Feb 18, 2014Windows update has been really messing with my pc lately. I ran update and when it installed the updates my integrated mouse ended up not working. I rolled back update and installed the updates one by one and the one I ended up not installing was the camera codec pack. Now the problem I am having is that my touchscreen won't work. If I talk to HP support they do the most basic thing they can and then when they can't fix it they tell me that I have to ship it to them because hardware is broken.

1. Administrator
2. initial user
3. new user
So the initial user is the one you are forced to create when first setting up Windows 8.1. It's a local user meaning that I set it up without signing into a MSA.
In both the Administrator and the initial user, all the WinRT apps/tiles work. Like the weather will show up and everything.
Whether I change the Initial User to Standard or Administrator, everything still works fine. Of course, the Administrator can't open WinRT apps which is standard and normal. And the initial user can't use apps without signing into MSA. But it all still works perfectly fine.
The problem is with the new user. The new user is meant to be in Administrator mode because it's my main account. But whether I set it up as Standard or Administrator, it's the same thing. None of my WinRT apps work.
Even when I sign into my MSA with the new user, it's still the same thing. It synchronizes to my OneDrive online. It recognizes that I'm completely signed in online. Yet it's still the exact same thing with the WinRT apps. None of them work. Even when I try to open up the Windows Store. It just continues to try to open, but doesn't go all the way through. So whether I'm signed into my MSA for the third user or not, it still gives the same problem.
I ran Windows Update, and it worked perfectly. Everything is up to date.
Will Norton 360 5.0 Work With Windows 8
Dec 1, 2012Buying a new Laptop and it has WIndows 8 on it just wondering if I need a newer version of Norton 360 for it to work with WIndows 8 I have a 3 User Norton 360 5.0 and only used 2 of the 3 from it. Just don't want to waste time attempting to use it with W8 when it might have issues.
What version of Norton 360 works just in case?

The same gamepad work ok in nexus 7 tablet. Perhaps I need some kind of drivers? In control panel I don't see "gamepad" or something like this, as I see in pc.

When I try to open up my pictures folder, I can not see any previews of photos and I have to go through an entire folder using the Microsoft Picture viewer to view each and every picture then memorize the photo number in order to attach it to any e-mail or to insert it into my Outlook 2007. Is there an incompatibility issue here ? 2007 vs Windows 8.1 ?? What can I do to rectify the situation ?

Setup Installation :: Can't Get AHCI To Work - Windows 8
Feb 3, 2013I just can't seem to get windows 8 to install/use the ahci controller - some specifics:
- new system
- clean windows 8 install (non-pro)
- one new ssd drive and one new hybrid drive, latest firmware flashed
- windows 8 installed on ssd (samsung 120gb)
- bios set to ahci+raid
- bios version current
- installed Windows 8 without pre-installing latest storage drivers during setup, ahci not recognized in device manager
- reinstalled Windows 8 using latest pre-installed drivers during setup, ahci still not recognized in device manager
Spent a lot of time researching this issue and none of the suggestions i've come across seem to work, including registry hacks. regardless of what i do Windows 8 just won't recognize my drives as ahci mode - ahci mode is setup in bios but Windows 8 still loads the ide drivers which can be seen in device manager under ata/atapi controllers. Why won't windows 8 recognize the bios ahci setting?

Apr 13, 2013Scanning device is an HP Photosmart All in One HP 2575. i first installed it as an USB device and Windows Fax and Scan recognized it and scanned nicely. I then installed it as a network device and WFS would not recognize it as a scanning device when I unplugged the USB cable. It prints just fine but will not scan.

Dec 31, 2012I am live on my Windows 8 lappy having connected to this machine using RDC on my Win7 Boot Camp installation. I ended up on the Windows 8 Desktop since the Windows 8 machine was on the Desktop when I connected via RDC. The charm bar doesn't work (or at least I can't get it to work)--which probably doesn't come as a big surprise. I am trying to figure out how to navigate between the Windows 8 Desktop and Metro, including the charms. How to get this basic task done? The main problem is that I have not yet figured out key combinations that will do the job.
By way of explanation, my Windows 8 (older) HP lappy is a bit clunky compared to a MacBook Pro (MBP). I was hoping to use Windows 8 via the MBP because it is a much nicer machine from which to work. I first tried to get the desired navigation going via Mt. Lion/RDC, but had no luck. I thought things might work better if I connected to the Windows 8 machine through my MBP Win 7 Boot Camp installation using RDC, but I still am having no luck with the basic navigation I am trying to accomplish.
PS I am not interested in running Windows 8 virtually on either MBP installation.
PSS Perhaps I need to do more preparation on the Windows 8 lappy, e.g., make a shortcut or a taskbar pin that will take me to Metro, etc.
Windows 8 File Search Doesn't Work?
Oct 19, 2013I was hoping the update from 8 to 8.1 would fix it but no luck.In a nutshell: Windows search for Files stopped working out of nowhere, searching for Apps/Settings works fine, but searching for Files yield no results, not only that, when I enter a file to search for it just sits there without any info on whether it is searching or not (Just says "Files" and nothing more where it usually would also say "Searching...").
I've been troubleshooting this but no one has had this exact problem, here are the solutions I've tried:
- Going to Indexing Options and manually adding the drives I wish to index to "Index these locations" and allowing for a full index. No results, no "Searching" phrase comes up either.
- Using Microsofts Windows Search Troubleshooter which essentially is supposed to fix problems like database corruption and crashes. Part of the fix is it resets the index (so my drives I added aren't in the list anymore), and it says it has Fixed the issues, but upon trying search: I do get the "searching" phrase, but I get very slow (about 25 seconds) and half-assed results (and only when I hit enter or click the magnifying glass icon), it's no longer a list of files in the search pane that starts to list file suggestions in the search pane. It also doesn't find folders.
Finally what I discovered today was in the Windows Features dialog box there is no Windows Search option (which I know should be there, it's on my laptop running Windows 8). I think this may be the key to all of this.
Windows 8 On Netbook - Metro Apps Won't Work?
Aug 3, 2012it installs without a hitch, comes up, runs fine ... just don't try running any Metro apps because most of them won't work - the screen resolution I have is something like 1024 x 600 (fine for this device) but that's too small for most apps. The desktop is fine but virtually nothing else can be run outside that.
I like my little netbook but Windows 8 doesn't. I made an image of that drive becuase I'll be restoring that soon.

then I saw this thing at Microsoft website about windows 8.1 and I thought about upgrading
(which now I deeply regret)
After upgrading I found out that some of the device drivers are not fully supported yet (like the switchable graphics card)
So I thought of rolling back the laptop to factory settings and unfortunately windows 8.1 got that, too.
I did not find install.wim but here is a screenshot where the boot.wim is, I believe it's an important part on this process
Windows 8.1 Desktop Shortcut Icons Don't Work?
Apr 3, 2014I'm installing all my programs on Windows 8.1 and I'm finding that most of my desktop shortcuts will give me an error whenever I try to run them. Every time a program creates a desktop shortcut the icon changes to this default icon. One thing to note is I have changed the default program files destination folder to my HDD D drive and also kept a SSD C drive program files folder. However no matter what drive I select to install it gives me an error "path is not specified".

I installed Windows 7 using the exact same setup and it works immediately.
Oddly, the onboard speakers work in Windows 8.1, but I cannot get any sound through my receiver.
Windows 8 RTM - Metro UI Flashes / Disappears (won't Work)

When I try and use any part of the Metro UI, whether it be the Start screen or the sidebar, everything on the screen disappears when I mouse over something, and I have to Ctrl-Alt-Del into Task Manager to get back to the desktop. Even when I move my mouse along the side, everything on the screen flashes.

Windows 8 Computer Crashes / Won't Work With Updates
Oct 2, 2014So the problem started about a week ago. I came home from work and tried to wake up my computer. It "woke up", but only to a black screen with cursor flashing in the middle. It was clearly on the User login screen as the ease of use button in the lower left corner kept flashing periodically as well. I tried tying in my password and nothing worked.
So I began looking online and I tried some suggestions: Bringing the System Recovery and entering safe mode(same thing happened)....tried entering safe mode + cmd prompt (same problems).
I then used the System Recovery, cmd prompt, and robocopy to transfer all the files I needed to an external...so those are all safe and sound.
I tried doing a system restore point, but that didn't work either. So fed up, I decided to do a clean install. I inserted the disc, deleted the partitions and everything on the hard drive, and just did a fresh install of Windows 8.
I FINALLY got to my desktop. So to get back to 8.1 I had to do all the appropriate updates...which is where I ran into problem #2 that plagues me till now. After the updates were installed it, of course, asks me to restart...when I do.. I get the windows logo with the swirling dots and then BSOD.
The error on it is "SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION (nvlddmkm.sys)". I read that thats because of video card drivers....so I go back to a system restore point I set up, and try updating without the gpu drivers.
I get the BSOD again and same error, though this time without the "(nvlddmkm.sys)".
I went back, tried updating BIOS, tried updating things one at a time, tried using 3 month old gpu drivers...but it all ends up the same...BSOD.
SO I'm stuck at the base Windows 8 with no way to update....what can I do?

Why Windows 8 Video Smoothing Didn't Work
May 8, 2013I Stream a video on Windows Media Server at (5 Frame per second), and play it using an application on Windows 7 and Enable Frame Interpolation, it was played in 25 FPS
But when I do that on Windows 8, it still play in 5 FPS, and Frame Interpolation didn't work.
When I play the video stream in Windows Media Player 11 on windows 7 and enable Video Smoothing, it works and played on 25 FPS, but in Windows Media Player 12 in Windows 8 it didn't work also.
The Codec used in the video is (Windows Media Video 9)
