View 2 RepliesI have Win 8.1 running in my PC; I don't know how and when, but the default location of screenshots (as taken by pressing Win key and PrntScr together) has changed to a random folder somewhere in drive E. I know that location, and if this is possible, how can I change that default location to wherever I want?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have to copy several pages from a pdf document for a job I'm doing. How to take screen shots in adobe but when I copy each single page in to word, it is tiny. I can enlarge them in word but when I do, the writing on them is no longer legible. I also get the black background to the page which I seemingly have to cut out using a snipping too. The snipping tool problem is annoying but the other issue may prevent me from being able to do the work for the client so it's a bigger problem.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've decided to go ahead and reinstall w8pro given my extensive messing around with it has finally caused some quirky, unexpected results - it's a relatively new installation, so it shouldn't be too much of a hassle, didn't get a chance to install a lot of third party programs and such. The thing is, I did purchase and install the Windows 8 media center pack - how do i go about getting this back? do i have to contact ms? I'm fairly certain that i don't have an activation number for the pack, if i recall i just paid for it online and then was allowed to download it and install it.
Also, i thought i would go ahead and do a clean install all over again as opposed to a reset or refresh given i want to make certain that i'm starting from scratch again... or do you think a reset or refresh might be the better option (i'm not concerned about keeping any personal settings or files intact).
I am running Windows 8.1 and have been experiencing an issue as of late, without any hardware or software changes. About every 4 hours, the OS will lock up, start stuttering any audio, and then the screen goes black and it reboots. This has happened while playing a game, watching Netflix, just browsing the web, seems about anything (oncej ust launching Google Chrome).
I have checked the event logs and don't see anything (only thing is the Critical under system and it says your system did not shut down properly, no errors before it).
Wife's computer upon reboot went into System Repair mode and said it might take more than an hour to complete. Now its hanging endless on a black screen. WIN 8 only 3 month only Sony VAIO machine.
If the laptop is powered off and is completely shut down and restarted...it is only going to a black screen. Nothing else?
I have a hp envy running Windows 8.1. I recently ran a system restore, and ever since it has run the hp logo, then gone to a black screen and stayed there. Things I've tried:
Boot in safe mode: No change. Startup Repair: Said it couldn't fix it, but I can't get to the log file to find out why (is there a way to access windows explorer from then startup repair menu? Maybe using the command prompt?) System repair:Said there wasn't enough hard drive space. Another system restore: Didn't work, blamed my antivirus. (McAfee) Full system reset: Said there was a drive partition missing.
What I could try to resolve any of these? I have access to everything in the startup repair menu(f11), as well as the BIOS, but I'm not really sure where to go from there.
I have gone into the control panel and tried changing the screen brightness but nothing seems to work. I am the system administer so I should be able to set all changes.

My friend has a new asus laptop and while he was updating his new GeForce driver the laptop just blacked out. The screen was on, but only showing black pixels. We tried a monitor but that did the same thing and the problem did not solve itself after hard resetting the system.
Oh yeah and one more thing: When he pushes the on/off button its supposed to go sleep mode but it just completely shuts down in an instant.
Oh and we discovered one more thing: The light indicators for wifi and capslock etc. still work. Capslock only shuts itself off after turning on, strainge..
Is there a way to have the settings on the system tray instead of on the right side of the screen and have it visible instead of having to go after it all the time?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell laptop Inspiron 15R 7537 that came with Windows 8. Yesterday I upgraded to Windows 8.1. Everything seemed to work fine after the upgrade. I shut down and re-booted several times with no issues. When I turned the computer on as usual today, I got the log in screen, then it briefly went to the desktop, then came a gray screen that blocks 99% of the desk top. This gray screen says "please wait" and has a cancel button at the bottom. It hangs forever and the cancel button doesn't work. It gives no other information.
I read several threads on the Microsoft Windows forum and this seems to be a common problem. How to boot using the Windows 8 recovery media disk that came with the Dell computer. I selected Troubleshoot, then Advanced Options, then Automatic Repair. I got a message that it couldn't do an automatic repair, so that didn't work. Next I tried System Restore, but I got a message that there were no restore points available from which to restore. Just to clarify - the Recovery Media Disk I have from Dell is for Windows 8 - not 8.1 - so maybe that's the problem.
The computer is totally worthless the way it is now, so unless there is some fix for the hanging gray screen in Windows 8.1, I would be happy just to reload the original Windows 8 Operating System. At least that worked.
use Chrome as my main browser and I've recently downloaded Firefox. But sometime today i have realized that I do not have IE11 (I have Windows 8.1) installed. Perhaps I uninstalled it or something has happened. I want to know how to install back another IE11. I have check microsoft's Website:
I then was looking through my Program Files I found that my IE folder was still there. There was something called iexplore.exe (as seen in my screenshot) [URL].... and I want to know if that app will install my IE back? Even thoug it is not critical, I would still like to know how to get it back.
My friend just brought a HP laptop which has windows 8 pre installed but the problem is no key is mentioned on the back of laptop. So I was wondering if she ever has to reinstall the operating system how will she do it she does not even have the key so do we legally own the OS or not.

Me and my girlfriend both have recently bought new laptops that came with Windows 8 installed (HP Pavilion) but wiped the drive and installed Ubuntu straight away without booting Windows 8.
Now that 8.1 is out we want to give it a chance. I see I can download 8.1 preview from Microsoft but it comes with a product key, so I'm guessing that it will expire once 8.1 is officially released, but both laptops had Windows 8 preinstalled so they should have an embedded product key, correct?
Is is possible to install 8.1 preview and get it to use the embedded product keys, or do I have to buy a HP recovery disc and use that to install Windows 8 on both laptops, then update both to 8.1 through the store?
Also, if I was to buy a Windows 8 DVD in store (only about 20 more than a HP recovery disc), could I use that to install Windows 8 on both laptops (using the embedded product keys), and then use the product key that came with it to upgrade a family member to Windows 8?
I don't know a lot about windows 8. I have a general enquiry to make. I would like to know that if I reinstall my windows 8 will I have to reinstall the programs of different drive. For example like I have my main OS in C: and many of my programs like steam and some other games are installed in D: so when I format my pc will I have to reinstall the programs present in D: or will there be any kind of error or something.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have recently done a fresh install of Windows 8.1 on a family member's laptop due to the amount of bloat ware etc.
Everything has gone swimmingly and all the correct drivers etc are installed/up to date.
There's one big problem though. Whenever I change the power plan it just remains the same. I.e if I have the power setting to 'High Performance' and I change it to 'Power Saving' nothing happens. The brightness doesn't even decrease.
The laptop is a Lenovo Ideapad Z580.
I have a valid activated 8.1 Pro + W M C system and need to do several re-installs on the same partition and hardware to test some unattended scripts for customization, etc.
When I re install, there is no network connectivity until I install the proper drivers. I am currently replacing the install data. that and token data with the activated versions from my original install, after which I run slmgr. -i p k with the original key without any errors, but the system shows not activated. I don't remember this being the case with Win 8 doing the same thing.
Apparently, just restoring the activated tokens and installing the same product key isn't enough to get back the previous activation status when offline. I can reactivate going online and that stays activated even after going back offline, but not after a re-install. I always have to reactivate online. How to avoid this?
I'm thinking of buying a new Dell desktop but not interested in Windows 8. With my current Dell desktop I have the Windows 7 OEM disk for reinstallation. Could I use that disk to install Windows 7 on a new Dell PC (or maybe even just a partition of it) or will it refuse to install because it's a different machine?
