Optimize System With 256 MB RAM
Mar 29, 2006what is the best recommendation for optimization of a system with Win XP Pro SP2 and 256 RAM? Should I use Diskkeeper, AceUtilities or something similar?

Cannot Optimize The System Properly

I did everything, but the one part where it says to turn up the inital and maximum page file size to 1.5x and 3x respectively of the amount of ram in your computer, i had a problem with. I have 1536MB Ram in my computer, and it will only go up to 4096 in the maximum thing. Does that mean i'm losting like 200-300 mbs of ram? What else is there to do?

Sep 29, 2007I've been trying to optimize my XP system to run as good as it possibly can, free from fragmentation, junk files, spyware etc. I've come up with a few programs that I want to ask people about. Spybot S&D 1.5 (the new one), Advanced Windows Care, CCleaner, and Glary Utilities. I have on my computer, only AWC because it can do almost all of what CCleaner does and it also has something similar to the "Immunize" function in Spybot and I heard it's bad to have more than one of those kinds of things happening at once. Could someone let me know how many of these programs I can or should be running? Are they all able to run fully (meaning that I'm able to immunize in Spybot and immunize in AWC and Glary for example) together, or are there some that I can't run if I am running others.

I was playing around the other day and found a new setting that allowed the computer to automaticly optimize my HD after i have been idle for a set amount of time. Nov 2, 2006I have used Bootvis in the past with no problems. Today I tried bootvis optimize and it told me to restart like normal, only this time right before windows would have the Login Screen pop up, the computer restarts. Safe mode works great, so I am thinking that Bootvis has some sort of sequence it wants to execute during bootup which is causing a problem. I am usually good at cleaning my computer but must have clicked the wrong thing for this to load.This issue is in Safe Mode. When I enter Safe Mode, I can not click anything. All icon pop up on the desktop but they are unclickable. From the task manager it shows no applications running but a few processes (all System processes). The only one I have it the recover cd, but it is my understanding that if I use the recovery cd that I will erase everything from my computer and I can not do this.I tried to read the other threads about the same problem, but to be honest I do not understand them and I just do not have the startup cd - maybe it is the same as the recovery cd?

Jul 17, 2005I have a 2 hard disc system, Windows XP pro and most programmes run from the C Drive. A few, plus all my data run from the F drive. Over the last few days I have encountered a massive slowdown in getting the computer started - form certainly less than 5 minutes to over 20 minutes. I have not added anything to the autoruns at all.
Programmes and data (eg music) run fine if they are on the F drive, but if they are on the C drive they run incredibly slowly so music is fragmented and at times its like trying to wade through treacle to get anything done. I have been getting crashes of the PC with a message about a kernel problem... but haven't yet copied all the data from that to get the detail. When it crashes the next boot reports a disc boot system failure, when i reboot ahgain it loads up but painfully slowly. The C drive was defraggged just afew weeks ago. I'm thinking the drive is about to pack up....
System Wont Load Operating System / Unable To Format Disks?
Aug 19, 2009I shut off the computer and turning it back on couldn't boot up windows. It gave the windows wasn't shut down properly and I tried the normal restart option and it would just give a black screen with a blinking _ and then nothing happens. Tried loading in safe mode but it gets to mup.sys then "Press Esc to cancel SPTD.sys" flashes below and whether I press Esc or let it be, nothing happens after that.
I tried popping in the windows xp disc that came with the laptop, boot from disc, it starts up but then after loading everything, it then says "Windows is starting up" the disc stops spinning then nothing happens. I tried popping in a windows vista disc and it says "Windows is loading files" with a progress bar, when it fills up, I get stuck with a blank black screen the disc stops spinning and then nothing happens.

May 26, 2008i rescently had to format the drive for a fresh copy. I have installed xp home retail version and realised i wanted to try something diferent. At system start the computer starts up prior to the windows boot screen and displays COMPAQ in big bright bold letters with option of F10 for system restore which is no longer on system (reformated) as well as other options for boot select pres ESC and F1 for setup.Can i remove this from my system? and then can i create a menu with 2 options 1 load windows normaly and 2 install a disk image stored on a hidden partition? maybe like the F10 key assighn that to access the imge and install it.
System Restore Wont Work: System Reboots Every Time?
Jun 8, 2006I am trying to use the system restore function on windows XP, but every time i select a restore point and the system reboots, it says that the restoration was incomplete and "no changes have been made." I have tried multiple restore points. Microsoft.com suggested that i verify that the task manager, WMI, and system restore services were running, and they are. I also tried disabling my antivirus program, but the same thing happens.

Apr 29, 2010Had problems with virus, couldnt update Virus or Malware Protection. I did full shred System Recovery from partition ( HP- A1130N -Windows Media Edition- Version 2002 Service Pack 2. Dowloaded AVG Virus and ran scan, all OK.Went to MS Dowload center and downloaded and installed 87updates to include IE8,started computer, all OK. Then updater said needed to download SVC Pack 3- took a loooooooooooooong time. THEN COMPUTER WOULDNT START- tried the two options it gave me but no go back to same black screen with boot options-- regualar- last working point- safe mode etc. no go.
At this point I did a full System Recovery again and downloaded virus protection again.

May 10, 2010I'm running a Dell XPS 600 with Windows XP Professional Media Center Edition. Well, OK, it's not really running.I used System Restore to return my PC to a point about six weeks ago when the system was more stable. The PC rebooted, and now it won't boot any more due to a missing/corrupt CONFIGSYSTEM file.It won't boot from either of my CD drives, either. I've used the boot Setup to alter the boot sequence but that doesn't help, the system just doesnt recognize those drives during boot. For this same reason, I've been unable to access the Recovery Console.
