One cannot install an OS on a USB hard drive, can one?I just tried to install x64 XP on my USB WD 250gB while having 32bit XP on my internal HD, and my computer would keep restarting. Somehow I got to the boot menu and got to start the computer and edited the boot.ini and got rid of the problem.
I'm thinking about starting over. I have an O/S (winxp pro) that is hopelessly messed up. Is it possible to install a new HD, install xp pro on it and then install the present c drive HD as d drive and save all the data on it to the new HD? I don't want to reformat the present drive and loose everything there

I had a problem with my windows. When ever I plug in my Flash drive (i got a few: kingston data traveller 1gig, pendrive 128mb,etc) onto my usb port. Window will be able to detect the drive had been plug in. I can see the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon on the right side of my task bar. But i cannot see the drive appearing in "My Computer". If I double click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon and try to view the external drive information, I can see that its already detected and being assign with drive E: . Even if I open a windows explorer and type in E: , it will throw me an error "Cannot find 'file:///E:/'. Make sure the path or Internet address is correct". But if I were to restart my computer, then i can see it for the first time. If I disconnect it (thru the "Safely Remove Hardware") and plug it back in (or plug another flash drive), I cant see the external drive. Causing I had to restart my computer multiple time a day.

I cannot install Windows XP onto a SATA hard drive. I read that I need to install the drivers for the HD separately during the Windows installation but how do I do that.
I can't install Windows to the SATA drive. It loads everything it needs, then when it tries to boot, it says the files aren't found. I'm guessing it can't read it without the drivers installed, but how do i do that with no OS? I was thinking of dual booting with linux.
I can not boot from DVD's laptop (just from floppy), and I have winxp kit on harddrive. Can I install it from there (an how) or from LAN (my laptop can not boot from LAN)?
I've been trying to install windows xp from a cd onto my dell c400 notebook which does not have an internal cd drive. Thus far I've tried to pre-load the installation files on the hard drive and boot from them, use windows PE to install off a network cd drive, and install off an external usb cd drive
I have a notebook computer which the hard drive is dodgy in.I have restored to the HD and after a while it Windows XP corrupted again. I don't want to spend any money on it but I would like to keep using the computer so I looked at swapping the HD with another HD (from a USB case) but one was SATA and the other PATA.So the only option left (short of spending money) is installing and booting from the USB drive? Is this possible?
I have xp pro installed on the c: I want to install xp home on the I drive but on the setup up screen it says I can only install it on f:/ or d; or e:/ why dont I get all the drives I have formatted to install to instead of 3 partitions allocated?
I've tried to install fresh version of Win XP pro. However, as XP tries to format to 100%, before formatting is complete, I get the error saying it cannot format the drive due to "drive damage." At first I thought it was because I had a dead Hard Drive. So I then used a spare drive I had on hand, but again got the same error. I then went out and got a brand new one, but again, got the same error. I now don't believe the hard drives are dead, but something else is wrong. I've tried using another XP home disc I had, and got the same error.
OK, I just finished building my PC, but I can't figure out how to install XP (don't stop reading, it isn't that easy).I get XP Pro SP2 through the Microsoft Campus Agreement for free, since I'm a full time student, it's legit.Problem is, they can only provide it as a self extracting executable.I can't get it on a bootable cd.I want to do a clean install, without installing a previous version of windows and then installing XP pro on top.
computer about 5 years ago, it came with Windows XP Home edition reinstalled. The manufacture did not include a windows XP Home disc - instead there is a Windows XP Home code sticker on the back of the computer.

Now my million dollar question - Product key codes with Windows XP; f I borrowed a retail copy of Windows XP Home can I use the Windows code from the Microsoft Windows XP Home sticker on my computer to reinstall Windows XP Home on my system and activate it or do I need a new key code?
I've been having problems with the PC (Windows XP) and just want to start from scratch. What's the quickest way to reformat the drive so I can re-install Windows XP and go from there. Also, is there any software you recommend to try and protect from viruses etc. I did have Zone Alarm and AVG, but maybe that's not enough.
I neeed to recover my hard drive but it is a work laptop and I dont have the Windows-XP Pro CD. I could send the machine back to the head office but I will end up with a formatted drive which I dont want. Is there any way I can restore from an ASR backup without going into Xp Setup?

I have recently bought a new computer that came with windows vista as you may have guessed the experience mostly has not been a good one, with lots of compatibility issues. I want to dual boot Vista with XP but the problem is I have heard windows XP does not have the SATA drivers on the disc. I understand that you just need to insert a floppy and push F6 I think but the problem is I don't have a floppy drive! Is there anyway I can slipstream the drivers into the install or something?

Hit cntl+alt+del to restart. How do I Install windows xp onto this harddrive when I can't get past this message?
To anyone that might be able to help... I've had this external hard drive for a long time and I haven't been able to access it to store lots of music and videos on. My computer sees that it is there, but like I had said earlier, I can't use it. It won't let me see it unless I go to Device Manager. My computer is getting old on me and it's been places most labtops shouldn't have gone... Once in Purgatory, and now, it's on Hell's surface. I get the safely remove hardware icon down by my clock, but I don't want to remove it, I want to use it. I want it to show up in my drives so I can instantly see how much space I have left and what not... I went through the Troubleshooter, tried every possible way that I can think of, the ways the troubleshooter.
I'm having problems formatting a hdd to install Winxp. A friend gave me his old HP 743a comp (2.4 Ghz, 512 mb ram) because the monitor kept going black. I am fairly sure the problem was one of the CPU heatsink clips was broken and not allowing contact between heatsink and cpu. It doesn't go black now that I have fixed the clip. He removed his HDD, so I bought a second hand 10 Gb just to see if I could get the thing running. I formatted the HDD with a win98se boot disk. Everything goes well except I can't get the "start with cdrom support" page to come up. The Cd drive is a CD-RW/DVD combo drive (32 x 10 x 12 x 40x). Sorry I can't find the brand and model number at the moment. I did check up on it a week ago and it's only supported by win2000 and winxp. I was wondering if this could be the problem?
