Setup Installation :: Upgrade Win 7 Home Premium To Win 8 Pro - Acer Laptop

Sep 8, 2013

I have an Acer aspire S3 Ultrabook Laptop (one of several laptops) and I am wanting to upgrade the os to win 8 pro. I have the win 8 pro pack, which is a full version i think,it does not say it is an "upgrade". Am i still able to use this win 8 pro pack to upgrade?( i thought upgrade packs are in fact cheaper)

There is the windows upgrade anytime link which i used just now,but it said that the windows key is invalid. It is a brand new pack with a new key.

I have read instructions online that say i need to insert the disk. But i am wondering if all the acer software will be deleted on C drive, although the instructions say it will be kept intact,as it has the acer recovery software in control panel on it. If the acer software is deleted how will i reinstall those? I am guessing that the win 8 pro disk will have all the right drivers?

Setup Installation :: Upgrade To Windows 8 Pro 64bit From Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

May 6, 2013

I wish to upgrade my pc from Windows 7 Home Premium 64 to Windows 8 Professional 64.

I have purchased and received the Windows 8 Professional (Upgrade Edition) 32/64 DVDs.

Do I need to disable Norton Internet Security (NIS) 2013, before I proceed with the upgrade (Keeping all apps, settings, and files) ?

Would I need to reinstall NIS 2013 after upgrade is completed ?

How long (on average) am I looking for the upgrade to fully complete from start to finish ?

And finally, does everything transfer successfully (as I'll be using the 'Keep all apps, settings, and files' option) ?

Setup Installation :: Acer Aspire V5 - No Operating System Found After Windows 8.1 Upgrade

Aug 11, 2014

Acer Aspire V5 laptop that was running an OEM Windows 8 to upgrade to 8.1.

After selecting the Upgrade to Windows 8.1 via the store, the system went through it's install procedure, however after it does an auto reboot, it gives you a blank screen with the message No Operating System found, in the upper left corner.

But, you can turn the machine off and back on, and it will boot just fine. However if you select restart it does the same thing "no operating system found", on restart and again you must power down and power back on.

I have searched for fixes, but all seem to point to some sort of re-install process. I am not to crazy about the idea of re-installing to factory settings or doing a repair back to Windows 8 and attempting to upgrade again, are their any known shorter fixes for this?

And if I do go back to Windows 8, and try to upgrade again, what is to say it won't happen again?

Setup Installation :: Performing Clean Install Upgrade On Windows 8 Dell Laptop

Sep 15, 2014

I have a Dell Inspiron 15R SE 7520 laptop that came with Windows 8 Core edition pre-installed. This laptop has never worked properly for some reason. It won't shutdown the normal way (it'll just stay on the shutdown screen forever) and it never comes back from sleep without a BSOD along with other troubles that haven't been solved by updating drivers, etc.

I decided I want to do a clean Windows 8.1 re-install and upgrade on my laptop to get rid of these problems, but it's been ages since I last did this (back in Win2K times, I used to dual boot Slackware Linux) and I've bee reading about all this UEFI, Secure Boot, etc and quite frankly it's making me quite nervous. I was even planning on taking this chance to dual boot some linux distro, but it looks sooo difficult. Things are much more complicated these days for the tinkerer!

I need to make sure I can get back to a running system quickly.

For starters, here is how the hard drive is partitioned: [URL] ....
And this is the Diskpart output : [URL] ....

Why do I have 5 partitions? I understand the recovery partition, the OS partition and (after lots of reading) the ESP partition, but I'm not sure about the others. What do I need to keep? I've been reading around and I see some people recommend wiping the whole drive and starting from scratch. Is this a good ide?

I'll create the installation media from a windows 8.1 MSDN ISO using a USB drive. When I start the installation process it will ask me where I want to reinstall it to. Do I just choose the OS partition? Won't the recovery partition be based on a Windows 8 image and be useless from now on?

What's the best way I can get back to a fully working system in case I screw up somehow? I've made an image of my drive using Macrium Reflect free edition. But I read here that I cannot make an image of a GPT disk. Will this image I made work for getting back to a working system quickly in case I screw up?

As a last resort, I've made a Recovery USB using the Dell Backup and Recovery Method. In the extreme case that I screw up real bad, will this work to get back a factory-state system even if I've wiped my hard drive clean? I'm assuming this tool is for users recovering after a dead hard drive so it should work , right?

Setup Installation :: Windows 8 To 8.1 Upgrade Failed - Must Upgrade System BIOS

Jul 3, 2014

Yesterday, I clean-installed Windows 8 Pro x86 on an old Dell Vostro 1400 laptop which had been running Windows 7 Ultimate, and it activated and ran fine, without even a single exclamation point in Device Manager. I applied the update necessary to make the Store offer 8.1 and proceeded to install it as I've done on a couple other machines. After downloading the thing, it errored out with:

Couldn't install Windows 8.1

Contact your PC manufacturer to see if you can upgrade the System BIOS

When I clicked the OK button, it then gave me the informative and grammar-challenged error box:

Something happened and the Windows 8.1 couldn't be installed. Please try again. Error code: 0xc1900104

Try again Cancel

Ever the optimist, I clicked Try again, and of course, it proceeded to download all over again from scratch, only to error out in the same way. I then downloaded all the Windows 8 updates, although just the one had been necessary on my other machines that successfully upgraded to 8.1, and tried again, only to get the same result.

Today, I've discovered the Windows 8.1 Compatibility Assistant, which avoids the lengthy download of the upgrade every time (Microsoft, maybe you should run it implicitly before downloading 3 GB of transient data), and it tells me:

This PC doesn't meet system requirements

Contact your PC manufacturer to see if you can upgrade the System BIOS

Obviously, no BIOS updates are available, and what exactly is the problem here with my BIOS. The obvious googling turned up nothing except some people with Sony Vaios that had the same problem, which was corrected with a BIOS update, and of course, there is no information on what their BIOS update does to make the 8.1 upgrade possible.

Setup Installation :: Can't Get DVD ISO To Work With Both Home And Professional

Feb 12, 2014

I thought I would look at creating/using my own media.

I have been using VMs for testing these, so much better than playing with someone's PC

I have ISOs for both 8.0 and 8.1 which I downloaded using Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 ISO - Download or Create. The licence key I used for the download was my legitimate one that I purchased from Microsoft (so it wasn't OEM), it is actually an upgrade key from Windows 7 for Win 8 Pro. I can install these ISOs no problem but they always install the Pro version and I never get an option for installing Home.

I tried putting a ei.cfg file in the sources directory containing
[EditionID]
[Channel]
Retail
[VL]
0

But this just allows me to install without the key. I tried putting both "Core" and "Home" in as an EditionID but the install process fails saying "The product key entered does no match any of the Windows images available for installation. Enter a different product key"

If I try using the downloaded iso without the ei.cfg file but instead use the generic key for Home I get the same message.

So I'm pretty sure the downloads I got from MS just contain Pro. Is this right or is there a special way of making Home available? Based upon what I have seen in the forums I would also probably need "Home Single Language" to be available as well (if possible).

In case it makes any difference the ISOs I have always set their language to English (United Kingdom) during the install.

Setup Installation :: Acer Aspire M7710 - No OS After Windows 8 Reset

I have an Acer Aspire M7710 which I installed Windows 8 on.

I wanted to use the reset windows option under the advanced settings option. After selecting the reset option it said it would reboot. This was about 5 hours ago and all I have had is a black screen.

Eventually I powered off my computer after 4 hours waiting as something seemed wrong. When I powered my PC back on I get nothing, just a black screen again.

I thought I would just boot from the Windows 8 dvd and reinstall but for some reason I can't boot from dvd anymore.

I googled around looking for option how I could enter my bios or change the boot order for cd/dvd but I can't get any keyboard shortcuts to let me boot from dvd or enter the bios.

How I can boot from dvd and reinstall?

Setup Installation :: New MSata Install From Acer Recovery USB - In Bios No Boot

Jan 14, 2014

These are the steps I've taken-- OS Win 8, pre-installed by Acer.

1) Make recovery USB using the Acer recovery wizard, with the laptop in stock configuration.

2) Install msata as secondary drive

3) Go to Computer management and initialize the msata and format with GPT style. Format the drive, assign a drive letter. (I only see 1 partition). I did this as NTFS/default allocation size. Is this where I went wrong?

4) Remove the factory HDD (listed as HDD0 in BIOS)

5) Boot to BIOS
5a) in BIOS, disable secure boot.
5b) Go to legacy mode
5c) Set msata (HDD1 in BIOS) as #1 in boot order

6) boot to USB recovery drive, follow steps to restore from USB (clean install, make partitions as it wants)

7) remove USB, reboot.

Error message-- no bootable device. I can basically load the USB again or the BIOS.

So how to do it and get it done. I love windows 7 Pro but I can't figure out how to do it.

I have already turned off secure boot in bios. However, UEFI mode is still active vs legacy bios which is the other mode I have.

Setup Installation :: Win 8.1 (upgrade) Migration To SSD

Jun 10, 2014

I am currently using asus a42ja as my main laptop, and installed EOM version of windows 7 on it. Then i got an upgrade (from Microsoft store) to windows 8, a couple of months ago I upgraded to windows 8.1. Long story short, i got an SSD , and i wanted to clean install windows 8.1 on it.

1. the windows update advisor for windows 8.1 wont receive the product key that i currently have (win 8 upgrade) does that mean i cant do clean installation?? or should i install win 8 and do upgrade manually (which is a pain)??

2. lets say i will do clean intall win 8 on the ssd, will my upgrade key works? will i encounter a problem with the activation process?

3. other option is to reset my win 8.1 and clone the fresh copy to the ssd , but i never done this before , only refresh, and if im resetting my computer, do i need to re activate the windows? (and will my product key works?)

4. the last and least preferred option : do windows refresh and clone the system drive to ssd.

is there some utility to backup the windows activation?all i wanted to do is do a clean install of windows 8.1 (and activate it) on the new drive.

Setup Installation :: How To Upgrade From Windows 8.1 SL To Pro

Aug 22, 2014

I just got a new laptop, running Windows 8.1 SL. I wanted to connect it to the office Active Directory domain, just to find that it can't. Now I know I can go to Control Panel, to the "Add features to Windows 8.1", and purchase an 8.1 Pro key. But my company has a Windows 8.1 volume license key, and there are still a few available that I can use.

However, I already have everything set up pretty much the way I want it; I don't want to format and re-install Windows. I tried to do the Windows "Add features to Windows 8.1" ("Windows Anytime Upgrade" as it was called in Windows 7) using our Volume License key, but it doesn't want to accept the key.

So I was wondering if there is any way to do this upgrade without losing any data? For example, is there something I can do with slmgr? Or can I maybe just insert the 8.1 Pro disc and do an upgrade?
