New To Shared Folders - Hard Drive For Music
Aug 19, 2006
I set up a shared folder on my hard drive for music that my daughter can listen to from her computer. Everything is fine, she can play the music with no problem. I wanted to hear a song, couldn't remember where or what it was named so I did a search for the song and surprisingly, the windows search returned three results for the song I wanted to hear. One song is in my music folder, and the other two songs are shown in the same folder. Here is an abbreviated search result for this one song:

A friend copied a bunch of music to my USB Western Digital HD. When I turn the drive on it goes into autoplay mode scanning the entire drive for content. Once done it will work fine the first time I try to access it, but then it loses communication and won't recognize the drive. I'm running XP Pro.

Help. I've installed a 2nd hard drive (windows XP). Everything went
smoothly, however, when I was prompted to copy all files over to the
new drive, I opted not to do so, not realizing that would cause me to
not be able to install programs on that drive. Now my new drive is
just used for storing music, pictures and movies. Please tell me what
I'd need to do so I can install programs on that drive. Thanks

I have this idea however I don't know if you can do it. What i want to do is to make my Hard Disk Drive as my My Music folder: Whenever you click or go into My Music, it will act as a shortcut and head straight to the Hard Disk Drive. The reason for this is so I have a Hard Disk Drive full of music while my original HDD has all the other stuff. Also My Music is a special windows folder so I would like to keep that if possible when doing this.

I'm not sure what settings I need to tweak, but I'm sure someone here as experienced this and might know. I have a desktop and a laptop, both running XP (desktop XP Home SP2, laptop XP Media Center SP2). Both systems are running ZoneAlarm firewall and both are current and set up properly for my network and for file sharing. I have file sharing/print sharing set up, and have no problems sharing files both ways...except... On both systems, I have "My Documents" shared, with both boxes check to "Share this folder on the network" and "Allow network users to change my files".

My daughter's HP dv2000t notebook computer had a motherboard crash, apparently (won't turn on). I took the hard drive out and put it into a NexStar-3 USB drive enclosure to try to salvage the iTunes and documents. The folders all show up, but when I try to access her user directory, it says that it is "empty". The properties for the hard drive also say that it the drive is almost full, so the data is all there...somewhere.Is there some kind of security that is tying the user directory to my daughter's computer and dissallowing me to tread her files on another computer? I can see how this would be a good feature if it was stolen, but when I send it back to HP for repairs, they say that they will restore the hard drive to its original condition and wipe out her investment in music, etc.

Am trying to set up a network with xp Home edition. I am curious about a couple of things. What is the difference in copying verses moving a file to the shared document folder? I would thing that by copying it, one is "duplicating" it and thereby using up resources. IF that is the case, when you access a file and make changes, are the changes saved to both places?

but i got a music folder with close to 100 seperate artist folders inside....all of which contain mp3's from various artists. (About 1200 mp3 files all inside these 100 folders...all inside 1 folder if that makes any sense)I'm thinking about moving all those mp3's outside there folders so that i have just one continuous stream of mp3's. Basically i want just my mp3's inside the main folder without their individual artist folder.

I am having a system with XP Pro x64 with multiple shared folders. Here is the setup. I have about 10 users (1 Admin account, 9 Limited accounts). I have created 10 folders for each User and modified them as shared folders with each user having access to their respective folders ONLY while the Admin account will have access to all folders. I have disabled 'Simple File Sharing', switched off Guest Account. Now I can view this system on other systems on the n/w. But the problem is, if I map a shared folder on one system, I was not able to map anymore on other systems and it gives error, 'the system can not accept multiple connections' in those lines.

this problem is a little tricky to explain.I have 2 computers (A and B) on a home network, connected through a router and hard-wired with Cat5 cable. They are both running Windows XP Pro SP3 and file/print sharing is turned on. Simple file sharing is turned on.Both computers can Ping each other successfully. Both computers can "Net View" each other successfully. Both computers can see the other's shared folders in My Network Places.Computer A can access the shared folders on Computer B and transfer files, etc.

I have a new pc freshly installed with XP SP3. I used it as a server, I shared the two harddrives and mapped them as drive F and G on the network. The sharing and mapping is successfull, however, after a few minutes of being started (or after the pc has been restarted), the sahred folders and harddrives were self-disconnected for unknown reasons. My colleage timed it, and the sharing lasts only 15 minutes after restart then it is disonnected from the network. When i say disconnected - i mean i can't be seen from other PC's connected to the network, i need to restart the pc (again and again) in order for the harddrive and folder sharing is restored. I can say it is disconnected because the sharing icon (a hand with a disk drive on the palm) disappears and other PC's cannot access it.

Building a new network of 6 boxes. All using WinXP Pro SP3.Yesterday I created a few shared folders - and they work fine all the other machines can access them. Installed a bunch of new software on the same main machine today also had a BIOS/registry/diskcheck issue - but everything seems fine now . EXCEPT, any folders I create as shared folders, while they show up on the other machines - all get the "can't be accessed permission denied" type of error message. The shares I created yesterday still work, they can be accessed, its just any new ones I create can not.simple file sharing is off, I edited the reg key to all anonymous connections, I added the NETWORK as a group allowed to access the new shares - but nothing works.

I have simple file sharing disabled. When I try to access the shared folder I get the following error message:Quote: \CATHYTemp is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.Access is denied. Is there a way (on XP), to have password security on shared folders? We have a "backup server," which is nothing more then a workstation with Windows ME, that our users store files on. I have an XP machine with a 300gb HD that I would like to use, but I absolutely have to be able to have passwords on the shared

The hidden share is still enabled on the other machine. I go to explorer and type in \PCnamec:$ and I get a message saying that I need to check my spelling. I am going to replace the hard drive, it's time for that anyway. I have the old hard drive connected to another computer as a second drive. I can see the file structure on the drive, but I can't see the files and folders in My Documents for my old profile. How can I access those files adn copy them to the good drive?
