I have a standalone Dell Pentium 4 computer with XP Home SP2. I just recently set up with a password protected account and also a limited account. I want to limit internet access on limited account.
After long periods of my internet connection being idle (2+ hours usually), all programs requiring internet access are unable to connect. By idle I mean I leave to run some errands with no programs other than Zone Alarm running. My DSL modem still has all lights flashing and active. There are a couple other scenarios where this occurs as well. Ex. I'm playing WoW for extended periods but not using the internet through any other program, then upon alt-tabbing no other applications are able to connect to the internet even though WoW is still connected and functioning. Rebooting the router/modem doesn't fix it, but rebooting the comp does.
I think that I have a virus which is stopping me from 1) Installing Norton Internet Security 2005 properly, and 2) Stopping me from accessing all anti-virus related sites, for example - www.symantec.com, ww.grisoft.com, www.pandasoftware.com, and when i tried to download AVG 6.0 from another site which was unrelated to antivirus, I found that I could access the site but the download failed.
a pc with windows xp pro suddenly started not to access the internet or the workgroup it normally worked on. ethernet card is present in hardware devices, network connection says it "is there", the IP numbers etc. are all as they were.I have even tried a rollback to the time it worked fine, but no net
computer in my possession crashed, and when i reset, my internet has gone wonky. I use MSN as my ISP, and before, i could access internet explorer, or firefox, or any program without ever actually having to sign in to MSN. after the crash, however, i now have to sign in to access internet explorer, firefox, and a couple programs. what angers me, however, is that i DONT have to sign in to access trillian. Limewire, also, will connect, but wont download anything without msn being logged in. How do i get back to how it was? And no, system restore did not work.
I have been trying to download America's Army (2.5GB) via http for a while now with no success. What happens is that the download just stops at the 2GB mark for no apparent reason. I tried using Firefox 2.0.0.3, IE6 and IE7 (which I downloaded against my better judgment) all with the same faliure. The first time, I tried to download it from gamearena.com.au (hosted by Bigpond) and all subsequent times, as unmetered content from my ISP (Inter node).I first googled the problem and came up with lots of questions but no answers. Then I emailed my ISP who are usualy outstanding for customer support (they haven't outsourced their call centers and don't plan to) but they too couldn't find a specific answer. They were however able to suggest that it was a Windows thing as there was nothing about my connection or firefox that would limit download size to 2GB.So the question stands; How do I get Windows XP Media center 2005 to allow over size http downloads?
whats the max number limit of user accounts that can be created in XP Pro.cant seem to find any info on it.there must be a limit. (I am refering to both the logon screen, which i think is 5, and actual number of user accounts in the system like is seen in the "local users and groups" section)The reason for me asking is b/c my friends mom needs to share out a file at her work and they dont have a server. (guessing maybe 7-13 people) All of which are going to be needing very different access rights to this folder.Id like to just create a user account for each person and adjust the folder share rights by each user. And this way each person could have thier own username and PW for making the connection as if they were connecting to a file share on a 2000 server.
i recently made a home network on my pc using XP. All went fine.
I then connected to my network from my other pc upstairs and tried to send a 4.5gb file it got all the way to the end then says "disk is full" but the computer i set up my network with has 60gb spare.

I have a family PC running XP Home with six user accounts. All are administrator accounts and I prefer to keep them that way. The PC is firewalled and has AV and anti-spyware SW and I try to educate my family in safe computing practices. My problem is that the 8, 11, and 15 y-o boys keep screwing up each others accounts (on purpose) by changing each other's passwords, or changing them to limited accounts. My 11 y-o for example, thinks his 8 y-o brother should not be allowed to install "Sponge Bob Whatever"; so he changes his account to limited. (Somehow he thinks it is ok though to install Limewire or Bearshare even after I tell him not to).Is there a way in XP Home to give users "Power User" privileges which will allow them to do most everything administrators can do, but not be able to access other user accounts?
I just Installed Windows XP X64 onto my desktop PC and cannot access the internet. My graphics is not displaying like it's supposed to, and the sound isn't working. The graphics, and sound I can figure out myself, but the internet I've come to a brick wall. I have a 1394 connection, but there's no local area connection. I'm at a wall, I'm using a linksys router and I get no I.P. address. I've tried going directly from the modem to the PC, and powercycling my modem, and still nothing

I just put together a new computer with a ASUS P5P800 motherboard, 1gb Ram, 200gb hard drive. AMI BIOS, Marvell 88E8001 GB LAN controller (built in NIC) and I am unable to access the Internet. Device manager lists the Network adapter and I tried uninstalling and reinstalling. It also hangs whenever I try to use dialup. It dials and hangs. Tested modem in Control panel and I can Query the modem fine. I suspect that it has to do with my BIOS settings, but I cannot figure it out. I am running WinXP Pro, SP1.
I have several workstations that can access the internet and xbox and ps3 just fine. but for some reason my main pc can no longer access any website page, but can still browse the LAN and get to the routers homepage, and i can get my dchp from router so we know this is not a physical layer one issue with the nic card or network cable, it seems like its just a http port 80 issue? any suggestions maybe reset my IP stack?I have moved my question to the "Networking section" can you please remove

I have two computers one is running W2000 and the other is running Windows XP Home. They are both hooked up to a Linksys router. Today I cannot access the internet on the XP computer. I have a computer running XP1 which does not have access to the internet. I received an xp2 disk in the post and tried to update the computer. Unfortunately, after going through the lengthy update process, the computer freezes - after a couple of opening pages the 'running blue beads' sequence opens up and freezes. Can anyone advise me what to do please - as I can't access my computer at all.
I'm having a problem that I could really use some help with. Two days ago I started having a problem accessing the internet after re-booting my machine. My machine is virus free, I'm sure of that. I thought it was some software that I had installed eg. ProSecurity. I uninstalled all traces of it. Still I have this problem. After re-booting I need to manually re-start my router in order to connect to internet or send/receive mail. I can get an IP but can't ping anyone. In Event Viewer I have these msg's.
1)The IP address lease 192.1 for the Network Card with network address 001151 has been denied by the DHCP server 192.XXX.XXX.X (The DHCP Server sent a DHCPNACK message).
2)Your computer was not able to renew its address from the network (from the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 001151.The following error occurred: The operation was canceled by the user. . Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server.
3)The IPSEC Services service terminated with the following error:an invalid argument was supplied.
Hello, my friend at school built me a computer about two years ago. I recently got a debilitating virus on it, so I decided to reinstall the OS. I previously had XP Pro on it, but I didn't have the disk or the serial number so I installed a copy of XP home that I had laying around my house. After re-formating the hard drive and installing xp, I am now unable to access the internet. Also the graphics look very poor on my monitor. I am guessing it has something to do with my motherboard. So I went into device manager and there is a ?! next to the following things: ethernet controller, pce device, sm bos controller, unknown device and video controller.I have an ASUS P5L-vm socket 775 motherboard. I tried going on their website and looking up what to install, but I was unable to decifer which one to grab.
My friend was given a laptop that was totally poluted with trojens (256) and other malware. He could not get on the web at all. I ran Avast, adaware spybot and eliminated the mal ware. Still no internet. Next I went to services and changed the apporiate settings that had been turned off and wow internet sort off. I can access some sites but not all. I was able to update to service pack 2 and do all of the updates.
