are not accessible, I assume, so we can't use those - right? We misplaced the disks that came with the computer, so I'm buying a new copy of Windows XP.

computer in my possession crashed, and when i reset, my internet has gone wonky. I use MSN as my ISP, and before, i could access internet explorer, or firefox, or any program without ever actually having to sign in to MSN. after the crash, however, i now have to sign in to access internet explorer, firefox, and a couple programs. what angers me, however, is that i DONT have to sign in to access trillian. Limewire, also, will connect, but wont download anything without msn being logged in. How do i get back to how it was? And no, system restore did not work.

I did a terrible mistake today. Typically I install XP in C drive and keep My Documents folder in D drive. All of my hard disk drives (except the linux partitions) are NTFS. I encrypted the My Documents folder and all of its files and subfolders.Today I reinstalled XP in the C drive, after a quick format on it. I was unaware of the fact that what might be happened to My Documents folder. Now I can only view the files and folders inside My Documents folder. Neither I open any file, nor I decrypt those files. Windows is saying access denied.

I have just changed from a domain to a workgroup and now I can not log on. I wanted to share a library on my stationary PC with my wireless connected
laptop. After having established a new workgroup, confirming via my password and
restarting the laptop, I can't use the password anymore...What happened and what do i do to get reconnected?

I just picked up a Sony Vaio laptop F270. From what I can gather is it has (2) separate partitions. I want to do a complete wipe/format of the HD and get back to having (1) Large partition

I am adding a computer to my home network. All computers connect to the internet and each other through a wireless router, and belong to the same workgroup. All computers are Windows XP Pro SP2, except the new computer, which is XP Home SP2. A Firewall is enabled on all computers--the Windows firewall on the new computer, and Norton Worm Protection on the others.
If I run the Network Setup Wizard on the new computer, this completes successfully. But after rebooting, when I select View Workgroup Computers in Network tasks, I get a message saying that the workgroup is inaccessible.

This would perform a somewhat similar task as winpopup does.1. Goto command prompt (to do this, click on the start menu and select run, then type in cmd)2.Type net send * (your message)Note: the * would send the message to all of the computeres in the same workgroup as you. To send the message to a specific computer, type in the computer's ip address.

I have a LAN at home with 4 computers on it. They are all in the same workgroup, and all except 1 work fine, but on 1 computer i have the following problems:If i click view workgroup computers, it says i do not have permission to acces it, even though i have my workgroup set the same as on the other 3 computers. If i type the name of another computer into explorer like this: \workPC it says it cannot find it, while on other 2 computers it works (and on the 3rd too of course, since that one is called workPC). Also remote desktop connection doesn't work if i type in workPC, but it works on the other 3 computers.
But the other 3 computers cannot see this 4th computer either, it doesn't show up when i click view workgroup computers. It's as if it wasn't in the workgroup, even though i've triple checked it and it's the same as on all other computers.I can, however, access all other 3 computers via IP, like \192.168.0.5 and such, and that works, it also works via IP for remote desktop connection.
The problem that bothers me most, though, is that i cannot remote desktop into this 4th computer, even though remote desktop is enabled and it should work. I can remote desktop to other 3 computers from this computer, but not the other way around. When i try to connect to it (via IP since it doesn't work via it's name), it asks me for the username and password. I enter those correctly, then i get a warning i always get (something about "Remote Desktop cannot verify the identitfy of the computer you want to connect to." (and so on)). After i click yes (*i want to connect anyway*), it just returns me to the window that asks you for the name of the computer to connect to, and that's it.

I have installed this OS on a new Fujitsu PRIMERGY TX150 S4. Now I want just to use this Server as a server on a Workgroup. But the OS insists that it should be the Domain Controller. And then it just shuts it self down. Below is a log from the event viewer. Just don't really want to configure the entire Lan from workgroup to Domain.

I have a computer that has been running XP pro for a long time. I would like
to join it to a domain, but have found out by experience that my "domain
user" and my "workgroup user" are two completely different people. Can I use
the file and settings transfer wizard to transfer my "workgroup user"
settings to my "domain user" settings and then delete my "workgroup user?"
Are there any security concerns (e.g. run as administrator) that I need to be
aware of

I have recently formatted my computer and reinstalled Windows. I had over 120 Gbs worth of video files I needed to keep, but since I only had about 20 Gbs of free HD space I created a new partition in the free space, put in as many files as would fit in it, expand the partition and repeated the procedure until all of the files were safely in the new partition. I then formatted the primary partition, installed Windows XP SP1 and then updated it fully (so now I have XP Home SP2 with the latest updates). Then I defragmented the C drive, merged the partitions and defragmented again. Now I cannot access (or actually use, since I can see them but I cannot open, move or delete) the files. Whenever I try to open the video files I get a error whichever media player I use (Windows Media Player, Winamp, VLC), and if I try to move or delete any of those files I get an error from Windows telling me to check whether the file is in use, write protected or if the disk is full or that I do not have enough permissions to perform that action. The only way I am able to move or delete those files is using a freeware app called "Unlocker", which reports that there are no programs currently using/locking those files (not even Explorer), but it does allow me to move or delete them (obviously I want to be able to open the files, not get rid of them).
There were other files and folders in the partition that I merged into C: (using Partition Magic) but only the files in the folder that had the movies (as well as some srt, sub and idx subtitle files) are affected by this issue.

I cannot access my files any longer.
I installed WinXP on my desktop. You know the point at USER profile where you are asked whether to make files private or not?
I chose to make files private.
Recently my OS got corrupt and I had to repair it. The CD was not loading well, so I used another copy of WinXP.
The new OS installed by my private files cannot be accessed.
I slaved hard and installed WinXP on another hard as master by still, I cant access the hard.
Trying to open it would tell the folder (user folder) cannot be accessed with that irritating system sound.

I had an 80GB hard drive with an installation of Windows XP SP2 when the attack happended, as a result of the attack, I can no longer launch Windows.
I have since, installed another instance of Windows XP SP2 onto the same harddrive into a different folder. I can access this instance of windows fine, however when I try to browse to my other windows folder to access my files, I cannot.
