View 3 RepliesI have been running an AMD 64 bit processor now for some time, but it really never occured to me to look into running a 64 bit operating system. That is, until yesterday.
My friend works for Convergys, a Microsoft call center and sent me a free copy of Windows XP Pro x64. I immediately put this thing on my hard drive and was totally impressed with the speed and stability etc, but then I looked into some of the downsides of running a x64 bit and it made me wonder if it was worth it. (I put my Windows XP Pro x32 back on in the meantime)
First of all, I just want to make sure I understand all of this, before I do commit. And, by the way, I don't want Vista x64!...Anyway, as far as I can understand so far, the x64 will run x32 bit applications, but does that mean every single x32 bit application I ever used will run on it. Will a defrag utility, Winamp, Acoustica CD and Label Maker, things of that sort run?
I cannot get a Hallmark Connections Card Studio program to install on my Win XP Pro computer. I keep receiving and "Application Error" pop-up that says: "CSTUDIO caused a General Protection Fault in module CSTUDIO. EXE at 0006.1176.Choose close. CSTUDIO will close." Then the installation process closes completely. Initially, I thought that it was just too old, as it is a Win 3.1 - 16 bit - program. However, it was successfully installed on another computer connected to my home network, which is also running Win XP Pro. My question, What could be blocking the installation on one computer but not the other?

View 11 Replies View RelatedSeveral months ago I upgraded my notebook PC to Win XP Pro SP2 and everything has been working very well. A few days ago however all of a sudden a lot of my applns (eg Internet Explorer) have become very hit and miss. Sometimes they work (for a while) after a boot but often they hang when I try and run them. When a program hangs I get an application not responding and when I shut down the program the PC pretty much just sits there - ie. I can see the Desktop and icons etc but nothing works, not even Start. If I try Ctl-Alt-Del the PC freezes with a blank (no icons) desktop screen and all I can do is power done the unit.
I'm running up to date Norton AV, Win firewall, Spy Sweeper - and I have scanned with Spybot S&D and Adaware and hijackthis. I have done on-line virus scans (trend micro, ewido, nai) until I'm blue in the face. A few medium risk files were found but nothing has helped fix the problem. Surprisingly, if I boot into Safe Mode IE etc seems to be working perfectly so it must be something (driver?) that is loading and conflicting in normal mode. BTW - when I try to run sfc /scannow in normal mode the program closes by it self half way through the scan. If I try to run sfc /scannow in safe mode I get a rpc server (whatever that is) is unavailable. Sure don't want to have to reload Win XP and all my applns and I'm hoping that if everything essentially works OK in safe mode, then I can fix whatever is screwing up in normal mode.
Xp sp2. WHen my system slows, I check TaskMgr. The main thing i notice, is that there are 6 or 7 seven tasks named svchost.exe. Is this normal? What does svchost.exe do?

I have an application which lets me use my mouse to move sub-applications (like a color palette) around the screen. I moved one such application off the screen up or down or left or somewhere and now I can't get it back. If I click the box which should make it appear, the box shows the application is there, but the application doesn't show up.Is there a way to retrueve such an application so it appears on the screen again?
View 6 Replies View RelatedThe offending program AcroRd32.exe (acrobat reader) hangs the logoff process if the user has a pdf open inside a webpage.Previously, I used a logoff script to "kill.exe" the AcroRd32.exe which would then allow the machine to finish the logoff process. In the recent past, a patch (not sure which one).. has changed the logoff process to start after all the users applications have closed.I was investigating using the "Auto Endtask" registry options to killthe application, but this does not seem to function.

View 4 Replies View RelatedThis is my first post so I'm likely to appear stupid. I'm of average computer competence but love the things. Short story is this:I have an accounting program in which I have data files for each year of my business. These have been successfully backed up for years on CD and now JumpDrive, and stored on the desktop with a shortcut for easy access.I downloaded and installed SP2. Now when trying to open a file, I get the message C:XXXXXXXXX is not a valid Win32 application. It always was before so what changed?I cannot back up my current files because that is the name I've always used. The computer doesn't recognize the name as valid so I have no security. An ancillary problem is that years ago, my adorable husband somehow associated my old data file to be opened with MusicMatch. (We don't even discuss this.) I managed a workaround so that I got the files to open with their program application even though I could never change the icon from MusciMatch. No harm no foul. No longer. Post SP2, the danged thing went back to opening MusicMatch, ignoring my old workaround. Messing with it for hours got it to where I'm now getting the invalid file messagel.
