Can't Hear Sound Effects In Many Games
Jul 30, 2010
Can't hear sound effects in many games (and some system sounds), but I can listen to music and background sounds.Dxdiag sound diagnostics:DirectSound test results: Failure at step 20 (User verification of hardware): HRESULT = 0x00000000 (error code) (it pops up after the 1st hardware buffer test)I searched on google, tried everything.

I can not get the usual sound effects ("empty recycle bin", "Start Windows",
"Exit Windows" etc.In the Control Panel, "Sounds and Audio Devices Properties", under the "Sound"tab, the Sound Scheme shown is "Windows Default".If I go to the "Program Event", the above (and other) events have sounds associated with them, and give the proper sound."wav", "mid" and "MP3" files play OK using Windows Media Player.
Clips from News Networks (which include audio and video) play OK

It's time for another cosmetic XP tweaking question. In the out-of-the-box install, Windows XP on my notebook PC had this nifty feature I loved -- closing the lid to suspend operation, then opening it back up and hitting the power button to resume. It played this two-note piano melody when I did so, and then a more upbeat tune when I clicked on my avatar icon to get back to my desktop.I've since reinstalled XP several times. Right now it does the exact same thing that it used to, but without the cheerful piano sounds. How can I get them to come back? Kind of a silly question, I know, but they really did brighten my day.

I'm having intermittent sound issues. This is a newly-built computer. It seems that the sound I can't hear are Windows sounds or on the internet. Windows media player is playing, but I'm not hearing anything. I've checked my speakers and sound card. If I put a CD or DVD in, I hear sound or if I play the TV.

i recently installed a mic on my laptop (Toughbook CF-29) and I can hear myself/sounds from the mic through the speaker on my laptop, but xp sound recorder and/or Audacity won't record the sounds going through the mic/speakers. I have tried messing about with advanced audio properties, but can't figure this out.

1. Whenever I play a game on my machine (such as Zuma, Rocket Mania), I get "system has encountered a problem" errors or blue screen crashes. There is no consistency in the errors that I or my husband can see.
I have:
1. downloaded and reinstalled Audio and Video drivers (many times), including reverting backwards
2. run disc clean, System Mechanics clutter clean, spybot, internet clean--if I do these and then boot, the games will run (sometimes).
3. deleted and physically relocated the page file (which is set to max--4096)
4. done full virus scan, registry clean, adscan---my machine is so clean it squeeks
2. Keyboard is freezing when I'm typing (either online or off--doesn't matter which program either). The display stops and I can keep typing. After maybe 10 seconds, the screen catches up. I have deleted and reinstalled my keyboard.
3. I have lost my system sound but have sound on all games (except one).

I have installed a copy of office 97 in my newer computer that is operating WinXP home SP1. The program appears to work correctly, but it effects the monitor resolution.Everytime I use a component of Office 97, like MS word, the screen goes blank for a second and then comes back , but the resolution is now operating at 8 bit instead of 16 or 32.

I've installed some screensavers lately to my PC. Before I actually installed them, I looked at them in preview mode. In preview mode, the transition effects work, but when I actually install the screen saver, the transition effects are getting "cutoff" and go to the next slide immediately. What would be causing this? I've downloaded these same screensavers to my son's PC with no problem, but on my faster Athlon 64 3200+, Asus A8N-SLI deluxe motherboard, 1 gig of ram, the transition effects are being "cut off" as I've said

Windows makes it possible for you to tweak your visual experience by turning on and off various visual effects.- Open up the control panel.- Go under system and click on the advanced tab.- Click settings under Performance options. You can now change various graphical effects (mainly animations and shadows) by checking/unchecking the individual boxes.

I am confused by the wording of the warning on the MS site, http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;322756.
"The actions that this Guided Help performs cannot be undone after Guided Help is finished."
What exactly cannot be undone? The installation of the Guide? Surely it would not affect System Restore.

i normally run on a linspire pre-loaded machine, but due to the heatsink on its way out have been using my secondary backup windows machine: http://littlurl.com/aw9rw there has been no issue for a while, however about 2 weeks going into 3 now.i've not been able to hear any sounds out of my speakers (Internet, cnn news, etc.)except if i used windows media player, cd's and any internal/preloaded sounds worked fine, as well as any 'testing'no yellow ! or errors were seen, or are seen currently.i began to muck about in the system files, the ultimate troubleshooter is an awesome program.and ended up tossing the system restore disks in.which seemed to just place another load of the os onto the hd.as a simple glance into the file system shows an owner and fred flintstone -(previous admin i was working under) besides the 'new' addition of mine.is it possible to have overlapping or multiple layers of an os on the same hd like this?i have sound only through wmp still.have downloaded and burned a copy of gparted to facilitate a clean sweep of the hd if needed to do a fresh/clean install.

I have Windows XP Pro. Realtek HD Audio sound card. For some really odd reason all of the sudden I can't hear the guitar playing on some of my songs. I can hear everything else playing but the guitar is drowned out and sounds very very low compared to the other songs and I really don't know what the problem could be. I have tried different drivers for my sound card all with the same results. Anyone know the problem or a possible solution?
