I just just purchased a 100 Gb drive and cloned my old 60Gb with the 2 partitions into it. I swapped the 2, but windows doesnt boot properly. I can see the windows logo, and the blue screen with the second windows logo (the one right before asking you for username and password) and it just gets stuck there. Whats wrong with it? I read in a thread that the drive letters make a difference. Should I name my new operating system partition c? Can you please help? I use windows xp home edition.!
About a month ago I decided to get a much bigger hard drive (500GB) but theres no way I have time to reinstall everything so I decided to clone my existing hard drive, I tried acronis and the clone went superfast and put everything onto a single partition the full size of the new disk - when I tried to boot up with the disk, it didnt boot. It got to the pale blue screen that usually says 'welcome' but instead it had a small windows XP logo and that was it, it didnt go any further. I contacted support and they were no help so last night I tried another free software hdclone - it took about 6 hours but I actually managed to boot up from the new disk - but the new drive had a single partition the exact same size as the old one and the rest was unused space - no problem
I didnt know there was such a thing as a free forum full of clever IT people... Fabulous But I guess you find these things out when you need to Here is the short version of my problem... if a fuller version is needed, just let me know ! Ive had problems with my computer for a while and decided that it was time for a bit of a spring clean to try to get rid of some og the annoying little error messages etc. The main problem was that I couldnt install the Service Pack 2. So I tried to do the Smart Restore and then everything went down hill from there Now I cant get into Windows at all... Ive installed it, but it appears to be on the H Drive and the computer is set to start in the C drive, so when it tries to start, it tells me to install Windows, but theres not enough room on C... not because theres too much on there, but the C drive is just not large enough to have Windows on it ! When I start the computer in BIOS, Im not given the option to start in H...
I am using a new Windows XP home edition. i wanted to know how do i remove the two options i get before booting my system 1. Start Windows With Boot screen And 2. Start Windows Normally (Although Both Boot up similarly)
I currently have xp pro loaded on my computer but it was a bad install and i want to install xp home which i like a bit more. When i go to install xp home, it won't let me because it automatically assumes i want to upgrade and i can't choose a clean install. I can't boot from my cd rom so i can't go through bios.
I have XP Media Center Edition 2002 or 2005 (not sure which) edition on a dell desktop and I have problems with Media Edition so I'd like to go to plain XP home edition. If I buy and run the XP Home upgrade, will that work on top of MCE?
I recently received a laptop that someone needs me to fix. The problem is that it seems at some point that some kind of update was interrupted during the process and the system will not load unless a windows xp professional edition disk is inserted to complete the update. I also cannot get it to start in safe mode. Unfortunately, I only have a home edition disk. Can I reformat XP pro with a home edition disk? If not, are there any other options?
I am cloning my existing hard drive in my laptop (sata) to an external hard drive (pata) in preparation for installing a new larger hard drive (sata)in the laptop. Can I, or how do I transfer the cloned data from the external (pata) to the new internal hard drive (sata)? Thanks in advance and I apoligize if this is a rudimentary question as this is my first time attempting something like this.
I used HDClone to clone a 10 GB to a 40 GB disk. The program is very simple dealing with Source and Target, bit to bit copy. I left the option bit to bit copy unchecked in order to leave the recommended setting. After finishing this I connected the cloned drive to the master connector and removed the original disk from the system. I already thought it wouldn't let me boot to XP because it's a different disk. After the error I restarted booting the XP-Disk. I tried repairing using bootcfg /add. It found the Windows installation and I could add it. But after the restart, same again:Error loading operating system. So, what could be the reason. Partition not set to active? MBR? Should I make a bit to bit copy?
I have Windows XP home edition already installed on my system and I for some reasons I want to reinstall them on a different hard drive (I have 2 IDE drives). It is very important that my initial windows setup, the one I am running on now, will be working after the new installation too. Is that possible?
i have a question about the Home edition sp2, as i known, this version only can support HT with single core, but now i face a problem is that it can support dual core(Yohan) , so about this case, does the Home edition really support dual core in one package? or just it cannot support dual core with individual package?
What is the BEST Registry Cleaner out there? Does Microsoft have one we can download for free? Or do they recommend one? OTHERWISE what's the BEST one out there?
Anyway, when upgrading from Windows XP Home Edition to Windows XP Pro earliler this week, everything seemed to work fine and all the program icons I had from Windows XP Home appeared on the XP Pro desktop. However, my Internet Broadband/Dial-Up connection dissapeared from 'Network Connections' and I therefore could not connect to the internet, even though the ISP ('BT Broadband' - I'm based in the UK in case you wonder who BT are) icon remained on my desktop and their software appeared in Programs.
When I contacted my ISP they claimed this is a problem with Windows XP upgrade to Pro and I should contact Microsoft Support. Is this true?
Anyway, I've had to resort to doing a clean install of Windows XP Home again now in order to get back on the internet with my Broadband internet and installing my ISP's USM Modem software all over again. It worked, but still want to upgrade to XP Pro.
Any ideas on how this 'problem' can be resovled. Don't want to have to do a clean install again and again. Also, is It this a common problem with upgrading to Windows XP Pro from Windows XP Home as my ISP claim ?
i'm in the process of upgrading my PC and i want to get Windows XP, now, i have two questions, i have been told that Windows XP needs 4.5GB of space to install, this seems like an insane amount, and as i seem to only have 2.0GB available, not achievable, however, if this is not true, and i can install it, is the Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade with SP2 what i need, as it says upgrade, does it mean upgrade from ME to XP? As that is what i have, or is it an upgrade from SP1 to SP2? Or do i need Windows XP Home Edition with SP2? Or should i get SP1? This is, however, if i have enough memory
I am using Windows XP Home Edition. Should I download & install the windows updates? There are so many of them, and I never know which ones I need. I never updated before because I only had a 7GB HD & it took up too much space. I now have a bigger computer & just want to know from the experts.
Someone told me to do a back up, go to tools, options and click on Backup. I have XP home edition. How can I get this feature? The icon is "perplexed" which I often am when trying to hunt things down.

I have just recently reinstalled everything on my laptop, but Ive noticed when I click on start/turn-off-computer/restart - the computer will not shut down by itself. I have to manually hold the button down, then it starts up again when I release it.

I just completed a fresh install of windows xp home edition. The computer starts up in safe mode, but not in normal mode. When I try to start in normal mode, it goes to the windows xp loading screen with the green loading bar and then goes blank, with my moniter blinking on and off. a checkdisk in safe mode returns no errors. the only things plugged into the motherboard are my cd drive and a video card.
I have xp sp2 installed with dual boot to Ubuntu on a toshiba a15-s127. I only have an SP1 disk. Can I use an XP Media center sp2 rollup to repair the MBR and then delete the ubuntu partition? I read the section on making an sp2 repair disk out of a sp1 disk but that seems like more work than reinstalling and updating the sp1 system.
My computer originally had windows xp home edition put on it, and i still have the certificate of authenticity that has my product key on it.I never got the windows cd with the computer so i downloaded a copy off the net and installed it, Its Windows XP Home Edition SP2.When i put in my product key now it says its invalid, is that because its SP2 instead of plain Home Edition? If so, is there a way to uninstall sp2 and sp1 so its just plain home edition so i can register it?and if not, is it even possible to get it registered with my old key if i contact microsoft? For free proffered, dont really feel like paying for the same thing twice.
I had windows SP2 on my Compaq Presario SR1123WM before it crashed and went back to California for repair.I still have the CD to install the program. But it will not install, either from download from microsoft, or from the CD.I get an error message " Extraction failed.(ccyclic redundancy check)" And a few minutes later, I get the screen, " SP2 did not install," or some such thing. Anyway, I have tried 14 times to install this thing, but Microsoft tells me that Compaq is responsible, because it was OEM installed.
I am using Windows XP Home edition. I want to use IIS and Windows XP Home edition does not include IIS.I'm trying to upgrade from XP home edition to XP Professional. I recently purchased a computer with windowsxp Home edition. I do not have microsoftworks of any kind on my computer. Does windows xp not come with it any more?
I have had my computer for almost two years and ever so often I like to wipe out the hard drive and start over from scratch. I have made a list of programs to make sure I can put them back on and I also have my entire hard drive backed up on an external hard drive so I can transfer my important files back over. My question is what all do I need to get the system to work again. I have the Win XP Home instalation disk as well as the driver disk from dell. Will the computer automaticaly start using the two CD drives and 3.5 drive or do I need drivers for them as well? Sorry if this is a rookie question. I just want to make sure once I wipe it out I am all set to get it back up and running. The reason I decided to do this now is that I have a few spyware and viruses that I am having trouble getting off. They arnt doing anything because of my firewall and other settings. I just want to wipe it off and start over with a clean slate.
