Windows 8 Is Not Showing The Edition
Oct 15, 2013I am running Windows 8 which came pre installed with my hp notebook, but all I see in system properties is "Windows 8" and I typed "winver" into run and all I see is "Windows 8" and nothing about an edition
I need to know this because I am getting an SSD and will need to make a Windows DVD so I can do a clean install onto it.

Jul 7, 2014I have to run a few programs only available on linux.
As seen on almost all the sources I visited, I installed VirtualBox and downloaded the last Ubuntu "iso" file. after having installed the new OS on virtualbox, I tried launching it and got the very often found "VT-x is disabled in the BIOS" error.
The solution also given in all the sources I visited is "enable Hyper-V" in the "windows features turn on or off" menu. Problem is : I can't find this option (I even looked in the least probable sub directories, just in case)
I found out this feature was only available for "Pro" versions of windows 8/8.1.
My question is : Is it feasible for me to run a virtual machine, or even run a machine on dual boot on my default-installed-windows 8 machine? I don't have the money to buy the pro package (which, for some reason, is MUCH more expensive than the "previous windows to 8.1 pro" update).
My hardware is more than sufficient: 64bits i7-4700HQ processor, 8Gb RAM DDR3l
Cannot Restore / Refresh Windows 8.1 Single Language Edition
May 29, 2014I've got a problem with Windows 8.1 Single Language Edition 64-bit (English/Russian/Ukrainian).
When Windows 8 updated to 8.1 last year through the Store, I lost the ability to Restore and Refresh (a feature I had used several times previously).
Since then I have been using the same installation of 8.1, and it has finally become too laggy and bloated and I need desperately to Restore (files are all backed up and removed from computer, ready for Restore).
Things I have tried already:
- Found my Product Key using a keyfind program. My version of 8.1 came preintalled on the laptop, no DVD case, or e-mails with Key.
- Made a recovery USB Flash Drive (my laptop doesn't have a DVD drive). Recovery drive works when I boot from BIOS, but says it is invalid when I try to Restore.
- Tried to download an official ISO file from Microsoft, but the site says my Product Key is invalid (its not invalid).
- Tried using the Enterprise Trial ISO to Restore, and am now stuck with an expired trial copy of Enterprise.
I still have the Recovery Partition, and didn't delete it when I made the Recovery USB.
My computer is an ASUS Zenbook prime UX31A. All I want is to Restore. Even if its back to Win 8. I do not understand why all options seem to be broken since the update to 8.1. It seems intentional.
I want to Restore legitimately, and use the product I bought legitimately. But if this continues I may have to seek "alternatives".
Backup Activation Of Windows 8 Pro Upgrade After Activating WMC Edition
Feb 23, 2013I tried the guide for activation backup but on reinstall the WMC is missing, so the restore of the activation status fails. Even it seems impossible to integrate the Media Center into the upgrade due to the encrypted install.esd file.
A fresh install via retail iso also failed with the "core" message (wrong version?) giving a slui code afterwards. How to manage to keep the activation intact using the Windows 8 Pro Upgrade?

Jan 20, 2013I have dell 14r special edition with win8. i'm trying to partition the drive and create extended partition. however the factory image is stored at the end of drive and all of the drive is considered as primary drive. i've two options
1. Delete or move the partition. if i do that will the recovery work.
2. Burn the factory image and delete the partition. but your backup software is not working for me to backup the image.

The problem is that some of the folders revert to the regular folder icon at every reboot yet a couple remain customized. It's the same folders every time and I cant figure it out.

Jul 9, 2014This is a new computer and OS for me, so I may just not be familiar with how it is SUPPOSED to work. When we got the computer I loaded Office, Photoshop, Browsers, etc. I set up the tiles on the start menu. But since the computer rebooted (and every time since then), the tiles have disappeared and the computer acts like its the first time I've used Firefox ("do you want to make this your default browser?").
Each time I reboot, Word is still on the computer but it has to activate and set my initials as if I've never opened it on the computer before. The only hint of something I think I could do differently is that when I'm on the " PC Settings(?)" screen under Sync options it tells me I am logged into a temporary profile. I can't figure out how to change this though.
Charm Bars Suddenly Disappear
Mar 29, 2014Out of nowhere my charm bars will disappear and even the right-click on the windows symbol on the bottom left corner doesn't work anymore. I then have to ctrl+alt+del and sign out then sign in again then things magically go back to normal.

Nov 2, 2012I'm running Win 8 with two monitors, and am having the issue where the Start Screen will disappear once I click anywhere on my desktop on the other monitor. my eyes completely removes the purpose of running Windows 8 on a multi-monitor setup.

May 6, 2014I am running Windows 8.1 Pro X64. Recently I have noticed that Notification Area Icons for some apps have disappeared.
A reinstall or a repair install sometimes brings them back but then they disappear after a while, and usually after the next reboot.
Have checked forums for the affected products and the only solution offered there is reinstall or repair install. I very much doubt that this issue is down to the products. It is almost certainly a Windows problem but of course Windows Tech Support offers nothing other than the usual banal references to largely irrelevant "how to" articles.

Nov 19, 2013When I wanted to fix my Windows 8.1 because it wouldn't start, I saw ALL my restore points had disappeared. This has happened to me with all Windows operating systems I've had: Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and perhaps XP. When I need them most, they're gone, ALL OF THEM (not only those replaced for newer ones).
Last time this happened, Windows 8.1 eventually fixed my system by applying "attempting repairs" (however this fix is called, it's an option when 8.1 cannot boot).
But why do the restore points disappear in Windows 7, 8 and 8.1? Can I save at least one to a disk or something? Instead of creating a system image, which is heavy and slow?.
Installed Programs Disappear On Start Screen
Jul 21, 2014Always keep a list of disabled services as you disable them! I spent a dramatic amount of time referencing 2-3 resources for each service I disabled and have had no issues up until now. I disabled a few in a row without restarting and managed to forget which they were. this has caused two issues If I can't/don't - the end result will be me having to reset them all to default, go through them one by one again - AND STILL not know which was the one(s) that caused my problem(s) which will risk the same thing happening again.
1) I set an account picture to my Microsoft.net account for windows 8.1x64 (the one that pops up when you turn on your PC and have to enter your password right after the lock screen but before windows) and after a restart, it disappears and goes back to the default grey square with a white outline of an avatar)
2) all my installed programs disappeared on the start screen! It's literally blank. I didn't have much due to it being a fairly new install but they all disappeared including PC settings and metro store (the two metro apps I had left). I checked if the apps still worked (mumble for example because it also disappeared) and they did, but if you go under program data/start menu/programs etc, all the folders with the app shortcuts in them are gone!
I tried to reinstall mumble; and it reinstalled fine, but still NO folder w shortcut being placed in the start menu therefore nothing being put on the start/apps screen. What on earth could be doing this service wise?

Jul 19, 2012When I don't use my taskbar (When I'm using a program or AFK), stuff appears in my taskbar. First it's usually a folder (like a folder would appear in Windows Explorer, sometimes a bunch open up (stacked). Then application icons open (not actual applications, but what I associate with blank applications. When I click on anything on the taskbar, they disappear. When I woke up this morning, there were so many my computer was getting slow, and I spent over $1,000 on this 11 months ago. They appear over time (i.e. one after another, not all at once), so they build up after a while. Occasionally one will stack as if a second instance of it is occurring. In the picture, the stack of application picture has them all flat. It does that to them after you hover over them (and switch between them) for a while.

Aug 18, 2014Using Livemail in Windows 8.1 for no apparent reason the content of all messages in one or more storage folders will disappear. The message header is OK, but the contents of all messages in that particular folder are identical. It seems to occur only when I drag a new message from the inbox or sent box into the storage folder. And not every time.
I have tried restores the message contents. Clearly the WLM storage file is messed up - is there any way to restore or recover it?
Tablets :: Cursor Disappear When Switch From One Windows Account To Another
Oct 7, 2013I've got a problem with my cursor disappearing when I switch from one Windows account to another. The older account got set up this past Christmas when I got the computer and the newer one got set up a couple of weeks ago. I had no problem with either account until today: now, suddenly, I'm finding that when I switch to the newer account, the cursor just flat-out disappears and doesn't come back for love or money. This leaves me unable to do very much of anything except switch back to the older account, where my cursor usually reappears. But as soon as I go back to the newer account, I've lost the cursor and can't make it come back.
For months now, I've been frustrated by the apparent oversensivity of the gesture interpretation on the touchpad. I innocently move a finger along the touchpad to get it from A to B and find that it gets interpreted as a wish to scroll or bring up a context menu or whatever. So yesterday, I disabled all but the single-finger gestures. The problem seems to have begun right after that. After various reboots and other experiments to get my cursor back on the newer account, I finally decided to re-enable the gestures as they had been on the theory that perhaps that was causing my cursor problems.
Any way to keep my cursor from disappearing in the second Windows account? And if you know how to keep the touchpad from reacting to every minute movement and interpreting it is an attempted-gesture when it is just me moving my hand.
The laptop is an ASUS K55N, which was new at 2012.
