Scaling Screen Smaller Than 100%?
Jan 7, 2013
Yesterday I installed the Nvidea driver for my Geforce 210 (desktop resize and scaling options) in Windows 8. After the update, my screen flickering black. System restore and it still works again.
Now I have a problem with the scaling of the screen, because the corners are not visible at my screen, and I want to retain my recommended and native screen resolution, to avoid a blurry screen.
Are there possibilities in Windows without the NVIDIA tool, to scale mij screen smaller than 100 percent ( the Windows tool make text smaller or larger will only work ABOVE 100%, and not smaller).

I have an Asus Zenbook Infinity, and I have run into an issue that I cannot seem to solve. It came with windows 8, but I have upgraded it to windows 8.1. The problem exists with both operating systems.
Whenever the lid is shut and the computer is allowed to go to sleep for an extended period of time, the start screen scales really small upon waking up. I have attached a picture of what I mean.

Is there any way to disable scrolling on the start screen or change the tile scaling by a small amount? I've got a 1680x1050 monitor and when there's 10 medium sized tiles across the screen, it activates the scroll bar, but there's no need for the scroll bar as all the tiles fit on the screen fine and scrolling only shifts them by a few pixels.
How to change the number of rows and a scaling tool that didn't work.

I have a relatively new installation of windows 8 with just a few programs installed. Problem is my new SSD is smaller than the existing drive. Using the tutorials on this site, can I just shrink the volume of my existing HDD partition before creating the image to recover from?

This occurs especially during games, my native resolution is 1366x768 but whenever I choose a lower resolution than that in games, the size of the game on the screen becomes smaller than my laptop's display/screen (15.6"). Why does this happen? Is it a laptop issue only? My older laptop had the same problem.
PS: I have the latest graphics drivers.

My "Change the size of all items" is set to smaller. This makes everything appear fine. However whenever I restart the PC, or turn on the PC, all of the desktop programs and cursor are incorrect (ie. everything bigger than it should be) on my left hand monitor. Changing the main display, or changing the resolution back and fro fixes the problem, but gets annoying after a while.

So I upgraded to Windows 8.1 on my Toshiba Satellite P75-A7200 laptop. I was previously running Windows 8, 64 bit and primarily just using the Desktop mode. I immediately noticed that the 1920x1080 resolution on Windows 8.1 made everything 10-15% smaller.
Ultimately I decided to refresh back to Windows 8, but the resolution issues remained. I've tried scaling to 125% but that's too large.

I am running Win 8.1 on a Yoga 2 Pro convertible laptop with a 3200 x 1800 res screen. Although my DPI scaling is set to 250%, the Modern UI tiles and text (Start screen) are still too small. In addition, many of the apps show text that is too small, as well.
This Eightforums article showed a terrific registry hack to adjust this in Windows 8. Unfortunately, the article warns that it does not work in Windows 8.1.
Any way to increase the text size of the Modern UI? As it is right now, it's unusable.

So I have a high res display on my laptop and the File Explorer looks like the fuzzy poop you get. Usually you right click the app in the task bar, then right click the name, click compat tab, and then disable dpi scaling, but the compat tab is missing for some reason for File Explorer and only that app. So it looks fuzzy and crappy.

I currently have a two monitor set up.
On boot up the left monitor (desktop only, metro is fine) has incorrect DPI scalling, where some items appear large and blurry. This includes the menus (eg explorer), desktop programs and the cursor. The taskbar and metro interfaces are fine.
Changing any graphics settings fixes the problem - eg. if I change the main monitor and change back the problem goes away. Equally, changing resolution and changing back fixes the issue. I've only ever had the problem with 8.1. I fixed the problem/it went away after a while, but since doing a reformat the problem is back.
I have changed the setting in text size and other items, unchecking the "let me choose one scaling level...." and have put the slider on "smaller". In PC settings, the DPI is set to smaller (but this is for the metro interface).

I use Windows 8 on a rMBP, but frequently use an external monitor that's 1080p. Since it scales 200% for the HiDPI of the rMBP, it's way too big on the external. Is there a way I can have it scale only the internal monitor, and leave the external one at 100%?

Asus Zenbook ux301LA, i5 Haswell, Intel graphics HD4400, Win 8.1 x64, 2560x1440 display. It came with Win 8, I updated to 8.1. After wake from sleep the scaling is way off, everything is tiny. So I can't use sleep, must do a full shutdown and restart to get back to normal resolution. Asus does not list any graphics drivers for 8.1, only 8. So I got a generic Intel HD graphics driver update from Intel but it didn't fix the issue.
The other strange thing is that it is time dependent. IOW if I wake it soon after I put it to sleep it restores to the correct resolution state. But if I wait longer it doesn't. I put it to sleep and woke it up multiple times and it seems like the change happens after it has been sleeping for about an hour... although I can't say for sure it is always exactly on that schedule. What could be changing in the system while asleep that would do this?
In a way this isn't a big deal since this thing boots up from full shutdown almost as fast as from sleep. But I had intended to use sleep without a password so I don't have to constantly enter that while home, but keep the password on full start up.

have an HP Envy Touchsmart 15t-j100 Quad Edition Laptop, running Windows 8.1.
When I finished the setup process, I immediately download Chrome, since IE was the only browser pre-installed. Now, I've never used Windows 8.1 or 8 before and am totally new to this new Metro UI and Charms thing (so far I hate it) so as you can imagine I ran into problems immediately.
I will post the full specs of my laptop below, but just know that it has a 1920x1080 display and an Nvidia GeForce GT 740M graphics card.
When I opened Chrome for the first time, it launched as an app. Everything was okay about it, except I didn't like the new concept of "Apps" and Microsoft's idea of multitasking. So naturally I relaunched it in Desktop Mode. However, I noticed that the text (on the URL bar, the buttons, and the tabs, as well as web content) looked much blurrier than it had in Windows 8 mode.
I looked around for a while for a solution, and found it. You simply had to go to the Chrome properties, go to Compatibility, and check "disable display scaling on high DPI settings". Now, what that meant, but when I relaunched Chrome everything was fine again, except for one problem.
Everything was unnaturally small. The tabs, the URL bar, the refresh, back/forward buttons, menu button, and extensions were all smaller than they were in Windows 8 mode and in desktop mode with display scaling.
Compare the 2 screenshots below:
Chrome with display scaling:
Chrome with display scaling disabled:
You might think this is a small thing, but I believe it's a symptom of a bigger problem. The cursor is abnormally small, too. I've tried changing it to a larger one, but the spinning animations don't get bigger in proportion with the pointer.
Specs:
Processor: Quad-Core Intel Core i7-4700MQ (no overlclock)
RAM: 16GB of memory @1600mHz
HDD: 1TB
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GT740M with 2048MB of dedicated video memory
15.6-inch 1080p Touchscreen display
OS: Windows 8.1

I bought a new laptop with a 13" but HIGH (3800x1800) resolution screen.
Windows 8.1 has a display feature where ALL objects can be scaled larger to deal with the fine resolution.
However, I have one program on the desktop that sometimes flips this off and "goes native".

Background: Yesterday, I upgraded my graphics card and updated from 8 to 8.1, so there is the possibility that this is not an 8.1 issue.
I have 3 monitors running at 1920x1080. Two are computer monitors and one is an hdtv. With Windows 8, the experience on each monitor was identical.
The Problem: With 8.1, one monitor (the hdtv) is scaling things funny. At first it was like all applications (desktop and metro apps) were magnified on the screen. As I dragged an item from screen to screen, I could literally see it magnify once most of it was on the hdtv screen. Icon size, however, remained consistent across displays. After enabling the "Let me choose one scaling level for all my displays" options, desktop apps stopped magnifying.
Nevertheless, the metro UI keeps scaling up unnecessarily on the hdtv. In the pics below the left monitor is the hdtv.
I almost exclusively use the hdtv for metro apps, but at this size, it's horribly inefficient.

I currently have a 15" PC with a 3200x1800 resolution. Using Windows 8.1. I have the scaling to highest.
My 2nd external monitor is 1920 x 1200.
I am trying to extend my desktop to the 2nd monitor but is there a way to use different scaling for both the PC and monitor?
I have unchecked "use scaling for all my displays" but no matter what, I still can't change the scaling on the external display. It uses the scaling settings of my PC (scaling set to highest because of 3200x1800 resolution) and because of that, the monitor scaling shows everything large.

I've tried just about everything, but can't seem to find a setting to stop this action. The screen on my laptop (Sony Flip 15A, intel4400/geforce735) seems to increase and decrease in brightness between screens. It's rather annoying not just because of the change, but also because it takes several seconds to occur and it occurs in discrete steps. I'm running the latest drivers from both intel and nvidia. I've tried turning off adaptive brightness and disabling the sensor service, and all effects (fade in, UAC, etc) have been turned off. A video of the condition is shown below:
(Vimeo was taking forever to process)
It even happen when no programs are opening/closing - for example, if I view a dark background web page and then a lighter background, the brightness shifts. I can't imagine how awful this will be in photoshop.

About five days before that I have reinstalled my Mobile Intel 4 series driver and now in Device manager it shows 3 grayed out monitors which were installed when I have reinstalled the Video driver. The monitor driver that Is currently loaded was installed when I installed the OS itself.

My PC was working fine before today, until I used Ultra UXtheme patcher for Windows 8 x64 and then applied a custom VS for Windows 8.
After a restart, Windows Explorer was not launching, so I opened task manager and did a sfc /scannow. After a reboot, I get to the Windows 8 boot menu (I have a dual-boot on this HDD with win7), and then the screen just turns on and off every few seconds, with the numlock light flickering with the screen.
I tried using the automatic repair, both from the boot menu and from a backup USB, but it does not detect anything. and I still have the same issue.
I restored the backups of uxtheme.dll, uxinit.dll, and themeui.dll, but that didn't work either.
Attached is my ntbtlog.txt.
There is no BSOD, the HDD keeps on spinning a few minutes after boot, and the numlock keeps on flashing. Anything else I can do from my win7 install? I'm currently trying to delete the theme.
Deleting the theme doesn't work, safemode doesn't work either. It seems to be a driver issue, but there were no driver updates when it was working?
