Cannot Access C Drive Any Longer

Jan 15, 2013

I recently became the proud owner of a Windows 8 BSOD. I did a refresh and afterwards I can not access my C: drive. I have gone in to the Properties Tab and tried to change the writes/ take ownership for Administrators and Administrator and applied them. While applying them I get a lot off pop up boxes from " File is in use" to " Object can not be parsed" etc. I need access to the entire C: drive. I had it before the refresh and now I can not do anything at all.

Browsers/Mail :: Can No Longer Access Outlook Account Using IE10 Browser?

Oct 8, 2013

For some reason or other I can no longer access my email account Outlook.com (known formerly as Hotmail.com) when using the Internet Explorer10 browser, it will not go to the sign in window, although I can access the account by using the "InPrivate Browsing" option in IE10.

Not a huge problem as I can and do use another browser most of the time. I am curious as to why this has occurred more than anything?

Network / Sharing :: Can No Longer Access Internet - Failed To Connect To Windows Service

Jul 23, 2014

I can no longer access the internet from my other laptop.

When I boot up it says "Failed to connect to a windows service".

I believe that the computer cannot locate my wireless card.

I am told that there are no available connections.

When I try to open Network and Sharing Centre, it crashes.

There are no exclamation makes in Device Manager and everything else seems to be working ok.

I just cannot find any networks and appears to be something to do with my wireless card - which has worked perfectly until yesterday when I turned on my laptop and found this problem.

Hardware Drivers :: DVD Drive No Longer Recognized

Sep 23, 2013

I have a TSST 208DN DVD drive installed in a Win 8 Pro Toshiba C855 machine. I am no longer able to use the drive.

The problem began with my always having to reinstall the drivers upon reboot. I found a solution, or so I thought, that advised me to delete my upper and lower filters entries in the registry. I only had an LowerFilters entry for AnyDVD. I deleted it and can no longer use the drive.

Dev Mgr shows drive with yellow excl. triangle (see image #1 below) and this msg under the general tab of properties - Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19) (see image #2 below). I have drivers from MS and Toshiba installed (see image #3 below)

image #3

I have already uninstalled and reinstalled and rebooted many, many times. These are my current registry entries:

image#4

I have uninstalled and reinstalled AnyDVD. I have put back in the LowerFilters key and deleted it and rebooted many, many times. The registry entries look like those on my other laptop with the exception of lowerfilters set to AnyDVD and upperfilters set to the manufacturer's driver (GEARaspiWDM) and that machine works just fine - for about 10 minutes and then overheats and shuts down - it's a Dell - but that's another story.

Hardware Drivers :: USB Connected Hard Drive No Longer Recognized?

Feb 24, 2014

I connected a hard drive to my PC. I was able to read/write to it just fine. In fact, I've used it various times in the past. I just tried connecting it again now, and the drive is not showing up on Windows 8.1 at all. It's not being detected.

I connected the drive to a Mac to see if it was the drive, but it wasn't: the Mac was able to read it just fine.

I've had a similar situation in the past with this machine, where my iPhone was, seemingly out of nowhere, no longer recognized by the system. Plugging it in would register on the phone, but the PC wouldn't acknowledge its existence.

I'm completely at a loss as to why this can be. Other drives connect to the PC just fine (in fact, I have another one connected now, as I write this, backing up some data).

Network / Sharing :: Cannot Access C Drive From MAC

Apr 16, 2013

I have an HP elite 64 bit on Windows Pro. I also have an Imac 64 bit etc.

I used to be able to access my c drive from the imac, now I cannot. It says I cannot access the folder because of permissions. I have full control to all, and I have all sharing turned on in Windows and the Mac. What could be causing this if the drive is shared? Like I said, I used to be able to do it fine, I can see it and there are certain files within the c drive I CAN access but nothing that I NEED to access. What is accessible now is more "public". I can see and access my externals as well it is just the C drive that is tossing the error.

E Drive Not Accessible - Access Is Denied

Aug 25, 2013

I originally had a RAID 1 and windows 8 pro 64 bit installed. I had a boot error and could no longer boot into windows. I purchased two new HDDs and created a RAID 1. Loaded Windows 8 Pro with no problem. Then I added the original two HDD so as to retrieve data. I went into the RAID BIOS and took the old HDD off RAID configuration. I then disconnected one of the original RAID HDD and now have only one of the old HDD connected to the motherboard.

In Disk Management, the disk I am trying to access is listed as DISK 1 and divided into System Reserved (D, 350 MB NTFS, Healthy (Active , Primary Partition) and (E 931.17 GB NTFS, Healthy (Primary Partition). But when I try to access the E: drive, I receive the following "E: is not accessible. Access is denied."

Any way to getting access to E: I would like to retrieve data.

Network / Sharing :: Not Getting Access To Shared Drive

Jul 24, 2014

I'm setting up a little media center (running Win 7) to connect to my TV. I was thinking about sharing one of the drives on the media center so I can access it from all my computers and put pictures, music and movies on it as needed.

I went to Advanced Sharing, checked the Share this folder box and put full control on Everyone. Nevertheless I'm getting an error when I'm trying to access the drive from my laptop (which is running 8.1). Says that Windows cannot access the drive. I have disabled password protections and all that but still nothing.

It does seem however that if I create a folder inside the Media center drive and share it then I can access it with no problems and add files and do what I want.

Perhaps that is what I'll need to do to bypass the problem? But is there anyway I can access a shared drive? What else to try?

Accounts :: How To Grant Read Only Access Of Drive To User

Aug 18, 2014

I have a admin account and a normal user account say XXX.

I have a drive (say Z), to which I want to restrict access to the user XXX. The user should be able to read the documents and view the videos in the drive. However, he should not be able to delete/modify the files in the drive or write new files to the drive.

I have gone through: Permissions - Allow or Deny Access to Users and Groups in Windows 8. I'm not comfortable with command prompts or registry keys, so I tried option three (Change Access Permissions in Advanced Security Properties).

By default, the user had permission for "Read, Read & execute, List folder contents" only. However, even with these I found that the user could delete and modify the files/folders in drive Z. So, I denied the following: "Create file/folders, write attributes/extended attributes, delete subfolders/files". This seems to serve my purpose.

Now I wish to know two things:

1) Am I doing the right thing or messing up something?
2) There was a radio button "Only apply these permissions to objects and/or containers within this container". This I had left unchecked. Should I check this? The window (see attachment) clearly states that these permissions apply to "this folder, subfolder and files". Is this just a redundant option?

Attempted To Run Ubuntu Alongside Windows 8 - Cannot Access C Drive?

Jul 16, 2013

I've recently unsuccessfully attempted to run ubuntu alongside windows 8. Ubuntu didn't seem to be working, so I decided to just go back to windows 8. However, when I did so my computer decided to get stuck on the loading screen for windows. I left that there for about 2 hours, then decided to go through and see if I could change anything in bios in order to fix it. Nothing worked. I pressed f8 when I was booting up, and got to the recovery option.

When I tried to recover, it told me that my hard drive was locked, and I should unlock it before attempting to recover any files. So while trying to install ubuntu I somehow managed to lock my hard drive. I attempt to access my c: drive through command prompt, and it tells me that the C: drive does exist, but does not contain any files. Is there anyway to grant myself access to the hard drive, or am I going to have to wipe it?

Access Denied To Drive After Switching SATA Ports

I have 3 disks in my computer, of which 2 are SSDs.

I swapped the SATA ports between one SSD and the HDD so as to give the SSD a SATA port with maximum 6gb/s transfer speed, and now the access to the HDD is denied. The drive letters are correct, as they should be.

The user (myself, admin) did not change.

What can be done about it? I already tried to check the ownership of the drive and says STEVECOMPUTER/Administrators, which looks good, as my user account is an admin. Still, I have no access.

Drive Access And Programs Become Unresponsive - Reboot Fixes

Nov 30, 2012

I have a retail version of Windows 8 pro. All updates have been applied. I have a 128g SSD and several SATA3 hard drives in my system. Often I'll be working on my PC and a program like photoshop or thunderbird or even explorer become unresponsive and greys out and sometimes if I wait long enough it comes back but only for a short while before it happens again.

Many times it will happen when I am accessing the file structure, i.e. file > open and other times it will happen in an explorer window when trying to access a random folder, i.e. I can browse the c:windows folder but not the c:windowssystem32, but after waiting a bit it shows up.

Sometimes this happens with other (non system) drives.

Also, when I try to open task mgr or event viewer or many built in OS executables I immediately get an error stating:

c:windowssystem32 askmgr.exe (or mmc.exe, etc.) The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion

A reboot fixes this problem, but only for a short while. It may even be that this only happens after coming back from sleep but I haven't spent enough time in front of the machine post-boot but pre-sleep to know for sure.

I have had some intermittent issues with coming back from sleep where either the monitors (video card is HD7870 and mobo is ASRock Z77 Pro 3 - firmware up to date) never initialize or I get the splash login screen but my usb keyboard doesn't recognize input to allow for the password prompt and the mouse cursor moves but clicking does nothing.

Does it sound like a mobo hardware issue with hybrid sleep? I like the hybrid sleep with my SSD for fast boot and wakes but I'm at a loss. Also, I had RTM before the retail version with all the same hardware and never had any of these issues.

One thought is maybe disconnecting a drive to see if its a bus issue where one drive is causing the others to become really slow reads/writes???

Oddly, my chrome browser never seems effected by this.I have also tried disabling my Avast AV s/w just to be sure it isn't that.

But this not the case if I copy/create a file in any of sub directories in C:. For example I can copy/create files to system32 or program files with any such problems.

My second problem is that I no longer get a popup when I connect a external HDD to my system. It doesn't even show up in "My Computer" I have to open up disk management and then assign a drive letter to the external HDD then only will it show up in File Explorer.

Security :: Windows 8 Drive - Access Folder On Mounted Disk Image?

Aug 27, 2013

I use O&O Disk Image 7.2 to make images of my Windows 8 drive. Occasionally I need to mount an image to access folders and files. One folder I can't access is my user folder. Windows 8.1 Boot Up Suddenly Longer?

Jun 17, 2014

I have a Lenovo y50 and it used to boot in 12 seconds, but recently started to take over 30 seconds to boot. I've had this laptop for around a week now. It happened ever since I reinstalled my nvidia driver. Im not sure if its just a coincidence that it happened at the time I reinstalled it. I made sure all traces of the driver were gone before reinstalling it. The loading circle in the beginning of the boot used to move smoothly but now it visibly lags and moves slowly. I've tried the "Clean up my PC" option and it still has the problem. Here is the event log:Link

I disabled fast boot and shut off the computer and then turned it on again(not restart). Then I enabled fast boot and now it boots at the time it did before. Very strange lol. Now it boots even faster, in around 10 seconds as opposed to 12.

EuP Function Is No Longer Working Under Windows 8.1

Dec 28, 2013

I recently upgraded to Windows 8.1 from Windows 7 and noticed my USB 3 WD Passport external hard drive stays powered on as well as my round LED's (Lock/Start/Reset). With Windows 7 I just enabled EuP in the bios and that powered everything down when I shut down including the LED's. Now with Windows 8.1 that function doesn't work. They all stay on. I tried disabling all the power functions in Power Management for the USB but still, the power stays on. For some reason the EuP enable function does not work like before. I believe its related to Windows 8.1 since it worked fine with Windows 7. For some reason they locked USB power after shutdown.

PS: I already tried resetting the bios to no effect.
