Terminal Server Not Working After Upgrading From Home To Pro
Jan 29, 2008
I did a upgrade overwrite of XP Home to XP Pro on this workstation of mine with the sole purpose of getting Terminal Services to work. I have the service enabled, there are users in the Remote Desktop Users group, the XP firewall is disabled, the computer is set up in a workgroup, and file/printer sharing works. If I try to connect to term serv from another computer, it will immediately fail and simply say "The remote computer has ended the connection" There are no entries in the computer's error log nor have I found any other indication to the problem.

I'm looking at setting up windows 2003 terminal servers all over the place to replace the awful thing people are currently doing here - vncing servers with one small shared password among everyone <holding my hands over my ears for the backlash>. Don't blame me, it's another awful legacy I have to get rid of...
1. I've got to set up a Terminal Server Licensing server and was thinking about putting this on my second domain controller. I was wondering what would happen in this server dies, though. Is there some way of having resilience in this scenario? Perhaps a second Licensing server or something, the way you have 2 or more Domain Controllers?

I have a small home LAN setup (2 PC's - 1 Windows XP Home and 1 Windows 98SE) and I want to be able to use a terminal server like solution so that I can run everything on the XP machine but be on the 98 machine.I've explored solutions like VNC which work well except I need to be able to log into a SEPERATE user account while someone else is currently logged into theirs on the XP machine. For example, my XP machine has two accounts: anthony and charlene. Let's say charlene is currently physically at the xp machine and logged into her account. How can I, from the 98 machine, connect to the Xp machine and log into my account?

I got a new mobo, and I didn't think about my Dell oem XP not working because of it. I really think its stupid to buy software I already use and own. Is it possible to use just an upgrade xp version to make my oem full? Ive also heard that you can contact MS and request they replace your oem restore CD with the actual install CD, and that they will actually do it. Anyone have any thoughts or experience about this? Ive been combing forums and Dell support and MS support for hours but I can't seem to find any more info about this. I really hope it doesn't end up I have to pay over $100 just to buy software Ive been using for the past 4 or 5 years....

Anyway, when upgrading from Windows XP Home Edition to Windows XP Pro earliler this week, everything seemed to work fine and all the program icons I had from Windows XP Home appeared on the XP Pro desktop. However, my Internet Broadband/Dial-Up connection dissapeared from 'Network Connections' and I therefore could not connect to the internet, even though the ISP ('BT Broadband' - I'm based in the UK in case you wonder who BT are) icon remained on my desktop and their software appeared in Programs.
When I contacted my ISP they claimed this is a problem with Windows XP upgrade to Pro and I should contact Microsoft Support. Is this true?
Anyway, I've had to resort to doing a clean install of Windows XP Home again now in order to get back on the internet with my Broadband internet and installing my ISP's USM Modem software all over again. It worked, but still want to upgrade to XP Pro.
Any ideas on how this 'problem' can be resovled. Don't want to have to do a clean install again and again. Also, is It this a common problem with upgrading to Windows XP Pro from Windows XP Home as my ISP claim ?

my new computer to XP Professional with that same software.Just load and go? I know I do need to set a restore point, since there's not one yet.

I currently have XP Home, 5.1 build 2600 according to dxdiag. I also have an XP Profesional CD, however the compatibility test on that CD says "Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD". So it seems I can't upgrade with the disc I have.I want XP Pro because I have 8GB of RAM, and I don't like Vista. Also I want to upgrade rather than fresh install so I can keep all the programs etc. I currently have. What are my options on upgrading to a 64 bit version of XP Pro? What do I need to buy?

I am using XP Home as a "server" to just host some files for everyone to access. We do not have enough in the budget right now to upgrade to XP Pro or 2003 and I was wondering if anyone had a fix for this. When I am on a client machine and try to access the "server" it will prompt for the Guest password. I type in the Guest password I assigned and it shows me all the shared folders. The only thing is that it doesn't prompt for the password on all machines. EX: Client1 prompts for pass, but Client2 doesn't. I have all the windows firewalls turned off.

The procedure is as follows:
Right-click databases -> Restore Database
I mark 'from device', click the '...' button & select 'File' in the dropdown, then brows to the file itself. Under 'select the backup sets to restore' I check the only checkbox there, then in the 'To Database' I select the name of the database in the file (a new DB name appears there as you select the file).

My internet on XP Home stopped working today after (or during) installing the latest beta drivers that are recommended to play bioshock with. I did that and then rebooted and it came up with lots of 'found new hardware' wizards but I couldn't install any because I then found out I couldn't access the internet (im on broadband). when I go into firefox or explorer and go to a website it straight away says it can't connect to the server. But when i go into ubuntu which i dual boot the internet works fine!Ive tried a lot of things including reinstalling xp but it still doesnt work.

XP Pro SP2, all latest updates. When I reboot, I can correctly sync to a time server, but after an unknown amount of time it goes back to saying "The RPC server is unavailable" instantly after clicking Update Now, regardless of what server I tell it to sync to. I also noticed that if I view my nForce Networking Controller status, then click Properties and go to the Authentication tab, everything is greyed out. If I hit OK without changing anything (I can't change it even if I wanted to), a message pops up saying "An unexpected condition occured. Not all of your requested changes in settings could be made" and just goes back to that window. I have to hit cancel to close it

My work recently got new computers, so there were kind enough to let us take our old Dells home since they were like three years old. There was a ton of work stuff on this computer, so I decided to format the hard drive and start fresh. Everything was going great until I got to the place in the install where I have to enter the serial number for Windows 2000. I tried my home copy and it would not work. I tried a few other valid key codes and they still do not work.

I really don't understand much about dot-net; but, I am up against a real problem running a certain program that is currently using dot-net 1.1. I won't mention the program by name as I don't want to side-track the thread into troubleshooting a particular Windows App.
Tech support said that an error message we were getting indicated a dot-net problem. He suggested his program should run on dot-net 1.1, 2.2 or 3.5. He further suggested to try uninstalling and reinstalling 1.1, which I did to no avail. Problem is when I try to install 2.2 or 3.5, I get an error message saying there is no qualifying product on my system for the "upgrade".
So, how do I get 2.2 or 3.5 to install. I've read a dozen ambiguous and unclear web pages and tried downloading and installing four of what I thought was the dot-net installer.
Windows XP SP3 and all available updates. This is a freshly formatted and installed system that has not been on the 'net except for updates running on an older Dell socket 478 with Celeron 2.8-GHz processor and 512 RAM.

Are there any important things I should know before getting my new Windows XP computer, especially security- or virus-wise? It seems that every new virus is made for XP, and that XP gets the lion's share of the security holes, so I'm a little daunted by moving up from my old Windows 98 computer, but otherwise excited about getting a great new computer for a good deal.
