I have two different identities in Window XP home. Something happened and the system crashed and my husband's identity was lost. It still appears on the log in page, but his settings, desktop, bookmarks, e-mail are lost.

It is a Dell Inspiron 1000 Laptop Running Windows XP Home/newbie so pls be patient..Anyway, the Dell got infected with the NSIS Media Trojan & I tried everything to remove it including but not limited to Webroot spy sweeper. It would quarantine it but apparently this thing regenerates in the registry. Therefore, I decided I needed to really secure my system & so since I am the only user, I deleted the non-admin logon account & set up the admin account with a password. I wrote it down but have lost the paper which I had written the password on. The hint is not helping me remember it exactly so I'm locked out.
View 3 Replies View Relatedtonight i was playing a game and for some unknown reason it unexpectedly quit, i was a bit annoyed so i switched off the computer without shutting it down properly. but when i switched it back on a few hours later it started up normally, but then when i logged onto my username (out of 4) it started up to the default settings for a user, for example background changed to acer one, start menu favourites lost and internet explorer settings lost (eg. favourites, icons). And to make things worse, i found out later that when i went into my documents from the start menu, all of my files were not there. but after further exploration, all my files were still there but were in my folder in the documents and settings folder. but it must have started up my username from a TEMP folder in the Documents and Setting folder. Also when i log into any of the other 3 user names, all the settings are how they are supposed to be and nothing is different. please help!!! sorry if this was too longer message but i couldn't condense it any more!

As I logged back on I click on User icon and the screen turns blue and never progresses any further. When I use ALT-CTRL=DELETE, it shows task manager running and continues to cycle in Kbs used. Can I restart and use set up F-1 to correct.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWindows 2000 usually displays the username and password when i want to log on, and i just click OK and go to the desktop. However, upon turning it on today nothing appears, i press enter and it says to enter a username and password, Cancel is greyed out and there is no 'X' button.
I can't for the life of me find the username and/or password and have no rememberance as to the username or password in my head (never needed to remember it).
Is there anyway i can get round it? BIOS changes? password hackers? I really am looking for anything that might work
when I booted my XP Pro system, my user profile admin) was corrupt and all my user settings were lost.Then I found that my documents were gone too.The files do not appear anywhere on my hard drive. no docs & settings folder has them. btw, no viruses found on my pc.When I use a undelete file utility, I can see the files at cdocuments & settings/temp, but windows explorer does not see this folder. View 4 Replies View RelatedI have XP pro and have been trying to change the name of the name in Outlook Express from MAIN IDENTITY to Len and I have ended up with 2 names and Main ID and Len will not delete and if I ask it to start in Main ID I get this message, THE CURRENT IDENTITY COULD NOT BE CHANGED BECAUSE ONE OF THE APPLICATIONS WAS UNABLE TO SWITCH. CLOSE ANY DIALOGUE BOXES IN OTHER APPLICATIONS BEFORE TRYING AGAIN. I have nothing else open how to get back to main and get rid of Len.

It has been running slow and freezing up some, today while trying to run spyware, it is slower than molasses, over 7 hours and still not done. In addition, I can not open any internet windows or access it at all from my user id , and yes I am over loaded with programs and photos on my poor harddrive. So after restarting it about 30 times, I try my son's identity and I can access the internet, last night IE was almost impossible, but firefox was better. I did download a file from photobucket, which I did not install and then I uninstalled it. I also have uninstalled and reinstalled yahoo messenger a couple times, thinking that was freezing it up, I added the google toolbar just recently and the ym, seems to conflict anytime I download a new program, so as of now It is uninstalled.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI was putting some mp3s from a folder onto iTunes. iTunes decided to be rude and delete some of the data, so I went back and fixed it... then, I clicked over to F:/, and lo and behold, suddenly it thought it was a music folder, and had even taken on the details view of the music folder I was just in! My Documents also thinks it's a music folder now,
My hard drive was all messed up anyway, so I thought that was just what caused it. It had also put some of my album images on random system folders, the hard drive's been replaced now, and it's happened again.
Dell with Windows XP Professional on it and 160 GB hard drive. When I got the computer home I went right into the Administrator Identity and began to use the computer. I was thrilled with it, so much harddrive and 512 MB Ram. After I had put a lot of my data on the computer I thought I might try another identity for other uses. So I went in to create a new identity. When I had finished with the new Identity the original Administration Identity that I had been working with for months no longer existed. After much consternation I did a system restore and got my original identity back. But what I want to know is how can I create a new identity without losing everything in the original Identity and I realize I should have gone on through Administrator to create the first identity. View 6 Replies View RelatedI just closed a game i was playing using task manager because it froze, when i got a ballon notification saying my secondary drive was low on available space, when i opned up my computer to check it out the hard drive lable was " " the system was FAT, the total capacity was 7gb and the available space was 9mb; instead of being labled "Tv&movies" with NTFS as the file system and it's a 200gb hard drive that at last check had 14gb free, i whent to open it up and my computer just shut off so i gave it 10 mins and turned it back on only to get this wierd yellow check disk screen as apposed to the normal blue one. then my computer whent into a serious of restarts, when i switched it off removed my seconed HDD and restarted it, it works fine now and i can see the files on my 2nd hdd using a external usb device. and as long as i don't click that stupid ballon notification thingy that runs the auto drive cleaner my computer doesn't shut itself off.

Importing everything into the new install of Firefox was a piece of cake. Everything, even the last sites I had open, imported without any issues. Outlook Express is proving more ... annoying. Microsoft's support site explains how to create new profiles, switch between those new profiles... none of which I need to do. I need to import my old Identity, from my data drive, into Outlook Express 6. I don't mean import the messages (there's not even room for them on the new partition), I just need to link the existing identity on the data drive to the new XP / Outlook Express installation.

I deleted the old one, and a window popped up that gave me the option to save all of that user's files to a desktop folder (named after the deleted user account) on the new user account' Desktop, so I chose that option. The file never appeared and now I can't find any of the files!! I've searched for specific file names and I haven't come up with anything.

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy wallpaper has disappeared even though it appears under display properities-themes. Under the desktop tab my wallpaper is set correctly. When I try to change the theme from modified theme to windows classic the change is not accepted. My screensaver was the picture slideshow and is now windows xp moves across the screen as the screensaver. When I try to change it back the change is not accepted.
This all started because I am trying to back up my computer to an external hard drive and keep getting error message "windows delay write failed". I tried updating the hard disk driver but there wasn't any update. While searching for fixes for that problem, I came across Panda Software online virus checker. I used it and it deleted a few viruses. They were all old, some may have only been unopened email attachments and they were all from 2001 and 2002. Two days later, I was using logmein - remote access and while rebooting (not the first reboot) I got the blue screen. Here's the error message.

So I looked up vsdatant.sys which is located in system32 directory, and I changed the name of the driver to vsdatant.old but then my zonealarm stopped working so I changed it back.
How do I get my display working properly? Any ideas on the "write failed" error message?
I have burned some photos onto a CD -R and have gone back into the cd drive but they are missing!! where have they gone. The photos were definitely burned on. I thought that once on a cd nothing could be lost.

Once it gets to the user screen for user selection both keyboard and mouse stop working, its either they stop working or the computer freezes, i am not sure. Life still goes to the mouse as it still lights. The keyboad works fine in the bios but not at freezing point.
