D drive contains 212 free GB and my C drive only contains 13.
1_Why is there so much space in the D, but almost none in the C
2_Can i make the D drive my main driver and how?
3_If i move all programs to my D drive will they still function correctly?
I'm told that drives often now come in both serial & parallel versions. Is there plugs that allow you to use either if your motherboard supports both or if you wished to use the older sort with a new motherboard? Do newer motherboards usually support using both sort of drives at once & is there any problem in doing so?
I need to learn more about backups. Bottom line is what do I do right now to make sure what I need is saved, because there's some indications that my hardware may be failing. But I want to do it right from the git-go so I don't waste a lot of time redoing things.
A) I have read the 1/26/06 thread started by cway's question--["Originally Posted by cway I am a 'Novice' to Backups, but am trying to learn..."]. It all seems to make sense to me.
B) Now I want to use what Stallcup (in that post) suggests as the 3rd option--["3) You want to avoid having to reinstall WinXP and have the quick, less labor intensive way of frequently backing up programs files and data." namely "frequently clone the system HDD to the backup HDD. In this way, if the system HDD gets corrupted, I can clone the backup HDD back to the system HDD"]
C) I have MAJOR concerns about what Bob Cerelli mentions about having outdated datafiles backed up--["...data has changed since the image was made, you will have old data restored. But a lot depends on how the computer is orgainized. For example, if just the OS and programs are on one partition which is imaged, and data on another, then restoring that first partition it will not affect data."] I have ADD-like memory problems about when I back up what, and I can't afford to overwrite new data with old...
Soooooo... I'm planning to buy a 200gb external hard drive. Then what?
1) what software do you recommend? a) Should I use the HP software that came with my computer? or buy something? b) Ghost? is that Symantec? (Can someone say more about the concerns with using that software?) c) Does "ghosting" mean the same thing as "cloning" (in Stallcup's post--#2 above)?
2) how do I know if all my OS and programs are on one partition? (I have an HP and the hard drive is obviously partitioned into "HP_Pavilion (C)" and "HP_Recovery (D)".
I want to format my computer and start fresh again my problem is I don't know how? I also want to know if my operating system came on the recovery disc? As far as I know I didn't get a Windows Xp cd. If the Operating system is on the recovery disc where would the cd key number be (it's not on any of the cd sleeves)? I'm not sure what info you guys need or if you need any at all but I will be ready to list it if asked. Thanks.
1. i want see the control panel in classic form..what do i do? 2. when i try see a photo, i cant any more. I can explore it but no view...What should i do about?
I had to reformat my HD and decided to try creating two partitions on the C drive: one for the OS (Win XP Home SP2) and one for programs. 1. Everytime I install a progarm components are installed on the C drive anyway. Mainly stuff that is pinned to the start menu. Does this have to be this way? Can I change it so that the Start menu reads from the same drive I install my programs into? 2. If not, can I repartition the drive to enlarge the partition that the OS is on without causing any problems? When I created the partitions I guess I made the OS partition too small. If I use Partition Magic can I resize the two partitions and not cause any complications? 3. Are there settings that can be changed to change where files are automatically saved? For example the favorites folder. Do they have to save on the C drive? Is it bad to change the dirve if it is possible?
I move to Win XP from Win 98 fairly recently. Will the Windows XP install disk run live off the CD? Or do you need a special type of Win XP install disk? If so, how do you get it to do so? Can I rely on it as a rescue disk? Anyone try the fax program that comes with Win XP? [do a help search "Fax", it tells you how to install it] I would like to know befoe I install it, last time I tried, with Win 98, it just caused problems. If it is not DOS, what is the command line that Win XP runs? Is there a more extensive command line avaiable for XP[third party program?]
say i press control+alt+delete, and want to close some of the programs/processes i have running... how do i know which ones are ok to close and which ones the computer needs to run? i use mcomputer to use photoshop, and i listen to music on winamp while i use photoshop. lately, after a few minutes of play, winamp starts getting really crackly sounding. i close it and restart it and then its fine for another few minutes?
1. what causes NTDLR error and how can i prevent NTDLR error from happening to me on a windows xp pro SP2 computer 2. i have a secondary hdd. when i formatted it it also installed another copy of windows on there. What all buttons do you use on Easy Cleaner, I just used the Unessessary button and clean files button, and cleard over 2 gigs of files! IE seems to be working A LOT better. Do you guys use the registry cleaner one? AND, I have comcast broadband right now, is DSL better? I thought DSL was faster and cheaper? Any opinions? 1. In Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs, there are loooooads of things that I can't un-install, and I have no idea what they are. Theres one called Director, one called Unload, Update, WebFldrs XP, WebReg, the list just goes on. I've used advanced unistaller pro, and it hasn't got them in there, but my pc's been goin really slow so I think these have something to do with it. Could somebody please help me???? Thanks
2. In task manager, theres a process called sdxztjw.exe, being run by Simon (me) and uses between 100 - 500 k memory. If i close it, then another comes, if i close that, another comes etc. I've gone in to WindowsSystem32, and deleted it from there, and another one comes etc. And I've deleted it from the registry, under run, and another comes. Could someone please help me???!!!
Since last time i got a huge spyware on my pc which kept installing spywares, then my pc have been quite. I managed so get rid of all spywares actually but theres still something that keeps making regkeys to make programs start up.. Everytime i delete those keys they just get made again! Sometimes my windows doesn't close.. It just "Freezes" at where it says "Windows are shutting down".. But it doesn't really shut down so i have to hold power button down until it shut down.. I dont like doing that!
1.I downloaded and re-installed my Real Player, and my video files (RM, RMVB, Quicktime Movie etc.) shows this picture as the icon when I view the whole folder under Thumbnails. How can I change them back to display the beginning scene of the video file when viewing the folder under Thumbnails? 2. Does this mean that I have 2 drives in my computer? C: and D:? What is D drive for? 3. I accidentally created a new folder inside C:WindowsRegistration and I can't delete it. Shows error in deleting the file everytime. How can I remove it?
Everytime I restart the computer, it makes me switch between 2 of the same OS's. There's a list that says: Windows XP SP2 Windows XP SP2 (boot screen) It makes me select one and gives me a 30 second time limit. This is a little annoying, so does anyone know if there's a way to remove this and auto-choose one of the two instead of asking me? Also, after windows loads, it brings me up to the User Sign-In screen. Thing is, I'm the only user that uses this computer and pressing my icon to load windows is a little time consuming. Lastly, everytime I load up windows, a "You still have files waiting to be written on your CD Drive" pops up. Whenever I click it, there are no files on there waiting to be written and it's been fairly annoying.
Limewire randomly starts up on my computer. It can be running fine and suddenly it'l start opening up. I've checked my settings for it and I dont see anything that would cause it to start like this. Any ideas? Even more mystifying is that over the last 2 weeks or so, if my computer is inactive for a fairly short period of time, I think 10 mins or maybe even less, it'll go back to the XP login screen. Thankfully from that screen it doesnt take that long to get back in, but the 30 secs or whatever it does take, all told, is quite annoying. I hate watching a movie and suddenly seeing it quit to that and having to just wait there all this time.Any advice?
During my recent move, My OS and application disk got shattered. I contacted the company that I bought the Computer from and they said I am out of luck. I am only really concerned with the OS and office. Is it illeagal to do so ? Is it possible to make the disks again ? If it is not illegal could some one tell me how or where to find a link to walk me through it?
I have got some questions, mostly minor, but questions nonetheless that have been stacking up over time. There aren't more than a few right now, but I'm sure some more will surface in the future. I am having consistency problems with every time I restart my computer. I have a toolbar on my Taskbar that lets me access my desktop, but every time I restart my computer, it doesn't stay there, and I have to enable it. The same goes for having the Autohide feature enabled for the Taskbar. ------- This question is similar to the above, but it's slightly different, as I will explain. I use the Windows TweakUI for a few things, and one of them is to automatically log into my Windows account since it's the only one. And when I turn that on, then restart, it works. When I restart again, it no longer works, and asks for my login stuff. Annoying! The icon for .zip files on my computer are no longer there... I tried using the "rebuild icons" thing in TweakUI and it does not seem to work. I have two hard drives installed on my computer. The secondary one, which I never use other than storage, is not always detected by my computer on start up. I have to restart a few times to get it to show up. I'm sort of worried that it's failing or something. I checked the connections inside and it all seems to be fine. Alright, I think that is about it for now. By the way, I use Windows XP Pro, SP2.
I'm wondering what the highest version of IE I can stick on a NT 4.0 box. I believe that the highest version of Direct X you can install with NT 4.0 is 3.0. I might be wrong though. Does anyone know of any reliable software firewalls that are still compatible with NT 4.0?
how much RAM does Windows XP support. Eventualy I am going to be building a new PC and I want to see how much I can max it out without over clocking it. Also has anyone purchased AMD's new quad core, if so how is it. what is the max amount of space you can have if you do a raid 0 config for the hdds?
I, like most people, have been running Windows XP for a long time now because I am a gamer/programmer...and the applications I use daily work well there. Or, at least, there was a time when this was true. I've had my machine for quite a while now...maybe 3 years or so...and XP has given me a lot more trouble than usual every time I reinstall. I don't know if the updates are making things worse, or if M$ just wants to add more and more 'MSspy-ad-ware' to it's OS...or what.
Now then...(most) griping aside.I just reformatted and am having some issues that have me considering giving it another wipe (which, in my case, is quite an undertaking). But, before I do that.I want to ask the pro's here their opinions on several things.
1) I want to tweak my system so that it will perform at maximum efficiency. Where can I find info on this? What are the most important tweaks/tricks? What are some personal recommendations (keeping in mind I am a gamer )? Perhaps not only limited to the OS, because I know my DSL/router could use some help as well .2) I've never had enough nerve to overclock my system, but since the 'new smell' has worn off of my system, I may want to give it a go. My board temperature runs between 25C - 30C and the CPU between 45C - 50C.Should I consider, given the temperatures, trying out OC'ing? What tools are the best for doing so? What parts should I focus on OC'ing? Where are my 'limits'? and finally...
3) As I said...I am a gamer and from time to time an intermediate programmer.I use several applications...like Dreamweaver, game software (most are DirectX to the best of my knowledge), After the recent bad tastes of Windows I have had, I am considering trying out Linux (Ubuntu) and running an emulator for anything that won't run otherwise. Is this a bad idea? What are the benefits/downfalls?
1.Is it possible for each user account to have a separate default Internet browser? 2.How do you install a program to make it available to only one user account?

OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6832116056 Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6837116193 Also what are the diferences between the basic an profesional versions? I was wondering if soemone might have an idea why Windows XP will say new programs have been installed when I my mouse points to the start button, yet, I have installed nothing. I have had repeatable alerts of remote computers trying to access my computer. I will get at least three alerts before the computer has been on a minute soemtimes. I will try to type and email and can get as many as 20 alerts/attempts within 15 min.
I have Norton firewall and my spyware shows nothing, I also, have all the latest security updates. Does anyone have an idea what might have changed that would cause such an increase. Is anyone having this many attempts? I have contacted Norton and was told how to add addresses to my block list, yet, they never bother to answer what might have changed to cause such a sudden increase. Most, I notice come from China. If anyone has any thoughts on this I am most interested and welcome any advice you might have.
1.The battery in my laptop ran completely down. When I recharged the battery and started, the computer asked me to login the opening screen now requires me to click on a box marked "Owner" -previously, it went straight to boot-up. How do I stop this screen from displaying? 2.When an e-mail message or an article in a newsgroup displays a URL, previously I could click on the URL, Internet Explorer would open and go to the URL. Now, when I click on a URL in either e-mail or newsgroup article, nothing happens.
I see two strangely named startup entries in msconfig. What are they? They are named with chinese characters or something like that. When I boot up the PC, I see a bar that seems to be like loading something. I never had it before. How do I stop making that appear and get the usual black screen before I see the Windows GUI? Could it be that I haven't optimized my PC for so long? How do I reset the window size of the "Favourites" explorer bar in Internet Explorer? How do I add Icons to the Internet Explorer toolbar? And How do I permanently remove Windows Messenger? In the msconfig utiliy, I have some services disabled and unchecked. Am I suppose untick the manual services?
my laptop is getting mighty slow, and i was thinking about doing a clean install of xp on it. That said, i don't want to go out and buy another copy of windows xp, so i was wondering if there's any way to basically re-install windows and get rid of everything without having to have a new cd-key. Also, could i do a clean install of windows and then call microsoft for a new key since it's the same computer running xp?
1.Could someone give me a suggestion/tips about doing backup? a.The good place for backup? b.How often I should do it? c.The good method for backup? 2.I also have a HD that I made two partition on it, one partition is NTFS and the other is FAT32. How I should backup that HD? 3.What is the filetype system of a CD/DVD?
my daughter has an older model sony vaio (pcg- fx220) running ms windows 2000 pro and is wanting to upgrade to xp. she purchased her upgrade software from her college vendor and they shipped her 2 discs. one is labeled ms windows xp professional with service pack 2 and the other is labeled ms windows xp professional x64 edition.
i am assuming the i should install the w xp pro with serv. pk 2 instead of the 64x version. in the back of my mind, there is some previously learned and nearly forgotten info regarding processors and hers is an older 750 pentium iii.
Due to a very successful attack I need to move my Outlook Express files to another Computer. Unfortunately, my search ability has been decimated on the originating computer by the attack.
1. How do I find the E-mails in Windows Explorer [they are present in Outlook Express but I can not find then in windows Explorer]?
2. How do I move them to the other computer [I can still burn CDs and DVDs]?
3. The receiving computer uses Windows XP Home and Outlook [not Express] Do I need to do anything additional or differently?
The problems started when my wife received an E-mail from her college [not really but that was what the e-mails address indicated] It was opened and; look out. It eliminated or disabled: Internet Access, Norton System Works [including virus protection] and Internet Security, and XPs Restore, Search and Help features. It also locked all of Norton from being reinstalled [eventually I was able to reinstall Norton including virus Protection, and Internet service]; However, I still have been unable to reinstall the Help and Restore features. In addition to the above Does anyone know how to get the computer back to normal without a total re-install of XP? BTW Do not open any emails that are warning you of Policy Violations, E-Mail Service termination and so on as my wife and I found out. The first ones came from my wifes university now they are coming from Verizon my ISP.
Today I noticed that what WAS my E drive is now called F and what was my F drive is now called G. I don't know how it happened, but it's wreaking havoc with Adobe Premiere because on all old projects I have to relocate all files on what were F that are now on G. It's also messing up my shortcuts.
