I'm posting this for a friend because he can't get online to ask himself.Whenever he double clicks on an icon, the program won't open. He tried clicking on the IE icon and got a about blank page that said page could not be displayed. He ran his Ad-aware and Antivirus but no virus was found.Ad-aware found a few problems but he cleaned them out.

I'm trying to clean up a friend's PC that had Antivirus XP on it. All his desktop icons got changed to the paint logo and the links for them are broken. Also, when I try to create a new desktop icon for an application such as McAfee virus scan, it gets the paint icon and when lauched I get the message: "C:Documents and SettingsCompaq_AdministratorDesktopmcvsshld.exe.lnk. Paint cannot read this file. This is not a valid bitmap file, or its format is not currently supported."

Now, after the cleaning activity as explained by techguys, everything seems going well. All programs do start without problems (through the start-menu or the quick-start taskbar), but there is a small drawback: my desktop screen shows only my wallpaper, there are no icons. The right-mouse click on the desktop also doesn't work (although the desktopsettings are accessible through the control panel). I use WinXP pro. what is wrong and how do I get the icons back on the screen?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI remember few days ago.. my kaspersky identified some system file as a trojan.. so it probably a misunderstanding when i was installing system mechanic. it got deleted.. and i have this automatic option to delete them after they are put in backup in kaspersky.
now whenever i open my pc, my desktop and taskbar and start menu,etc goes away after a few seconds! Now i rely on the task manager..
Several unwanted desktop icons appeared recently (I think they come via Search2000 when IE is used). They won't right-click for deletion, nor will they allow themselves to be drop-dragged to the recycle bin. They don't appear in the desktop icon list when using the desktop cleanup feature.

I can do a ctrl+alt+del and access the task manager but have no idea on how to restore my desktop. When I startup in safe mode all I get is a black screen.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI was given a Toshiba notebook and only told it doesn't work. It will boot into XP but all of the non system icons have the same generic icon. Non of the icons work (nothing happens when you click on them). Basically can't get into anything. Trying to run system restore from Run brings up the no program associated with this file message. Safe mode is the same and Last Good Config was also the same. I tried running system restore from Safe Mode with command prompt using %systemroot%system32estore strui.exe. which brings up an empty system restore box. Although it looks like it came with a XP CD, all that I have is a restore CD. One other thing that bothers me is that about once a minute what sounds like the system fan goes on for about 10 seconds. I don't mind using the restore CD(it's not my laptop or info that will be erased), but I would like to avoid that if possible.
View 10 Replies View RelatedDouble clicking on the shortcut icons on the desktop wont work. Though folders, mp3 files and likealikes work. Even .exe works.Only Shortcuts not working. Though on right clicking and opening, they work. One more thing is, when i go to start>>programs and click on ANY program for it to start, that also doesnt work. The start menu simply vanishes or say minimizes. Though, when i right click and open them, they work.Both these problems are since pretty long time.

Seems Microsoft dumped part of SP2 in my ad-remove programs but now I'm back to SP1 although there may be a conflict? Now using Microsoft "how to troubleshoot missing network connections icons in....XP" gets me to step 5...registering the dlls. Two I was able to register...netcfgx.dll and netman.dll.

SITUATION:
Last Night I noticed when I was editing that some of my avi exports were all distorted and fragmented... So i figured "I havent EVER ran defrag (stupid me) on this hard drive maybe I should defrag it" So I looked into a defrag program called "diskeeper" I defragged C: (windows drive) and attempted to defrag D:.... I came to my comp and discovered an error that just said failure with the drive or something... After that I could not access (D I restarted, diskcheck did not work, and I dont want to do system restore... I posted on another websites forum and someone said I probably went over the 137GB limit... I think when I went over the 137GB limit, it possibly overflowed over some kind of boot files or something that lets windows read the disk i dont know (not that techincal with computers)So i looked into that, and I have an ATA card... and Windows NO service pack XP pro... Ive heard things about having a 48 bit bios or something... And after installing WINDOWS XP SP1... I try to get on my computer and i load windows
On my HP laptop, I can not move any of the desktop icons. They snap back to original position when released.
"Auto Arrange" is not checked. I have tried with "Align to Grid" both on and off. "Lock Web Items on Desktop" is not checked.
When i was on the net i clicked save web page as to see what would happen. Now all my icons on my desktop look like they are highlighted when they are not.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI wanted to change icons on my desktop. so i was looking for the function, went into folder options, then to file types tab, I clicked on file folders, then on advanced. Didn't select anything, clicked ok. After that every time I click on a folder it would open in acdsee. So I went back there, couldn't find a setting to readjust it, then added a new command to open folders in explorer. Now each folder I click on opens in a new window.

He was cleaning his keyboard off and he must have hit some kind of key combination, because all his desktop icons disappeared except for the My Computer and Recycle Bin ones. I guess he had a bunch on there that he needed, but couldn't find them. They weren't in the Recycle Bin and a file search didn't turn any of them up.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI opened that stupid E-card virus I think. Now all i've been getting is tons of pop-ups. I read in a forum to just let it run it's course and eventually it would stop, or to do a bunch of stuff that I didn't understand. So, I ran all of my anti-virus' and ad aware and ccleaner and regcure and still I'm getting tons of popups but I was just going to be patient and let it run it's course. But now I keep getting this new message and when I close the message it ends up causing my taskbar and icons to go away. I was continually restarting my computer to get them back and thinking I would just not close the message in hopes that I could at least copy my documents over to another computer. I have not been able to do that so far and I'm freaking out. I use this computer for work. I am very new at this and this is my first post so please bear with me. I did read a few posts and realized that most people do ask for that Hijack This report thing, so I've done that and will post it next.

I have tried multiple ways and the only way to access programs is by task manager.I currently haven't got a HijackThis Log which I will upload a.s.a.p. There are also no viruses and no hardrive errors so I'm pretty stumped on what I should do.

View 4 Replies View RelatedAbout a week ago windows told me that it had "detected spyware" so began installing antispyware software. After this had completed, and I was told that I needed to spend the $24 to buy the software to rid me of all the various nasties the internet supplies, i deleted the software and had developed the problem of not being able to see my wallpaper. Since looking round I've found that it's now down the active desktop being disabled somewhere along the line, without my knowledge. Having gone through the largely useless and time consuming "help" that is given on the Microsoft help section, I've now discovered that, although i do have active desktop on me computer, i have no way of getting to it, turning it on, or even finding any trace of it. Can anyone help, as my desktop is now just blue with icons.
