Slow To Shut Down - Taking 4 To 5 Minutes

Aug 7, 2014

Whenever I shut down or reboot my PC, it gets to the blue screen that says "Shutting down..." and where it sits for 4-5 mins. How could I start troubleshooting this? It runs pretty fast otherwise.

Maintenance :: Windows 8.1 Computer Takes 4 Minutes To Shut Down

Jan 3, 2014

I have a Dell XPS 8700 Desktop, has 8GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive, running Windows 8.1 which I had installed the day it came out..the PC I purchased in September 2013..for the past few weeks I have noticed how when I shut down the pc that it can take up to 4 minutes to shut down, the monitor will go black but the power button the tower will remain white til it turns off, it used to turn off in a matter of seconds, now its minutes..same issue for restart, takes about 3 minutes to restart and no one from Dell can figure out what the problem is..all I had installed in December were updates from microsoft thats it, other than that nothing new has been installed. Yesterday I got a notification from Dell on my PC notifying me that I should update my BIOS which was A4 to A6 which I did and still the same issue..talked to five technicians and no one can figure it out, been told maybe its software related and I need to reformat the hard drive, I feel that would be a waste of time, if there was an actual cause I would do it, but to format my hard drive with no known cause of this problem would be stupid, it would just happen again.

Maintenance :: Windows 8 / 8.1 Extremely Slow To Boot - Take 10-15 Minutes

Oct 26, 2013

I've had certain problem with my Windows 8 installation . Let me summarize the entire scenario but before that below are my System Details .

System :- Dell Inspiron 17R SE 7720 Laptop .
O/S :- Windows 8.1 .

I formatted my system yesterday and installed Windows 8.1 via MSDN ISO . Installed Dell Drivers and a few programs like Norton 360 etc , after which i shutdown my system yesterday .

When i opened my system today , i was shocked to see Preparing automatic repair message on the Dell boot screen . It tried Automatic repair because it said that Windows was unable to boot properly . However , Automatic repair was unable to do anything .

After that i shutdown my system again and then again powered it on. This time it booted to Windows but took about 5 min to get to the password screen . After booting to Desktop mode , i tried to open chrome , task manager etc , but nothing opened , and the system was painfully slow up until 10 min . After which everything was normal .

Tried to open Event log and it also crashed. I again restarted my system and this time it was lightening fast . Tried to shutdown and restart 2-3 times more , and it was fast all these times .

I've attached a dump of all my logs using SF Diagnostic tool ....

Maintenance :: Hang On Restart / Shut Down Slow Boot Times?

Oct 31, 2012

I'm getting soo many problems regarding booting after upgrading to Windows 8 Pro yesterday on my Asus Zenbook UX32A.

Specs:

2nd Gen i3-2367M processor @ 1.4GHz (for Ultrabooks)

6GB DDR3 RAM

500GB HDD + 30GB SSD (for Fast Resume, etc.)

Issue # 1: Whenever I Restart or Shut Down, the system HANGS there and does not progress *most* of the time. To fix this I have to always resort to holding the power button.

Issue # 2: When I boot the PC up, it takes SO long for me to get to the Start menu, around 1:15-1:30 min, which is longer than it took me on W7. I know I have an HDD, but this is abnormally long to me. Once in a blue moon, I will boot up in a matter of 30-40 seconds (which I think is how long it should take), but mostly it takes really long.

Issue # 3: To test the above 2 issues, I went ahead and opened msconfig from Run, and disabled all Non-Microsoft services except AVG to check. When I shutdown and power on - everything is fine, shuts down nicely, powers on nicely - however, the second time I do this, the system will hang on shut down, or will hang on start up, sometimes I can hear the startup sound but nothing on the screen, all sorts of weird actions.

Issue # 4: This one is funny. On standby (lid down), the system will restart itself. Happened while I was sleeping, I could hear the boot sound.

EDIT: The problem is still there when I disable 'Fast Start-Up' in Power Options. The problem is due to the processor state, it keeps resetting to 100%.

Windows 8 Very Slow To Access Files - Green Ribbon Of Slow Death

Dec 16, 2012

I have just built a new computer and Installed Win8. The motherboard, processor, and system drive are all brand new Intel stuff; the media drive is a new Seagate. Programs get up and running just fine, but I have transferred my files over from my old xp machine, and Win Explorer is very slow to access them.

I'll open a folder, and more often than not the thumbs will not be there; I'll then try to open or preview a file and I'll get the green progress bar over the address bar. This will often take up to a minute or more to run, and if I leave it be then the icons will usually appear and the files will then be accessible. If I try to open or preview a file before it's done things lock up on me.

After navigating away from that folder and allowing some time to pass however, the thumbs dissapear again and I am back to square one. sometimes the thumbs will reappear all on their own. this seems to be an issue whether we're talking large files or small, or folders with 100's of files or as few as 8. The very same files are instantly accessible by the new comp from the original locations on my external USB drive and on my xp machine over the network. Once they are copied to the new machine is when things get bogged down. This seems to be the case both on the system drive and the media drive.

Furthermore, right from the very beginning, I've had icons disappearing and reappearing from my start menu apps page.

I have tried the following to resolve the problem:

- I have optimized the folders in question for both the types of media therein, and back to "General Items" again

- I have disabled indexing both on the drives themselves and in the libraries control panel

- I have run a full system virus scan with Bit Defender

- I have contacted Windows support and they have run a scan that showed Windows itself to be working properly

One thing that occures to me is the problem seems to be with the SATA drives and the SATA drives only, but if there's something wrong with the mother board wouldn't my programs have trouble opening too?

Alt-F4 Is Taking To Second Screen Instead Of Closing?

Jan 19, 2013

I am really used to using Alt-F4 to close the current application. I just bought a Toshiba C855 (windows 8, of course), and when I press Alt-F4 to close IE10 (the one I launch from the desktop, not the "app", although I'm not sure yet what the difference is), I get the "second screen" thing coming in from the right. It tells about choosing what happens to a second monitor connected to your system. I also get this screen when I press F4, so it seems like the whole F4 thing has been re-directed.

Every guide and manual I've seen so far says that Alt-F4 works to close an application, so why isn't this working that way?

It's annoying because I can't click a link that opens up a new tab but instead of going to the link it goes to this "Internet Search".... I tried removing it from my Add-Ons but that didn't seem to work either.

Videos Taking Forever To Start

Aug 24, 2014

So recently (around a week ago), my computer started taking forever to load YouTube videos. The videos buffer "sometimes fully" and still don't play. This also happens with Webms on any website.

If it's related, I also updated my (IDT) audio drivers around the same time this started happening.

This only happens some of the time (with no relation to the length of the video).

I just discovered this only happens when I'm using Skype (or any other voice chat).

This is still happening even when not using Skype. It's getting really annoying. Also, if a video doesn't play and I load up a bunch of videos at the same time, they don't play either. But then a few seconds/minutes later, they all randomly start playing at the same time. It's really weird.

I have done a bunch of tests (by loading up a bunch of videos) and apparently this is caused by Shockwave Flash. ALL of my audio stops working randomly, and on Google Chrome, when I got a prompt to stop Shockwave Flash (because it was not responding), I clicked "stop," and as soon as I did so all my audio resumed working and the videos started. This is really odd.

Apparently it's not Flash because Spotify is doing basically the same thing with my browser closed.

Apparently I'm also going to make edits all day. I'll keep updating everything I find out. So right now what I forgot to mention is that whenever I click the volume changing little button, it's supposed to make a sound immediately right? For me, voice mixer stops responding for 10-20 seconds, then 10 seconds later it plays a sound. Should I reinstall/remove my audio drivers or what? I

I now remember that the old audio drivers I had were RealTek High Definition Audio drivers. I updated them to IDT through the HP website with this exact model. I know I got the right drivers for this model, but this is horrible, all the bugs and general-unworkability of this.

DUDownload Folder Taking Up C Space?

Sep 15, 2014

I noticed yesterday when I tried to install Adobe Creative Suite that my new SSD C: drive was only showing around 50GB of free space left, when I know that there should be around 130GB left.

I installed TreeSize. Here's a screen shot.

There's 96.3GB in a "DUDownload" folder which is inside a hidden folder. The largest file is 94.6GB(!!!) "Reserved.DynamicUpdate"

I'm thinking it could be the update to Windows 8.1 (which I've postponed a couple of times) but nearly 100GB for an update seems a bit much...

I'm running Windows 8, clean installed about 2 weeks ago onto a brand new SSD. I want my space back!

Windows 8 Taking Up Too Much Drive Space

Jul 8, 2012

I've been using Windows 8 CP for about 3 months now, and I'm a bit shocked that my 100Gb partition is almost full. Take note that I have a separate partition for multimedia files other than for OS. I'm also running Win7 on a separate drive and so far it has only taken up around 40+Gb in a span of a little over a year. So I wonder, does Windows 8 really take up that much space really fast? is it normal? I've already done cleaning up the disk, deleted unused update files, deleted as much trash files I could find.. But still, all I could free is <10gb of space.

Is there any other way I could free more space? Is there something wrong with my Windows 8? Or is it really normal that it takes up space that fast?

I found a partition tool which allows you to allot free space from one partition to another, but I'm not yet sure whether to use it or not. I guess I just need to hear other people's opinion first.

4) Terminate explorer.exe

Maintenance :: Windows 8 Taking Few Hours To Boot?

Sep 19, 2013

So a a day ago I woke up, turned on my computer, and was surprised at how long it took to turn on. It took, like, 30 minutes to get to the desktop screen (I have Pokki so it goes to metro for a seconds and then automatically goes to the desktop).

It took its sweet time trying to load steam and I ended up cancelling the load. Nothing loaded except for Launchy, not even the Pokki start button. I was surprised so I turned it on again and it kept going slower each time; I shouldn't have kept restarting, but I was stupid.

Anyways, I left the house and when I got home I restarted it twice before I decided to just let everything load. I was able to close the Steam startup, something I'd been trying to do for some time, but the computer had booted so slowly and the computer had lagged so badly I'd not been able to. I couldn't even open the task manager because when I moved the mouse down to make the taskbar popup it would lag. When I right-clicked it would take a minute or two to open the box and when I clicked on "task manager" it wouldn't open because the program would time out. There would be a Microsoft error pop-up box when it timed out. When I would get it to open it would take a long ass time to load and it crashed a few times.

Anyways, I decided to just let it load, it took 2-3.5 hours to open everything. I opened Advanced System Care Ultimate and ran a virus check and then I went to sleep, when I woke up it said that the check (a full scan) had run for 8 hours and there were no problems according to the program.

Things were still kinda laggy, but the speed of the computer was the same it had been when it as first laggy. So, unusable laggy, but not as bad as it had gotten. Also, it said that Windows 8 hadn't been activated and when I tried to activate it Windows said it couldn't activate it at the time.

The message left (after being there the whole night), but things were still laggy (oh and this is not the first time I have installed Windows 8 so during the night I also left it to delete the old windows.old folders, it would say that it kept finding new items. So, even the deletion of things was sloowwww). I turned on Skype and even though the internet was connected it didn't connect. I turned on the troubleshooter, but it would time-out. I opened Google Chrome and it actually opened! When that happened Skype started to work and, even though things were still laggy, I thought things were getting better. I saw a video.

I left the house, but I left everything on as Advanced System Care Ultimate checked for malware (after having run the antivirus check the previous night). When I got home the internet didn't work, but the computer was almost as fast as it was before (its got 4 years, and it recently fell, but there hadn't been any problems until that day. ACTUALLY, I don't know if this started before or after it fell, it wasn't from a high place, but the loading screen had been lagging for some time).

I ran the troubleshooter and it worked this time, it said that the Diagnostics Policy wasn't working. So, the internet stopped working in the 8-9 hours I was gone. Pokki still hadn't loaded, I went to PC settings and I tried to change the Lock Screen for no reason and it didn't work. I tried changing the account picture and that didn't work either. I'm at a loss, not sure whats happening to my computer, but its almost as fast as it once was.

Maintenance :: Windows 8 Is Taking Up A Lot Of Hard Drive

Maintenance :: Small Programs Taking Up Large Amounts Of HDD Space

Jan 28, 2013

Recently I've encountered a problem whilst trying to clean up my HDD (it was filling up way too quickly and I wanted to get rid of some unwanted games/programs), and I noticed a problem with file sizes of even small programs.

For a start, I am a massive FSX simmer, so that's why there's so many FSX addons in my screenshots.

Anyway, I use "iOBit System Care 6 Ultimate" to clean up my laptop, and I was trying to use the inbuilt uninstaller to get rid of some programs. This is what happened:

Now, I know that all those programs DO NOT take up that much HDD space, considering the hard drive in this laptop is currently only 500GB. I can almost guarantee those programs DO NOT take up those huge amounts because 1: They are reasonably small addons and 2: Because on my old laptop, they never took up that much space.

So I also tried Revo Uninstaller, and this was the result:

Now, notice the top result? The "Carenado Cessna Skylane HD Series FSX"? Well, that's DEFINITELY not 50GB, that's 100% wrong in all fronts. I took a screenshot to prove so:

Yeah, that's TOTALLY 50GB right there

So, last but not least, here's my HDD space/free space:

Note that only the "Windows C: and Recovery Drive F:" are part of the HDD, the other partitions are part of my external 1TB HDD.

Weirdest part is that, the files DON'T take up that much space when I right click - properties in Windows Explorer. Now, I'm not sure what's the go but it's definitely odd. I can't get legitimate sizes from neither Revo or iOBit, and it's really annoying.

Also, programs like "Alan Wake" and "Adobe Master Collection Creative Suite 6" show up as the normal file size, yet ANY Flight Simulator X addon shows up as a huge amount?

I have gone to start up in task manager and disabled everything. This does nothing. I have changed from a live to a local account. Nothing. I have not installed anything recently other then video drivers. Internet seems to work fine while logged in.

Have all the most recent mobo drivers.......

Anything else in my hardware does not really seem relevant.....

I am attempting o OC my cpu and gpu and have to reboot a lot to dial it in.

Here are some other things I have done.

-Updated router firm ware: no change
-Tried static ip: nodda
-Disabled all virus software: nothing.
