There is some important information on drives. I would hate for that information to get into the wrong hands. I have a feeling the only way to be absolutely sure that that does not happen is to physically destroy the drives, but I wanted to make sure first. So, if I format them and install a new OS, could someone still access the data that was previously on the drives? And if so, is there anything I can do, other than destroy them, to prevent that?

Had a problem about a month ago with some things on here so i formatted the hdd and installed winxp pro. Was going ok for about a week then the error messages were non stop. Kept saying windows had to shut down because of a hardware problem, yet never did find out what it was. Anyways i did a total format and am trying to instal winxp again. I have a win98se boot disk. It gets half way through the installation then i get all kinds of error messages about files couldn't be loaded or files not found. Don't these files come from the cd?? it is a original cd that i have. some of the msg are: file i386halacpi.dll not found, syntax error in the .sif file and the list goes on then it says setup cannot continue.

I need to get my HDD reformatted with the help of a paid technician.Couple of weeks ago he used the quick format method & asked him if that would make any difference & he said really not.I have the doubts though. I kind of wonder why would Windows then give a choice if there really wasn’t any difference?

I do not know what the fish happen to my PC.When i clicked on my drive,a message appears which states:"D: is not accessible.Incorrect function."I did not remove anything other than those unwanted applications.I thought I could restore my drive D when I run system restore. To my horror, system restore returns a message stating that "Changes made to drive(s)D: after this point cannot be reversed because the drive was either excluded from system Restore monitoring,or was turned off or removed".I really do not want to lose all my important data in that drive D.Pls can anyone provide your expert advice.

I have 3 XP Home systems networked together. All can access the drive and directory shares of each other.I also have an XP Pro on the same network, and none of the XP Home systems can access the shares of the XP Pro system. Not even the Shared Documents folder.I've looked at the drive/directory Permissions and Security and can't find anything obviously wrong. So I tried enabling Simple File Sharing on the XP Pro system, and same thing. All of the XP Home systems are denied access to the XP Pro shares. What do I need to do to allow the XP Home systems to access the shares of the XP Pro system?

Domain has shared drive P: (Public)User can access drive via //servername/public or servername.domain.org/public and work out of the files there exactly as intended, with full access. She's actually made a shortcut on the desktop for it.Try mapping the drive however, and it say Access is Denied every time. Try to disconnect the drive and it tells you the files are in use (because they are, but not through the map). So to reiterate those two methods of network access I listed above have both been tried.

I have a hard disk (non-booting) that was formatted by windows 98. I put a new drive in the system and put xp pro on it. The drives show up in device manager, and on my computer, but when I attempt to access the
drive, it says "unformatted drive, do you want to format". I hit no,because I don't want to lose the info on it.

I receive the following message in Device Manager under the floppy drive: Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39). I have attempted to remove the drive and let XP recognize it and I have also tried uninstall and install of the driver both without success. I found similar hits to my problem through a google search and one had a solution for a CD rom drive problem from this forum.

I was hit by the hurricane when it was a category 1 hurricane and lost power for several days. During this time I had my computer off. When power finally came back on I turned on my computer, but even though I didn't lose power again the phase went up and down. When I tried to turn my computer on again I got a blue screen, and then I started getting an error message when it tried to load windows 2000.

Hi, I'm running Windows XP, and I've been having a particularly annoying problem with it. Every time someone is on an account on the computer the Internet works fine, then when that account is logged off and then another account is logged on the Internet no longer works, I have FireFox, Chrome, and Internet Explorer; and none of them work after this log off then log on sequence. The only way to fix the problem is to re-start the computer instead of logging off and then logging on to the new account when the computer reboots. This problem doesn't seem computer threatening at the moment but it is very annoying and I would really like to have this problem dealth with.

The problem occured about 2 weeks ago when i found that that my Mum's company mailroom website suddenly stopped being accesable. When I try to access it a ''this page cannot be displayed'' page comes up briefly and then is replaced by ''Dell search'' page. I have scanned my computer several times for any viruses and I have removed tempory files, cookies, history, data miners and everything else that my scans found. I have also de-fragged my computer. I have visited the windows support website but it didnt work

My home computer gets used by four different people, all of which, apart from me, have almost no idea what they're doing. So, to protect my music collection from accidental deletion etc. I used the user access feature of vista so that only my user account could access the folder that contains all the music... I now cannot access this folder from XP... the data is still there, I've done my maths with free space on drive, but XP reckons the folder is empty, and says. Quote: d: music is not accessible Access is denied when I double click it..

I have a 250GB Western Digital hard drive with a ~195GB partition formatted as FAT32. The partition is called "Documents" and has the letter C: assigned to it. The rest of the hard drive isn't formatted. The operating system (WinXP) is installed on a different hard drive.Since yesterday in My Computer or Explorer it's called "Local Disk C:" and whenever I click on it I get a box that says "The disk in drive C is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?". For two hours it came back and I backed up all the most important information but then the same problem came back again. I was able to see the contents of the partition through a few applications but not access it. My whole computer is working sluggish since this happened.
