Windows 8 Loses WiFi Connection Often
Apr 17, 2014
I have HughesNet satellite modem service. If I have the modem connected directly to my W8 Gateway new computer, I have no issues with the connection. However, when I have company here who have wi-fi type devices (Ipads, cellphones, etc) and I connect my computer via the wireless router instead, their devices have no issues connecting to the internet or texting, but my Gateway W8/IE service loses the network connection frequently and I get a window (after the normal 'page cannot be found' error) that has a link to reset the router. Once that happens and everything is back on track, the Gateway will work correctly again for an hour or two and then it will happen again.
I've got a Belkin 3937 router that is only about six months old and cannot for the life of me figure out why it loses the connection on the Gateway frequently but no other devices. I've gotten to the point where as soon as my company leaves, I disconnect the route and again have a wired connection from the computer to the modem just to stop the aggravation.

I recently updated from Windows 8 Pro to Windows 8.1 using Microsoft update. After the update was completed, I've started to have problems connecting to the internet using a wired connection. NOTHING else has changed since the update. If I reboot, it works for less than 30 minutes and then the connection switches to "limited connectivity" with no way to revert it back to the usual status. If I reboot the computer, it works fine again for a little bit. Oddly enough, if I connect the computer to the exact same router using wireless, it does not seem to be dropping the connection.
I'm using a Dell Studio XPS 8100 with the factory Broadcom Netlink Gigabit Ethernet adapter.
So far, I have: disabled, reenabled the device (PC seems to hang when I do this as well) reinstalled the drivers after removing them verified there is no proxy or weird DNS settings setup on the connection.

My wi-fi keeps disappearing, it says "no connections available" and even the wi-fi adapter in network/sharing center is not present, only bluetooth is there. When I restart it comes back.
I have a new Vaio Tap 11 tablet which came with regular Windows 8, I updated it to 8.1, got all the updates after that and updated every driver in vaio update utility, I did nothing else.

I am running Windows 8 Home Edition. On a HP DV6-7250CA.I have a Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230 Card.I also have several other laptops and desktop all connected to the same router. For some reason, randomly my Windows 8 HP laptop turns of my wifi internet access just on this laptop, then when i try to reconnect, it says unable to connect. The only way I can get back on line, is if I go to device manager, and disable and then reenable my wireless card.I have tried reinstalling the driver, and it still happens. None of my other machines are effected and run great on wifi. Why just this windows 8 laptop is randomly doing this?

As all know that Microsoft removed the ability to create ad-hoc wireless connection via the "Set up a wireless ad hoc" option under "Set up a new connection or network" in Windows 8, So my question is How can we bring back the valuable feature?
My friends are using Windows 7 and they can create a Wi-fi Hotspot very easily which can even be accessed by me having Windows 8 Enterprise installed in Compaq 620. But i couldn't create one.
I've tried the following applications floating in the web which claims to do the Job, but none of them seems to work for me-
1. Connec8
2. Virtual Router Plus
3. Wi-Man
4. Win Hot-Spot version v.1.2.42
5. Connectify
6. Thinix Wi-Fi Hotspot
This feature was good in Windows 7. I don't know what made Microsoft remove it from Windows 8. For this only i am being advised to downgrade to Windows 7, which genuinely i am not interested in!!

About two weeks ago I turned my laptop on and everything went blank, it couldn't read my drives, no data, nothing. After rebooting it a few times (with a lot of swearing and threatening to chuck it out of the window) eventually everything came back.
HOWEVER, since that night I have been unable to have a stable wireless connection. I have even reset my laptop to a factory setting. I then sent it away to get repaired and I'm still having the same issue. I've spent about two hours on the phone with my ISP but all of my other devices such as phone and iPad connect to the internet fine, although it does drop randomly every now and then.
I have a perfect connection when it is wired and works at a very good speed but if I try to connect to wifi it either says 'Unable to connect to this network' or 'limited' internet connection. My wifi also works to my ps3 and I'm able to stream videos without any annoying buffering.
The make is Lenovo and the model is Z580. It's about a year and a half old.
Is my wifi card (if there is one?!) broken? Can I just buy a USB port dongle that will connect to the internet? Or is there a magical cure?!

I just traveled to a place where there is supposed to be wifi and I am staying here for a while. The wifi connects well through Ipod, but when connecting through windows 8 it accepts the password but tells me this connection is limited.
I searched through some threads and did some of the solutions such as the netsh reset for example but none have worked so far. Should I do a factory reset to my laptop?

I recently upgraded to windows 8.1 pro on my laptop (HP Probook 6560b). This is an old business laptop that used to belong to my mother and originally had windows 7. After upgrading and installing all required drivers there is still no option to connect to the internet via Wi-Fi. (currently connecting via ethernet cable)
This is what my network screen looked like:
I say "looked" because that has since changed after downloading the broadcom driver from the HP website (this link> Broadcom Wireless LAN Driver for Microsoft Windows 8 | HP Support), now my network screen looks like this:

My Windows 8 laptop is having some WiFi connection issues.
Basically what happens is that every 5-20 minutes I cannot access the internet on browsers and the wifi connection is listed as "Limited".
The laptop: ASUS Vivobook S200E
The WiFi: Sky wireless router (no idea about model, it's almost two years old) But what I will say is that my Windows 7 laptop never skips a beat on this network, nor does my wife's Mac, nor do our 2 Android tablets, the iPad, the iPhone, the Android phone, and various devices that our friends connect when they come round. Literally no other device has any problems on this network, so I know (by the process of elimination) the Windows 8 laptop is the one with the problem.
In order to fix the issue I have to disconnect from the network, wait about 30 sec and reconnect again.

I'm going to throw my hat into the ring of people with wi-fi issues following an update to 8.1. on a brand new Alienware 17.
After the update to 8.1 last night, wi-fi will connect and then drop out after I start transferring data (browsing)
The only remedy is to either restart, or "forget" the connection and re-establish. At which point it will again only work for several minutes, or until I start "using" it.
Wireless adapter is a Broadcom BCM4352 Wireless adapter.

I bought Windows 8 when it was released, like most people I liked the performance upgrades and other stuff, but that was about it. Months later I installed Windows 7 again, but it just felt old and there were a few things I missed about Windows 8, anyway yesterday I decided to install Windows 8 again (8.1) but I'm having a problem since I did.
Whenever I connected an external hard drive via USB3.0, Wi-Fi would disconnect. I searched this over to see if other people were having the same issue, there were some guys but they were using a USB based Wi-Fi adapter, I'm using the one in the laptop.
DETAILS
Asus U47A
Wi-Fi adapter: Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230
External Hard Drive: Seagate Expansion Portable Drive (500GB, USB3.0)
OS: Windows 8.1 Pro, All updates (Problem happens with or without updates, with original (Asus) or Windows supplied drivers)
I was loosing the Wi-Fi connection and I didn't know why, it was very intermitent, it would work for 10 minutes and then not, I then downloaded new drivers, directly from Intel, Asus and then using the Windows Update, it didn't work in neither case.
I was watching youtube and noticed the signal was good, it was working fine, and realised that the Seagate HDD was disconnected, I had just isolated the problem.
I tried to replicate it and indeed it happened, whenever I connected the drive, signal would be lost. At first I thought it might be a hardware-based issue, but it was working fine with Windows 7, so I decided to play with it a little more. I found out that Wi-Fi connection wasn't being lost, but rather loosing power, Windows would only display the closest routers (two, out of five or six that are in range). So I enabled internet sharing in my cell phone, guess what? It worked fine, signal was strong.
I connected the Seagate drive to a USB2.0 port, no problem. Then connected a different HDD (USB2.0) to the USB3.0 port, no problem.
So the thing is that Wi-Fi loses power when the USB3.0 HDD is connected to the USB3.0 port.

A friend of mine just bought a HP Envy dv6-1148ca and the LAN and WIFI keeps dropping out.
He has re-installed Windows 8 twice with the same results.
System specs:
Windows 8 64bit
AMD A8-4500M
8GB RAM DDR3 800MHz
750 GB HDD
AMD Radeon HD 7640G
Ralink RT 3290 802.1 bng WIFI adaptor - Driver v5.0.2.0 Date:2012-08-08
Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller - Network adapter, Driver v8.3.730.2012 Date:2012-07-30
Searches showed others with HP laptops having the same issues, no one seems to find an answer to this problem.
Secure sites seem to be more stable, but do drop out.
Some sites won't start at all, others start but drop out after 1-3 hours.
We have reset the Power Management to not 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power' and still the same.
Other laptops on same network are having no problems, including other HP laptops, different models.

My Surface 2 has this issue where it is connected to the wireless network at first and then it gets limited connection followed by no connection until it re- connects. Sometimes it happens a lot, other times a bit more rarely but overall I feel it has been getting worse lately.
I have tried turning off the router as well as removing that specific connection from the Surface through command prompt and re-connect, but neither has worked.
I have tried trouble shooting the network to no avail, and according to device manager my network drivers are up to date so I don't know what's going on.

My building has wifi. I am able to connect and surf the net. There are 4 connections available to use. Periodically, I get disconnected/reconnected or my signal is very low. Am told it's due to the number of users connecting at one time or accessing a sight that may reduce my signal.
I do have access to change the 4 Network connection properties.
- Set to connect automatically when in range.
- Set to mixed band with options 2.4or 5.2 Ghz open.
My network card is Centrino -Ultimate-N 6300 AGN
I use Windows 8 platform.

i have a lenovo idea pad that will connect to wifi but says limited connection. I can use the iternet via ethernet cable with no issues. My ISP is comcast and I have one of their modems that came with wifi im guessing it doubles as a router seeing i direct connect to it with my laptop. however my wifi works for my xbox one, a nexus 7 tablet a xbox 360 ,a printer and two smartphones with no issues what so ever. They are not all on at once so max connections shouldnt be a issue. I've spent hours on the phone with comcast and they insist its the laptop and not the wifi, how to go about fixing the issue. I've checked the drivers and their up to date then uninstalled and reinstalled still no luck. i use firefox for browsing and AVG for antivirus.

I use my cell phone for internet access on my laptop, since it can act as a portable wifi access point.
The problem I'm having is that every time I connect, Windows 8.1 creates a new profile. So I started with "Phone access point", then I got "Phone access point 2" on the second connection, "Phone access point 3" on the third connection, and so on and so on, creating a new profile every time I connect.
Is there any way I can tell Windows 8.1 to use the same network profile whenever it connects to "Phone access point", since it's the same connection as it was last time. It does it correctly for all the other wifi access points I connect to: home, work,, the only one that's causing a problem is the phone's connection.

I am facing a strange problem with my internet connection on Windows 8.
I have a netgear WNR612 wifi router and two laptops connected to it running Windows 7 on first and Windows 8 on second.
The connection in Windows 8 laptop shows sufficient signal strength but when I try to access internet, it does only shows connecting. I have changed browsers, wifi router, adsl router, released and reconnected IP address, forgot and re-added wifi network, reset wifi router to factory almost everything.
The strange part is that as soon as the other Windows 7 laptop is disconnected from the network, Windows 8 internet start working fine. I have tested this many times and there is no doubt in this behavior.
I dont know whether the problem is in any update installed on Windows 8 the older Dell Wireless 1703 wifi card or some virus in the other Windows 7 laptop.
My ipconfig output:
Ethernet adapter Bluetooth Network Connection:
Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Bluetooth Device (Personal Area Network)
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : F4-B7-E2-59-1E-42

Note that I have assigned preferred IP addresses to both laptops based on MAC.

When i choose the connection's icon from the task bar, to connect to wifi, the connection side bar appears for a brief instant and disappears. At the moment i can connect to the network in my home, since it is default, but anywhere else i cant choose a new network.
Same occurs when i try to display available networks from the network and sharing centre.
I made a workaround which is very cumbersome for a casual user.
1. command prompt, and listed and deleted the profiles, using the netsh wlan command
2. Network and sharing
3. Setup new connection or network
4. Manually connect to a wireless network
5. typed the credentials of the network, checked start this connection automatically box and apply.

Network on my Lenovo Yoga running Windows 8.1 works fine over both wireless and Ethernet (USB dongle).
I have an iMac initiating a Remote Desktop connection to the Yoga via a direct Ethernet cable between the devices. Everything works fine on the Windows 8.1 device except the WiFi can no longer connect to any access points and thus the Yoga has no Internet/network access--it just fails immediately when I select an access point for connection.
I do see an Event ID 8000 from NETwNe64 around the time of this failure; not sure if it's the same cause.
If I log back into the Yoga (and thus break the Remote Desktop Ethernet connection and take over that session), wireless works perfectly again. Thus it is clear that WiFi is only down when the device is accessed via RDP over Ethernet.

I just got a new laptop (Acer Aspire One 756) and keep having an issue with the internet connection not being able to connect after the computer sleeps or hibernates for a few hours. It usually says identifying network... no internet access. I copied and pasted the trouble shooting that I did below. It still works if I restart or the computer sleeps or hibernates for less than an hour or so. The other computer and devices that use this connection work fine when mine isn't working. I can fix this problem by restarting the router and it works fine again.
It's just annoying to have to restart the router a few times a day. It also only does this with my network at home. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the network adapter with the most updated driver, power cycling the router and all the devices, changing the network adapter settings to do not turn this device off to save power, and resetting the Winsock like I've seen on other forum posts. None of these has worked so far. The router is a dlink WBR-1310 and it's pretty old. My wireless network adapter is a Qualcomm Atheros AR5B125.
