View 8 Repliesi reinstalled windows xp and now i have missing drivers and since i have no cd because i got pc from a friend and he went away i dont know what to do. in device manager under other devices Ethernet controller,multimedia audio controller, pc i simple communications controller, video controller and video controller (vga compatible) all show as yellow i'm using intel pentium 4 530. motherboard: Dell inc 0g5611 .can't get any info on drives because they show up as unknown. is there some way i can get the drives from somewhere?
View 3 Replies View RelatedSince installing XP on my old desktop (Cyrix 233MHz based and not much RAM) it has become slow and gradually got slower and slower until it is now almost unusable.I have never been a fan of defragging and when I rebuilt this PC I didn't partition my drives, so defragging would be time - consuming. Although I am careful to ensure temporary files, etc. get purged I suppose that the inevitable writing / rewriting of the swap file, etc. has probably caused a lot of fragmentation.Can I re-partition the drives (I have two physical drives) and create separate partitions for the swap file, temporary files, programs, the OS and my data without having to re-install WinXP?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have setup a wireless network between two computers in my office and have installed some software that will automatically backup folders on each of the two computers.It work by backing up certain folders on computer 1 to the hard disk on computer 2 and vice versa.I also have a program installed on both computers that uses the data on computer 1.simplify the process of locating the data on my network I have created virtual drives using the Map Network Drives function in Windows. However; if I start up my computer and open these programs - they can not find the drives, I have to open My Computer first and double click on the drives before the programs will read from them. I am guessing that for some reason Windows is not connecting to these drives, even though I have set them to "reconnect at logon".
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed the program registery fix and i believe it has caused my Cd and DVD drives or the paths to these drives to be deleted from windows as they do not show up in my computer. I have tried the options in the following list but none of them have helped me, i'm really stuck but i can't fix the problem.
- I've tried deleting the upper and lower filters but they are not in the selected registery.
- I've tried a system restore but i can't go back to a previous point before the registery fix install.
- I've tried unplugging the leads and restaring but this didn't help.
- I've tried microsoft guided help but it couldn't find the upper and lower filters.
- i beleive they are still listed in my bios but don't know exactly what i'm looking for when in bios.
I don't know where to go from here, i also run alcohol 120% a virtual drive software and the registery fix has had no affected on these drives but i'm wondering if this maybe why the program registery fix deleted my actual drives becasue of the virtual drives and replaced the paths to my actual drives but i'm not sure it's just a guess. I've deleted the virtual drives and tried the steps above but i've had no luck.
My operating system is Windows XP Pro. As of yesterday all was fine, I even burned a DVD. Today "My Computer" isn't even showing my DVD/CD recorder, only showing Drive A: 3.5 Floppy. It started when I downloaded (I think) WindowsBlinds, just wanted to do some color changes. Well when I installed it, Norton came up with a Trojan. Norton Quarantined or deleted it and said no more further actions required. The install finished (windowblinds) and I tried a couple different skins and decided to uninstall it. I have my Windows format disc and I want to create another partition with it. I tried to create one, but it said something like "You have no more space to create another partition because you used up all your space on your Windows primary partition". See, when I reformatted my computer a while back I just created 1 partition for Windows and applied all the space onto that partition.
If there is a way I could remove some space off of my Windows primary partition and create another partition with the space I removed. I want to do this so I can put general things in my other partition such as documents, music, etc. and just leave the other partition for Windows and programs.
What are the steps needed to access one of my partitions, delete it, then use 1/2 the space and apply to system drive and the other 1/2 to another partition?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI bought a new computer.It appears to have been partitioned into a NTFS format and FAT32 format.The default drive for my documents & my pictures etc is the NTFS which I have been using happily. It is Media Centre Edition so I also have a few large files (>4GB) - though I dont keep them long term.NTFS partition has fulled up - but I cant move my large files to other partition to free up space
I've done a little bit of reading but my question is "Should I reformat the FAT32 to make it more of use to me?".I cant really see the need arising to access older OS files, except .JPG's (photo's I had on my old Windows ME Comp) or "Should I move all my smaller files (documents and photo's) to the FAT32 partition and use the NTFS drive for the bigger files?"

I have 5 internal HDD's and 2 external USB drives, I also have 2 DVD R/RW +- Dual Density drives, a Zip 250 and an Orb 2GB drive. So far this year I have had to reinstall my Windows like 8 times and done about 4 Windows repairs! Each time I seem to get 4 extra removable drives added to my system. In Disk Manager they are listed as "Generic STORAGE DEVICE USB Device", I have changed Device Usage to Do Not use this device (disable) and also I have uninstalled each device. Unfortunately, each time I restart the computer, they come back, shifting other drives to another drive letter.
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy existing C: drive. First I was getting the "Error 983" error. Then I un-installed SP2 which was causing a gang of problems, freezing programs for a couple mins mostly. After I got it uninstalled I did a disk defrag, then a chkdsk /f. Now I have partitioned the drive using PM8 again and this time after the reboot it is telling me it is completed but once Windows XP reboots there is no new partition.
Im trying to install Suse Linux 9.0. But I really want to have 2 new partitions, one for Suse, and the other as a back up.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI had perfectly working PC with XP Pro installed on a 160Gb Maxtor HDD.For no reason I error checked the hard drive, which the system did after rebooting, at the end of the test the system rebooted and announced that there was a error on the boot and boot.ini.Useing XP Emergency (on disk) I tried fixmbr which did nothing then I tried Fixboot. XP found the drive identified it as FAT and said that it was successfully fixed.The drive was FAT and is now unusable.Partition Magic sees it as a FAT drive as does XP when I switched the HDD into another machine.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI reinstalled my OS several months ago, and decided that I might want a dual boot in the future. I already had an old, smaller drive in the machine that's labeled the c: drive.
Reading one time that for security purposes it's good to have your OS on a drive other than C:, I decided to not alter the drive lettering.
I then partitioned a new internal hard drive into several logical drives. I formatted the D: partition as a Dos fat32 partition and the rest as NFTS partitions. Somehow, I allowed the D: partition to be the primary partition, while the E: partition which contains the Win 2000 Pro OS Winnt directory is a logical drive.
When I just checked disk management, I noticed that not only is boot.ini on the D: Dos partition, but so is ntldr along with the following Dos setup files:
ndetect.com
arcsetup.exe
arcldr.exe
I'm running Xp Pro SP2 & I need to redo the system. I have 2 Samsung 80gb hard drives but only one is currently in use.

To reformat my computer now and i downloaded all the files i'd need to reformat and compressed them into a single rar file to put onto my d drive.

I've just resized a partition on my main physical drive, and the OS sees the adjacent partition as unfromatted.
I'm using Partition magic pro 7 and WinXp pro.
The partition I resized is the primary OS partition which is formatted as NTFS, the adjacent partition is FAT32. How can I get XP to recognise the FAT32 partition again?
I decided to try Linux. 'Ubuntu' was my type selection. After trying by running off a CD I then decided that I would pick up some partitioning software like 'Partition Magic' or some software along that line to do the partition. But somewhere(s) I read that virtual or software partitions are less then a good idea for reasons I don't recall at the moment.
Is that true? If so, why and/or to what extent?
Is it possible to recover data from an external HD that I accidently deleted the partition and created a new one I just got a "new" computer - it's actualy a hand-me-down that I was trying to do a clean install of Windows XP on. I booted it up with the XP disk in the CD drive, and thought I was telling it to delete the existing partition and create a new one on the C: drive, but I didn't realize that it was also recognizing the external drive, which was already plugged into a USB port (why I even went ahead and plugged it in I don't know - that was stupid mistake It was the first one listed, and I thought it was telling me that there were two partitions on the internal drive, not two drives I also didn't pay attention to the size it was telling me the drive was (stupid mistake #2), I just told it to create a partition with the maximum possible size
View 4 Replies View RelatedI work for a fire department and they have Desktop Authority map certain network drives when they login. For some reason, DTA will map the drives when they login, and everything works fine, but after an hour or two, they lose connectivity to that drive and are no longer able to access it. I know this is very vague, but has anyone had this problem?BTW, I just recently upgraded from NT 4.0 to Server 2003 Standard, and we've had tons of other little problems with permissions and the like. Is this the cause of the dissapearing drives?

I tried with the XP cd and it gave me all these options that I don't understand.So, I finally just put the cd in and installed. Then I had problems connecting with a cable modem (yellow exclamation marks). I don't think I did it right to begin with anyway because it was asking me where on the drive to install. I'd like to just wipe EVERYTHING out and then reinstall.

I chose repair. Every thing goes through and then through again and then through again - it keeps reinstalling XP. I've tried taking the CD out but then I get the XP splash screen and a message that I need to complete the install.

It is running 32bit XP Pro, I have a RAID 0 which my OS and Programs are on, a RAID 1 that my files/data are kept on, and a backup HD that I just keep whacking backups over to. The problem started a few weeks ago, when Adobe Acrobat started having weird launch problems, to the point where I ended up deleting it, as the only part of Creative Suite CS4 that I don't really use as of now. I can't 100% remember the error, as figured I'd come back to it at a later date.
Next thing to happen, a week or so later, was that iTunes stops working after every turn off / turn on, or restart. i.e. iTunes is set up, all updated and working fine, until I turn my computer off. When I turn it back on again it hunts for some setup file, then says it can't find it, and refuses to open. I have to delete iTunes via Add/Remove, then install it again. At this point, on first opening it, all my music and settings are there fine, but once it's been turned off again same problem. This is a real pain in the *** even more so than usual as I have an iPhone now, so backing up is taking a while each week.Finally (I think), Office is doing a similar thing - it has been installed since first building the PC and working fine, but now each time I open any Office program after a restart it goes through some stage of installation again, and asks me to to activate it over the internet, yet again.
I don't think I've installed any new programs, bar program updates, and it just suddenly happened over a couple of weeks. It was working fine for a few months beforehand.I am relatively PC aware, but a long long way from expert, so have no idea where this problem is coming from - which has made Googling it impossible! It's like it forgets all its setup info at startup or shutdown, and has to start over again. NB, my AVG anti-virus is up to date and running Malware Bytes shows a clean system. Oh, that reminds me, I also had to turn off XP monitoring of my anti-virus, as around the same point as all this started XP started telling me it wasn't turned on or up to date, but it was running perfectly.
