Vista More Userfriendly - Find Things Online

I'm sure a lot of people might think XP's pretty user-friendly, but have you taken the time to find the more harder-to-reach settings? I've ran across some stuff on XP that just confused the hell out of me, and I'm sure some of this stuff is actually in dire need of changing. Seems like Microsoft likes to set all the settings in XP to the "stupid" ones, because after doing some tweaking of random things, stuff like download speeds and whatever go a lot faster.Also, I know this is either common knowledge or not official, but I'm dying to know the release date and price of Vista. Please don't tell me to search for it, I'll be honest, I SUCK at finding things online.

I have been trying to dual boot my 2 operating systems which are on 2 separate sata drives for some time. I have read around and can't find a solutions that seems like it should or would work for me. I have 3 hard drives 2 sata and 1 ide, the ide just has music mp3's. I used to dual boot my 2 XP operating systems just fine by changing the boot.ini but I can't find the correct way to choose the numbers with my new Vista installation

I recently downgraded my Gateway Notebook MT6841 (http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/...4584Rsp3.shtml) from Vista to XP.for obvious reasons.I was thrilled to find out that they dont supply drivers for the Mobo's Video card, audio, and modem drivers for XP.

My brother has a Dell laptop that came pre-loaded with Vista. He asked me to remove it and install XP for him. I've re-installed XP on several computers but I'm stuck here.
When I boot from my XP disk, I press enter to install a new copy of XP, but then it says it cannot find a hard drive and setup cannot continue

I'm trying to make a dual boot system Vista/XP with my HP Media Center purchased in 2007 with Vista pre-installed. Inside Vista I created the partition for XP (disk D and rebooted with the 'XP Pro SP2' inside. After selecting its correct partition for installing it copies all files on hard disk and it reboots in order to start its installation, upon rebooting and starting first time from hard disk, it says that there is an error in the system and stops. If I install only XP on the system it works correctly even though some newest hardware is not recognized. I had already made a dual boot two years ago with a 2007 XP Student Edition and it smoothly. If it is due to the XP version being too old that maybe cannot deal with the boot record created by Vista
Or perhaps such an old XP cannot recognize a boot hard disk that is not C:?
Is there a way to bypass this point (perhaps fixing the boot record) in order to continue correctly the installation?

I originally had Vista Business edition on my laptop and decided to dual boot with XP. So far I created a partition on the same drive (C: ) as Vista and installed XP on it. how do I choose between Vista and XP when my computer boots up? When I turn on my computer it boots straight into XP and doesn't show that menu where it gives me a choice of which OS I want to boot

Is it possible to have a Vista based system and then load XP on the same system and switch between the two. I know mac's have something similar to this but i have an HP dv7 pavilion notebook with an AMD Turion x2 Dual-core mobile RM-70 2ghz processor, 4 gb of ram, ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics chip set, and 156GB of free harddrive space

just ordered a new pc that is on its way pre loaded with WIN XP PRO SP2. It also come with a free VISTA BUSSINES upgrade. I want to set up a dual boot system when i get my VISTA disk. should i use partition magic and set up a new partition for vista or is there a better way of doing this

I initially started with XP and created a separate partition for Vista, installing Vista on the other partition, Vista sees the (XP) Earlier version of windows. When I choose XP, I get the following error: NTOSKRNL.EXE is missing or corrupt. If I repair the XP with fixmbr - I end up screwing up Vista. Then when I repair Vista, it end's screwing up XP

I was dual booting XP and Vista but didn't want Vista anymore. So I got rid of Vista, and that's all said and done now. Problem is, the boot loader is still coming up telling me to choose between "Earlier Version of Windows" and "Windows Vista". How to I get rid of it without using Vista's boot manager?

I'm currently running Vista on a raid 0 array, and want to dual with XP. I have two partitions, one with vista and the other that I tried installing XP on. After it finishes the initial installation and restarts it says to press any key to boot from the CD. I wait without pressing anything and than it says that there was an error reading the disk. If I remember correctly, after it restarts it goes strait into windows setup. This happens every time I try restarting, but I can get back into vista by putting the hard drive to boot first. In vista I can see the other partition where XP was installed, and inside is just a folder titled WINDOWS and it seems like all the windows files are in there

It had Windows vista in it and she had someone put Windows XP in it. It now has a virus and my friend wants Vista put back in it. I have a cd here that says TOSHIBA recovery and applications / drivers, Satellite A130/ A135 series, Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit. I put this cd in the rom and restarted. it did nothing. just loaded XP up again.

I have recently just moved to another city. I had Comcast broadband service before which worked great and now Im hooking up with Comcast again on the same computer but in a different city. But somehow my computer (home pc) cant get back online anymore. Do I have to do some kind of reset on ip address? please advise. I'm using XP Pro service pack 2.

I reformated a mans pc the other day here at home but i took it to his house to get port #'s to get online for updates.We got 3 updates restarted and went back to updates and got pop ups galore.reformatted again OFF-LINE and still got pop ups. I have the pc at home again. What am i dealing with here?I am now in the process of installing ONLY the XP CD and not the other 3.

It has been 5 days since this problem started. The computer freezes, sort of lags for about 2-3 seconds only while I'm online. It happens about every 15 seconds, but sometimes gets random. Offline there is no problem. I'm on a wireless network (Netgear), none of the other computers have this problem. While it freezes I can still move the mouse and click things but nothing loads for the 2-3 seconds. I'm getting normal temperatures on the PC so I don't believe it's overheating.I did a system restore and it didn't fix the problem. I have also ran several antivirus scans with AVG Pro 7 and PC-Cillin 2005. I've also done scans for worms such as bagle. I've ran Spybot/AdAware/MS Antispyware several times, no pick ups.

My computer has been freezing randomly for the past couple of days. I have run spybot, microsoft anti-spyware, ad-aware, and norton. Found a bunch of spyware that was successfully removed. No viruses detected at all. Had a friend who does tech support remove a bunch of startup items on my computer too. I usually have my computer connected to the Internet (cable modem), however, just to see what would happen i disconnected it during the day yesterday and it hadn't frozen by the time i got home. It appears that if i'm disconnected from the Internet my computer has no problems, however when connected sometimes it'll freeze after 5 min, sometimes after a few hours. When it freezes i loose control of everything: no mouse movement, caps lock key light won't turn on etc. have to press the reset button each time. Then it starts up and works fine. The computer i'm using is a Toshiba Satellite A-70 notebook. OS is Windows XP. Up until a couple days ago i had no problems with it at all.

Apologies for not scrolling through reams of searches but I'm struggling to get to grips with my 'new' XP computer. Sadly, my much loved '98 computer bit the dust on 14th March (as the result of something I allowed a security program to do), and I was unable to revive it.Now I am back online and having to d/l and reinstall all the programs I had on the old computer I find I have things spread over three User Accounts!! I have been looking through the Help files but I thought someone might know of a useful online 'idiots guide' which could get me off to a less confusing start?

I recently tried to use my webshots program to install their calendar to my desktop, and it wound up sending my computer into 'safe mode'. So a friend installed Windows XP Pro for me, and it worked beautifully, got the computer up and running again just fine....but now I can't get online. No internet what-so-ever. I called my internet service Tech guys, they sent me a new modem, and everything there works fine this friend also lent me her old computer, which is what I am using right now, which is how I know the stuff works.

I hope this is the correct forum for my problem. I'm unable to get online on my notebook computer although I can log on using my desktop computer! This is driving me crazy, I've tried everything I know, rebooting, system restore, virus check, ran spysweeper, checked the settings in internet options/connections, did renewal of ipconfig/all, etc, but all to no avail. I have a pentium M with Windows XP Home Edition SP2 and have a dlink router connecting both computers via ethernet cables. The internet connection icon in the taskbar area shows that I'm connected, But when I try to open a web browser (IE) I'm getting a "Cannot find server....page cannot be displayed".

Hi All. My problem is this. I have a legal copy of XP Pro (OEM) installed on this computer. The hardware is very dated (about 6yrs, AMD 1800+, AGP 2, PC2100 ram) and I want to upgrade to new stuff. So being a good citizen I called Microsoft and ask the question, "How do I legally install the legal copy on my new equipment while uninstalling it from the old?" The old hardware is not going to be reused, just to old and slow. Two reps from M$ told me that I could not use my legal copy with the new hardware while one said that I could but had to uninstall it somehow while online so they could verify and activate it for the new stuff. They never got around to telling me how to do that. I take that as a no that they won't allow the 2nd use. So what OS would you choose at the moment? I think I am going to try to reuse the current copy. If that doesn't work I'll repurchase, but which? XP Pro, XP Home, XP 64, Vista, Vista home, Vista 64? I understand that SP1 for Vista has gone into beta so it shouldn't be long to get that. If anyone has some input or experience I would greatly apperciate it. Does anyone think that this is wrong? I'm not trying to cheat M$, as I said it is a legal copy. Any Microsoft employees out there? If I want to reuse a piece of hardware no prob right? Seems to me to be the same thing. Anyway tell me what you think and thanks.

PS: By the way I use the machine for general purpose computing and gaming which is why I need to upgrade. I have been getting Fragged alot in UT2K4.

I have an Athlon XP 2400 and 80gb with 40gb hard-drive. My USB is very tempermental. Somethings work. Somethings don't. My gut re-action is that it is an external power issue as my printer was working. Strangely, my optical mouse is working fine. There is only one thing I can think of. Could it be a USB 2.0 problem as I have only 1. Please help. Where do I get drivers from? Do I even need drivers.

I went to Start/Run and all my things were gone such as regedit, msconfig etc. replaced by hundreds of past URLS I've been to. How can this be possible since I don't use Start/Run to go to websites? I can't delete them either. How do I get rid of them. Agent Ransack can't find them on my PC and my Temp and Temporary Internet folders are empty. How can I get rid of these old URLs?

I posted this in the hardware forum, but since I posted that thread other things have been happening that make me think it could be a virus.My mouse was working fine up until last night, when my computer started behaving strangely. I would move my mouse across my desk and it would work fine, before the cursor simply stopped moving. I was still moving my mouse, but the cursor wasn't moving at all. It does this in every direction, and it happens at random times. I thought it might just be a problem with the optical tracking, but something else is happening today too. Whenever the cursor stops moving the mouse sometimes jumps to another part of the screen, this also occurs randomly. Even if I'm moving the mouse right it could jump to the lower left hand corner of the screen. It also clicks itself randomly, both left and right clicks. This means it's not just a problem with the optical tracking. I'm a big FPS player, so this isn't exactly what I need, especially when my gun fires randomly and the mouse stops tracking in a firefight.

Renewed my firewall(Zone alarm extreme) subscription. Downloaded an upgrade and thought(first mistake) it was done. I stepped away from my computer for awhile and my wife sits down to get online. IE8 doesnt pull up so she restarts the computer. NOW...the firewall program is nowhere to be found. Actually when I do a file search, it is an incomplete file. The program isnt in add/remove programs either. Also, IE doesnt allow me access to the internet. I'm using a laptop now through a router which my desktop(the one with the problem) uses. When Windows does a diagnostic test, it suggest that there is a problem with the cables. Theres nothing wrong with the cables. My system restore doesnt work either. Is there a back door to getting online I'm sure that since the Zone alarm wasnt complete, it shut something down.
