View 2 RepliesI have been using Windows 8. Very often when I am on the internet or on the desktop screen and I move my finger on the mouse pad, the Start screen automatically comes on. This happens when I move my finger on the mouse pad and the screen automatically goes to the Start screen. Something that would prevent the computer screen moving to the Start screen even when I do not want that screen.
View 1 Replies View RelatedBesides not having any drag and drop features for icons or files, I also cannot move the entire window by clicking and holding the mouse button on the title. I cannot re-size a window either. The close, minimize, and restore down/maximize buttons work. Sometimes when I double click on the title bar the window will restore down/maximize, but not always.
The slider bars only work if they are clicked in (and then only sometimes) and take a second to respond or will not respond at all; I cannot drag them. I cannot highlight any text to copy it; I assume because that is also a drag function.
Frequently, windows will not respond for up to a minute or longer and sometimes I stop them because they have not responded for more than 5 minutes. Mouse clicks frequently take 3 or 4 seconds to respond in all programs. I am not a knowledgeable computer person and do not know if this is caused by Windows 8 or the hardware.
I have tried to restore the system (three times), but there was only one restore point and that failed. I have tried using escape, various other keys, the right mouse button, and restarting. I gave up on restarting after well over 3 hours because there is a queue of 21 updates that have failed before and it was only on update 10. Shutting down and restarting does not work.
I have McAfee and have scanned the computer 3 times and not found anything wrong.
big problem for everyone who uses an SSD for the sytem drive and used audit mode to relocate Users to another drive. Is there a GA iso available yet?n Or a way to burn an iso from what we've downloaded from the MS Store?
This seems like a pretty glaring oversight now that MS is pushing to get rid of optical media. Things fail, often catastrophically (esp Windows).
I have had to do a system restore on my desktop 2 times because the Microsoft update rendered my windows 8 desktop useless unless in safe mode, THEN it showed my mouse pointer. the unifying software shows the little orange unifying logo every time i move my mouse, but no pointer. so i just disabled Microsoft updates.
On the laptop, it's my friends and his mousepad/trackpad died so i gave him my old mx anywhere k360 keyboard and tried to pair it with the software, SAME issue. I am not going to system restore his laptop but i believe the mouse that's on my desktop is the 810 gaming mouse? I had to do a system restore twice and now it's happening on my friends laptop.
I disabled windows updates and restarted my computer because i installed a program. when it booted, again, no mouse pointer again, so it's not the windows update. so i had to do a system restore again....
I have an HP Envy dv7 laptop running windows 8.1 I forgot my windows password so I made a 3rd party password reset disk. I changed the bios to legacy and disabled secure boot. The disk wouldn't load so I set the bios back to the original settings. Now I hear the chime that windows has loaded but there is a black screen.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI Upgraded Windows 7 Home Premium 64 to Windows 8 Pro. Windows 8 now boots to the "Start Page" then a couple seconds later goes to the Desktop. This isn't something I configured it just does it. I do have Start8 from Stardock installed but it isn't configured to go to the desktop on boot either.
How I can stop this behavior and have Windows 8 stay at the Start Page on Boot?
Per this article below, I used the advanced startup menu in Win 8.1 to disable signed driver checking.Windows 8 and Intel USB 3.0 Host Controllers | Plugable
After I installed some unsigned Intel Usb 3.0 drivers, every time I shutdown and restart the machine from the old (Win 7) desktop, or the Metro UI, the machine now ALWAYS reboots/restarts with the Advanced startup menu.
After upgrading to Windows 8.1, I started experiencing a weird boot issue. When I boot Windows I only get a black, empty screen. As soon as the BIOS splash disappears the computer stops booting. No disk activity, nothing. My first instinct was to run bootrec /fixmbr and bootrec /fixboot from the Windows 8 install/recovery DVD. This temporarily solves my issue, but the problem returns on next boot.
I already had this issue before the 8.1 update, but it only occurred sporadically. I would usually work around this issue by rebooting.
This is rather ironic. Most people complain about booting to the new Start page and want to boot the the Desktop. I would rather boot the new Start page but my new Asus Windows 8 computer boots to the start page initially but after about three seconds automatically goes to the desktop.
View 9 Replies View RelatedRunning Windows 8, the system boots into a user account without login.
The launcher seems to work, I can bring up the desktop. From the desktop I cannot launch any programs, other than a non-admin DOS window- but from there I can't launch any other non command.com EXE.
When I try and run any desktop app, the icon comes up and highlights for about 5-10 seconds, then goes back to normal. I can't even ht CTRL-ALT-DEL and run Task Manager. It just never comes up.
Logging out never gets me back to the login screen.
I can swap accounts- but the other account never gets logged in. Just waits forever (or, at least, a long time).
When I launch Metro apps, the splash comes up to the app... and that's it. I can CTRL-F4 it, and that's it.
Hitting F8 on boot doesn't do anything (no safe mode anymore?).
The Last couple weeks after I finshed reinstalling a fresh copy of windows 8.1 after my computer has been shut down for a couple of hours when I turn on I receive most of the time random BSOD ranging from bad memory management, page file in no fault, and so forth. But when I restart after the bsod the computer runs fine. Once in a blue moon it takes maybe 2 restarts to finally boot it correctly. I have rain Driver verifer and I uninstalled ai suite 2 when their drivers kept crashing it.
I had also ran windows mem diag during a cold boot period and it showed no errors. I have also tried returning to stock clocks and still running in to the same issue after a bit of time.
I am currently running:
Windows 8.1pro
i7 3770k over clock to 4.6 on an Asus Sabertooth z77
G.SKILL Sniper Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) X2
OCZ vertex 4 128 ssd
1tb WD black hd
2tb Seagate barracuda hd

PSU is a corsair AX 1200i

I am trying to install windows 8.1 on my old windows xp laptop using a bootable USB from the universal USB installer, and when i press f10 on my laptop, and tell it to boot from my USB, it pulls up a black screen with a blinking line(like a terminal). i tried pressing a bunch of keys, and the only one that i got a response from was the enter key, which made a beeping noise.should i use a different program to put the ISO on my USB?
I'm going to try a program that i used a long time ago when the UUI wasn't working called Rufus. I'll let you all know if it works. Also I'll set it to NTFS instead of fat32 and see if that works.
Windows 8 boots up pretty quickly, but it takes a notably long time (compare to Windows 7) for it to show up the system tray applications. In Windows 7 it is almost instant.
Is this Microsoft's problem or the app maker's problem?
Also, the apps seem to load sequentially. Is there a way to rearrange them so that the ones I want load quickly. I need AutoHotKey, Logitech Setpoint and Logitech Gaming Software to load up ASAP. Rest can take their sweet time.
Also this is what the TaskManager's startup performance analysis looks like.
Having this *feature* means that Microsoft can blame the app maker for the slow startup. But why doesn't that happen in Windows 7? Is this because Desktop is another app, and stuff don't really get priority?
Also I still cannot find why PeerBlock would not start when placed in the classic Startup folder.
Ok, so I made a local account, because I don't give a rat's about all that Sync stuff. I found out how (from these forums) to make it automatically log you into an account. However it keeps trying to log into an "Other Account", I don't have another account, that's just what it says. Then it of course says incorrect Username or Password, because there isn't one, so I have to click sign into a different account, and then click my normal account, defeating the whole purpose of having it automatically sign in,
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have Windows 8 Pro 64 bit. My computer was running fine until about 1 hour ago; now there is more lag. Substantial slowness when it boots up, small lag between my typing and what's seen on screen, lag opening and closing programs, etc. I can no longer use Dragon NatuallySpeaking because the computer is too slow.
This is not due to bloatware or too many apps--It happened suddenly (computer started slowing down right away). I have not installed any new programs. I have tried both shutting down and restarting my computer.
How do I get rid of the start and log in screens when 8.1 boots? I would like to go straight to my desktop.
Also, can I get rid of the Windows start button and use Classic Shell instead?
I have a laptop that comes with windows 8 ..my question is can we move it to another pc?? cause i want to install Windows 8 on my desktop..
View 9 Replies View RelatedI do not want to use the built in Windows 8 Mail app but that is what I am currently using. I would like to use Thunderbird so I downloaded that but when I go to the import option within Thunderbird, Windows 8 Mail doesn't come up as an option to import from. How can I move all of my mail messages (and the account settings) from Windows 8 Mail to Thunderbird? It is a POP account so I can't just log in and redownload them. I only have one email account.
I would also like to import all of my contacts from the built in Windows app into Thunderbird.
I'm trying to understand the licence on my Windows 8 Media. I bought Windows 8.0 last year, not an upgrade, and not with a PC.
It's got a section on installing on a PC for personal use. I want to un-install/remove from 1 PC, and install it on a New PC.
It's not clear how I achieve this.? The only 3 things it's say's I cant do:
- Use as upgrade
- Legalize a non-genuine install
- License more than 5 copies for commercial use.??
So is there a method to follow to avoid activation issues.? And it telling me this is already installed on another PC.?
Basically, what I mean in W7.
You have Hard Disk Drive
Devices With Removable Storage
Network Location
In Windows 8
I have folders
Devices With Removable Storage
Network Location
Any ways to hide the folders in this PC.
I built a new PC to be used primarily for gaming purposes, so I installed Windows 8 Pro onto 128GB SSD. I wanted to move my User profile to my HDD, and followed the directions posted here: User Profiles - Relocate to another Partition or Disk
After doing this and exiting Audit mode, Windows acted as if I had were installing the OS and wanted a product key. I skipped this step, went through the configuration, but when I used my email for my Windows account, it says that a user is already using that account on my PC. Obviously, because I had been using my computer earlier today. So since it knows there is a user with that account, why can't I access it when I start my computer? A friend of mine says I may have installed Windows twice on accident, but he isn't sure.
MS butchered the File Explorer in 8.1.
I recall seeing a link a while ago about how to move the "Libraries" folder back above "This PC", but I can't seem to find it.
What is the procedure for doing this?
Windows 8.1
Windows8.1.jpg
Windows 8
Windows8.jpg
I figured it out:
Code:
Original
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{031E4825-7B94-4dc3-B131-E946B44C8DD5}]
"SortOrderIndex"=dword:00000054
New
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{031E4825-7B94-4dc3-B131-E946B44C8DD5}]
"SortOrderIndex"=dword:00000042
Everything is back as it should be.
I think many people will move to windows 8.1 if Microsoft will fix the deleting of thumbnail cache in "Winodws 8.1 2014 Update".
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Windows 8 tablet/ultrabook (Lenovo Yoga). I primarily use the desktop to operate and have many icons and shortcuts arranged to facilitate the use of my computer.
When I use my PC in tablet mode, sometimes I rotate the screen to read PDFs, certain webpages, etc. When I rotate the screen back to a horizontal mode, all my carefully placed icons and shortcuts are shuffled around the desktop. I realize that when I rotate the screen the icons move because they have to temporarily reorient themselves to portrait vs landscape, but shouldn't they return to their original position when I rotate the screen back to the horizontal mode?
Is there a way to lock icons in place with Windows 8?
Last night clean installed windows 7 pro and noticed that system reserved partition is created with 100MB. Then upgrade it to windows 8 pro and finally updated it to windows 8.1 pro.
After complete installation of windows 8.1 pro and noticed in computer management that still system reserved partition is 100MB. whereas if in case i did clean installation of windows 8 pro then system reserved partition will be 350MB.
My HDD capacity is 2TB and i have nearly 1TB of unallocated space. C drive is 200GB
Therefore i would like to increase my system reserved partition from 100MB to 350MB.
How to increase system reserved partition from 100MB to 350MB with step by step ?
What is the advantages of allowing 350MB to system reserved partition in windows 8.1 pro?
I have a windows 8 laptop. I bought a SSD and want to move windows to the SSD and use the HDD for media and games.
How do I do this without windows forcing me to the error page
I have a new Lenovo G580, came with Windows 8. When it first arrived I mistakenly added new partitions (repartitioned) to the hard drive. (Actually it should not be a mistake - It should allow me to do so, its my choice.) . After I repartitioned I realized that reinstalling partition of Windows 8 no longer works through onekeyrecovery of Lenovo. All the partitions are there - including the hidden partitions arrived with PC - all the recovery partitions but it does no longer reinstall Windows.
I called Lenovo - I believe they will send me the new recovery disks, if so. But until then I am trying to find a solution - and I learnt that there is a feature of resetting windows in the Windows settings "remove everything and reinstall windows."
I will use this option and make a recovery hidden folder and ISO myself with this fresh install of Windows with "paragon backup" etc.
But.... I need to know if this resetting PC option is really safe - If since the time I used Windows 8 until now, some viruses and malware spreaded into my computer - would these have the possibility to inject themselves to windows reset feature and the files it will use? As these should be in my C: drive I believe this is a possibility.
I will use this image after reset always for reinstalling Windows 8 so I have to make sure there are no viruses or malware entered into it.
I wish to purchase a new laptop that has Windows 8 OEM pre-installed on a 256GB SSD and a recovery partition. I would like to move the recovery partition to an USB drive using the feature available in Windows 8 and create another partition on the SSD for a different OS (linux). I have several questions:
1. Is there any difference between a recovery USB and the recovery partition on the SSD?
2. [Answered] If I completely wipe the original Windows 8 installation can I restore my system using the USB drive?
3. [Answered] During recovery, can I chose on what partition I want to install Windows 8 or create a new partition for it (similarly to a fresh install) or is the whole thing done automatically? I want to know if the recovery process wipes the whole SSD or only the Windows partition and if my other partitions will be left intact (I can live with it overriding the bootloader).
4. If I shrink the Windows 8 partition, can I still perform the recovery? (assuming that I have enough space for the installation).
My windows apps dont want to open, the store opens shows the brief case logo for a 2-3 seconds and it minimises when i click on it on it to open it again the same thing happens and all other apps dont even respond just their icon move a little on the sides to indicate they are clicked but they don't open at all.
I use windows 8 enterprise and it is activated, it happened before, one way to fix it but its annoying is to create new account and on it they work just fine, but the old one don't.
I can delete and it and recreate it but then i have to register some of my programs again. I read on the internet about that issue so my resolution is not the problem UAC is still on. I use windows defender for antivirus.
All I'm trying to do is move/organize my emails into folders, and although I can create a new folder, when the toolbar pops up, and I click on "MOVE", my screen greys out...has done this over and over.
