It's Mass Hysteria! Temp Files Found That Don't Exist - Spyware Removers Gone Wild
Apr 29, 2007
I was running The Cleaner for the first time and it found several files to delete that I can't seem to find on my system. It shows them to be temp files but I like to be sure so I went searching for them. They're not visible. I've enabled the see all files so it should be there. But it's not. I did however find these files and am wondering why they would be found under IE5 which I haven't used now since the rebuild. And I don't think that was even under this hard drive! Is it safe to let it delete, or is that stuff I shouldn't delete?

Also I'm concerned by this message that keeps coming up saying Browser Help Objects have been detected - The following BHO has been added to your system: {BDF3E430~B101~42AD~A544~FADC6B084872} and I can either remove it or keep it. I ran a program called BHODemon to check it out and it found several BHO's but they were all legit. Could this all just be from a conflict from having SpywareGuard and Spybot both on my machine? Spybot seem to be going crazy asking if I want to change things. I can't stop them from popping back up when I close one another comes up. The error messages are always different too which is really confusing.
Have a number of "Temp" directories on the C root directory (Directory names such as: "Adobe Acrobat.temp" - "Console.temp" - "Display.temp" - "DLA Writing.temp" - "McAfee.temp" - "Intel chipset.temp").
Near as I can tell these directories were created when I installed these programs, but not completely sure.
I have learned the hard way that, "Not all temp directories can or should be deleted."

When my Norton Internet Security 2005 runs a disk drive scan it locates a file it identified as Spyware in the Windows Directory. The file name is symentra .exe. I've currently blocked access to the Internet for this file but when it tries to access it just keeps trying relentlessly. Does anyone know if I need this file or is there a way to delete it?
Evidently, the vic32.dll was removed when I removed some adware/spyware that had infected my PC. I have since re-downloaded the vic32.dll, but do not know where to locate it. Can someone tell me in what folder the vic32.dll should reside?

In the Local Settings Folder there is a folder with Temporary Internet Files and Temp Files.I understand the Temporary Internet Files and know what to do with them.My question is do I need to keep the temp files?
My browser files have are very confusing. My C:Documents and SettingsUSERNAMELocal Settings Temp has some junk, but some of it is active system files- which shouldn't be there. One folder in ''Temp'' is called ''Cookies''. Another folder in ''Temp'' is called ''History'' and contains ''History.IE5''. also ''temporary internet files''.There is also a ''History'' folder one level up (where it should be) that has no''History.ie5''. There is also a ''Cookies'' folder two levels up (where it should be). It seems to be an exact duplicate of the one in the ''Temp'' folder, I deleted all the other files in ''Cookies'', but they reappeared later. If I try to delete(in safe mode) everything in the Temp folder, I discover that they reappear after restart. how can i get rid of files from temp folder.and also how can i restore History folder which has no historyIE6 sub folder.same with temporary internet folder.
Windows XP SP2 temp files I would just like to know if I can safely delete ALL the temp files in this folder, if for no other reason than to free up some space, or maybe speed up things a little bit. A simple search under Windows Explorer(*.tmp )has some files show up as Windows emp, some as Windowssystem32, and some as Program Files PC MightyMax, but all of these are listed as tmp in the TYPE heading of Windows Explorer. In addition, I've never used the Hijack This program before but I will now to submit what I guess is a snapshot of my system...?? Perhaps someone could suggest adjustments, if any, as my system does run slow on many occasions. My specs are as follows: Windows XP SP2 Home Edition, IE6, McAfee Internet Security Suite 2005, 2.4ghz processor, 256MB RAM, 40GB hard drive (NTFS file system).
Since receiving a curt 'wrap on the knuckles' for not doing my research properly into another annoying prob I had, I tend to hold back and read through as many similar posts as poss.I can see the ways to get rid of temp files etc but I do not understand what is happening in my partic. case.I have a home/self build (28 May 2005)comp. for flight sim usage in the main. The help I got is no longer there for me.In My Comp/Winxp(D/Temp there are currently 52 Files & 5 Folders using 4.93MB on disk.
Need reassurance, I ran an optimizer (PC Pitstop) and one of the entries was that I have 373,445 temp files. Is it safe to delete these? Shoud I back up the registry first?
i would like to delete all cookies and temp files, i no how to delete everything. what i dont no is how to keep my login and password cookies that log me in automaticly can some tell what cookies i keep for this site to keep my login stuff.col.tia
For some reason I am now accumulating temp files in my Windows emp directory at a rate of 2 EVERY 2 minutes. They are 0kb in size and consist of nothing if I open them in notepad. They are named along the lines of A401 or B01 and I don't know where they're coming from. I see no unknown processes in taskmanager and I have virus checked and adaware&spybot checked my system to no avail. I left my PC (which is standalone and not connected to the Internet) running overnight, doing nothing, and there were over a 1000 temp files the next day.
On the old computer Window 98, I always delete the Temp Files. When I went to see how many files are in this new computer by typing *.tmp,. One file is big 1.000 kb. It is safe to erase those files?
Is it safe to delete all the temp files? A good way I found to find them all is "Search" "Files and Folder" *.tmp Lots come up. Can I just select them all and delete them all?
I regularely use CCleaner to quickly remove junk from my computer. It empties the "Temporary Internet Files" folder and many temporary files but it does not empty the "Temp" folder in Windows XP (C:Documents and Settings(Account Name)Local SettingsTemp) or the "My Temp Files" folder within the "Temp" folder. I've noticed that videos I've watched online get stored in this folder as well as folders full of virus signatures downloaded before doing free online virus scans. Consequently this folder can quickly eat up valuable space on my laptops little hard drive.
I was there today and her pc is soooooo slow! She knows nothing about pc's besides email and IM.First thing I was going to do was to delete all her temp files. Went to start, clicked on run, typed in %temp% and up came 2,049 temp files! Well, duh no wonder it's slow. I was explaining to her what 'temp files' are. But she doesn't even you the internet. The first page of her temp file was as follows:DF1CF4and when I tried to delete them it said : cannot delete ~~ DF1CF4: It is being used by another person or program. As I scrolled through the next few pages they seemed to be all alike, maybe a variance of the last two numbers.
I am unable to delete certain temporary files from CD burn Problem seems to be with Illustrator ai and eps files.Tried re-booting, closing all apps and have even deleted original files from directory, but still recieve error message indicating files are in use when I try to delete them.
I've noticed that when deleting TIF's via Tools-Internet Options-Delete Files, that it takes far longer with my XP installation than with my old ME install. I see that the space allowed by default is 1192 MB. Is this the optimum size or should that be smaller to avoid accumulating so many files? I really don't recall what the setting was in ME days, but 400 MB seems to stick in my head.
A large number of files have started appearing in my WindowsTemp folder. They have the name CS.tmp where is a decimal or hexadecimal number. Most of them are zero byte.Does anyone know what creates them? I can only delete them by using Safe Mode. I thought they might be from Thumbs Plus (CeriousSoftware) but it is not running.
a while ago someone told me how to get rid of all my temp files while in SAFE MODE by going to START, then RUN and then typing in a command that i simply cannot recall. i've tried *TEMP*, *TMP*, *.TMP*......and many other variations, to no avail. could someone tell me what the correct command is?i just spent a couple of hours trying to see if my question was already addressed, but had no luck finding anything. forgive me if it's there, i just couldn't find it
Can I safely delete all those .log files in my temp folder all are 2K or 3K size. Also, is there software out there that would help clean up some of these unwanted files?
