View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently recovered from a nasty virus on my laptop that 'slipped through' Norton AV.I pulled the hard drive and put in a USB enclosure kit and cleaned it with updated Norton and Malwarebytes. I also used UBCD4WIN Boot CD to regain access to the system which corrupted all of the user accounts (userinit.exe)I re-installed and booted the machine in safe mode and after quite a bit of work was able to log in as administrator While there I ran a few reg. c
leanup programs and created a new user with admin rights from Control Panel. My old personal log-in profile (also with administrator rights) still doesn't work. I also can not access these user's files in docs. & sett. while logged on as administrator. I know that they are there ( a lot of docs.) because I can see them when the AV software is scanning the folder(s).Is there a way to retreive these files?
my toshiba laptop was working fine. then a few days ago one of my games gave me a regular error during the start "game.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close." when i clicked 'click here' it displayed some info including "modname:msvcr71.dll". i thought maybe that game had somehow gone corrupt and i reinstalled it. the error did not go away and i was unable to play my game. then suddenly explorer.exe started giving me the same message with the same msvcr71.dll listed as modname. in both cases, the error message says that the following file will be included in the report and then some appcompat.txt in some temp folder. this file was unique everytime but the phrase appcompat.txt was constant. also when i tried to find this file in the specified location i found that it did not exist. i cannot understand what triggers the error, it occurs totally randomly, but i have to be dragging a file icon.
when the error message is displayed, the system does not stop and i can choose to ignore the message for as long as i want, everything is fine. when i click close the explorer restarts.also, recently i got similar errors from vlc player when i tried to play a wmv file in slow motion. this error message also lists msvcr71.dll as mod name.then another game started giving me the same problem with the same modname msvcr71.dll.i cant make any sense of all this.
I have a Compaq-based computer running WinXP SP2 on it and for a little while I've had explorer.exe crash on me from time to time just out of the blue. Well a new problem has risen and it started today and its a nasty one. I was testing out a file-sharing program, but it said I needed the latest Java update to run it, so I went to the Sun Java website and downloaded their J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 06 (that's what was on the site) and got that all set up and started checking out the program I had downloaded earlier (Limewire Basic) from Filehippo.com and as soon as I clicked on a file from the list of files that came up in my search, the program would instantly close out without notification. I didnt see it as a big deal. I got a hold of the file I was downloading, but every time I went to or near the folder in my personal folder's directory, explorer.exe decided to crash on me. So I thought I might have caught a virus, so I looked to see if it was on some programs I've used in the past for finding trojans and whatnot and it came up clean. So I uninstalled and deleted LimeWire and thought maybe the Java had something to do with it. Turns out I was wrong again. So right now this machine has no Java on it. So I went into safe mode and still could not get to the folder with the file in it. Explorer.exe AND the Dr Watson Postmortem Debugger app both crashed on me (got that normal error in which you can send out an error report to Microsoft) and it did this several times.
So then I booted the computer back into the normal mode and attempted to get to the file through the cmd.exe (DOS) program and I eventually figured out (with the help of someone on my buddylist) how to get to the specific directory that the folder was in and I tried to delete it, but everytime I typed "Y" to the prompt, cmd.exe would crash as well. Now it sais that there are 0 files in the folder (has 3 subfolders in it) that I was trying to delete and 5 folders (including the "." & ".." on the DOS prompt. So I've been screwing around with this for about 4 1/2 hours now and I've had no luck getting to that specific folder. If I try to get to it through my folder, explorer.exe crashes. I can get right to the directory that the folder is in and then it will just crash. Everything else seems to run just fine. I havent tried checking the disk check thing, but what does one reccomend I do? I've already reformatted this computer once before (last year) and I dont want to have to do it again (because I dont have the money or the WinXP disk to get it reformatted again).
I experiance this problem mostly when i'm gaming so it makes me think that whats causing it could be an overheating issue. anyway in the middle of a game the computer will just restart and when windows loads it says Windows has just recovered from a critical error.
my Toshiba Satellite M110 recently froze, crashed, displayed the blue screen (beginning dump of physical memory). i restarted the computer, but it suddenly displayed: Read Disk error. Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart.I talked to Toshiba Corp. Australia, but they said i had to bring it in to be repaired, or backed up, then a system restore. my dad has a technician friend, who will be able to back it up... but is there any other ideas? i mean, this might sound rather random and deranged, but does anyone here know how to open up and remove a HDD (hard Disk Drive) from a Toshiba Satellite without blowing anything up? my dad's tech friend has a laptop USB HDD Caddy, but i just need to well yea. i have the recovery disk and know how to recover, so i got that bit covered, just the removal of the HDD before 2nite and safely too. other wise i can just get my dad's tech friend to do it.
View 12 Replies View RelatedRecently my computer has been acting up when I'm using a web-cam. Windows XP will crash and a blue screen pops up. When I restart, I get the following error code:
BCCode : 1000007f BCP1 : 0000000D BCP2 : 00000000 BCP3 : 00000000
BCP4 : 00000000 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 2_0 Product : 768_1
I've used the chkdsk tool, ran antivirus, spyware, dumped the temp files, defraged, and threatened my computer.... nothing came out of it. Any ideas on what the error code means and how to fix it.
I had my kid start my computer Win 2000(mistake) and a different desktop came up. It came up with a registry error and that everything was in admin.bak I copied it to desktop and rebooted now everything is missing. Can I recover my files?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a toshiba laptop running windows xp. It crashed yesterday and now whenever it boots it give me the following error A disk read error occurred Press ctl alt del to restart.I managed to get to the selection of boot in safe mode, but it still won't boot and then I get I/O error reading boot sector. At this point I just want to get the data off it. Toshiba's recovery disk only has the option of formatting the disk and restoring the system to it's initial state (the Toshiba tech support explained that was a benefit, getting it back to the original state
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy problem is a result of a long series of attempts to fix a corrupt Windows registry file. A few days ago I booted my laptop and received a blue screen error: c0000218, relating to a corrupt Windows registry file. Windows could not load. After a lot of searching online I found a way to manually replace this and four other related files from the c:WindowsRepair folder using the command prompt.
This process seemed to work and Windows began to load. I then received a lsass.exe error saying something about invalid passwords. My laptop began an infinite cycle of restarting itself. I looked up the lsass.exe error and people seemed to think it was unrecoverable. As my hard drive was reasonably small (100g) and had been showing some signs of problems I decided to just buy a new one. I went out and purchased a new 320g 2.5" hard drive along with a 2.5" USB drive enclosure and another 1g stick of RAM......
Disabling "Send Error Report" message in when applicatons crash? Question: How does one disable this message in XP when an application crashes?

View 8 Replies View RelatedIt has been 5 days since this problem started. The computer freezes, sort of lags for about 2-3 seconds only while I'm online. It happens about every 15 seconds, but sometimes gets random. Offline there is no problem. I'm on a wireless network (Netgear), none of the other computers have this problem. While it freezes I can still move the mouse and click things but nothing loads for the 2-3 seconds. I'm getting normal temperatures on the PC so I don't believe it's overheating.I did a system restore and it didn't fix the problem. I have also ran several antivirus scans with AVG Pro 7 and PC-Cillin 2005. I've also done scans for worms such as bagle. I've ran Spybot/AdAware/MS Antispyware several times, no pick ups.
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy computer has been freezing randomly for the past couple of days. I have run spybot, microsoft anti-spyware, ad-aware, and norton. Found a bunch of spyware that was successfully removed. No viruses detected at all. Had a friend who does tech support remove a bunch of startup items on my computer too. I usually have my computer connected to the Internet (cable modem), however, just to see what would happen i disconnected it during the day yesterday and it hadn't frozen by the time i got home. It appears that if i'm disconnected from the Internet my computer has no problems, however when connected sometimes it'll freeze after 5 min, sometimes after a few hours. When it freezes i loose control of everything: no mouse movement, caps lock key light won't turn on etc. have to press the reset button each time. Then it starts up and works fine. The computer i'm using is a Toshiba Satellite A-70 notebook. OS is Windows XP. Up until a couple days ago i had no problems with it at all.
View 5 Replies View RelatedApologies for not scrolling through reams of searches but I'm struggling to get to grips with my 'new' XP computer. Sadly, my much loved '98 computer bit the dust on 14th March (as the result of something I allowed a security program to do), and I was unable to revive it.Now I am back online and having to d/l and reinstall all the programs I had on the old computer I find I have things spread over three User Accounts!! I have been looking through the Help files but I thought someone might know of a useful online 'idiots guide' which could get me off to a less confusing start?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI run XP with a broadband connection that works perfectly for browsing etc. However, when I click the "help" button in any program that uses a web based help system I get an error screen saying that my PC cannot connect to the internet.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently tried to use my webshots program to install their calendar to my desktop, and it wound up sending my computer into 'safe mode'. So a friend installed Windows XP Pro for me, and it worked beautifully, got the computer up and running again just fine....but now I can't get online. No internet what-so-ever. I called my internet service Tech guys, they sent me a new modem, and everything there works fine this friend also lent me her old computer, which is what I am using right now, which is how I know the stuff works.
View 2 Replies View Relatedmy computer is definitely connected to the internet, but I can't browse.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI hope this is the correct forum for my problem. I'm unable to get online on my notebook computer although I can log on using my desktop computer! This is driving me crazy, I've tried everything I know, rebooting, system restore, virus check, ran spysweeper, checked the settings in internet options/connections, did renewal of ipconfig/all, etc, but all to no avail. I have a pentium M with Windows XP Home Edition SP2 and have a dlink router connecting both computers via ethernet cables. The internet connection icon in the taskbar area shows that I'm connected, But when I try to open a web browser (IE) I'm getting a "Cannot find server....page cannot be displayed".

Renewed my firewall(Zone alarm extreme) subscription. Downloaded an upgrade and thought(first mistake) it was done. I stepped away from my computer for awhile and my wife sits down to get online. IE8 doesnt pull up so she restarts the computer. NOW...the firewall program is nowhere to be found. Actually when I do a file search, it is an incomplete file. The program isnt in add/remove programs either. Also, IE doesnt allow me access to the internet. I'm using a laptop now through a router which my desktop(the one with the problem) uses. When Windows does a diagnostic test, it suggest that there is a problem with the cables. Theres nothing wrong with the cables. My system restore doesnt work either. Is there a back door to getting online I'm sure that since the Zone alarm wasnt complete, it shut something down.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI often but not always get an error message when working online. I am not sure whether it is a dell problem or my internet service provider. I have dial up. A small box pops up in my face and it says . . . windows must now shut down because the RPC service terminated. System shutdown initiated by NT/AUTHORITY then it counts down 60 sec and shuts off my computer. I have no control when it does this, i cannot X it out or make it stop. Very annoying. Sometimes it goes for hours and does not do anything, sometimes it will do it 3 times in 30 min. I have scanned for virus' and it comes up clear.
