Explorer Consumes All Memory And Cpu Usage
Sep 13, 2005
Windows Explorer consumes all available memory and cpu time until performance becomes pathetic or the system crashes. I have been running everything from the Task Manager for the past 5 months. I have Dell 2400, Win XP home, Norton AV, Firewall etc, MS anti spyware. Have run every AV scan know to man and MS antispyware and others including Registry editors.

I'm running XP pro SP2. I have a gig of ram and my mother board is an Intel D101GGC. My CPU is Intel Pentium D 920.
If I use Windows Explorer to go deeper than the first level of any tree, CPU usage goes to 100% and stays there. I've disabled System Restore because it wouldn't let me go back in time anyway and this program is a known resource gobbler. Didn't help. I've attached a hijackthis logfile to see if anyone recognizes a Trojan, etc. I would appreciate any help at all.

So I startup my computer and it works at a staggeringly slow pace.Using Process Explorer I've found that an instance of svchost.exe with only the Dnscache service is consuming my CPU.If I kill the process then the problem goes away. However, this seems to make other apps like Explorer do funny things, like take me off line constantly. Also, Dnscache (a Microsoft product) seems to be an important component of a healthy, internet-connected Windows XP. Anyone know how I can repair the Dnscache service.

I have recently become annoyed at the high memory usage of the svchost.exe process. I have 8 of these services running at the moment. I havent had reason to complain until recently when they seem to be using more memory than necessary. I might just be over reacting here but perhaps someone can verify it for me. I have included a hijackthis log at the bottom.my system is running WindowsXP SP2, Asus K8VSE deluxe, Athlon 64 3200, 1.75 GB RAM, updated via drivers and windows updates (except one that just came in and I havent done yet). These just seem like too much memory for these. I have check at blackviper and didnt really see a lot of things I could turn off. I could be wrong though.

Both svchost.exe + wuauclt.exe's memory usage occassionally increases rapidly even if my laptop is idle. I have to terminate wuauclt.exe manually (through End Process in Task Manager) in order for the 'Commit Charge' to return to late 300/early 400M figures. If my 'Commit Charge' is 5XXM or above, if I plug any USB devices Windows XP won't recognise them. I have to terminate memory consuming programs (e.g. Firefox), restoring the Commit Charge to 4XXM, then Windows XP will recognised any USB devices I plug in. However, if I plug any USB devices right at the beginning when I turn on the laptop, I won't encounter any problems. Why is this?

I recently got my HP back from Best Buy, where they had to 'clean' it due to spyware, adware problems (no more Kazaa for the kids). Evidently, I had the nail.exe file, in addition to others. After 12 days, they gave it back to me, completely clean (according to them), with Norton Internet Security installed - in the process they lost all my e-mail files, but oh well. Anyway, I haven't had the darn thing back 2 weeks and I'm getting 100% CPU usage, with explorer.exe being the main hog. When I delete it in the processes list, the CPU usage goes down to 4%. I really don't want to take this thing back to BB for them to keep for another 2 weeks.

I have run ad-aware, spybot, AVG, microsoft antispyware, checked my HJL for an strange occurences, ran chkdsk, This seems to be a pretty large problem, since i've been spending considerable time on the internet trying to find solutions, but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot out there.

Win Xp - Service Pack 2, I suspect the problem lays with a trojan dropper. In fact I'm certain. At the moment I am getting a trojan dropper putting random files into my temp internet files every 3-4 hours - the latest file being SQL.AVG?? Norton deletes it as soon as it appears but I'm certain its causing my 90-100% CPU usage on explorer. exe. Its been doing this for about the last week.
I've got all of these installed - ZoneAlarm, Norton, AVG 7.1, Ad-Aware Se and even Microsoft Anti-Virus. I updated them all and went into safe mode and ran every single one of them on full scan and none have found the culprit. When booted back into normal mode the trojan dropper has started again and cpu usage back up to 100% for explorer.exe. Basically everthing crawls after 5 or so minutes of reboot.

An interesting problem has come up recently. If I try to open My Computer to access some file or what not, instead of bringing me to the list of drives, I get a blank white space. It never loads. From here, I can Cntrl Alt Delete and clearly see that the CPU usage is at 100% and that it is Explorer that is taking up 99% of it. I end the task of opening my computer, and then I try again and everything is fine until maybe five minutes later when the problem reoccurs. I have run virus checkers and adaware and neither has shown any problem

Windows seem to have a REALLY big problem when it comes to reading AVI files. It seems that when you click on an AVI file in explorer, it'll try to read the entire AVI file to determine the width, height, etc. of the AVI file this is displayed in the Properties window. Now the problem with Windows is that if you have a broken/not fully downloaded AVI file that doesnt contain this info, Windows will scan the entire AVI file trying to figure out all these properties which in the process will probably cause 100% CPU usage and heavy memory usage.

All the .html files on mywindows XP sp2 machine have been renamed to .htm and further when I try to rename them, the explorer CPU usage suddenly increases to maximum. But, some files gets renamed and others can't be renamed at all. And, for those which cannot be renamed, I get a pop-up error message saying "file is being used by another program and cannot be renamed.", and that's when explorer starts using all of CPU and system gets very slow.I have already done full system scan through Kaspersky and Malware Bytes Anti-Malware, but they have simple turned out to be futile.

However, as soon as i open Norton Antivirus , the problem stopped (until the next time i restart the computer and log on).
On loggin in, I checked the cpu usage with taskmgr, and foud that it was goin pretty high (jumping frm 10%to 60% or 80%).. when i checked out the running processes, "EXPLORER.EXE" was taking up around 95% or so.

I have a Toshiba Satellite notebook (about 18 months to two years old) running XP Pro, and frequently I encounter a situation where, with no programs running, explorer.exe "cycles" in activity and CPU usage - for example, from 30,000 K Memory Usage to 50,000 K to 70,000 K to 90,000 K (over the course of 10 seconds or so), then drops back down to 30 or 40,000K and starts over.

My explorer has gone nuts. It will run programs, run shortcuts to anything but folders and the real problem is that it wont open a signal folder either by explore or open commands. I've reinstalled WINXP off the CD as update, nothing happened. I've ran the steps listed in the last forum. Nothing has worked. I'm desperate. I'm running WinXP Professional on a basically 7 month old Dell comp with 512RAM and a 2.4 GhZ Pentium in it. I'm lost at what to do.

I'm using an old Compaq Presario v2630US with WinXP SP2 running on it. Recently, I had trouble playing a .MOD file; this was when i didn't know i could just change the extension to .mpg, so I refreshed the codecs on my system. After that, explorer would freeze up every time i opened a folder with .avi files. So i uninstalled the codecs, didn't help, so disabled the thumbnail generation option in the registry. that helped somewhat. Explorer itself doesn't freeze up as much, but it still takes up humongous amounts of memory (upto 300 megs on a machine with 1 gig of RAM).

I have Windows XP Pro sp2 and use Internet Explorer 7.
In Internet Explorer, on the address bar, you can click the down arrow at the right end of the bar and this causes a Drop Down List to appear, that shows URLs you've recently typed in and gone to. Can this list be cleared and if so how and is the information completely gone even though you can't see it?
