I'm currently a grad student and need to run and toggle between several programs at once in order to easily complete my assignments (I need Microsoft excel, word, endnote, powerpoint, dropbox, etc. while accessing many internet tabs ). I can do this from the default scenario (i.e. the "old windows" screen), but not the start menu where all the programs are located, creating an extra step for each program needed to complete my assignment and the whole process seems basically unfeasible from the windows 8 start menu. How to set up windows 8 start menu to toggle between many windows and programs? I have been trying to figure this out for several hours now with no success.
I remember when I was using Windows 7 I accidentally found a short key that toggles between the same program e.g. between different windows of a single browser, but forgot what this combination was.
Symptom: I cannot toggle the sleep mode from either my keyboard shortcut or in the menu of windows 8. Both options, shutdown and restart, work perfectly fine but sleep won't work. Here is what happens when I toggle sleep: My screen shuts down but the fans still are blowing. Whenever I move my mouse or press on any peripherals the screens instantly comes back even tho I've unchecked all options allowing peripherals to wake the computer.
What I've done so far: I've tried many commands on an elevated cmd window. I've check every device in "Device manager" to see if they were allowed to wake the computer and when they were, I removed them this permission. I've updated my bios to the latest version. I've tried to check out some "s1" "s2" "s3" settings in my bios but I've found nothing that would work in my case. I thought that maybe fans weren't shutting down because of heat problems. But my system is water cooled always below 40 degrees Celsius, so definitely heat is not a problem.

Not everyone likes Windows AppEvent sounds, and in the past it has been possible to toggle sounds on or off or remove a sound from any event using the sounds control panel applet. Windows 8 rp does not give much of a choice.
Windows 8 continues its deconstruction of what we knew and expected of windows in the sounds department - for instance disabling the showing of sound options for windows logon and logoff with the registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERAppEventsEventLabelsWindowsLogonExcludeFromCPL = 1 etc.
(i.e. you will not be logging off from your desktop anymore, so we won't remind you that it used to be available.)
Sound schemes seem harder to get to work than in Windows 7...
Recently my mom visited a website that tricked her. She downloaded and installed some stuff she didn't need. I removed the stuff but noticed some other problems. I'm not sure if these are new problems caused by the useless stuff she installed.
Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features is not showing all installed programs. Oddly, the only listed installed programs have names that start with the letter M. 14 programs are listed. See picture. Start Menu -> All Programs -> I suspect some programs are missing. I have a Win 7 style Start menu because I am using IObit's Start Menu 8 program. Control Panel -> System and Security -> Administrative Tools was empty. I fixed that by using SFC /SCANNOW.
I tried using System Restore to go back to an earlier date, but that didn't work. In the process of trying to do that I discovered that BitDefender Internet Security 2014 doesn't get along with Windows 8.1's System Restore feature. I uninstalled BitDefender and successfully went back to an earlier date but still had the same problems with missing programs. I undid the restore. I created a new Windows user account. The new account had the same issues: missing programs in the Start menu and Programs and Features menu.
On Windows 8.1, when I open Programs and Features in Control Panel, it does not show all of my installed programs. I am trying to remove some programs and they are not listed.
is there an option to set default launching mode for all applications including any installed in future to run as administrator (identical to selecting Run as administrator from context menu)?
Although I can set up this permanently for an existing executable or shortcut, this is hardly possible doing for any installed program. I know this was possible somehow under Windows 7, all programs launch with admin rights and the superfluous option was removed from context menu.
I want to make screenshot to make a tutorial of how to download and use certain programs. If the program is already downloaded could that be problematic? Would it be better to do it on a blank new user account?
I have not been able to upgrade from Win XP to WIN 7 because the invironment I would have needed to set up in Dos Box was far too complex. I have heard that WIN 8 will use all system Network settings (Novell) and run my DOS programs as well as WIN XP did. Is that right?
Is there a Novell network driver for WIN 8?
Does it make a difference if I install the 32 or 64 bit version of WIN 8?
The only thing I can find is right clicking the start button and clicking programs, but all this does is bring up the uninstall screen, which has no option for simply opening programs. I need a start button like on Seven. Windows 8.1 is what I have
as you know in start screen when we right click on the applications we can see larg or small i pin some of my programs to start screen but when i right click on them i can not see this option. how can i access this?
I'm on win 8 x64. I just did a fresh install and got all the updates. Everything seems fine except there r a few programs that I can't get to run. These programs install with no errors but when I try to run them they won't open. These programs worked before so I know they're not the problem and they're all legit. I emailed the support people but haven't heard anything yet.
Ashampoo burning studio 12. The compact mode runs but the normal mode fails
Coffeecup HTML editor v12. I get an error when opening it and have to close the program.
Farstone Total Recovery Pro. When I try to run it nothing happens and it doesn't show in task manager.
p.s. I tried all the compatibility, run as administrator options etc. also ran sfc and got no errors
My computer won't download programs or run executable. I restored to the earliest point it showed, 12/7, but no luck. I turned off firewall; nothing. Chrome only runs with reduced screen resolution. What's corrupted?
I buy a new computer, all now come with windows 8.
I do not like it at all, it is so dumbed down and so difficult to use; I wish I could return to windows 7.
I have however over the last few months installed many of my old programs from windows 7. This was straight forward. It was also easy to uninstall them using the control panel.
Then suddenly, in the control panel window for uninstalling, many of these programs are not listed. Yes they are still working well, like Microsoft word and excel, but they do not show in the uninstall window.
Could my anti virus AVAST have anything to do with it.
how can i set windows 8 to run all programs as administrator by default so i dont have to select "run as administrator" each time ? I have a program that auto launch on startup and it needs administrator right.
I only have one account on my PC and it is the administrator account..
I work at a large school district wherein computers running Windows 8 are shared by staff and students. How can I create a new account type (i.e. Student) and apply the fix above to limit what programs appear when students log on. I have an image for what the student access will comprise, but I don't want to cut off teachers and principals from their resources.
I have installed windows 8 64 bit on (C) and I would like to install the program files, printers, etc on another drive. I have 3 drives 1- ssd, 2- 1TB drives, 1- blu-ray player. This is the first computer that I built. Now how to finish my project.
I am well versed in malware as I am moving through training at MRU (under a different name), and I know my issue is not a malware issue.
It has windows 8. I set myself up as admin, and him up as a child user. All has worked perfectly.
Last night, he was playing with it, and he changed the resolution from 1366 x 768 to 1280 x 720. He then changed it back. No harm no foul, right? However, now several of the programs wont start or maximize when logged into his account. For example, if I log in as myself, the kindle app will start without a problem. If I log in as him, i get the splash screen, and then it quickly shifts to the metro app screen with no evidence of the app.
Switching to the "desktop" view, I can see the kindle app on the taskbar, but it will not expand. A lot of research led me to understand this could be a resolution issue, but we switched it back to the original. It obviously could be lots of other things as well. I am seeing the same behavior in about half of the apps on the computer.
I keep getting the error " windows resource not available" when I try to run certain programs. The program uses an rs232 connection to a casio cash register and the program is cv22. I am using a usb to serial adapter that I know works.
I cannot load programs via the web (this may also be true of programs from disc) I have tried to install programs from Bank Tree, Dassault Systems, and numerous others and they all freeze during the initiation stages, I have tried installing in safe mode but this will not work as due to the safe mode, something is missing, so I turned off the firewall but this had no effect at all, this situation is driving me mad I'll bet it's the pesky Windows 8.1 that is the problem.
Within 24-hours I come a long way from Windows 7 to Windows 8 which I'm not too impress with right now -- I found a way to get the Start Menu Button back onto my computer, but I don't know how to load programs on it?
When i open up my file explorer and for some reason steam friends it shows on the task bar that it is there and it is running but when i click on them it doesnt show the window.
I updated to windows 8.1 and tried to run a program, Driver Booster (IOBit), and was unable to. It changed the cursor to a cursor w/ loading circle then kept it like that. It is still spinning as I type this. It requires admin privileges if that matters at all..
I've been having this issue and trying to wrap my head around it for a couple weeks, and I've had this new laptop less than a month. Just as I was posting this, I realized that it seems to be specifically 64-bit programs.
Specifically, the problem is that when I try to drag a file from Explorer into a program that I know is able to load it from drag-and-drop, all I get is the "no" pointer, the circle with the line. All the programs I've tested would let you drag files onto them just fine on my older Windows 7 laptop.
Some of the specific programs this is happening in: Microsoft Office 2010 (seemingly the whole suite is acting like this, I tested Word and Powerpoint) Paint.NET 3.5.10 Sony Vegas 12.0 Waterfox 18.0.1
I can File>Open files in these programs just fine, but dragging to them from Explorer would be miles more convenient. I've tested the files I've tried dragging. They drag fine into Notepad, they drag fine into Foobar2000, IrfanView, Notepad++, all operating as 32-bit.
Now I WAS having the same problem with Audacity and Skype, which is why I didn't catch the pattern of them all being x64 programs at first (since I have 32-bit versions of both), but that was happening because they were being run as Administrator, which is an issue I'd also like to try and resolve. I don't understand why running as Admin should prevent me from dragging files into open windows of them.
Where and how do you access your programs in windows 8. I have been looking all day, and found nothing, if you want to run the disc clean up, I can't find it.
