Here's a picture of my Windows 8 taskbar, and is it possible to make the changes I'm looking for through registry hacks or through some program.

MS clearly neglects the vertical taskbar, and having the "Show Desktop" button on the bottom is really useless because I have to very carefully click the button now or else it is totally hidden behind the new start charm. The new Start button in 8.1 could in theory fix the problem except for the fact that you can't disable just the start charm. MS only allows you to turn off the top left and top right charms. Why would I want BOTH a button and the charm?
And why on earth would my icons be left aligned when every other taskbar icon is center aligned?
I've had windows 8 installed yesterday first on the desktop i couldn't open any window except of the explorer. After applying windows updates only the firefox window opens others just blink in the taskbar but can see nothing.
Recently I installed latest Windows 8.1 update (Update 1/Spring update), and later latest Beta Nvidia driver. After that, an strange problem showed up. I recorded a video which represents it (look at the thumbnail 'hiding' under the previewed application ).
I'm using UxStyle and this theme: Windows 8.1 White Titlebar Dark theme by x0lis on deviantART . I tried:
Uninstalling UxStyle and themeInstalling 'normal' Nvidia driverDoing sfc /scannow but it didn't find anything particular (something about prncacla.inf, but I don't think that this causes this problem)Scanning system with antivirus (KIS 2014)Turning off and on option 'Enable preview' in Advanced setting -> PerformanceChanging theme to otherSearching about this in Google and this forum, but I didn't find anything similar but nothing worked.
Well I didn't tried uninstalling Update 1, but I would like to avoid that.
After a recent Windows update I now have the desktop taskbar appearing when I go into Metro apps. It's annoying because it often hides some on screen info.
I prefer not to use the "auto hide" option and I have not enabled the "Show Windows Store apps on the taskbar" option.
So I have the option "Taskbar buttons" as "Never combine". So that is correct, they all show separately in the taskbar. So they may be next to each other, yet they Cannot be separated from being next to each other. I tend to drag Explorer windows (or open folders) in the taskbar to different locations. So whenever I have two folders open, and I drag one of them in the taskbar from the left side to the right side of all the other windows that are open, Both Explorer windows move together, yet I only wanted one of them to move to the right side, while the second one should stay where it was.
How can I separate similar windows from each other in the taskbar?
I've been having this issue since I have installed windows 8.1 that sometimes that opened video games such as Dota 2 would not show on taskbar and I have to alt+tab to get back to see them.
In windows 8 it was removed and I was happy (I have a keyboard so I just use hotkeys), but in 8.1 it turns on by default and I can't see how to switch it back off.
I have a brand new Hp Pavilion and while in the process of customizing my desktop and taskbar I found that i am unable to pin anything from the desktop or shortcuts I created (such as Microsoft Word, or the snipping tool) to the taskbar. I have tried all three methods to try and pin.
The only items pinned are the ones already there from the first boot.
I have a new laptop with and therefore learning Windows 8. my concern today is in the taskbar I have the touch keyboard always on my taskbar and the English keyboard settings. I go into taskbar properties, and I have tried every conceivable option I can think of to stop this unlock toolbar, apply , save, uncheck settings apply, save, lock toolbar apply, save. etc from my reg acct as well as from within admin acct. But still after every reboot, they appear back again.
I have a windows 8 laptop and have been transferring files from my laptop to my Google drive. I have done this before without any problems, however when I try and click this minimised folder it won't expand or become more viewable (though I can hover over it with my mouse).
I am using dual screens (one TV and my laptop, expanding view onto both of these) so have tried switching back to just using my laptop to expand the folder but no joy. I have right clicked on the folder when I hover over it (see attachments, 2nd one are the options I see when I right click on the hovering folder) but any of these options just revert me back to the desktop and don't open the folder.
I have some trouble with thumbnail windows in tasks bar. A few days ago, maybe after official last windows update, but not sure, I found a very vexing bug in task bar. When I hover on task bar icons, the thumbnail windows pop-up and when I hover in it all the preview windows is goind under the opened windows but the thumbnail windows is still accessible so I even can close it but I can't see it. It's very inconvenient especially with couple of opened windows.
In other verisons of windows the tiles on the taskbar would be in order from time. If i opened Google Chrome, and then Adobe, and then another Google Chrome instance it would look that way. Now however it "groups" the two Google Chrome ones near other, and the Adobe one on the left. Anyway to change that?
I recently converted to Windows 8(.1) from 7. When I had seven I'd play games in windowed (borderless) mode and tab out to my other monitor. It left behind a taskbar at the bottom overlaying the game I was previously on. I found this actually kinda useful. Now in Windows 8 it only shows if I tab to a program on the same monitor as the game, and not if I tab to a program on my other monitor. Is there any way to change this?
I've had a Windows 8.1 laptop (Acer) for a couple of months now. As of yesterday it's started to become unresponsive after an undefined period (say, 10 minutes) of unuse. So, when I turn on the computer, everything works fine. After I've left it alone for a while, I come back to it and find that the taskbar, desktop, and all windows buttons (minimize, maximize, close) have become unclickable, though other things (e.g. the tabs in Firefox) are still clickable. If I shut the computer down and restart it it's ok again, until it happens again.
This started yesterday: I hadn't installed any new programs yesterday.
Is this possible? I have 3 open Chrome windows that are minimized in the taskbar. I would like them to remain in the order that I originally opened them, but sometimes Windows 8 decides to switch their order. It's extremely frustrating and totally breaks up the flow of my work. Can I rearrange them back?
I have my installation of Windows 8.1 desktop taskbar set to never combine, use small icons and locked. With XP I could pin a program to the taskbar, click it once and the program would open. Click the program icon a second time and a new instance of the program would open. With Win 8.1 if you click the icon the second time the window simply minimizes. How can I restore the old XP behavior. I realize that I can right-click on the icon after one instance is open and open another instance of the program. However, that is an additional step that is a pain in the butt.
I should add that I use the latest version of Classic Shell and have look through the settings and don't see any that can change this behavior.
A niggle that's potentially quite a problem is that my 8.1 laptop Taskbar is not notifying me that "New Updates are Available."
I never set to install them automatically, I like to know what's going on and choose how to use my connection and processing power, but the notification from the Log In screen is easily missed and not satisfactory in my opinion. I think there's a third party piece of software to correct this, but I was wondering if there's a better way to restore the function?
I'm setting up a new Windows 8 PC. In my Win7 PC, I have an icon on the taskbar that holds all open folders. I'll call it the "Open Folders" icon. I don't remember how that icon got on Win7's taskbar. How can I create a similar icon on Windows 8's taskbar.
EXPLANATION:
In Win7, say I open the C: drive and click on "Program Files". Then I minimize that window. The "C:Program Files" folder minimizes to the "Open Folders" icon on Win7's taskbar.
Then say I open drive D: and click on a folder named "Photos". Then I minimize that window. The "D:Photos" folder minimizes to the same "Open Folders" icon on Win7's taskbar.
Now if I hover over the "Open Folders" icon on the taskbar, links to the Program Files folder and the Photos folder pop up. I can click the desired folder to open it.
How can I create a similar "Open Folders" icon on Windows 8's taskbar?
this is my Desktop at the moment and I have optimized Quick Launch on the task bar as I like
How can I backup my Quick launch Task bar? If I format my Win 8 and reinstall Win 8 I want back my Quick launch. another Problem, is there a way to set Live Mail into the tray?
My task bar on the desk top in Windows 8.1 has suddenly increased in size and now covers one third of the screen. How can I reduce this back to the single line.
In the lower right corner of my screen, there used to be 1 icon on the taskbar and if I clicked on it, a whole series of icons appeared above the taskbar. I have done something accidentally that puts all of the icons on the taskbar. There must be some command to consolidate taskbar icons or hide taskbar icons but Windows 8.1 has hidden them.

Whenever I try to access my documents or any other file in windows explorer through the taskbar or the start button it won't open. I can clearly see the miniature previews open on the taskbar button but I can't see the window itself in full view when I click on it. Is there anything I can do about this besides recovering to an earlier point?
t's very simple, in a Metro app, move your mouse on the top of the screen to show the title bar, then move your mouse quickly to the bottom of your screen, and BAM
The taskbar at the bottom of my screen is unresponsive for the last week, despite the fact that I've shut down and restarted my pc many times. It is extremely annoying to switch between windows without the use of the taskbar; I need to go back to the desktop and click from there. I'm using Windows 8.1.
Is there a way to make it so Windows 8.1 does not show any of the Modern Apps in the taskbar?
For instance, I like to keep NotePad8, Weather and some others running, but I don't want them taking up Taskbar realestate since (as far as I'm aware at least), those Modern apps will remain open until I close them for good by moving to the upper left part of the screen.
I suspect there's probably something I could do in the registry, and if there is, maybe someone could attach a .reg file for me.
I'm also attaching a screencap of what I'm talking about.
brand new computer, i installed my normal program (office 2013, vs.net 2013, sql developer 2014, stardock start 8 and some other basic stuff etc)
i have this computer and google chrome pinned to the task bar.
if i left click either of them, they take 10+ seconds to open. I can run either from a short cut on the desktop or anywhere else and they both open instantly.
i can fix this behavior by right clicking the task bar and clicking lock the task bar. now both chrome and this computer open instantly for about 1 min. eventually they both go back to 10 seconds. i can then right click and do unlock the task bar and it fixes it for a min etc.
i think it might have something to do with office. i'm going to try to uninstall that and reinstall and see if it works. the little pop up messages in the upper right corner for "you have an email" are also very slow when i click on it to open the email in outlook.
My husband has an HP Envy desktop running Windows 8 with a new HP 23tm Touch Screen Monitor. For the last couple of weeks, sometimes when he lowers an open browser to the task bar, he can no longer bring it back up. It show the small preview and it is still open but it won't go enlarge. Right click, left click, close then open, it's just done. At first restarting the computer worked. He found that when it happens he can switch to a different browser and that will work. When he has a browser open on the desktop and tries to open another program it opens but stays frozen to the taskbar. Lower the browser and it still wont enlarge. This seems to happen when it goes into screen save mode. We ran all checks (drivers, disk, virus) and ran all updates.
