View 2 Replies View RelatedMy icons on my desktop stay permanantly highlighted for some reason. I ran spybot, NAV, Adware, and Pest Patrol and cleaned up a few spyware and adware programs, but nothing seems to help out the icon situation. Here is a picture if you want to see what it looks like- http://pspdownloadguide.com/images/myscreen.gif
View 14 Replies View RelatedI've deleted an icon for a folder on my Windows XP Professional desktop at least 10 times, probably more over the last year. It re-appears at random and is empty. I tried deleting it from Command, but it said the folder didn't exist, however "dir" said it did. I'm really lost here as to how to make this icon go away.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if there was a way to permanently ensure you never see the balloon that tells you that there are "unused icons on your desktop". I'm assuming it's some sort of registry hack.
View 2 Replies View RelatedA friend has a Compaq laptop running Windows XP. When you power up the system, the Windows XP logo screen comes up and then the desktop background comes up but it stops there. You never get any desktop icons or taskbar so there is no way to navigate. If anyone has any suggestions on how to debug this it would be appreciated. Thanks.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have two computers, both running XP Home SP 1. On the desktop at home, I use a JPG image as my Desktop Background. On the laptop at school, I can't use a JPG. I have to use a BMP. The BMP file is about 7 times larger than the JPG file. Question: How do I tweak the laptop to let me use a JPG file as a Desktop background?
View 3 Replies View RelatedDesktop preview screen is blank, however, the image does display on the desktop. Background images with bitmap icon will display in preview, but not those with what appears to be a film icon. Some of the regular Windows images, i.e. Azul, Windows XP, etc. have the film icon, and do not display in preview.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am having difficulty changing my desktop wallpaper. No matter what I do, I cannot put a different picture or wallpaper on the desktop. I have already tried using the right click on the desktop and going into the properties that way. It won't even let me select any of the options for the wallpaper. And I used to be able to go to my photo files and just pick one, right click on it and select the "set as desktop background" option. But now it won't let me change it at all.

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I login into Windows XP pro following a normal boot up, within a couple of seconds the top half of my screen cannot be accessed my desktop shrinks about half way down the screen. If I load an application it only opens /maximises in that portion of the screen. However, the actual desktop background remains unchanged!
It very weird because if I login under a different user this does not happen. It seems that my screen is acting as virtual screen?I have checked the settings and nothing seems different.
Because item removed by owner. Each time I try to put a new display background - It deletes it and does the same message as a background. Is this a virus?
View 2 Replies View RelatedOne of the best features of Win XP is to use any image from any image folder as your desktop background, wallpaper. For some reason this feature has stopped working and of course I have no idea why. I haven't changed any folder options or made any changes for that matter.
View 2 Replies View Relatedi was working on a computer the other day helping someone "clean it up" and make it run faster. i did all the normal "clean up" stuff, got her back online, pc running much faster, everyone's happy.except for one thing: one of her original complaints was that her desktop background had recently reverted to all RED with this image in the middle that looks something like a biohazard logo. i tried changing the desktop background via the control panel, and it changed momentarily and then reverted back only moments later. I ran avg anti-virus and spybot to sweep her machine of any bugs/viruses (and found quite a few). when i left the red desktop was gone.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI struggle to explain this one. This is a duplicate setup - i have two systems very nearly identical, both HP DC7600's, full-up 4GB RAM, 160GB HD, fairly fresh Windows XP Professional SP3, typical applications: MS Office, Picasa, iTunes, Realplayer, Google Chrome browser, blah blah. Nothing exotic. One of them, after being left with a half dozen tabs open in Chrome, and not much else going on other than AVAST Antivirus running in background, upon checking back in with the Screen Saver "On" [starfield], no password needed, the screen/display freezes on the background image, and nothing else pops up on screen except the mouse cursor.

View 10 Replies View RelatedIt seems that I am the likely victim of an exploit of some sort, but I have been unable to find any information on it.The hardware is an IBM desktop, running Windows 2000.Somewhere along the line, I discovered that when I do a ctrl-alt-delete, the "background image" that appears has been replaced with a porn image. This is also the same background that appears during the Windows start and shutdown sequence, before/after the desktop appears.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI know is this going to sound very "lame", but here goes. My wife like the desktop theme for the seascape, it has the ships wheel when working and for the mouse is a sea shell. Very nice. But, the background is a light tan colored and I hate it, I would like the plain white background. Is there a way to keep the sea theme and still get a white background?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI know this is simple but it's driving me nuts that I cannot fix it. The Help desk just updated my computer and now there are boxes surrounding the names of the desktop icons. I do not want these boxes.
