View 14 RepliesHow do you determine what the items are that are listed in the Sys Config Utility (msconfig.exe), startup tab? My system has a few listed that only have a registry entry listed in the Location column--the other two columns are blank. I'd like to know what they are.

If I select normal startup the items are back checked. There are several items in my startup that I don't want started. How do I accomplish this ?

What happened to them? How do I get my working startup items bacK? I recently installed Process Explorer, a program which I found of no use to me. I have uninstalled it, and still the problem persists.
When I go to "start" "run" and type in "msconfig" I get an error message that says the file can't be found. Any idea on where to find it?

I have not heard strange sounds from my hard drive, previous to , and subsiquent to the problem. I wish to run chkdsk,to see if this can resolve the problem, if the OEM version will allow it. View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a dual boot system (2 hard drives) booting Suse and XP and boot up through Suse's built in boot manager which gives me the option of booting to Windows or Linux. But since I barely ever use Linux I want to delete it off the 2nd drive so I can use it for a storage drive, so I'm wondering how to replace the Windows Master Boot Record so I can just boot into my XP drive. I'm scared that once I delete/reformat the contents of the 2nd hard drive (I'll probably use Partition Magic to do this through my XP drive) that I won't be able to boot XP up anymore. So before I do anything I want to just be able to boot into XP and bypass the linux drive before I delete it to make sure everything is ok.

View 4 Replies View RelatedDuring System startup, the system always halts at "Strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility". The only way I can manage to boot to Windows is by selecting "Boot to utility partition" from the Boot Device Menu or if there is a Windows XP installation CD in the cd-rom drive. When I boot this way, everything works fine .This behavior started when I performed a fresh install of XP Professional (XP Home came with the system). The problem did not start immediately after the installation; I was able to install some drivers and reboot a couple times (maybe twice) before it happened. When I installed the display driver (from Dell) and rebooted, it went to the "Strike F1. " screen. I have since tried another fresh installation of XP Home (the original OS) and the problem is still occuring. This time it occurs immediately after the installation; No drivers have been installed at this point.

View 14 Replies View RelatedIn my WinXPSP2 In msconfig, I have several items ticked and several items unticked. These unticked items don't load at startup, but I'm guessing the system still spends time checking that they DON'T need to be loaded. The system takes long time to start up. (Dont need to check hijack this & viruses, we've been through all of that on here already).
Nomally, in the Windows Current Version registry key there is an entry "Run" for those items ticked to start up and a key "Run -" where the non-starting up items are listed. However I don't have the Run - key, therefore I can't delete these items.
I suspect that previously when there were some items I wished to delete, I might have deleted the whole key rather than the individual items in it.
I thought this key would automatically be regenerated - but obviously not.
Can anyone help me - I'm not sure whether it's Run- or Run - with a space - and should it be in the local machine set, the local user set or both? Do I just type it back in & will these unticked items then appear in it? Or would only newly unticked items appear in it? How else can I delete these items that are unticked in msconfig which I wish to remove?
When I right-click, and choose "Remove from this list", nothing happens.

I'm wanting to write a macro that will run when I start my computer or shutdown my computer. Here's the deal, I use netzero as my ISP. Netzero is constantly downloading ads that show up when I go to log on. Now the ads are using audio which is even more annoying. Anyway, I found out where the files are kept and I know the names. I'd like to write a file that auto exe's when I turn on or off the computer. It would also be nice to have a function key that would operate the auto delete. Any ideas on how to make this work?

View 2 Replies View RelatedHave Win2K/IE6...how do I delete unwanted menu items from the Right Click "Save Image As" menu? The number of items causes the menu box to be either top justified or bottom justified, depending on where the cursor is located when the right click button is used. I am therefore having to move the cursor all over the screen to chase the desired "save Image" command. Also, with IE6, several menu items have been added (over IE5)....but, I am NEVER going to "email picture", "print picture", nor "go to my pictures" from this menu box. I could delete 7 of these pesky items, if I knew how, thus making this a much more user friendly menu box.
