Windows 8.1 - Cannot Create New User Account

May 17, 2014

Win 8.1. I created a new user account with administrator privileges as usual, but the new account does not show when I log off or try change accounts. It also isn't listed on the upper right corner of the start page.

Basically even though I see it in other accounts through the settings menu, I can't switch to it.If I go to disk C/users it's not listed. I turned on Guest Account and also I can't choose it.

Accounts :: Windows 8 Pro - Can't Create User Account Despite Being Admin

Jun 10, 2013

I am using windows 8 pro OS. I have only one local account on my machine. My account is already in Administrator groups. I have checked that.

My problem is that I am not able to create/change any user account from control panel. After traversing to Control PanelAll Control Panel ItemsUser Accounts.

There are all the different links named as below:
Change your account name
Change your account type
Manage other account etc..

However when I click on any of these links, nothing happens at all !!!

What could be the possible reason of this? Window is updated, I am able to do other stuff that only admin can do for example: installing/uninstalling software, running system tools etc. Moreover I am able to make changes to user accounts from Computer Management.

Unable To Create Or Manage User Account In Windows 8 64 Bit

Jul 17, 2013

First of all i was unable to configure my advanced power options, i.e- create new power plan, choose what power button does or closing lid does? I restored the settings & restarted but couldn't solve it. This is what i get while trying to fix this:-

Somehow, then i thought of creating another admin account and config the settings there, to see if it works out. But, through Control Panel>User accounts i couldn't manage existing account and neither i am able to create new account.

Another thing i noticed is when i go to PC settings through windows 8 new feature - charm menu, i couldn't find the Users menu. Now, these things are not normal at all.

Accounts :: Win 8.1 Home - Merge Domain User Account With Local User Account

Aug 28, 2014

I have a user with a machine that was setup with Win 8.1 Home. The machine has been upgraded to 8.1 Pro and joined to a domain (WinSrv 2003). I need to get the content/configuration from their old local machine user profile to their new domain user profile.

I tried to copy the contents of their ../users/<name>/.. folder from the local user profile to the new domain user profile (after they had logged in once, and then logged off). This did not work. When I did the copy, I grabbed all files, including hidden...was that my mistake, or is the issue broader?

In the end....they want their old stuff and configuration under their new credentials/profile.

Can I Remove User Accounts in Windows 8? - Windows 8 -

This is pretty insane because all I had to do was enter an email address; no name, no password, nothing. Now, all I have is an email address, and of course no name and no password. So, exactly how am I supposed to enter a name and password din SQL server, for the security to work, or whatever, when these things don't exist, and there's no way to create them.

I've been working on this project for weeks now, simply because every time I need to do something, I literally can't do what I need to do.

The REAL problem is that I have to use SQL Server to login to Windows. My Windows 8 works fine, and my SQL Server works fine, but they won't work together. That's the entire problem that I'm dealing with.

Trying To Remove Windows 8 User Account Files

Jul 27, 2013

So when I was installing Windows 8 Pro (which came as an upgrade from a previous version of Windows) I created an account. Let's call it "DC". During the upgrade Windows used up quite a lot of space for that account: about 25 GB.

Now when Windows 8 is installed I went into the Control Panel / Users and removed the "DC" account. I also made sure to check the box to remove all of its files.

But when I go the "C:UsersDC" folder on the hard drive, I see that the DC files are still there:

If I do it's properties it shows that it still takes 25 GB of space, that I want to reclaim. (I have a 256 GB SSD, so as you see I can't waste that much space!)

So I log in as a built-in administrator and try to delete those files (by deleting the "C:UsersDC" folder in Windows Explorer.) After a quick investigation it turns out that the most of the space is used up by the "Windows.old" file. But no matter what I do, it always results in this window:

I tried booting in a safe mode and it still gave me the same error. How to remove that "C:UsersDC" folder?

This annoyed me a lot more than it should have, because i have tried changing the user name through control panel, but that just changes the display name, not the folder's name. How do i rename it?

Accounts :: How To Create Administrator Account

Jul 9, 2013

So I was selling my computer to my grandmother, and my dad took it over to her house to set it up. He somehow managed to completely lock everything down. He created an account for her, but we never once were able to log into it. But he also deactivated me as an administrator.

So now I have my computer back, and I am trying to set up the accounts, but I cannot do anything as I am no longer an admin. From what I have gathered, im up the creek without a paddle!

How do I create an administrator account without an admin accoutn already in place?

Security :: Windows 8.1 Unknown User Account Permission

Sep 15, 2014

I was transferring files from one external drive to another, I found a problem with a set of folders that I could not transfer with permission which should have been fine as I have administrator rights.

Looking at the folder permissions I found an unknown user account

Looking for solutions I tried to delete this account but was not allowed unless I turned off inherited permissions

I tried turning off the inheritance but this resulted in an error saying it failed to enumerate the number of objects in the container access denied.

Looking at some individual files (in one of the offending folders) properties showed 'Unable to display current owner' selecting the 'Change' option allowed me to change the file ownership to Everyone - Full Control and I could then move or delete the file.

There are quite a lot of files to do so is there a way to change all the affected folder & file permissions in one move?

But today... when I turned on my computer... I signed into my account like always (the only admin account on the computer)... and it keeps signing me into a temporary profile instead.

A balloon pops up in the corner, telling me it's a temporary account and to try again later or something.

I restarted the computer about five times... but still... it takes me to a temporary account, rather than my real account.

Customize Windows 8 User Account Picture / Lock Screen When Unactivated

Aug 22, 2012

I installed Windows 8 early to setup everything up so when it comes out in October I can just buy it and activate it. Then I got tired of not being able to customize anything so I found where Windows stores various images and here they are.

Note: After each one you may have to restart explorer.exe (cmd> tskill explorer)

Tools:Take Ownership registry edit- [URL] ....

User Account Picture:

-Go to C: Drive

-In the ribbon go to "View" Tab and choose "Options"> In the new windows go to "View"> choose to Show Hidden files

-Back in the explorer go to "ProgramData" since it is not hidden anymore

-Then Microsoft> then User Account Pictures

-The images you want to change are user.bmp, user.png, user-40.png, user-200.png (You may not see the .png or .bmp)

Now in Photoshop (or any other image editing software) make 4 images of the image you want using these settings:

user.bmp= .bmp, 480x480
user.png= .png, 480x480
user-40.png- .png, 40x40
user-200.png- .png, 200x200

Here is a pic of mine:

user.jpg

Lock Screen:

This took me a while as it was harder then I thought, but here is a simplified version of what I did.

1. Download and install the takeown script to registry (This will save you a lot of time and trouble)

2. Go to "C:WindowsWebScreen" and replace img100.jpg with the image you want (make sure you have the same name)

3)Go to "C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindows" and right click the "SystemData" folder and choose "Take Ownership" now you can enter the folder by pressing continue

4) Now go to S-1-5-18>ReadOnly>LockScreen_Z and replace the image with the same image you replaced in step 2, but remember to change your images file name to the one of the image your replacing. For example in step 2 it was called "img100" and this one the same image is now called "LockScreen___1920_1080" for me.

5) Now for the last one is in "C:WindowsWinSxS"

6) You will see tons of folders just use the search and search for 'img100" and when you find the correct image open the folder (right click>open file location) and replace img100 with your lockscreen image (once again make sure you keep the same file name so make sure your new lock screen says img100)

It seems like a lot to change the lock screen, but I had to change all of them to change that one setting

Start Screen: [URL] ......

Look at the bottom of this post under, "Programs to do these process for you", if you want a easier way.

1) Hold windows key and press R (win+R)

2) Paste "c:windowssystem32oobemsoobe.exe" -without quotes

3) Wait a second for it to popup and select your color

4) Alt+tab out or just press ctrl+shift+esc to bring up task manager

5) Kill msoobe.exe (it may be under Background Processes)

6) Restart explorer (cmd (or win+r)> tskill explorer)

Programs to do these process for you:I personally prefer to do manual edits, but I know some people do not or have a harder time so here are two programs I found that will change account picture and start screen. Then as a bonus it will also remove the activate water marks.

[URL]

Note: It did change the color (a simple registry edit), but it failed to change the start screen for me.

Dell :: Store Does Not Recognize Administrator User Account When Attempting To Upgrade From Windows 8 To 8.1

Feb 8, 2014

I purchased a Inspiron 17 7737 directly from [URL] on 12/5/2013.  It was delivered on 12/182013.  It had Windows 8 as the operating system.  I had assumed that it would have the latest version of Windows when it arrived since 8.1 had been issued in October. I opened the Store app and the upgrade to Windows 8.1 was not available to me.  I understood that this was a problem for others and did not pursue it further at that time.  I was out of town for 2 weeks in January and did not use the laptop during that 2 week period.  When I returned, I opened the Store and found prominently placed the invitation to the free upgrade to 8.1. I was signed in using the Administrator account and when I hit the download button for 8.1. I was given the message "You need to use an account with Administrator privileges to install Windows 8.1, try logging in with the user account of an administrator of this PC and try update again".

I verified that my account had Administrator privileges and tried again and got the same message. I created another user account and gave it administrator privileges and tried the download again signed in on that account and got the same message.  I called technical support and for over 5 hours over 2 different days, the technician attempted to resolve the issue by uninstalling and reinstalling Windows updates. When that failed to resolve the problem, he "refreshed" my PC which, I understood put it back to the status it was in at time of delivery. He then had to do all the Windows updates (approximately 65) and tried to download 8.1 again.

This did not change the error message when trying to download to 8.1.  At that point, I was told that they were elevating it to a technical team who would research all the logs from my machine and come up with a solution.  They indicated that they would call me back when a solution is found. Although my Administrator account was not recognized when attempting to do the 8.1 download, it recognized the Administrator role when the technician needed administrative approval to do all the uninstall and reinstall activities when trying to resolve the issue.
