Very Slow Start Up And Strange Things Happening
Mar 7, 2010
my laptop has become very slow in starting up. Up to ten minutes in fact! It goes throuygh all processes as normal, but just takes ten times longer. Also, my mouse and curser are acting strange. the curser judders across the screen rather than moving in a smoth normal motion, and it occasionally dissapears completely for a second or two. All programs take ages to load and generally my PC is taking 5-10 times longer to do anything than it normaly does.Everything was fine up until 2 or 3 days ago when this started happening. I have NOT downloaded anything over the past week.I attach my HT log

Running XP Home, SP2 w/1 gig. All of a sudden my machine is beginning to do strange things. First of all my second hard drive (D disappeared...it didn't show in My Computer. "Add New Hardware" didn't bring it back. Then, all of a sudden it was back. Secondly, something changed my screensaver, but I was able to restore it the usual way. I've used Registry First Aid to check on registry content, and, I've run a virus scan (NAV) and I've defragged the drive. Also, neither Counterspy nor Spybot could find anything wrong.

I know this sounds crazy, but for the last two or three days...my computer will be online and then about three hours later...I am offline. What could cause that? then a box kept coming up asking what connection I wanted to use and if I pressed one, it would dial up and thank God, in a way..an error message came up. I supposed I should never have entereded anything in that box.

I have a proble+m with +my keyboard. When I hit certain keys +my co+mputer does strange things. Here's a list of things I've found wrong:
"u" brings up windows standby +mode.
"end" places a period where the cursor is.
"m" types +m
"7" opens my IE home page
right bracket - shuts down windows
I haven't knowingly changed and key settings. Virus scan co+mes up negative.

I went to Start/Run and all my things were gone such as regedit, msconfig etc. replaced by hundreds of past URLS I've been to. How can this be possible since I don't use Start/Run to go to websites? I can't delete them either. How do I get rid of them. Agent Ransack can't find them on my PC and my Temp and Temporary Internet folders are empty. How can I get rid of these old URLs?

If I knew what was going wrong; I'd fix it. As I don't I've posted the issue here in the XP section, as everything I have done so far indicates some kind of software problem.A week ago (thereabouts) Windows XP start-up was much slower than usual. The start-up screen takes twice as long, the login screen is unresponsive for some time, and once logged-in it takes much longer than it should. There are a host of other issues. The audio is regularly distorted / skipping - it's especially noticable at login where that interminable jingle is really garbled. iTunes is much less responsive than usual. It seems to be in general though, that processes run slower and stutter. It's just particularly noticeable with audio.

Recently developed a problem with very slow shutdown and startup both. With no programs running, it takes about a minute and a half to shut down, about two to boot up, and about five to load programs after I select user. During the program load, the hard drive is running like crazy, with Task Manager showing a lot of use by explorer.exe, ctfmon, and one svchost entry. At times, one of the two latter ones will jump as high as 98% usage. I tried disabling every startup program with Task Manager while disconnected from the net, deleted restore points, defragged, and the delay improved only slightly. In addition to AVG a/v, Spybot, and Adaware I have run CCleaner and the full version of Registry Mechanic with no improvement. I have gone down the HijackThis list using the cheat sheet in this forum and deleted a couple of suspicious items, that didn't help either. On the attached startup list, I have no clue what the fourth item with no command listed might be. I have recently added an external hard drive for storage and backup and a new monitor, fwiw, but the problem seems to have started at some point after that. The web sites in the HJT log are all legitimate.

I have tried literally everything I've found. I've even check registry keys but just cannot find what causes me to be unable to right click anything in the start menu. I can right click everything else, this is the only problem. And I've also checked the enable dragging and dropping.

I used to have a way on Win 98 to uncheck things that I didn't want to have on my computer when it boots up. I now have Win XP and can't figure out how to get to the list where I can uncheck things. I activated the Windows Messenger and I'd like to stop having constantly in my face. I'm sorry I activated it in the first place. I don't want to completely remove it, but would like it to stop working for now. Can someone give me specific steps to get to the "start up" list?

Big Big problems on my system today. I believe (although its been denied) that a program was installed and uninstalled incorrectly on my system (by my teenage son). Besides having missing files and programs that won't start up, I am missing my start bar..the whole bar..at the bottom of the desktop/screen. Also, when I click on, say, IE to open up, it looks like it opens up then disappears. When I do a control-alt-delete, it looks like IE is up and running. Any ideas on how I can get my start bar back and programs to stop running "in the background"? I am running Win XP. Also I am unable to log on to Outlook to retrieve email.

My computer (H.P. Pavilion ze 4900 laptop) is running ver-r-r-ry slow.I have: Defragged, Cleaned up my cookies, Uninstalled unneeded programs, Restored the system to a date prior to the occurrence of the slow running speed,Restarted the computer.I have not: Done a disc clean-up (because I have been given conflicting counsel [re: the safety of doing a disc clean-up] by folks who know more about computers than I do.)
Shut down programs running in the back ground(Although I have lots of programs running in the back ground,I have not shut any of those things down because 1)I dont know how to discriminate between what should and what should not be shut down and 2)I dont how to shut those programs down.)Done a virus sweep or a spy-ware sweep (because those operations take a long time even when the computer is running at normal speed

I recently attempted to install a program that installed Microsoft .Net Framework 1.1. The installation of the original program didn't complete so I uninstalled .Net. Now, when I turn on my computer the log on screen doesn't appear - it just goes directly to the desktop. This isn't a problem because I only have one user account, but I just wanted to see if my ininstalling .net had something to do with this, or if not, what else could have caused this to happen spontaneously? (I don't like it when my computer starts doing things I didn't tell it to do

dmp files or eventlogs to help me figure out why my laptop keeps crashing. it is a 1 year old Toshiba running XP media center. It seems to run ok is safemode so I think it is software related. I have not reinstalled windows yet and prefer not to. Windows was reinstalled about 4 months ago. Also when I try to log into this site I get a message saying the admin must white list me but it then lets me post anyway.

computer (WinXP SP2 - 1GB RAM) just started in the last day or two to load really slow -- it takes a good half hour or more to get to the point where you can click on an icon and it takes a few minutes to open. Don't even ask about the internet. it did not download anything in the last few days and has no idea why this is happening.

My problems are a very long boot up (go away and make a coffee length) and also slow running, especially in opening progs for the first time ie, very slow to open Word initially, then much faster opening subsequent Word files. Even so, the laptop has slowed considerably and is often hesitant.

Lately I have been experiencing a temporary slowdown/freeze and I notice that the hd light is blinking. I can be moving the mouse across the page, for example, when it will start responding erratically or stop. As this is happening the hd light blinks even though nothing is being saved or opened. I have disabled indexing, run virus checks and adware and spyware removal tools. I do have a wireless router attached but i haven't checked to see if it happens with my laptop also.

Out of the blue, my computer started getting slow. Sometimes its ok, and then it will be on the verge of freezing.. then get itself back together. I realized, when I start up, it takes FOREVER. It also shows this screen I have never seen before. Its completely black, and has a line of grey rectangles from side to side. and slowly loads across. When it is finally finished 10-15 minutes it will slowly start up in regular fashion

When turning on, it takes 5 to 10 minutes to settle down. Once it stops grinding and I try to start any application -- such as Internet Exployer, it takes another 5 to 10 minutes. I have Nortons 360 and another anti-virus application that gives me the indication that all is O.K. How can I speed this machine up

I've gone through a lot of the threads in here and tried a lot of fixes, and I'm still having problems.
I have a Gateway, Windows XP laptop that's about 1 year old. A little over a week ago, it started "running slow". It's slow to start up (takes about 5-10 min), the mouse "sticks" sometimes although that is an intermittent problem, when I have multiple applications minimized (outlook express, firefox, My Documents, AIM), it's slow to toggle between them, and it's slow to open folders in My Documents.

My desktop has been slowing down over time. Start up you could almost make a cup of tea between on button and being usable. Performance picks up, but not what it used to be.Could someone advise me if a problem lies in this area and what to add/remove. Also there are 3 other user accounts, do I have to run seperate logs for these, or will changes I make carry over (ps. I am administrator).
