Hardware Drivers :: DVD Drive No Longer Recognized
Sep 23, 2013
I have a TSST 208DN DVD drive installed in a Win 8 Pro Toshiba C855 machine. I am no longer able to use the drive.
The problem began with my always having to reinstall the drivers upon reboot. I found a solution, or so I thought, that advised me to delete my upper and lower filters entries in the registry. I only had an LowerFilters entry for AnyDVD. I deleted it and can no longer use the drive.
Dev Mgr shows drive with yellow excl. triangle (see image #1 below) and this msg under the general tab of properties - Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19) (see image #2 below). I have drivers from MS and Toshiba installed (see image #3 below)

I have already uninstalled and reinstalled and rebooted many, many times. These are my current registry entries:

I have uninstalled and reinstalled AnyDVD. I have put back in the LowerFilters key and deleted it and rebooted many, many times. The registry entries look like those on my other laptop with the exception of lowerfilters set to AnyDVD and upperfilters set to the manufacturer's driver (GEARaspiWDM) and that machine works just fine - for about 10 minutes and then overheats and shuts down - it's a Dell - but that's another story.

I connected a hard drive to my PC. I was able to read/write to it just fine. In fact, I've used it various times in the past. I just tried connecting it again now, and the drive is not showing up on Windows 8.1 at all. It's not being detected.
I connected the drive to a Mac to see if it was the drive, but it wasn't: the Mac was able to read it just fine.
I've had a similar situation in the past with this machine, where my iPhone was, seemingly out of nowhere, no longer recognized by the system. Plugging it in would register on the phone, but the PC wouldn't acknowledge its existence.
I'm completely at a loss as to why this can be. Other drives connect to the PC just fine (in fact, I have another one connected now, as I write this, backing up some data).

My portable hard drive stops showing up all of a sudden. It is connected to a USB hub. When I go to 'Disk Management' in 'Computer Management', the hard drive shows up as Unknown - Not Initialised. Also this hard drive works while not using the USB hub, and the USB hub works as well with other devices.

I built my computer a couple weeks ago and am running windows 8.1. I currently have a 128gb SSD and a 1tb internal hard drive (WD Caviar Blue) I obviously used the ssd to boot windows and currently windows is detecting my 1tb hard drive but it is not usable. I have tried diskpart commands to clean and format and I keep getting the error message "DiskPart has encountered an error: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error". The hard drive was brand new and cables are fine. This is what everything looks like..

I have Silicon Power Blaze B20 flash drive, which is not recognized by my desktop PC's both USB 3.0 ports. The flash drive's light blinks when pugged in, but no reaction from PC's side. I have tried to plug cord between flash drive and PC, but no change. It does recognize the device when plugged in any other USB 2.0 port. And the device is being recognized by other computer's both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports, so I assume it is PC's fault, but what it is. My PC's USB 3.0 ports do recognize any other USB 3.0 devices - my external HDD, other USB 3.0 devices but this drive.

Having problem with a USB drive constantly disappearing and not being recognized?
My current solution is to delete drivers in device manager then wait until they load again. This is a temporary solution. I am using a VivoTab ME400C tablet pc with full Windows 8 in a public environment as a kiosk and users are exporting data via the usb. I cannot ask people to constantly delete drivers before they try an export to a pen drive.

My Acer Aspire A7600U-UR24 came with windows 8. I made a recovery drive by choosing "create recovery drive" in windows 8. After making the drive i installed windows 8.1 from DVD. Some time later I tried to restore it back to factory with my recovery usb. Every time I try I get "windows cannot find a system image on this computer" even though my flash drive is plugged in. I tried booting from the drive, doesn't seem to work. Not sure if my windows 8.1 version not being activated has anything to do with it (I installed 8.1 on 2 computers from the same dvd didn't realize i couldn't do that) . but I think I should still be able to boot from the drive.I was thinking if the problem is my flash drive, can I somehow transfer the system image from one flash drive to another?

I moved File History from one drive (E) to another (F) and although FH shows in F drive, it isn't recognized in "select a drive" in FH. The only option shown is a new drive (G) I installed for Media Recording only and the FH folder isn't there at all. How do I get FH the F drive to be recognized to enable for backup?

I recently became the proud owner of a Windows 8 BSOD. I did a refresh and afterwards I can not access my C: drive. I have gone in to the Properties Tab and tried to change the writes/ take ownership for Administrators and Administrator and applied them. While applying them I get a lot off pop up boxes from " File is in use" to " Object can not be parsed" etc. I need access to the entire C: drive. I had it before the refresh and now I can not do anything at all.

I am reading up about optimizing of SSD drives and I'm seeing that Windows 8 is supposed to be pretty good with automatically deciding whether to optimize or defragment drives based on what they are (SSD vs HDD). But I have a problem. I just bought an SSD but under the Optimization menu it is showing up as a Hard Drive.
It's a brand new Samsung 840 EVO 500GB and I'm going to be using it solely for music and movies as an external drive. I also bought an Anker external SATA III to USB 3.0 enclosure. I have the drive recognized and everything under the File Explorer but I'm just a little nervous that it's listed as a Hard Drive under the Optimization menu. How can I get Windows to see that it's in fact an SSD?

I recently bought a cheap USB Hub off eBay. I plugged it in and connected my devices and it always works.
However, about 75% of the time when Win 8 boots, I get about a dozen "USB connect/disconnect" sounds and a window that says "USB Device not recognized". (sometimes 3 or 4 of these windows)
I've searched for this issue but every post that I find provides a recommendation for a USB device that is not working. None of these suggestions applies because after all the boot noise, the hub and it's devices work. It just seems like Win 8 is having trouble recognizing the Hub but keeps trying and eventually succeeds.
The Hub is plugged into a USB 2 port with a scroll wheel mouse and a Dymo LabelWriter 400 connected to the hub.

My Seagate GoFlex 500 isn't showing up in Windows. Disk Management sees it, but there's no feasible option there. It's not a blank drive, so I can't make a new simple volume, only delete it.
I have important data on there. What gives?

Over the past three weeks or so, there have been probably seven times my wireless USB Nexus Silent Mouse has not been recognized on cold computer startups (usually morning). Windows 8 (Pro x64) throws up a message that a USB device wasn't recognized, and I don't see a mouse cursor. Unplugging and replugging the USB mouse's stick, which is in a port on the front of the computer, solves it. The mouse driver is up to date, changing USB ports hasn't made a difference and the batteries are fine (and have been changed).

In the process of installing a new Win 8.1 machine, going mostly OK, but I have a WD Passport Ultra that is not working with it at all. I plug it in, it lights up and spins, but never shows up as a drive either in "This PC" or in disk management; nothing at all in device manager either. I would have said defective unit, but it works perfectly on all my other installs including Vista, 7, 8.0 and even a Mac! Don't know what to do here, I can certainly access the files on another machine and transfer, but I would like to use this drive with the new machine...

Recently my "PS to PC Converter" USB device, as shown in image was not recognized by my laptop. It was working fine as of yesterday, where I was playing FIFA with my friend. Then today when I plug it in, it says USB device not recognized even though I can still on the analog but the controller is not detected by the game. Other games that I use to play with controllers are also not detecting the device. I kept reinstalling the driver but still the same message. Restarting computer, turning it off for a few minutes did not solve my problem too. I'm pretty sure my USB ports are fine as my mouse, keyboard and hard drives are working in all of the USB ports.
EDIT: I check the Device Manager and found a yellow exclamation mark on Other Devices named "Unknown device", I check the properties and says Code 43 on the status. I Enable/Disable it, still the same message.

Few days ago I bought a new Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E540. It has two USB3.0 ports and one USB2.0. I bought the machine without OS and installed Windows 8.1 Pro(x64) myself. Everything seems to be working fine except when I want to use My WD Elements 1TB external HDD in USB 3.0 port. It just doesn't get recognized. In USB 2.0 port it works fine.
What I've gathered and tried so far :
- Device manager does not show anything not even Unknown Device , yet my USB 3.0 Kingston pendrive works fine out of the box in the same slot
- I'm pretty sure the USB power is not the issue because the WD HDD , when plugged, starts blinking for a while , then lights up fulltime and i can feel and hear the drive spinning
- I've disabled USB selective suspend in my Power plan
- I've disabled Fast Startup
- In msconfig , im stuck at "Selective startup" (if changed it doesnt even let me APPLY and switches back to Selective right after I close/change tab in msconfig, I tried doing it in safe mode , same thing)
Using my harddrive in USB3.0 speed is essential for me.

So I have a WD external HD with all of my research data as well as some text books and other important things on there and for some reason I got an I/O error and after that the drive does not show on the computer anymore. The computer recognizes that there is a drive there and will read that it is a WD passport but cannot tell the size of the disk and will not register it as an external drive whose media I can explore and work with. What is wrong and how can I retrieve the data?

HP's support site for the specific model M6-1035 lists no driver for the webcam. it was there under windows 7 but I don't recall ever deliberately installing a driver for it - I assumed win7 had it.
Windows 8.1 does not. nothing in 'devices', nothing under device manager, and no driver listed on the HP support site. the latter is not surprising since they don't provide a host of drivers for the laptop.
No keyboard-specific drivers [like for the function keys etc], wrong firmware for optical, and other small things.
Any generic cam driver that will function?

When I switched to a Windows 8 laptop from my MacBook, my iPod Classic is not recognized by the Win 8 machine. I've tried to copy and paste music files from the HD to the iPod, but once the iPod is ejected, no music shows up on the iPod. I've downloaded iTunes, which seems to recognize when the iPod is plugged in, but I haven't been able to move any music from the HD to the iPod.

I am running Win 8.1 Pro 64 bit. I have a WD "red" HDD connected externally in a NexStar-NX box. The NexStar supports USB 3.0 and eSATA. The USB 3.0 connection works fine and shows up in WIN 8.1 disk manager and all files are accessable. When I use a eSATA cable (have tried 2 different ones) the HDD is not recognized by Win 8.1. Win 7 HP 64 bit sees the eSATA connection and all works well. The HDD, when using the eSATA connection, shows up in the post boot screen as I have the HDD listed in the BIOS. I would like to use the eSATA connection as I'm short of USB 3.0 ports on my ASUS Maximus V Gene mob. Is this a Win 8.1 quirk?

I work at a hotel, and we are having issues with our public computer (Acer Aspire XC-603G desktop) connecting to the internet. As it seemed like an issue in the wall, I decided the easiest way to fix it would be to buy a wifi USB adapter (NETGEAR N300) and just use that instead. However, when I try to install the driver from the included CD, it keeps giving me an "access is denied" error.
The account I'm using says it has administrator privileges, though that's been giving me issues as well. The person who initially set up the computer only set up one account, which anyone could use. I added another, gave it the administrator rights, and removed them from the original. However, even though it says the new account is an administrator account, messages often pop up and say that I can't do what I'm trying to do because I only have standard privileges.

I have a flash drive that I previously used in public computer lab (where many viruses linger) the other day to do my work. As I got home, the flash drive isn't working anymore, saying "USB Device not Recognized". I also noticed that it really took me a while to finally, safely remove it from the computer lab's PC. So I actually wonder if it actually removed my flash drive properly.
On Device Manager, it says "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)".On the Properties, the device status says "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43) -- A request for the USB device descriptor failed."
My flash drive is a Kingston Flash Drive DataTraveler (DT100) 16GB, and my PC is running on Windows 8.1.
Things I have tried:
- Shut down my PC, unplugged power and removed battery, waited for a while, booted my PC and try plugging in again.
- On Device Manager, uninstalled it and scanned for hardware changes, it still returns as "Unknown USB Device".
- On Device Manager, I clicked "Update Driver Software..." and it returns me a message saying "The best driver software for your device is already installed".
- Unfortunately, when I visited Kingston's website to check if there is driver for this specific flash drive, there isn't any... "There are no downloads or drivers available for this product".
- Used Windows 8's Troubleshooting tool. It only detected my problem, but was unable to fix it.
- I also tried plugging it to other devices that are running on Windows XP, Vista and 7, none does any better.

I have to work across three PCs, for which I use a KVM switch. But while I'm on PC 2 or 3 I like to make notes on PC 1, so I use a Bluetooth keyboard and a second monitor which is always on PC1. This has been working fine for weeks.
PC1 is Windows 8.1. Every few days I've had to reconnect the keyboard by going to Bluetooth, detecting it and pairing it again. Windows gave me a code to type into the keyboard and I was away, no problem.
Since Wednesday (23rd) I've been unable to do this. The PC detects the keyboard after a longer search than before. It pairs with the keyboard and says it's connected but the keyboard doesn't work. When I return to the Bluetooth screen, it's gone from the list of devices. I've replaced the keyboard batteries and tested it with my iPad, where it works perfectly well. So my sequence is:
type Bluetooth at Windows home pagesearch for devicesthe keyboard is foundclick Pairwait ...'Enter the passcode for your keyboard; you might need to enter the same passcode into the keyboard'ClickTtry entering a passcode on itcode comes upput it in. 'connecting' then 'Bluetooth 3.0 keyboard connected'; graphic shows still searching for devicesafter close Bluetooth Devices window, keyboard doesn't workReturn to Bluetooth screswitch keyboard off and on, it disappears from devices list

After upgrading to 8.1 all of my previously listed devices are no longer listed under devices... in fact there are no devices listed. I can also not add a device. If I look in device manager they are listed there and if I go to print the printer shows up and I can print. The screenshot below shows what I see when I open "Devices and Printers" in control panel. The biggest issue is not being able to add devices like Bluetooth speaker.
