In my Win 8.1 system, I disabled UAC and I'm an Admin. Still, I'm prompted to confirm certain actions, such as writes to Program File (x86). Sometimes, it seems that the prompt appears when I want to copy a file from a network share to a protected location. Is there a way to prevent this? How about a way to permanently elevate my account to System?

How come the UAC is set to the lowest setting for the admin, but for a standard user it is still set as default (requiring admin password)?

I was transferring files from one external drive to another, I found a problem with a set of folders that I could not transfer with permission which should have been fine as I have administrator rights.
Looking at the folder permissions I found an unknown user account
Looking for solutions I tried to delete this account but was not allowed unless I turned off inherited permissions
I tried turning off the inheritance but this resulted in an error saying it failed to enumerate the number of objects in the container access denied.
Looking at some individual files (in one of the offending folders) properties showed 'Unable to display current owner' selecting the 'Change' option allowed me to change the file ownership to Everyone - Full Control and I could then move or delete the file.
There are quite a lot of files to do so is there a way to change all the affected folder & file permissions in one move?
I have a user with a machine that was setup with Win 8.1 Home. The machine has been upgraded to 8.1 Pro and joined to a domain (WinSrv 2003). I need to get the content/configuration from their old local machine user profile to their new domain user profile.
I tried to copy the contents of their ../users/<name>/.. folder from the local user profile to the new domain user profile (after they had logged in once, and then logged off). This did not work. When I did the copy, I grabbed all files, including hidden...was that my mistake, or is the issue broader?
In the end....they want their old stuff and configuration under their new credentials/profile.
I bought a shiny new laptop yesterday with windows 8 pre-installed. After setting a few things up, i restarted the computer for the first time. At this time the computer downloaded many updates. On start up since my user account has been downgraded to a guest account. This is the only account on the computer, as such i do not have administrator rights and i am unable to log in as an administrator.
May I have to restore the computer back to factory settings but how to do this without being the administrator.
Is there any way to "tell" Windows (8.1) which programs are OK to run and modify the system? I get tired of saying OK every time I run one of many utilities like True Image 2013, Auslogics, CoreTemp, CPUz and the list goes on and on. I have UAC set to the lowest level short of Off. I really don't want to turn UAC Off since I keep thinking it might actually catch a bad guy sometime! I have my W7 systems UAC set the same way as Windows 8 but don't get all the annoying popups!
I was wrong - W7 UAC acts the same way as Windows 8. I had it Turned Off in W7 and turned it on to the lowest level to check but the change does not take effect until the system is rebooted. So...I'll run Windows 8 with UAC Off too unless there is a better way.
I had to uninstall McAfee control over Windows 8.1 firewall, because the Apple Mobile Device Support program kept rolling back !!

The server name is "goodbuddy" on "TRUCKERSREPORT" domain and it seems to be running some kind of setup right at login every time. I don't want to allow this user admin rights for program changes, but i need to make it so an administrator doesn't have to enter their credentials in this every time this user logs into their computer.

I am not sure whether i encrypted the drives after installing windows 8 or in windows 7, nevertheless i do know the encryption passwords to the drives. The biggest problem is therefore trying to remove/disable the encryption to upgrade.
The Applet in the control panel is missing for some reason. I have seen some guides which rely on this applet which is usually situated between auto play and colour management.
I would like to remove/disable the encryption for the upgrade, or confirm the idea that if i disconnect the two drives that are encrypted i could upgrade the OS to 8.1 and wouldn't need to worry about the encryption. The concern is that the 8.1 OS would not read the drives hence the upgrading message.
My specs are this , related to Bitlocker:

I recently deleted a user account, and clicked yes to also delete all associated files...the user was successfully deleted, however, the user's folders/files remain, and cannot be deleted. Is it possible to associate that user's folder with a new user's login? If not, what needs to be done in order to delete the remaining user folder?

Win 8.1. I created a new user account with administrator privileges as usual, but the new account does not show when I log off or try change accounts. It also isn't listed on the upper right corner of the start page.
Basically even though I see it in other accounts through the settings menu, I can't switch to it.If I go to disk C/users it's not listed. I turned on Guest Account and also I can't choose it.
Bought a new laptop for my daughter with win 8 and got it set up. Being the newbie I am, every time my daughter starts her laptop my name appears on the user account. She wants thi changed. Problem: I can't change my User Account picture. Whenever I click on the "Browse" button, nothing happens. Same goes for whenever I try to change the Lock Screen.
I read somewhere CCleaner removes some essential shortcuts which can prevent that, but I don't see that being the case coz I restored all the icons and even ran "sfc /scannow" just to be sure of that.
Apparently there is little or no security for app tiles (on right-side of the screen. Guests can run any app that was installed in the Public folder as well as many of the administrative type apps. I can go in one-by-one and deny Guest access, but I must have over 100 apps they can access and run. They can even uninstall programs.
It would nice if Windows 8 had set all tiles to deny guest permissions for all of the app tiles and let us turn the few apps we give guest "on."
Any way or a program that you could deny guests access to these app tiles in bulk?
I'm only running Windows Defender plus Windows Firewall Control on my Win 8 Pro x64. Are these enough for my security? Anyny security setup that won't slow down my system?
View 3 Replies View RelatedSo when I was installing Windows 8 Pro (which came as an upgrade from a previous version of Windows) I created an account. Let's call it "DC". During the upgrade Windows used up quite a lot of space for that account: about 25 GB.
Now when Windows 8 is installed I went into the Control Panel / Users and removed the "DC" account. I also made sure to check the box to remove all of its files.
But when I go the "C:UsersDC" folder on the hard drive, I see that the DC files are still there:
If I do it's properties it shows that it still takes 25 GB of space, that I want to reclaim. (I have a 256 GB SSD, so as you see I can't waste that much space!)
So I log in as a built-in administrator and try to delete those files (by deleting the "C:UsersDC" folder in Windows Explorer.) After a quick investigation it turns out that the most of the space is used up by the "Windows.old" file. But no matter what I do, it always results in this window:
I tried booting in a safe mode and it still gave me the same error. How to remove that "C:UsersDC" folder?
I have a 2-month-old Dell Inspiron 15 notebook running Windows 8.0, and trying to upgrade to 8.1. I have plenty of HD space and 4GB memory. I have 2 user accounts, one with admin designation. I want to change the admin to the other, but I cannot. When I try to change the user accounts, I get a message requiring the account with admin to OK any changes.
When I enter that account's password, I get a message that the password is incorrect. I changed the password in the "reset password" site online, but that password doesn't work in the change users part of the PC. So I am stuck. Right now, I cannot affect any changes to the system, because that requires the OK of the admin user account, and that in turn requires a password, which seems not to match the password that I entered for that account.

However it keeps trying to log into an "Other Account", I don't have another account, that's just what it says. Following the steps outlined on this site, which has been highly useful, i have learned that the home edition of Windows 8, which i have, is rather more useless in changing many settings that were taken for granted in win7.
My issue in changing my account to an admin account is after successfully activating the admin account and signing into that, the changes i make in that account to my standard account, are not saved or reflected when i log back into my standard (or what should now be an admin) account.
My standard account remains a standard account no matter how many times i log into the admin account and change the account type.I am more than frustrated by the lack of ease Windows 8 has infused into what should be a simple process of having my account be the administrator account.

View 3 Replies View RelatedSo for some reason, windows 8 thought it would be funny to change my user name to Al Ex instead of Alex, AND since you can't have space on the address bar, the folder ended up calling Al.
This annoyed me a lot more than it should have, because i have tried changing the user name through control panel, but that just changes the display name, not the folder's name. How do i rename it?

I want to change the name of my user folder to C:UsersNick. I'm wondering what is the best way to go about doing this. I followed the tutorial on renaming user accounts and it worked except that my user folder is still C:UsersAcer. I thought about making a new user account with the proper name and copying whatever I needed over to the new account but I don't think thats going to turn out too well (programs looking for a C:UsersAcer folder that no longer exists)....
