View 6 RepliesI installed Windows XP SP2 Professional on it like a week ago. But instead of erasing everything on it, the computer now gives me a choice between booting with Windows XP, Windows 2000 which I installed a while ago, and just Windows which is ME and has been there for a long time. Now I just wanna format the hd, get rid of everything, and start fresh with just Windows XP.
So I tried going to Command Prompt and typing "Format C:". It gave me the whole this is NTFS, type volume label and its gonna delete all data are you sure, I did all that. Then, it said " Format cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Format may run if this volume is dismounted first. ALL OPEN HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID. Would you like to force a dismount on this volume? <Y/N>. I said yes. Then it says " Cannot lock the drive. The volume is still in use.
When I started my pc today, the fonts all seem to be missing from the machine - so for example, i have symbols instead of letters on the start menu etc.
I assume I need to reinstall xp, but can't for 2 reasons:1. I cannot format the disk- I get an error in cmd saying format cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Format may run if this volume is dismounted first. Problem is, when i say yes to the dismount, I get "cannot lock the drive, volume is still in use".2. I cannot reinstall from the cd - I get a message saying the version of xp on the machine is newer than the one i am trying to install - so cannot install.
I'm having a problem with a laptop that will not boot up.
Lenovo 3000 C100
Windows XP Home
After powering it it up it seems like it does not recognize that the hard drive is there so XP does not boot. No error message. It brings up a Boot Device menu screen with the options to boot from Floppy (does not have one), HardDisk (does not work), CD-ROM or PXE. Choosing HardDisk does not work.
In the BIOS screen the hard disk has the status: "Disable" and there does not seem to be a way to change that. In the BIOS boot sequence the hard disk appears as it should. I've tried reordering the sequence but it makes no difference
HP ZT3000 was working fine. after no major changes, hard drive made a few noises and a missing hal.dll error message appeared. I have tried knoppix, for a few times I was copying files to external hard drive but the transfer stalled. I have tried fixmbr, fixboot, and copying the ntldr and ntdetec files from recovery cd. One strange thing is that the file system is now listed as fat16. Is this data recoverable? I have backed up the system on the external but it was about 2 weeks ago. I would like to recover a few emails in the outlook pst file. Is the hard drive fried or did the boot.ini file become terribly corrupt?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm running Win XP Pro on a Dell Inspiron 8100. The hard drive is partitioned into 2 drives: C and D. C has some Dell stuff, but everything else, including Windows, is on D. When I tried to install an update for SP2, I got an error message that the drive needs 1 more MB of free space. There's only 732KB free on C, but 14GB free on D, so I suspect the update is trying to go to C. Is there any way I can direct updates to D? Or, can the HDD be re-partitioned without losing what's on it?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a computer that has a normal C drive with windows XP installed. I added a second maxtor drive for my data drive. It seems when I add my second drive to my windows xp system it causes XP to lock up with a big blue screen after a certain period of time. It usually is when I have intense drive activity when I am installing programs such as visual studio or some thing like that. Both drives are in the Windows XP NSPF format so I don't think that is the problem.I get tired of reinstalling Win XP everytime this occures.

View 6 Replies View RelatedThe whole stop error is: 0x000000ED (0x81FDB900, 0xc000009c, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) OK, so far, I got a copy of Windows XP Professional SP2. I have been trying and trying to get this stupid computer to work. I have attempted to access the recovery console, to no avail. If I hit the boot from CD ROM, it takes me to which operating system to start from I have TWO choices, (??) One is titled Windows XP Professional. If I click that one, it goes to windows startup page, then BSOD. If I click the other (it just says "Microsoft Windows"), it goes to c:/>, and any command I enter says Bad command or file name. No matter what else I hit, it goes to the Windows screen next and then to BSOD- unmountable boot volume and the previous stop error. Sometimes if Im really lucky (pfft!), I get a screen that says: To continue current upgrade to XP Professional press Enter To cancel current upgrade and install new version hit F10 Or to exit without installing windows hit F3 I dont think I should install the new copy of the OS because there is stuff on this drive the owner needs, pictures and such, and he wont be able to recover them if I write over them with a new OS, right? (Even though I have already tried hitting enter, it's the only option it will respond to- and it doesn't install the OS anyway).(He was not in the process of upgrading when all this went haywire). The last screen I can get is the one where you can start in safe mode, etc. But all of the options bring me ultimately to the BSOD.

View 9 Replies View RelatedThis problem started happening randomly and now I cannot run checkdisk at all on reboot. Basically I cannot run Checkdisk at all on my OS drive because it always says in Windows that it is in use and needs to run the scan on next reboot. After I reboot, the above error message displays (see thread title).I've ran a virus scan and spyware/adware scans and I'm now pretty sure that it isn't the issue. I've tried disabling all non-essential services in services.msc and disabling all startup items under msconfig.exe, neither of which made any difference.I'm really beating my head against the wall on this one, I have no idea what the cause is?

View 1 Replies View Relatedi would be patient and it would go away. at first i noticed that while using msn messenger, its volume control for voice chat controled the main volume for the whole pc. so if it was low things wouldnt sound as high as i wanted. no matter if i adjusted the main volume in the control panel, which was always set to highest, the volume would still be at the mercy of msn m. so if it was lower than usual i would have to sign into msn m and adjust it. not only does this happen with msn m. it also happens with web video applications used by Internet, livevideo, etc etc! those arent usually the culprit of low sound. its usually just msn m.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMan, my computer for the last two weeks have been crashing like an emo. I mean, when I play GTA: San Adreas, in 20 minutes, I get a BSOD with a stop error. When I put hardware acceleration to full, in a half an hour, I get a BSOD with a similar error. Believe me, I got three kinds of errors, and some were from different time. I believe the problem either came from the either the PSU, new 512 mb of ram, old 512, CPU, system board, or the graphic card. I'll try to post the error as best as I can. So, is there a solution to this?
Error Message: STOP 0x000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER (Q293078) This is one of them, but there another one with KMODE that I can't seem to remember. Also, sometimes, after it tries to recover from a serious error, the computer shuts down during the bootup before I can choose which XP version I can choose.
Also, I hate to say this, but I'm not using a legit windows copy sp1, but I have updated to sp2.
i had XP 2008 virus/spyware, which I think I managed to get rid of with Malwarebytes' Anti Malware and System Mechanic 7. Now I have a new problem. After receiving a recent download from microsoft, upon restarting, I get the blue screen of death with this message; STOP: C000021a (Fatal System Error) The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000)
I can't get anywhere into Windows, I've done F2, F8, F12, everything I could think of without risking more damage. I've booted from the system mechanic CD with the Hard Drive recovery, and while it said it found and fixed a problem, it didn't fix this one.
When I'm trying to start up Windows XP Home Edition I receive an error box without an error message, I can just click YES or NO. Neither option let's me continue. When starting up in Safe Mode, everything works fine.
