So, my computer has been screwed up for quite some time now, and I thought I might remedy the situation by doing a repair install of windows XP. I managed to get my hands on a slipstreamed SP3 CD today, and let windows do its thing. However, when the time came to enter in my XP key, I could not use my keyboard, which is the same problem i had before i repaired windows.
View 14 RepliesI move to another screen/application and then back, say to Outlook, the first key I strike is not what its supposed to be, but the second key and what follows is correct. It just seems to be the very first key I hit generates a random character. This issue doesn't just happen in Outlook either but other programs as well. I might have thought this was limited to my laptop since I use this 90% of the time, but my desktop also has this problem. I've run a deep scan using ZA Extreme Security and come up with no viruses.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI just finished assembling my new build. It boots and I can get to the BIOS. I even have it booting from the DVD drive so I can load Win XP.However, when I get to the Windows Setup and it asks me if I want to setup windows(press enter), Repair(some other key), quit(F3) my keyboard won't work. I hit "Enter" because I want to install XP and nothing happens. It is not responding to my keyboard strokes.
This is strange because the keyboard works in the BIOS.
I was clearing out some old files and I have accidently run (from within XP) a BIOS flash utility for my old AOpen AX6BC mobo. MY current mobo is an MSI K8N Neo2. From what I can recall, the utility perfoms the BIOS flash the next time that the PC is rebooted. The file is called ax6bc110.exe. I have tried to delete the file both from Windows and from a Dos box, but I am being told that the file is in use. I have looked in Task Manager but I cannot find an entry that relates to this file.

Can it be run from the command prompt while Win is running? My MBoard is a SOYO SY-K7VMP2 and lately an automatic reboot began coming up occasionally in the middle of various scans (such as security checkups, registry cleanings, and defrags), in addition to a few long downloads. I'm almost guessing that this might be the result of something like an outdated driver or BIOS. Something even caused a type of defect in my RAM in which only 1 of the two 1GB chips (less than a year old) is detected and identified, and the system will only run while just one of the chips is in its slot.
View 21 Replies View Relatedit says there is no keyboard present and it won't boot up. I confirmed this.. it said keyboard error or no keyboard present. It was a USB keyboard. I tested that keyboard with this, our other computer, and it worked with this computer. I tried all 5 USB ports on Computer A, with no luck. The lights on the keyboard would not come on.
I went out and bought a keyboard with a PS/2 plug. The lights on this keyboard do light up. Now, the computer comes to the screen where it asks me to choose between Safe Mode and starting Windows normally, but it won't let me choose, or even press Enter. If I wait until it defaults to "Start Windows normally," it attempts to boot Windows but I get a blue screen saying that the BIOS is not fully ACPI compliant.
my ps2 and usb keyboard wont work in the bios. the pins are fine, the computers brand new, its plugged in all the way. ive already tried to clear cmos, but it still doesnt work

View 2 Replies View Relatedonce the on button was pushed, it came up with the BIOS screen asking for the password.I removed the CMOS battery, which allowed me to change the Password so I can get onto BIOS now. However, when I boot now it just comes up with the BIOS screen.I set HD to boot first, aswell as setting the clock and date. I then ask it to save and quit, after which it shut's down, and reboots, only, BIOS keeps coming up. And I need to get this sorted asap

I was away from home for about a week and left the machine plugged into the mains but powered down. When I returned home to boot up, it kept doing things like constantly hanging on parts of the bios POST screen, eventually booting up after thirty or so complete restarts. It finally booted into windows but after the last shutting down, it will now not boot up at all. I have replaced the bios battery and reset the bios several times.

View 1 Replies View RelatedGot a bit of a problem with my housemates pc.A friend gave him some extra RAM, i checked it out and it was crucial 512mb pc2100 CL2.5, and although it didn't match his exsisting RAM it seemed to me that his mobo would only run the FSB at 200mhz anyway so i went ahead and fitted it.It worked fine I then noticed his system temp was running a little high (60-65 degrees), so i took his heatsink off and cleaned the dust and refitted it with some new thermal compound.I added too much and the temp went up. To nearly 90 degrees.I shut it dwon as i didn't want the cpu to pop, cleaned it off, reapplied less compound and figured this would work fine.Now we have the problem. Most of the time: Power on and nothing happens. No bios, no beeps. Occasionally: Power on, i jump into the bios, the temp looks fine (30-40 degrees) and then it freezes right there in the bios after about 30 seconds to a minute.This sounds like a heat issue, but the last temp reading before freeze is 33 degrees.?I've double and triple checked that the heatsink is on properly and thats fine. I followed the official guide on how much compound to use (a blob the size of an uncooked short grain of rice).

I contacted the maker of my motherboard and they say an upgrade is available and sent it to me for { DON'T CRACKUP} $49.00. The bios utility setup is not getting opened through access ibm button . I have a friends PC, a gateway P4 2.6, winxp home. The mouse and keyboard up and died. He had a kvm switch, the electronic kind when it stopped functioning. I have tried usb, ps2 everything. The keyboard works on bootup, so I can get into bios etc... but when it gets to the windows screen, nothing. No mouse or keyboard. Safe mode is the same thing. Dont want to format and reinstall windows. On that note, I did try a repair, when it asks for admin password it wont accept it. Says invalid admin password.. View 6 Replies View RelatedXP has now installed - and I want to now allocate a partition to the remaining space. I've read that you can give each drive 4 partitions. When I have the below sorted - I will be adding another 320GB drive as a slave.
(all ATA drives - not SATA) I have 5 questions;
1) Can you have 4 partitions - i.e. C: D: E: F: ?
2) Do you think from the info below, that XP is displaying the FULL space on the drive.
3) I'm confused why the whole of the Unallocated space is not shown because 27.99 GB is shown as Free space (of which I did not set up)
4) I seem to be missing 21.91 GB (see below)
5) If I can have 4 partitions on Disk 0 - can I then have 2 partitions on the slave drive - drive 1 (I'm guessing it would be number 1)...........
I just noticed, that since the last 3 weeks my taskbar clock is always out by one hour. I reset it and shortly it jumps back to the incorrect time: I let Windows synchronize it, again it jumps back 1 hour. Doublechecked Time Zones and it is correct.We are still on daytime Savingstime until this weekend so that cannot be it.(I did unclick -autoadjust to daylight saving) makes no difference.Can anyone help? I "seem" to be burning a new CD after installing a blank 52xmulti speed disc. My troubles begin after about 91% of the burning process is completed. The process will stop and inform me that the "write-speed" is incorrect! How does one go about changing to the correct speed? What is the proper sequence in CD burning so that I do it the same way every time?

What I do: I select 2 or more files in the explorer by holding the CTRL or shift key. These files are all from the same type. Then do a right mouse click and select "Open With" What I get: I get at first for the first selected file a folder selection window with the headline MOVE. I cancel this action, then I get a 2nd folder selection window now with the headline COPY. I cancel this window again. Then I get the Program Selection Window I expect. I select for example Paint Shop Pro. Any other program has the same outcome. The program will start like expected. But now I must handle this procedure for any file I have previous selected inside the explorer. And the program will start again and
again.
i just installed a 512 meg stick of memory in my laptop that should have given me 768 meg but in "my computer" it only shows i have 736 megs of memory. is this normal? it is a toshiba satellite with windows xp.
