View 4 RepliesI purchased a Inspiron 17 7737 directly from [URL] on 12/5/2013. It was delivered on 12/182013. It had Windows 8 as the operating system. I had assumed that it would have the latest version of Windows when it arrived since 8.1 had been issued in October. I opened the Store app and the upgrade to Windows 8.1 was not available to me. I understood that this was a problem for others and did not pursue it further at that time. I was out of town for 2 weeks in January and did not use the laptop during that 2 week period. When I returned, I opened the Store and found prominently placed the invitation to the free upgrade to 8.1. I was signed in using the Administrator account and when I hit the download button for 8.1. I was given the message "You need to use an account with Administrator privileges to install Windows 8.1, try logging in with the user account of an administrator of this PC and try update again".
I verified that my account had Administrator privileges and tried again and got the same message. I created another user account and gave it administrator privileges and tried the download again signed in on that account and got the same message. I called technical support and for over 5 hours over 2 different days, the technician attempted to resolve the issue by uninstalling and reinstalling Windows updates. When that failed to resolve the problem, he "refreshed" my PC which, I understood put it back to the status it was in at time of delivery. He then had to do all the Windows updates (approximately 65) and tried to download 8.1 again.
This did not change the error message when trying to download to 8.1. At that point, I was told that they were elevating it to a technical team who would research all the logs from my machine and come up with a solution. They indicated that they would call me back when a solution is found. Although my Administrator account was not recognized when attempting to do the 8.1 download, it recognized the Administrator role when the technician needed administrative approval to do all the uninstall and reinstall activities when trying to resolve the issue.
On Windows 8 how do you get a program and associated files from administrator account to a user account. Specifically MS Money.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a user with a machine that was setup with Win 8.1 Home. The machine has been upgraded to 8.1 Pro and joined to a domain (WinSrv 2003). I need to get the content/configuration from their old local machine user profile to their new domain user profile.
I tried to copy the contents of their ../users/<name>/.. folder from the local user profile to the new domain user profile (after they had logged in once, and then logged off). This did not work. When I did the copy, I grabbed all files, including hidden...was that my mistake, or is the issue broader?
In the end....they want their old stuff and configuration under their new credentials/profile.
I've just bought a new laptop with Windows 8.1 and have been playing around with the settings etc. and have a question regarding the Lock screen.
I have personalised the lock screen with my own picture but have decided that I don't like it and would just prefer to use one of the default pictures, but there doesn't seem to be anyway of deleting the picture I have added.
I've tried searching for the picture on the laptop but have had no success finding it. How delete this picture?
I bought a shiny new laptop yesterday with windows 8 pre-installed. After setting a few things up, i restarted the computer for the first time. At this time the computer downloaded many updates. On start up since my user account has been downgraded to a guest account. This is the only account on the computer, as such i do not have administrator rights and i am unable to log in as an administrator.
May I have to restore the computer back to factory settings but how to do this without being the administrator.
I have Windows 8 home with IE 10. I want to DISABLE selective browser history deletion (open history, right-click-delete certain websites). I don't have gpedit.msc but I believe it falls under the "Prevent User from deleting websites visited" or something along those lines. I found a registry key edit "CleanHistory" and I have changed the value back and forth from 0 and 1 but it still hasn't stopped me from being able to selectively delete. I found the registry key on multiple websites so I imagine it's supposed to work but it just isn't. User error, perhaps?
View 1 Replies View RelatedHow come the UAC is set to the lowest setting for the admin, but for a standard user it is still set as default (requiring admin password)?
View 1 Replies View RelatedWin 8.1. I created a new user account with administrator privileges as usual, but the new account does not show when I log off or try change accounts. It also isn't listed on the upper right corner of the start page.
Basically even though I see it in other accounts through the settings menu, I can't switch to it.If I go to disk C/users it's not listed. I turned on Guest Account and also I can't choose it.
So when I was installing Windows 8 Pro (which came as an upgrade from a previous version of Windows) I created an account. Let's call it "DC". During the upgrade Windows used up quite a lot of space for that account: about 25 GB.
Now when Windows 8 is installed I went into the Control Panel / Users and removed the "DC" account. I also made sure to check the box to remove all of its files.
But when I go the "C:UsersDC" folder on the hard drive, I see that the DC files are still there:
If I do it's properties it shows that it still takes 25 GB of space, that I want to reclaim. (I have a 256 GB SSD, so as you see I can't waste that much space!)
So I log in as a built-in administrator and try to delete those files (by deleting the "C:UsersDC" folder in Windows Explorer.) After a quick investigation it turns out that the most of the space is used up by the "Windows.old" file. But no matter what I do, it always results in this window:
I tried booting in a safe mode and it still gave me the same error. How to remove that "C:UsersDC" folder?
I have 2 accounts as in the picture ( i tried to upload it but failed ):
I can't delete the one named administrator. I want to delete it because i'm getting this "preparing windows" like each 3 days ( temporary account ) . I might have deleted the registry for the user "administrator" a long time ago ....
So for some reason, windows 8 thought it would be funny to change my user name to Al Ex instead of Alex, AND since you can't have space on the address bar, the folder ended up calling Al.
This annoyed me a lot more than it should have, because i have tried changing the user name through control panel, but that just changes the display name, not the folder's name. How do i rename it?
yesterday I tried to disable User account in W8.1 pro rtm version WZT,after windows restart and I tried to Enable back change user account control settings can not be clicked again,I've tried a few click nothing at all resfone VR1ULKy.png
View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently deleted a user account, and clicked yes to also delete all associated files...the user was successfully deleted, however, the user's folders/files remain, and cannot be deleted. Is it possible to associate that user's folder with a new user's login? If not, what needs to be done in order to delete the remaining user folder?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was transferring files from one external drive to another, I found a problem with a set of folders that I could not transfer with permission which should have been fine as I have administrator rights.
Looking at the folder permissions I found an unknown user account
Looking for solutions I tried to delete this account but was not allowed unless I turned off inherited permissions
I tried turning off the inheritance but this resulted in an error saying it failed to enumerate the number of objects in the container access denied.
Looking at some individual files (in one of the offending folders) properties showed 'Unable to display current owner' selecting the 'Change' option allowed me to change the file ownership to Everyone - Full Control and I could then move or delete the file.
There are quite a lot of files to do so is there a way to change all the affected folder & file permissions in one move?
Recently upgraded to Windows 8.1 on three PC's on home network but now I'm having a problem on my ASUS VivoTab Smart Tablet.
My main login screen has been setup to show three (3) users but shortly after upgrading, it started showing a fourth user. The user name for this fourth user is "zqtjerxnjfcz". When I clicked on it, it started the customizing process for a new user. As soon as I could I signed out and logged in under my own account and then deleted this new unwanted account but it keeps returning, usually after a restart or signing out and back in.
I am using windows 8 pro OS. I have only one local account on my machine. My account is already in Administrator groups. I have checked that.
My problem is that I am not able to create/change any user account from control panel. After traversing to Control PanelAll Control Panel ItemsUser Accounts.
There are all the different links named as below:
Change your account name
Change your account type
Manage other account etc..
However when I click on any of these links, nothing happens at all !!!
What could be the possible reason of this? Window is updated, I am able to do other stuff that only admin can do for example: installing/uninstalling software, running system tools etc. Moreover I am able to make changes to user accounts from Computer Management.
First of all i was unable to configure my advanced power options, i.e- create new power plan, choose what power button does or closing lid does? I restored the settings & restarted but couldn't solve it. This is what i get while trying to fix this:-
Somehow, then i thought of creating another admin account and config the settings there, to see if it works out. But, through Control Panel>User accounts i couldn't manage existing account and neither i am able to create new account.
Another thing i noticed is when i go to PC settings through windows 8 new feature - charm menu, i couldn't find the Users menu. Now, these things are not normal at all.
This morning when I switched on my pc my user account was gone and windows created a temporary one so I could log in. How to set my previous one as the main one coz its still there just doesn't appear anywhere where I can select it.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI've just installed a new HP laptop for my sister, who's upgraded from an old XP desktop. In doing the install, I have inadvertently created two user accounts (I'm new to Win 8), both with passwords. She doesn't want this, as it's a computer for all the family to use. How do I remove the accounts, or, at least remove the need to enter a password every time she boots up?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've had my Windows 8 computer for several months... it's been working really well, absolutely no problems.
But today... when I turned on my computer... I signed into my account like always (the only admin account on the computer)... and it keeps signing me into a temporary profile instead.
A balloon pops up in the corner, telling me it's a temporary account and to try again later or something.
I restarted the computer about five times... but still... it takes me to a temporary account, rather than my real account.
I've been trying to set my brothers laptop to auto log in the user account without password using control userpasswords via command prompt but i'm having problems.
I supposed to get this screen below
But I get this screen below and can't change the to auto login
I deleted my main windows user account and ever since ive been working tirelessly to try and fix the problem. Every time I boot up it automatically takes me to a temporary profile with the same name as the previous one that i deleted and because its a temp profile i cant access most things, and believe me I've tried everything (system restore, hidden admin) but nothing will work and i just want to create a new user and forget that one, is this possible or will i have to reset my pc?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been using windows 8 for just about a week now. I have made a new admin local account and have deleted the old admin local account but when I go into C:/Users the deleted user account files are still there. When I go to delete these files, a message comes up telling me that I don't have the permission to delete these files. I have read online and searched alot but came across no fix. I have tried turning of windows features, then I tried deleting the files through command prompt using rd /s /q but still no luck. I tried this method using safe mode command prompt but still no luck.

I have an acer aspire one. the user account is stuck on guest. I cany do anything without the guest popping up and requesting an administrator sign on which I don't have. the computer just stuck in limbo.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI was told to never use the Guest user account as it was not safe to use. I was told that I should open up another standard account without a password.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed Windows 8 early to setup everything up so when it comes out in October I can just buy it and activate it. Then I got tired of not being able to customize anything so I found where Windows stores various images and here they are.
Note: After each one you may have to restart explorer.exe (cmd> tskill explorer)
Tools:Take Ownership registry edit- [URL] ....
User Account Picture:
-Go to C: Drive
-In the ribbon go to "View" Tab and choose "Options"> In the new windows go to "View"> choose to Show Hidden files
-Back in the explorer go to "ProgramData" since it is not hidden anymore
-Then Microsoft> then User Account Pictures
-The images you want to change are user.bmp, user.png, user-40.png, user-200.png (You may not see the .png or .bmp)
Now in Photoshop (or any other image editing software) make 4 images of the image you want using these settings:
user.bmp= .bmp, 480x480
user.png= .png, 480x480
user-40.png- .png, 40x40
user-200.png- .png, 200x200
Here is a pic of mine:

Lock Screen:
This took me a while as it was harder then I thought, but here is a simplified version of what I did.
1. Download and install the takeown script to registry (This will save you a lot of time and trouble)
2. Go to "C:WindowsWebScreen" and replace img100.jpg with the image you want (make sure you have the same name)
3)Go to "C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindows" and right click the "SystemData" folder and choose "Take Ownership" now you can enter the folder by pressing continue
4) Now go to S-1-5-18>ReadOnly>LockScreen_Z and replace the image with the same image you replaced in step 2, but remember to change your images file name to the one of the image your replacing. For example in step 2 it was called "img100" and this one the same image is now called "LockScreen___1920_1080" for me.
5) Now for the last one is in "C:WindowsWinSxS"
6) You will see tons of folders just use the search and search for 'img100" and when you find the correct image open the folder (right click>open file location) and replace img100 with your lockscreen image (once again make sure you keep the same file name so make sure your new lock screen says img100)
It seems like a lot to change the lock screen, but I had to change all of them to change that one setting
Start Screen: [URL] ......
Look at the bottom of this post under, "Programs to do these process for you", if you want a easier way.
1) Hold windows key and press R (win+R)
2) Paste "c:windowssystem32oobemsoobe.exe" -without quotes
3) Wait a second for it to popup and select your color
4) Alt+tab out or just press ctrl+shift+esc to bring up task manager
5) Kill msoobe.exe (it may be under Background Processes)
6) Restart explorer (cmd (or win+r)> tskill explorer)
Programs to do these process for you:I personally prefer to do manual edits, but I know some people do not or have a harder time so here are two programs I found that will change account picture and start screen. Then as a bonus it will also remove the activate water marks.

Note: It did change the color (a simple registry edit), but it failed to change the start screen for me.
Windows 8 creates a roaming profile in the C:Users directory using xxxxxx_000 subdirectories for each Microsoft account which is created.
Apparently, these subdirectories are only temporary directories that are recreated each time a user logs on to Windows 8 via these accounts.
Is there a way to make sure that these profiles are completely deleted when the user logs off from his Microsoft account?
Bought a new laptop for my daughter with win 8 and got it set up. Being the newbie I am, every time my daughter starts her laptop my name appears on the user account. She wants thi changed. How I change the name of the user account. This is the only account on the laptop and it has administrator status (I did however get name of computer right) ?
View 3 Replies View Relatedthis is a known issue and may users have been facing exactly the same problem with Windows 8 (source: Google)
Problem: I can't change my User Account picture. Whenever I click on the "Browse" button, nothing happens. Same goes for whenever I try to change the Lock Screen.
I read somewhere CCleaner removes some essential shortcuts which can prevent that, but I don't see that being the case coz I restored all the icons and even ran "sfc /scannow" just to be sure of that.
