Sony VAIO - Fan Working On Maximum After Installing Windows 8.1
Oct 18, 2013I have just installed windows 8.1 on my sister's pink VAIO laptop
Everything works well, except that CPU fan which is working on maximum speed and is very loud.
I know this is completely software or driver related, but I cannot figure out what driver update might solve this issue.
Audio :: Change (reduce) Maximum Volume?
Sep 3, 2013So, the system volume in the system tray goes from 1-100. 1 is comfortable. 3 is loud. 6 is ear-splitting.
Is there anyway I can redefine the values for the system volume and set the maximum to like... 10?
Any time I hit the volume buttons on my keyboard to lower the volume, it goes from 1 to 0 and I can't hear anything, so I hit the volume up button and it goes from 0 to 3 and it's way too loud.
Right now, I have the volume set to about 3 most of the time, with individual apps' volume controls set really low (like a game set to volume "0.5" out of 100).
This is just ridiculous. There must be a way to redefine the value for the system volume. Some settings file I can edit or something, if not a nice GUI method.

Jul 31, 2014OK, what I want to do is the same that a lot of users that have their smartphones (Android OS), is change the original DPI o screen resolution (force a different scale/resolution) For example: what I'm trying to say of Android OS is when you want more space avaible on your desktop or the objects/texts/sidebar/icons/etc... looks like smaller than before, you just need to go to this directory (/system) and edit the file (build.prop) and finally locate the line called (ro.sf.lcd_density=xxx) and change the original density number of your screen's device by other smaller; and when you'll restart the device you'll have the same os similar size's desktop of one Note 3 in your SGS3 mini.
So, in resume. I would like to have a 1920x1080 (for example, or smaller I don't know what resolution is correct for my case), from my actual resolution of my laptop that it's 1280x800 pixels.
And for more details:
- Windows 8.1 Pro (x86)
- Resolution 1280x800 (15,4") and 16:10
- Graphic Adapter Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950 (Intel GMA 945 GM)
- Only the original monitor (laptop), not an external monitor
Maintenance :: CPU Speed To Always Stay At Maximum Frequency?
Aug 7, 2014What software (besides high performance mode in windows control panel) can lock the CPU at it's highest frequency?
My CPU is Intel Celeron Quad Core 2.00Ghz but it has a "burst" frequency up to 2.41Ghz (similar to turbo boost) and I would like it to stay at it's highest frequency since I have no worries about overheating (never goes above 42* C at full load).
The problem is the speed constantly changes between 2.00Ghz 2.03Ghz 2.07Ghz (and so on etc... in between 2.00Ghz and 2.41Ghz). And my browser speed constantly goes up and down webpages stalling and going fast causing stuttering so I wonder what software can remedy this little problem?
Or if there is some kind of overclocking software that would do something similar to locking the frequency? Tried all kinds of FSB-related tools but nada so far.

Jan 23, 2013On Windows 8, from time to time, all of my USB devices suddenly stop working, and the systray notifies that my "USB devices are not recognized." A reboot rectifies the problem, but the problem happens about once or twice a week.
Just a few weeks prior I had all of my USB devices going to a powered hub, which then was plugged into my computer. I happened to change motherboards from a Biostar 770E to an Asus M5A97 R2.0, which has plenty of USB ports. I hadn't bothered to eliminate the hub yet, and just as with the old motherboard, this one exhibited the "device not recognized" error. Ah ha, I thought! My USB hub has gone south.
So I threw it in the garbage, and plugged all of my USB devices directly into the motherboard (USB 3.0 portable drive, Logitech M705 wireless mouse, Belkin Wireless adapter, printer, and Remote Wonder. So I was quite surprised today when my USB devices dumped out, and Windows messaged me that my "USB devices are not recognized." I should note that I have installed AMD chipset drivers from the Asus website, as the board was quite unstable without them. With the Biostar, I opted not to install third party chipset drivers and it ran fine without them.
Setup Installation :: Bluetooth Not Recognized Windows 8
Jan 10, 2013I have a tablet that I installed Windows 8 Pro on.
Actually, I have installed Windows 8 Pro on 2 of these same tablets with the same problem.
They both have bluetooth and the bluetooth is on...and Windows 8 installs a driver for the bluetooth, but there is no bluetooth icon down by the clock in the systray.
From my understanding of Windows, if that bluetooth icon is not in the systray, something is not configuired right.
I can use a USB bluetooth dongle, and after it installs those drivers the bluetooth icon is present the systray. So, it likes the dongle. But, I don't know what the issue can be with the onboard bluetooth.

Jul 27, 2014Few days ago I bought a new Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E540. It has two USB3.0 ports and one USB2.0. I bought the machine without OS and installed Windows 8.1 Pro(x64) myself. Everything seems to be working fine except when I want to use My WD Elements 1TB external HDD in USB 3.0 port. It just doesn't get recognized. In USB 2.0 port it works fine.
What I've gathered and tried so far :
- Device manager does not show anything not even Unknown Device , yet my USB 3.0 Kingston pendrive works fine out of the box in the same slot
- I'm pretty sure the USB power is not the issue because the WD HDD , when plugged, starts blinking for a while , then lights up fulltime and i can feel and hear the drive spinning
- I've disabled USB selective suspend in my Power plan
- I've disabled Fast Startup
- In msconfig , im stuck at "Selective startup" (if changed it doesnt even let me APPLY and switches back to Selective right after I close/change tab in msconfig, I tried doing it in safe mode , same thing)
Using my harddrive in USB3.0 speed is essential for me.
Setup Installation :: Windows Recovery Media Not Recognized
Aug 22, 2014All of a sudden I can't reliably play any video media on my Win 8 64bit computer -- was working fine yesterday and AFAIK nothing (other than perhaps Windows automatic updates) changed. My first thought was to try and restore but even though I'm sure I created a restore point it tells me there isn't one. Sigh.
Okay, so then I try to perform a reset (but keeping all my files) and it tells me some files are missing and to insert my recovery media. All well and good, I actually have that (and know where it is) but when I insert the disk it tells me it is NOT a recovery disk.
It is, of course, precisely that -- a Windows 8 Recovery Media for Windows 8 Products 64 bit. I am running an official copy of Win 8 (well, 8.1, but I have no media for that since it was a free update). Yes, it's OEM (Dell) but that shouldn't make a difference. And, more importantly, what I am to do now?

My computer stopped recognizing the wireless networks at my university - oddly enough, some other networks elsewhere can be found (although I cannot test if I can actually connect to them, since they are passworded/not mine).
I followed the 3 steps of Network Posting Tips
Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector showed nothing: Connection - Broadcom 802.11n network card - NA, everything under Wireless and Addresses also NA. No networks.
My home adsl modem works.
Windows 8.1 Upgrade - RAID5 ReFS Volume Has Not Been Recognized
Oct 30, 2013Have finished upgrading to Windows 8.1 and my RAID-5 ReFS volume has NOT yet been recognized. It was not available in "This PC" after the upgrade... and was still not available after using the ReFS registry hack. After applying the hack and restarting the computer, the only change was the System Reserved portion of my C drive became visible.
Under Administrative Tools> Computer Management> Disk Management, the drives in question are visible as a single RAID-5 volume but Status shows "failed", the file system entry is empty, and the drive letter is absent showing a red "x" icon.
Currently downloading the latest chipset, SATA AHCI, and graphics drivers for my mobo. Will update once those have been installed.

Dvd Movies Sometimes Aren't Recognized
Oct 15, 2013At first I thought maybe it was the one movie(battleship), but after subsequent testing with different dvd movies, I have to ask, is it normal for the dvd drive to sometimes not recognize theres a disc loaded?
I've got cyberlink power dvd 9.0, which has a dvd movie playback codec.. so its not a software issue.
I've also got vlc media player which comes with a dvd movie playback codec, so again, not a software issue
Could this be my drive showing signs of premature impending failure on a machine just under a year old? or is this windows stuffing up and not recognizing theres a disc loaded?

Jun 27, 2014when plugging in my seagate freeagent hard drive i get the message "USB device not recognized. I have been to device manager and it appears as "unknown USB device (device descriptor request failed)". I have tried uninstalling it and reinstalling, checked for new drivers/updates.

Jul 16, 2014My Acer Aspire A7600U-UR24 came with windows 8. I made a recovery drive by choosing "create recovery drive" in windows 8. After making the drive i installed windows 8.1 from DVD. Some time later I tried to restore it back to factory with my recovery usb. Every time I try I get "windows cannot find a system image on this computer" even though my flash drive is plugged in. I tried booting from the drive, doesn't seem to work. Not sure if my windows 8.1 version not being activated has anything to do with it (I installed 8.1 on 2 computers from the same dvd didn't realize i couldn't do that) . but I think I should still be able to boot from the drive.I was thinking if the problem is my flash drive, can I somehow transfer the system image from one flash drive to another?

Jun 10, 2014I recently bought a cheap USB Hub off eBay. I plugged it in and connected my devices and it always works.
However, about 75% of the time when Win 8 boots, I get about a dozen "USB connect/disconnect" sounds and a window that says "USB Device not recognized". (sometimes 3 or 4 of these windows)
I've searched for this issue but every post that I find provides a recommendation for a USB device that is not working. None of these suggestions applies because after all the boot noise, the hub and it's devices work. It just seems like Win 8 is having trouble recognizing the Hub but keeps trying and eventually succeeds.
The Hub is plugged into a USB 2 port with a scroll wheel mouse and a Dymo LabelWriter 400 connected to the hub.

Apr 7, 2014Installed windows 8 on blank HD. Version was enterprise. Went through installation process, then discover that the wireless adaptor (laptop, built in) wasn't being recognized FULL stop by windows. I tried a few things. In the device manager, the wireless adaptor is not shown. However, after updating the device list, it shows one unknown device.
I looked through the preloaded drivers for wireless devices, but all of them were for USB ethernet/wireless adaptors, which as I recall from my previous installation of windows was not the type of driver that the device was using. I've also gone through the automates troubleshooting, etc, but nowhere is it even acknowledged that the device is even there. Now, my initial thinking is that it is indeed something to do with the drivers, but I'm not sure if I can find the needed ones. I'll upload more detailed information about my setup if it would be useful.
Kms Activation And Booting Windows 8 From Memory?
Mar 27, 2013i installed w8 pro to a vhd. used kmspico portable 4.3 to activate. activated ok.
i boot the same vhd from memory ( using firadisk & grub4dos ) it shows 'not activated'.
if i rerun kmspico portable while w8 is booted from memory, it shows activated.
(the vhd on the hdd remains untouched when it is booted from memory), so if i reboot the same vhd again (not from memory) it remains activated.
booting from memory seems to change the activation status.

Nov 20, 2013Over the past three weeks or so, there have been probably seven times my wireless USB Nexus Silent Mouse has not been recognized on cold computer startups (usually morning). Windows 8 (Pro x64) throws up a message that a USB device wasn't recognized, and I don't see a mouse cursor. Unplugging and replugging the USB mouse's stick, which is in a port on the front of the computer, solves it. The mouse driver is up to date, changing USB ports hasn't made a difference and the batteries are fine (and have been changed).

Sep 23, 2013I have a TSST 208DN DVD drive installed in a Win 8 Pro Toshiba C855 machine. I am no longer able to use the drive.
The problem began with my always having to reinstall the drivers upon reboot. I found a solution, or so I thought, that advised me to delete my upper and lower filters entries in the registry. I only had an LowerFilters entry for AnyDVD. I deleted it and can no longer use the drive.
Dev Mgr shows drive with yellow excl. triangle (see image #1 below) and this msg under the general tab of properties - Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19) (see image #2 below). I have drivers from MS and Toshiba installed (see image #3 below)

I have already uninstalled and reinstalled and rebooted many, many times. These are my current registry entries:

I have uninstalled and reinstalled AnyDVD. I have put back in the LowerFilters key and deleted it and rebooted many, many times. The registry entries look like those on my other laptop with the exception of lowerfilters set to AnyDVD and upperfilters set to the manufacturer's driver (GEARaspiWDM) and that machine works just fine - for about 10 minutes and then overheats and shuts down - it's a Dell - but that's another story.
Audio :: Headphones Not Recognized In Playback Devices
Jan 16, 2014I was watching a TV show in my headphones, plugged it out for about an hour, plugged it back in during which time my Dell Inspiron 15 would have gone to sleep about 4 times.. I plug it back in after an hour and the music plays through the speakers and I looked up all solutions. None of them work. Checked my audio drives, disabled the speakers and enabled them back.. It is just a week old, my laptop.
