Operating System 2000 Won't Boot
May 11, 2006
I have a problem in my office computer. It has two operating systems, namely, win98 and win2k in C: drive. The other partition is used for data storage and back up. Some days ago when I started that computer to work in win 2k it simply restarted again and again. So I am now unable to boot into 2000 and am forced to work in 98. Can someone tell me about the solution of the problem so that I can boot into 2000?

I"m running WinXP SP2 Home. Hardware is 2.0 Celeron, 1 gig Ram, 64MB Nvidia Video Card, PS/2 keyboard and mouse, HD's are 250GIG Western Digital with 4 partitions and 27% free on the XP Boot and 200GIG Western Digital with 2 Partitions. I have a Lite-On DVD +-R/RW drive and a 3.5 floppy. I am setup with a Duel-Boot configuration Win 98/XP. I do not have a paging file.
My problem occures after I hit enter for the Select Operating System page. I Hit enter, Win XP proceeds to load. After I hit enter and Windows loads the blue welcome screen 1 minute has passed. I hear the Welcome Audio music, however blue welcome screen is still there for 30 more seconds. Next is my picture that I have as my background that is shown without icons for 1minute 21seconds. Windows now displays my icons on my desktop. the icons blink at minute 4. after 4 minutes and 51 seconds I am able to use my computer. At bootup I only have 43 programs running and 357MB of the 1 gig ram taken.
What I have done:
1) I have started in safe mode and defraged my PC, 0% frag on all partitions except a drive that isn't currently plugged in and it was 1% because it's my backup drive (not worried about that 1%)
2)Removing all connected Componets and rebooted, same problem.
3) I have tried using msconfig.exe and setting the startup selection as Normal- it's defaulted to Selective. Tried reducing my startup programs. ....

A friend of mine needs win 2000 Pro boot discs. I don't think this is illegal as a microsoft site says if you have problems to make from a friends. He is the only person I know who has it. Need the discs to access his system. Probably infected. Cant get it to start, shutdown, nothing. Sometimes monitor says no signal. Sometimes works. Checked wires. Put in an old spare video adapter card, starts to work fine but freezes before I can do anything. I do not have a floppy drive so I need to be able to burn them to a CD.

I have an HP Pavilion ze4900 notebook computer that was just purchased on November 30th. From the get go it has been displaying the message "Operating System not Found" when I try to boot up. Sometimes I would have to turn it off and on several times for it to boot up, but sometimes that wouldn't work. Usually I would have to boot up from the Recovery CD.
Well anyway after dealing with the system BIOS settings (boot order and whatnot), and repairing the OS twice, I decided to contact HP support. They instructed me to delete the partition on the hard drive, format it, and re-install Windows XP. Okay did that and proceeded to lose everything that was pre-installed on the notebook including the wireless capabilities, the SOUND and video driver, the modem drivers, everything. And for some strange reason none of those drivers are on the recovery CD. So basically the thing is now a peice of dead weight.
Well, I decided that I would just make the best of it and see what I could do to get it reinstalled. Until this morning when I turned it on again, guess what happened? OPERATING SYSTEM NOT FOUND! So I lost everything that I loved and needed from the notebook for nothing because the @#$%! problem is still there!

I have an older Gateway system and my original operating system cd is lost. Do you have one or where can I find one. I feel this could really help me on finding out what is wrong with the computer. As of right now the computer will not boot up at all.

I recently reformatted my HD and re-installed XP home. Now when I boot up it asks me which operating system I want: either Windows XP Home or... Windows XP Home. Why is it showing the same OS twice? Can I get rid of one without having to re-format all over again? What might have I done wrong when installing the software?

I need to wipe clean the hard disc on a desktop. It currently has XP-Home installed, which was an upgrade from ME. The ME files were erased from the desktop after installation of XP. After formatting I assume I will need an MS-DOS bootup disc to install ME; install ME and then upgrade to XP-Home. If my assumptions are correct how can I create a bootup disc for ME? I am hoping that someone has a simpler method than I have outlined.

I have a Toshiba Laptop with Win XPPro. Won't boot-up to Windows. I first get a blue screen error message and then a black page with options: Safe Mode- Safe mode w/ Networking- Safe Mode w/ Command Prompt. None of these work; when I select one it just cycles back to this menu. I tried Win Logo Key /r but nothing. I can get into Set-Up. The computer was acting kind of fishy before it quit; the cursor would start moving left across the screen and I couldn't control it. I would shut-down and it would be ok, until it happened again. I did a Restore to try to repair it but the next time I turned on computer

On my desktop I had partitioned the main Hard Disk into 2 and had XP Pro on one half and Windows 7 on the other. When I used to boot up the PC the windows boot menu came up asking if I wanted to boot to XP or 7.Soon afetr this XP started crashing a lot. So I decided to scrap 7 and I've re-partitioned the Hard Disk into one big lump with only XP remaining. The partition that had 7 on it no longer exists. Why does my PC still start with the windows boot menu when I start it up?It still asks me if I want to boot to windows 7 or an earlier version of windows? Is there a way of stopping this?

Can someone please tell me if I can use a Windows XP Professional disk to repair a Windows XP Home Edition unmountable boot volume? My sister-in-law's Dell Dimension 8400 is getting that error when she starts the PC. She can't locate the disks that came with the PC and I only have an XP Pro disk. I repaired my laptop using recovery console about a year ago but that is XP Pro also.

I have 2 computers (well more than that but for this i have 2) One works and one doesn't. I took the hard drive out of the working one and put it in the non working one as the master. (BTW on the non working one its just the hard drive that is working properly) I put the hard drive from the non working one as the slave so i can try and get some files off of it and format it. So I boot up the system and the computer recognizes it but then i get an " Error Loading Operating System" error.

My computer tries to boot, it takes a while to detect anything from the CD-ROM (my first boot priority), and then when it detects the IDE, it says "error loading operating system" and after that I can't do anything but restart or shut down. I am running Windows XP Professional and it will load with a boot disk, but if I take out the boot disk it won't load.

Encountered a Blue Screen of Death error. The error stated that I should run Chkdsk and then proceeds to restart and bring me to the Windows boot selection screen (safe mode, last known good configuration, normally). No matter which choice I pick, it always leads to the BSOD then restarts. Since this is getting me nowhere fast, I want to just format and reinstall windows. I do not have my recovery CDs, and when I enter the BIOS to change the boot sequence I cannot change it so the CD drive is above the hard drive in priority. The reason it gives me in the bios is that "All items on this menu cannot be modified in user mode. If any items require changes, please consult your system supervisor. Any ideas on how I can boot off the cd and reinstall windows from scratch?

I have a Compaq Presario 5000 with 192M of RAM, 866MHz, and 40G HD. It had Windows Me loaded on it, and I tried installing W2K, but it didn't work. Here is the error message that I get: couldn't open drive multi(0) disk(0) rdisk(0) partition(1)
NTLDR: couldn't open drive multi(0) disk(0) rdisk(0) partition(1) As some of you suggested in other potings, I made sure that the boot from CD was the first option in BIOS. I tried installing Windows 98. NT4, 2000, and XP using bootable CDs and startup disks but didn't get anywhere. I booted in DOS and formatted the HD and used different partitions sizes and formatted them in FAT and NTFS, and I still got the same result. The cable is connected properly to the HD and there are no apparent damage/problem with anything inside. Linux works like a champ on it, but windows doesn't.

I had an istallation of win 2000 which i couldn't boot to.
It was freezing at the windows screen ( after the bios loading and the f8 option to choose ).
I tried to boot
1. from the emergency repair disk failed
2. from the original win 2000 Cd succeded but when reboot from the HD failed.
I also tried the repair option but wasnt able to boot from the HD.
At a point wasn't able to boot anymore neither from the win 2000 CD.
I decided to install win 2000 at the same HD without making a new partition and now i have win2000 at C:WINNT1 ( the new ) and C:WINNT ( the old )
The file systen is NTFS.
Now i can boot to the second installation.
Is there a way i could transfer or merge the old installation to the new one ?
My nightmare is to do all the programm installations from scratch ,configurate the varius programms and so on.
I'd like to repair the first installation of win 2000 and after that i can boot to it , delete the second one.

I recently had a computer guy install Win 2000 professional on a computer that had previously had win 98 which was really hosed bad. ( a clean install) Now, of all the luck it freezes after just a few minutes or perhaps 10 minutes sometimes. I mean it freezes, it will not respond to Ctrl Alt Del at all. Nothing will unfreeze it short of the reset switch. Weird huh?? The only thing I can think of that might have happened is I tried to do a Norton Live Update and it stopped and said that it did not complete, gave a long list of error messages of what did or did not happen and to contact tech support with the full body of message. I don't know if I am even registered with Norton all I know is that is says I have 365 or 364 days left on my license or whatever.

SystemRoot/System32/Drivers/asc3550f Erro status was oxc000012f Windows 2000 Professional system I recently purchased this computer system ($50) for my Mother who simply does e-mail and games (not on line games). I had to remove malware at first (can't remember the name) and had to install msconfig as 2000 did not have this feature. Now upon booting up, a window pops up with the above message, however upon clicking on the small x to close the window, then computer boots up and she uses it. Nothing else happens. I decided to go into the WINN file and found a folder (drivers) and actually saw the little driver file "asc3559f" and was going to simply remove it by copying it to another folder, shutting down and trying to reboot but must admit, I chickendd out. She lives about 100 miles from me so I didn't want to cause trouble and left it alone and I am now beginning to think since it boots after closing the pop up window; leave well enough alone.
