May 1, 2005Ok Dum question - How does one hook up a single monitor to dual pci express video cards with a Y or is dual pci express for dual monitors?

2 Video Cards - No Dual Screen Option
Jun 20, 2006I have had two video cards in this machine (Windows XP Home SP2) in the past for a dual screen setup.Today I put in a 2nd video card again (as the one that was in there previously has gone walk-about) but I dont have the option in windows for the 2nd screen.Everything appears fine in device manager (the screen that is working is the PCI ViRAGE one), as for the GeForce - well the light on the monitor comes on but doesnt display a picture, but in display properties there is no option for the 2nd card. (see attached screenshot)

Jan 9, 2009Recently I opened up my computer to take the dust out of it as I have before. I hadent done so in a long time so there was some caked on dust on some components. I took the RAM out an cleaned it, re-installed it. I also took my vidoe card out because the heat sink had been cloged with dust aswell. After putting everything back and restarting my computer I recived this msg before windows start up. Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEMand it followed with instruction to use the xp setup disk to repair the problem. so I threw the windows CD in, and tried to repair however the program tells me I have no hard drive installed. Which I do since my computer is 3 years old now and has been working fine. I hadent changed any bios settings, I never disconnected the hard dirve either.

May 21, 2008I was having problems due to SP3 but I didn't know it. I haven't seen any posts on it here but there's a big hubub over at the microsoft technet forum.) Ran a dell diagnostic and had many system memory failures come up. So, I decided to reseat my memory cards for a start. It was the first time I opened up my Dell Dimension 8400 (which I purchased about 4 years ago...I hope that gives some help as to what is in it because I really don't know besides that it has an intel pentium 4 inside). It was VERY dusty so we bought some canned air and went about cleaning it. I did use a vacuum on the inside cover but I was careful not to touch any of the componenets inside. I followed all of the instructions. We did blow air into the fan (something I didn't know wasn't good, per another site I went to later that said you shouldn't)! When we plugged everything back in it worked it's way up to a very loud whirring noise (I thought the fan was going to just break off and fly around the room!). Could be I just had never heard it run outside of the cupboard on my desk (which I now know I shouldn't have had it in)! But, the worst part is, my monitor does not come up with the computer (doesn't matter how many times I press the on/off on the monitor) and not even the lights on the keyboard light up

Aug 22, 2008This problem is kind of wierd I was having problems with my video card. When I went to boot up the screen would go black. New drivers would not fix the issue. So I bought the same videocard again, thinking that something was wrong with the old one. The new videocard still doesn't work, but in the process of trying to boot up it did something to the registry, so now if I try to boot up I see a blue screen which says there is a registry problem and it shuts the computer down. Getting frustrated I thought it was best to just reinstall XP - so I started the process, only when it got to which partition you tell it to use I got the same blue screen with a registry error. So now what? How can I reinstall XP I thought that when you were installing XP it was basically "running" off of the install disc, so how could the registry be effecting it?

Dec 7, 2005I am trying to get a computer to output the same thing to at least two seperate monitors. All I can seem to manage to do is get an extended desktop, which means I can drag things off of my screen onto the other monitor instead of displaying the same thing on both monitors which is what I am trying to do. When I uncheck the "Extend my windows desktop to this computer" on another display it disables the monitor, and when I enable the display it automatically checks it.
In this Compaq (I know Compaq sucks) computer I have 2 video cards. One onboard, and one PCI. The PCI video card has 2 outputs, the onboard has one. I have reached a point where in Windows XP I can output to 3 seperate monitors utilizing the extended desktop feature, which means I am outputting from the PCI video card and the onboard video card. In order to do this I used a microsoft work around in which you must disable hardware acceleration on each driver.

Trouble Dual Booting - Characters And Letters Go Blank On Dual Boot Screen
Jun 28, 2010I have been trying to install Windows XP as a second OS as I already have Windows 7 Ultimate installed. Unfortunately, after I select a partition, format it, and reboot the system stalls on the screen after the BIOS that has something to do with a list of devices and such. After 10 or so seconds a few characters and letters go blank randomly on the page. I rebooted and selected my cd drive as the boot device and accidentally didn't press a button in time to boot and a bunch of highlighted numbers were thrown all over the screen and a random smiley face on one of the lines.

Jan 12, 2009I'm trying to dual boot 2 different installs of xp pro from 2 drives using the Windows boot loader. I've edited the boot.ini every possible way I can think of, but nothing works. I've done this plenty of times using a linux boot loader or dual booting from a single drive but I cant figure this out. I haven't been able to find any reference to this subject anywhere, but I think it would work. Anybody have a clue as to how to do this? I know I can use a different boot manager to accomplish this, I just wanted to make the Win boot.ini work. Or, does anybody know of a good boot manager if I cant make this work?

I would then hope at boot - up to be given the choice of which OS to load.

Oct 31, 2007Recently I was playing a game, when my screen froze. I then shut my computer down to restart it, used it a few times (in 4-bit safe mode), then after I shutdown again, I cant log back in... it just freezes and the screen flashes, I cannot boot into my computer setup (default f2) or into safe mode (default f8), however I can run the XP cd and get into the recovery console, is there any way that I can change the boot sequence from the recovery console? The screen is dotted with a bunch of dots up and down the screen in columns, and is in 4-bit video mode.
I have a Dell xps gen 5 with xp home.
the error I get is:
"Error: Cant enter setup. Video Mode 103 not supported by this video card."
Imported Video Footage Playing On Audio Line Not Video?
Sep 20, 2005I have managed to put video footage onto my PC from a video cassette (by plugging my VCR into the TV aerial socket). The video footage is saved on my PC as .mpg files & when I open them, they play fine on Windows Media Player.When I import them on to Windows Movie Maker, they are recognised as video footage and I am able to put them into the collections as video. However, for some reason, when I drag them onto the timeline, they go onto the audio line & I can't get them to go on the video line, so when I play it, the sound plays but there is no picture. I have tried saving them as .AVI files but that makes no difference

Oct 11, 2007I have window XP SP2 installed on my laptop. I also use InterVideo WinDVD Creator for video editing. Recently when I try to import video file into my application, my laptop, processing percentage goes up to 98%, and the application just freezes up. I also tried the Microsoft movie maker software and I get the same result. I was wondering if I need to reinstall the application or there is something that my laptop is missing. The application was functioning fine until 2 days ago, and since then I haven't installed any other application.

Apr 25, 2007When I boot my computer Windows freezes at the "Windows is starting..." screen but I can still move the mouse. This just began today. It does this same thing when I boot in the last good config and safe mode. So basically, Windows won't get past this screen no matter what mode I use.Also, I can't reinstall XP because I get a technical error blue screen that says I may not have adequate disk space, a driver may need to be disabled, or I may need to change the video adapter whenever I try to boot from the install CD. The message also says "pci.sys."

Dec 27, 2007My kid just disabled the video adapter on his XP Pro machine (Compaq, PII, on-board video) and now the initial Win XP screen comes up then goes dark once it gets mostly through the boot-up. It won't do any different in safe mode and even installing an AGP video card didn't get me around this. Short of reloading XP, is there a fix for this? Also tried reloading default BIOS settings just in case, no change.
