Windows 8 Boot Without Remembering Personal Settings
Aug 20, 2013
I have some strange issues when booting Windows 8.
1) Sometimes, the computer boots seemingly without remembering my personal settings, so it starts on the "Preparing Windows" screen. If I let it run, it continues to set up Windows giving me a 'fresh desktop' without my configurations on it. After a reboot, it's either back to normal, or 2) happens.
2) Other times, it doesn't correctly execute my msconfig, only booting very few programs.
Restarting always solves the issue, but it's rather annoying having to restart about half the times I boot the computer.

I have a micro-usb cable for charging my mouse that the cats chewed through. It was doing the device connect/disconnect sound over and over with an annoying popup. Oddly enough, the cable still works but now it shows as an "Unknown Device" in the Device Manager under "Other devices".
The way I did my cable management in the back of my desktop is I ran everything through a tube, so even though I have a replacement for that micro-usb, in order to remove it and replace it with the working one I'd have to spend so much time and effort. What's funny is the reason I did all of this cable management was because of the cats, I had all of my usb cords going through a separate piece of cardboard to where they plug in but they still managed to find an exposed area to chew.
So my solution was I replaced the connect/disconnect .wav with a .wav with no audio. The pop up is what is still giving me trouble though, every time it pops up it forgets that I set it to "Hide icon and notifications"
"USB Device not recognized: The last usb device you connected to this computer malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it" - How do I get this message to permanently shut up.
My printer has also been giving me a similar pop up but it's only once I boot since it's not turned on then. There has to be a better solution to either permanently tell Windows Explorer Notifications to simply resolve this error without having to stress replacing the cable with a fresh one that they'll probably also screw up.

I am running Windows 8 and Outlook 2010. I have created a profile for my company's Exchange Server. The set-up is correct because my username is recognized. However when I try to access Outlook, I get asked for my credentials by "Windows Security." It has the dots in the dialogue box indicating that there is a saved password. Unfortunately, I have no idea what that old password is and where it is coming from. When I try to overwrite it with the new and correct password and check the remember my password box, it just ignores it and redisplays the security message with the old password pre-filled. I am dead in the water with my corporate email which I don't need to add is not good.
I have deleted anything that might be an Outlook credential using the Control Panel. I have deleted my profile and started from scratch. I have also deleted my personal MSN account email and tried that but with the same results. There are some that suggest that the password is stored in the registry, but I know from experience not to mess with the registry without some professional advice, especially with a new operating system.

I have 5 screens, 3 screens connected to a display card, and 2 on motherboard.
When i was with windows 7, no problem at all for the past 2 years. Once upgraded to Windows 8.1, windows DOES recognise all 5 screens, however, it will revert back to a single screen and 800 x 600 resolution.
I will have to enable and reposition all screens again until the next restart.

This is a new computer and OS for me, so I may just not be familiar with how it is SUPPOSED to work. When we got the computer I loaded Office, Photoshop, Browsers, etc. I set up the tiles on the start menu. But since the computer rebooted (and every time since then), the tiles have disappeared and the computer acts like its the first time I've used Firefox ("do you want to make this your default browser?").
Each time I reboot, Word is still on the computer but it has to activate and set my initials as if I've never opened it on the computer before. The only hint of something I think I could do differently is that when I'm on the " PC Settings(?)" screen under Sync options it tells me I am logged into a temporary profile. I can't figure out how to change this though.

The present file format of these personal videos is: .3gp. When I try to play them in Xbox video I get this error message: Can't play because the item's file format isn't supported. Check the store to see if this item is available there. 40 apps open when I did check. Which app will play this .3gp format? I can visually play them in Windows Media Player but for some reason there's no sound & it's turned up to full volume.

Word documents open, but I can't delete, move, or open anything like pictures and media.
It says the file is damaged, windows can't read it, or it's corrupted.
I can't move any programs/stuff to a new folder, or the screen flashes dark blue then back again, with nothing changed
If I delete something, again, blue screen flash, nothing changes.
If I delete something while editing a picture (ex: selecting part of the picture then pressing "delete" key), nothing happens (Paint.NET - doubt this issue is from them).
My temp folder is extremely messed up as well. Link to my temp folder [URL] ....

I've upgraded from Windows 7 PC to Windows 8 Pro (not clean install) today and I can't now view my personal files in the new apps screen. E.g If I go into the photo app it says there are no pics available. I thought I'd lost the data but when searching around I noticed a folder had been created on the new desktop which was the same name as my PC name in Windows 7. Clicking into this folder took me to Users folder -> and my folders which contain all the music and photo files etc.
If I launch Explorer, On the left hand side of the Explorer screen (where it displays the Library docs) I am unable to select any of these or drag files to these from the folder described above. Also, when connecting my iPhone, it asks if I want to import my pics. I know all of these have already been imported but it doesn't recognise this and tries to import them all again, I assume into the new location in Windows 8.
Is this something to do with permissions. I've used my hotmail account to set up as a new Windows 8 profile and this has Admin rights. Or do I physically have to copy he data to the new location where personal library files are held in Windows 8.

I've booted into safe mode in windows 8.1 by setting the safe mode option in msconfig..
However, when I booted into safemode i realized that I've forgot my password because i usually use a pincode.
How to I get it out of safe boot again? - I've tried to access command prompt, but everything needs that password.
Is there any way to force it to boot up normally again?

Today when I played my favorite game ( entropia universe), I got a message from my game saying that I have low ram, I checked on the Ctrl alt del thing and I was shocked that only 3.8 gb ram was usable when i have 8 gb ram and using 64 bit system. So here comes to my first question... Why would this happen?
So I happened to follow a tutorial and turned on the maximum ram checkbox in the advanced settings in boot tab in msconfig. However when I first reboot I got the session 3 initialisation failed BSOD. The second time and third time and so on and so forth I got bad system config info, which turned my computer into a reboot loop. Second question, why would this happen?
My experience similar to this unlucky fellow : Win 8 BSOD : BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO (Details available)SOS
so I followed the guide in the thread and tried to recreate my BCD. I successfully got into the advanced setup options ( I think it is called this ?) by pressing shift +f8.
However I still failed as I was locked there. Every option including opening the command prompt is blocked because it said that operating these options needed administrative rights which I have in my hands. However the ASO said that it can't find any administrative accounts in my computer. Third question , why would this happen?
So now my computer fell into another loop. Whenever I started my computer it went into the ASO and wouldn't get away from it. And can't even see the lovely face in BSOD.
I am am using windows 8.1 in amd fx 8150 and 8 gb ram, computer was somehow normal with occasional freezing ( 1-2 times a month ).

I just got a refurbished ASUS K75DE laptop, and it came with Windows 8 on it. I am wanting to run a dual boot with Win7, so I disabled fast-boot just fine, and went into the UEFI BIOS and disabled the secure boot.
While I was there, I did like I have always done and set a BIOS boot-up password. I then proceed to boot to my Win7 installer USB Flash drive, but I was running low on battery power so I aborted the install and shut the computer down to try again later.
Now however when I get into BIOS to select boot priority, all options are grayed out except for system time and a few other non-essentials. At the bottom of the first BIOS screen it says "User Level : User" and I can't seem to find a way to reverse this issue. So now I'm stuck, can't boot to anything but the HDD because it is first by default.

After creating a UEFI bootable USB thumb drive with Rufus (using Windows 8.1 Enterprise ISO x64), for a Dell Optiplex 3010 (configured as UEFI only, no CSM, latest firmware version, Windows 8 installed), I didn't see a USB boot option, so I tried to add one manually. Unfortunately I erased the existing boot option (boot manager) by mistake. Although there were two boot options for PXE booting, the machine will not start anymore, even when there is an active WDS server on the network.
I also see Led's 2 and 3 lighting up, meaning according to the manual 'hardware ok but bios possibly damaged/corrupt'.
I understand I cannot start the machine from a bios boot disk because of GPT partitioning, and the UEFI USB boot disk I made might be corrupt (as it didn't show up as a boot option), however I don't understand why it won't boot from the PXE network card, as these boot options are still there.

My Dell Inspiron 660 is 2 months old. It came with Windows 8 preinstalled. My problem: I am trying to change the boot order so I can boot from CD ROM as a first option. I have tried using the "F" keys on boot, but it just ignores me and goes on to boot up. I have also tried the "Advanced Options > UEFI Firmware Settings" in "Change PC Settings" and got the same results. I spent some time on the phone with a Dell tech. After trying all the things I had already tried, he and his supervisor decided I must have a bad Motherboard. Does this sound right? Is there any way to repair this problem?

.I have an HP Pavilion Slimline PC desktop. It does not allow me to boot from CD/DVD drive or USB connection. Windows 8.1. I wish to be able to use the boot options cd/dvd and all the USB options. I can't use any of the options. I list bios setup options and suggestions given to me from articles but I'm not sure I'm afraid of error. I don't have that much experience in bios setup.
Articles have said in BIOS setup Security is to be disabled. I suppose Legacy remains disabled(?). It is suggested that I shutdown and reboot.
BIOS Setup > Storage > Boot Order has this list:
UEFI Boot Sources
Windows Boot Manager
USB Floppy/CD[code]....
At bottom of this Boot Order Window are the options: F5=disable Enter=drag F10=accept ESC=cancel
Windows Boot Manager at the the top stops all other options.beneath it. How does that 'drag' work. Don'tr I have to move 'Windows Boot Manager' to the bottom?
And move ATAPI CD/DVD drive to the top? of this UEFI boot sources list?
Is it true that if there is an error in the BIOS Boot Setup and Windows 8.1 does not boot, the BIOS Setup will come up instead so one can do a fix?

I had an issue with my Windows 8 where I was forced to reinstall it. I have completely wiped my SSD and reinstalled Windows 8 on it. However, now it will not let me pick my boot order. It is forcing me to use Windows Boot Manager as my Boot Option 1. If I use anything else, I just get a black screen with a blinking line cursor.
It didn't use to do this before I had to reinstall. I'm not sure how to fix this. It also will not let me choose F11 boot options, it always is forcing me to use Windows Boot Manager.
How do I make it so I can boot from whichever boot order I want, instead of using Boot Manager?

I have Kubuntu 13.10 and Windows 8.1 installed on separate drives on my computer. Dual-booting through the Linux bootloader works fine, as in I can boot either Windows 8.1 or Linux without incident. However, whenever I boot Windows, it resets itself to the highest boot priority, and always re-adds a boot entry if I remove it. My question is, how can I get it to stop doing this? I can temporarily fix it through Linux, but I'd really like to stop it permanently, as it's starting to become a pain.
EDIT: It turns out my problem was related to a duplicate entry for Ubuntu. If you're having this problem and have tried to install Linux a couple of times, check to make sure that you only have one entry for it.

I have a laptop which is not touch screen with Windows 8.1. I am trying to find where to maintain auto correct etc., such as adding words, capitalising at start of sentences, that sort of thing. I have done just as asked by various things online but I don't see what they say I should see I. I have attached a photo to explain it a little. When I get to this point I only see 'Spelling' below that is nothing. To be honest it is really stopping me using my laptop.

my default language setting (keyboard layout) is Swedish. For some reason Windows 8.1 changes this setting to English.
I have tried to install and then uninstall the English keyboard layout (so that Swedish is the only one available) but Windows doesn't care if the layout is actually installed or not. Here is a screenshot:

Windows changes this setting on a whim, it seems to happen the most when starting up the computer. I had this problem with Windows 8 as well.
