I just received a new Dell Inspiron 15R-5520 64 bit laptop. I also ordered and received from Dell the Windows 8 OS DVD along with a Drivers DVD. I also own a valid Windows 7 OS with product key. I use Acronis True Image 2013 to backup and restore images of the OS.
I wish to partition my HDD into C: and D: with C: containing OS and Programs and D: containing Data. I have done this for years with all prior OS's up through 7. Now I wish to partition the HDD to accept either Windows 7 or 8. I don't wish to setup as dual boot since I will eventually decide on one or the other. I will create Acronis backups of both so I can switch back and forth easily. The Data partition should remain unchanged.
I've now partitioned the HDD with type MBR partitions and installed Windows 7. It's been backed up. I re-formatted C: and attempted to install Windows 8 to the C: drive. It failed without any clear error message. I'm thinking that it refused to install to a type MBR partition? If so, I need to re-partition the HDD to type GPT and start over. I have the following questions:
1. Does Windows 8 refuse to install to type MBR partitions?
2. If so, how best to convert partitions to GPT?
3. How to install Windows 7 to GPT partitions?

I was using my son's laptop (hp 255) as mine is in for repair and thought I would install windows 8.1 onto his system as a free upgrade (bought in march this year running windows 8) Unfortunately the power failed whilst the update was installing and now I can't boot up the computer and he did not create a system repair disk I have looked at safe mode (turn on and press esc) and that will bring me to various options - I have tried restore and it appears there are no restore dates available..

I have bought a 250gb ssd for my inspiron 17r 7720 and was unable to use dell backup and recovery since the ssd is smaller than the original 1tb hdd. Therefore I have done some research and found that i need to get the iso for a fresh windows 8 install.
I am running dell windows 8 core and am in the UK/GB but unsure what iso to use. I have tried an iso from another thread but an error came up saying something like ''the product key entered does not match any of the windows image available for installation'' from thread called ''Thread: Windows 8 Core SingleLanguage OEM original'' but i think that version was a US one (pg11)
i have also tried changing the version and language using the tutorial on ''Why no image file of Win 8 OEM DVD?'' pg3
but on install it asked me for my windows 8 key... but i thoight it would retrieve it from the bios and i dont actually know my key, could I just download any Windows 8 ISO that isn't cracked and just install that? and that would use the bios key?

I need to install Hyper-V, to run Windows Phone 8 emulator on my machine. But I am(actually my system) not able to complete the installation process.
When I enable Hyper-V in the window, it asks for a restart. After restart, during logon screen, it shows Updating. At around 91-95%, system shows "We couldn't complete the features. Restarting." And system rolls back. I want to really use WP8 emulator.
Also my system meets all the necessary system requirements for Hyper-V, already checked via CoreInfo, and Virtualization is ON in BIOS.

Okay I have created a virtual drive, switch and then created a new virtual machine.
I have downloaded a windows 98 iso (legally, I have a disk but its badly scratched).
I'm trying to install win98 on the VM but not sure how. I had the option when I was playing around with the first time and chose install later.
I deleted the VM and drive, created new ones but didn't get the option to install an OS.
If I start the vm I just get boot failure. I have mounted the win 98 iso in the virtual cd drive but nothing's happening!

I just purchased Windows 8. I followed the instructions of some of the threads I saw below with no success. I am also not very technical When I got to Java I downloaded both off-line versions as recommended. At the bottom of the screen it indicated installation success. I then closed all browsers and re-started my machine. Java does not show in my programs and when I went to the test Java site it indicated no programs downloaded, but gave me a link to activate plug-in through Firefox.

I recently upgraded my 250 gb SSD with a 1 Tb one. I used the Samsung migration software to copy the drive and then disconnected the 250 gb drive so things wouldn't get confusing for me.
Everything seemed to work well with the 1 Tb drive. Windows booted extremely fast as usual and it looked like everything was running the way it was before.
Today I reinstalled the 250 gb SSD with the intent to use it for backups. It came partitioned, so I deleted the partition via the windows disk manager and reformatted the now single partition. The drive itself seems to be fine.
The problem is that when windows 8.1 boots, it displays the window logo as usual, but there's a 25 second delay in doing the rest of the booting. The screen is entirely blank, so I have no idea what it's doing. The hard drive light on the CPU blinks, though. The boot order on my bios is correct. I'm not sure why it's so slow to boot now.
The other thing I noticed is that when I click on my Computer icon, the drives take awhile to list. A progress bar slowly advances at the top of the window. Once I've done this once, the drives display quickly, but whatever happened is reset when I reboot the computer.

I got Hyper V setup (I think). The GUI client starts and I can go to the server. I could not get the continuous page after page setup to work unless I first set up a virtual hard drive. I think there was an option to install the OS if I set up the Vm and the VHd at the same time. I am now starting the VM and connecting to it and trying to install the OS using my original OS disk in the CD/DVD drive. It went to drive/DVD and I got the usual promtp: what do you want to do, including "run setup" which is what I selected.
When I do that it takes a long time to setup/copy files and when it gets tot he screen as to what partition to install to, it only shows the system reserved, my boot partition, my data partition (which has the VHDX) and my MBR (BootIt Bare Metal main boot record) partitions. At this point I stopped the OS installation by powering down as while I had these all imaged/backed up I did not want to overwrite any of them. it did not show the VHDX as an option to which to install.
as for other options like install over a network, my network adapter doesn't show and even if I made an ISO image of my OS disk, i don't know how I would get access to it.
In setting up Hyper V I ran the following in a supershell:
enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName Microsoft-Hyper-V -All
I tried to run the following in a command prompt:
Dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:Microsoft-Hyper-V All
but got an error that it did not recognize " -all "
I then ran it without the dash or maybe with a slash in front of it (I can't remember).
I don't even know what this command does and whether it could have an effect on installing an OS to a VHD.
I am running Win 8.1 Pro on an x220 with 8Gb RAM and a 500Gb SSD. I am trying to install Win 7 Ultimate on the VHD. How to install the OS to a virtual hard drive.

I have new pc that has windows 8 pro installed. I would like to dual boot with windows 7 because certain software for work is not compatible with win 8. I was reading that I can create a vhd from windows 8, boot to the windows 7 installation media and install win 7 to the vhd, then I have the option to select win 7 or 8. Am I missing something here or is it as easy as this? Also do I need Win 7 ultimate or will he professional one work? I do not want to partition the hard drive.

Then I try to uninstall, can't because it is still installing. I Turn off the computer, then tried to install quicktime 7 again and It says its still trying to install from the previous program. I can't close out the Windows installer box from the desktop... only when I turn the computer off. I do need to install quicktime to use the cameras in live view to see the video. I have created dual boots before but in each case I did it the "usual" way by doing a fresh install of a second OS on a new drive (or new partition) and then letting the newest installation figure out how to arrange boot loaders or boot managers or whatever, i.e to figure out the dual boot parameters for me.
In this case I want to set up a dual boot using what is now 2 separate drives each with its own complete install of Windows. Of course, I can boot to one or the other by disconnecting the drive for the one I don't want to start up, but that is obviously a hassle.
Is there an easy way to set it up so that one of them (Win 8.1 pro) actually recognizes the other and asks me which one I want at boot up. I know if I re-install one of them I can do it, but I want to just set up the dual boot, and not touch either of the OS installations per se.

Win 8.1
Every time after a major automatic update through Windows Updater, after rebooting, the computer starts the same process as the last steps when you install a fresh version of Windows 8, that is, you see the multicolor screens one after the other with the message that it's installing your apps, then don't turn off the computer etc. After the sequence is over, I'm taken to a blank screen and I have to log out and in to my profile. It seems, that after the update I'm being logged out.
I only have one user with the computer and I turned off the guest account. Also and It may be related,Can't create a new user account. I created a new user account with administrator privileges as usual, but the new account does not show when I log off and then in or try change accounts. It also isn't listed on the upper right corner of the start page.
Basically even though I see it in other accounts, I can't switch to it. I turned on Guest Account and also I can't choose it.

I set up windows to automatically install updates, and I don't want to change that.
When I'm in a hurry to restart or shutdown my PC and I only see "Shut down installing updates" and "Restart installing updates", is there some way to do it bypassing the update?
I've tried command line: shutdown /s but it doesn't work (it updates before shutting down).
Likewise, Alt+F4 (from the desktop) only offers shutting down or restarting and updating.
Neiter logging out and then choosing to shut down (your only choice is also to update and shutdown/restart).
