Windows To Go On Standard USB2 External Disk
Jun 25, 2014
Just want to say that on a decent laptop (i5 processor) running Windows to Go from a standard external USB2 disk (using a 7200 RPM old laptop drive connected via a sata==>usb2 connector) performance is certainly totally ACCEPTABLE. Even running Photoshop is OK - and I've connected the USB drive via an UNPOWERED USB hub !!
The Windows to go system is certainly nice as a portable system with my own copies of Office etc in various languages and keyboard configurations -- certainly when I'm on site where other languages / keyboards are used.
For those who think you have to use a "certified" device -- you don't -- you can install on "bog standard" devices -- you will need to extract the IMAGEX program from the WAIK -- you can use the Windows 7 WAIK (downloadable from Ms) if you haven't got it. Ensure you chose the x86 / x64 version depending on what version of Windows you want in your Windows to go system.
Here's how to create a Windows to Go system on a "normal" device. (You still of course need Windows 8.1 Enterprise).

Just running some tests on three average external USB2 HDD (self powered) 1TB drive -- Thicker older WD model -- not the Passport type but still self powered.
On a USB2 connection the data transfer still around 50% FASTER than when formatted with standard MBR.
Unless you NEED the older MBR system I can't see ANY disadvantages to making all my disks GPT where possible - except for the small SSD I have as my Boot disk -- even on a non UEFI system (where a GPT disk won't be bootable - but perfectly fine for DATA etc).

This morning when I turned on my PC, I noticed these 2 weird icons appearing in front of my two drives (local, and backup disks). The 2 icons were not there before? They look like the standard Microsoft User(s) icon, but why are they suddenly/randomly appearing?
Here's an image of what I'm talking about.

Since upgrading to Windows 8.1, something weird has been happening. Each time I plug in a USB2 device into the USB3 port on my Asus T100 tablet/laptop (Atom processor, 2Gb RAM and 32Gb SSD), it fails to recognise the device and then throws an Error 43 and complains that the device did not provide a suitable descriptor.
Initially I thought it was a Hardware issue. USB3 devices in the same USB port worked correctly, so I figured it might be bent contacts. However, adding a USB3 hub with USB3 devices chained from it worked, but USB2 still did not work. I therefore suspect a configuration or driver issue, but I cannot figure out how to fix it. The following link seems to cover it

I have a Toshiba 2TB External HD that came with NTI Backup software. Seemed to work fine until Win 8.1 installed and now I get the 'Corrupted' message, although the Drive shows up in This PC. Driver appears okay and as far as I can see the USB 3 hub the Drive is connected to is working. Have tried in USB 2 but with same result.

I was wondering what you'd recommend for the following:
I want a program that synchronizes my files with my external hard drive.
The client I use right now, Memeo Instant Backup, is decent, but has the following issues:
1. Takes a lot of resources to run
2. Is extremely slow
3. Doesn't mirror deleting files on my hard drive, keeps them on my external and causes it to get full
Is there a program I can use that just literally copies my user folder onto an external drive, and as I delete/move files on my hard drive, its mirrored on the external hard drive?

My observation on using a couple of USB3 small passport 2TB self powered disk drives when I connect then to a powered standard usb2 hub is that they perform FAR FASTER than external USB 2 disk drives --especially the self powered small pocket size one's.
So if you are buying external drives --even if you don't have USB3 ports on your machine it's still worth going for the USB 3 drive.

I recently got a new PC via my insurance company that came with Windows 8 standard. I requested pro be included with it and they gave me an OEM Windows 8 Pro 64 bit. I have blanked the hard drive and installed it. During the install it does not ask for the product key. Once the install is complete I go to system info and it says Windows is already activated and shows a product key that ends in OEM. At the top it shows the name of the product as Windows 8. If I go to add features it tells me I need to buy pro. If I try to change or use the product key that came in the oem packaging for pro 64 bit it says that product key will not work and to try another.

I'm setting up a stolen laptop tracking software and want to leave a standard/non-admin user account open for a potential thief. The software requires someone to log in and connect to the internet in order to start tracking. So if I only have my personal admin account password protected, I will be out of luck. The problem is that while logged in as a standard user I am able to access recovery options. From there I can use advance startup and proceed to reset my pc. If a thief logs in and resets my pc right away, I will have no way of tracking them. I have windows 8.1 standard and have not been able to find any way from restricting access to the recovery options.

My son is no longer able to logon to his standard user account on my Windows 8.1 U1. I am unable to switch users following a cold start of the computer. Also, I am unable to switch users while logged on to my account.
My System:
Dell XPS 8100 with Intel i5 processor and 6GB DDR3 ram. The desktop initially included Windows 7 Home Premium. I upgraded to Windows 8 Pro as a $40 Windows Store purchase. I've since updated to Version 8.1 and the first update following the release of 8.1. At time of upgrade to Windows 8, all prior updates to Windows 7 were current and successful. Since upgrading to Windows 8, all updates are current and I only experienced 1 update "Failed" (KB2919355), which upon a reinitialization after the failure, was successful. Until this problem, the PC and operating system have run very well with no real problems.
As noted above, there are 2 users on this PC. Myself (administrator), and son (standard user). I can't pinpoint an exact date when my son was no longer able to logon to his account; however in checking the registry I find that the last notation of his login activity under error reporting was a successful login and logoff done on April 30th. And even though attempts have been made since that time to login to his account, there are no notations of this in the error reporting log that I can find. Most likely that's because I can't get to a point that will allow me to "initiate" a login for his account. It's as though his account does not exist.
What Happens When:
Boot - When the computer boots, it only presents a login screen for my account. There is no right-arrow allowing me to switch users. Switching to a secure login via Ctrl Alt Del yields the same results.
After I'm logged in - If I click to switch users, once again I will get a login screen with my account only and no way of switching users. If I wake the computer from sleep or from screen saver mode, I'm presented with my user picture and password, however, this time I do get a right-arrow to switch user. When I click the arrow, the screen goes black for about 5-7 seconds, at which time I'm presented my user login and no switch user arrow.
Efforts to Resolve:
I've researched this issue the the past month or so and have checked and/or tried just about everything that's out there from Microsoft, Windows 8 Forum, The Windows Club, and a few other sites as well. As I follow the suggested fixes, everything seems to be as it should be. I've yet to find anything that does not appear to be "right". For example: SFC /scannow says everything's OK. If I go to User Accounts, both accounts are present. If I go to C:Usersmy son's account, it is there. I am able to create another account with name and password. However, I am unable to open that account for the same reasons that I'm not able to open my son's account. The new account created is NOT reflected under C:UsersNew Account, so I'm unable to copy files from my son's account to the new account.
Because of the time delay from when my son first informed me that he's been unable to open his account, my restore points are all following when it probably occurred. I do have a Macrium image from late March that is available. However, I'm wondering if I brought the PC back to a state from this past March if I would be able to install all updates to get the system current. I know Microsoft was imposing time constraints associated with updating to Update 1 following Windows 8.1 ...

I have a game (ATCSimulator 2) that is not written for widescreen. The game tells me that in order to work in the mode I want the display must be set to a standard 4:3 setting. It gives the options of 1280x800, 1440x900 or 1680x1050. I tried to do this, but apparently my video card does not support any standard resolutions. I thought it might just show the screen stretched, but the game will not even go into the mode I want to use.
How I can change the resolution to display properly or possibly a workaround for this?
My video adapter is Intel HD Graphics 4000
Intel driver version 10.18.10.3277
15.6" display
Max Resolution 1366x768
Windows 8.1

This link contains WinRar software (wrar501.exe 1.68MB):
WinRAR download and support: Pre-Download
This software can be installed on Windows XP by a standard user (not administrator). It will ask which folder to install into.
But on Windows 8 I can't install the same software as standard user. It always prompts for administrator's password to continue (let's just say I do not have the password).
How can I force to install software as standard user on Windows 8 ?

I need to add another standard user. I have one admin account and one standard user.
After adding the second standard account name and password on Control Panel I get the confirmation that the new user can now sign in.
However,I get this famous message that the profile service cannot open.
I looked into C:users and find
Default.migrated
Default
Public
Administrator
First standard user
But not the newly created user account. Nor can I find it in the Registry ProfileService.
Why does Window lye to me saying the new user account is available but it did not create it?

I set up my administrator account and standard user account. Both are Live. Alienware Laptop. On the standard account, users can not even run a game (original Fable that requires disk to start up) without it asking for my password. Which is not always convenient seeing as how I work and all. How do I allow standard users to run programs but not make changes to the computer? So far I have not seen any threads about this. I've been going around in circles in control panel searching for anything that would allow me to grant permission permanently but so far I have found nothing.

Recently, I set up a test administrator account and a test standard user account. Having served their purposes, I deleted them--or so I thought. Now, when I go Computer > C: > Users, I still see both of the user folders. When I try to delete them, I am told that I need administrative permission, but I am logged on as an administrator, specifically, the original administrator on the computer. Perhaps I need to take ownership of the folders in order to delete them, but I have not had to take ownership in such a long time that I am hesitant to do so without hearing from others--that taking ownership is the right path to deleting the folders. I know that we have a "take ownership" tutorial so I can check it out if need be.
I also have the option of stopping sharing of the folders--which would work a little since one or both still show up as shared folders on my network in a place or so. Probably this part of what I have typed is best ignored since stopping sharing won't delete the folders.

On all my other user names on this pc, I open a email, right click on image to save and it opens my NORMAL folders to save. One this ONE user name for some reason it opens a BLACK screen almost blank that has a colum of photos along the left hand side of the screen. it says files, pictures, go up, sort by screen.
It's crazy, I can't see anything like normal. It's so annoying and I've read online for hours and can't get this damn screen to go away. I want to see the classic view of the pictures folders when I am saving or uploading a photo. It does it on my other user names so what gives?
I'd like to send a image but it won't let me take a screen shot.

I'm thinking of getting a new laptop with an SSD internal drive for OS and an external USB drive for all my user files. Based on my research so far, it looks like 128gb SSD should be large enough for Win 8.1, all Win updates, and my programs. The main programs I use are LibreOffice, Chrome, Firefox, MediaMonkey, Kaspersky, VLC, Skype, Audacity, PhotoScape, iTunes, PDF reader and some misc small utility apps. Just the usual apps for a typical user. I'm not a power user, I don't play PC games and I don't edit video or use any Adobe CS apps.
So do you think 128gb SSD is enough? Or should I play it safe and get larger?

I'm currently using Windows 8.0. Would like to check if it is possible to allow a particular software to be run as Administrator, even when I am using a "standard account", without the need to enter the administrator password everytime I open it? Essentially like making an exception to allow the software to make changes to system while in a standard account.
Reason being, I am using a Standard account, but do not know the administrator password. But there is this particular program that I am required to use, but everytime I open it will prompt if I would like to Run as Admin. And if I click No to that, some functions will not be workable in the program.

Any way to get rid of Metro appz which come with Win8 directly working with Dism. Also it's possible to restore standard file associations so that pictures open with Image viewer without switching to Metro UI.
Note: c: est contains my offline image.
Code:
dism /image:c: est /Remove-ProvisionedAppxPackage /PackageName:Microsoft.BingFinance_1.2.0.135_x86__8wekyb3d8bbwe
dism /image:c: est /Remove-ProvisionedAppxPackage /PackageName:Microsoft.BingMaps_1.2.0.136_x86__8wekyb3d8bbwe
[Code] .....
To fix associations, save this XML as "AppAssoc.xml":
Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<DefaultAssociations>
<Association Identifier=".bmp" ProgId="PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Bitmap" ApplicationName="Windows Photo Viewer" />
<Association Identifier=".dib" ProgId="PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Bitmap" ApplicationName="Windows Photo Viewer" />
[Code] .....
And then:
Code:
dism /image:c: est /Remove-DefaultAppAssociations
dism /image:c: est /import-DefaultAppAssociations:C:AppAssoc.xml
